Moraine Park offers free
entrepreneurship webinar
A
familiar proverb advises “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.”
While certainly relevant to many areas of life and business,
this lesson is especially critical for entrepreneurs embarking on
a new business venture or small business owners seeking to grow
and expand into new areas.
Moraine Park Technical College will be offering a free webinar,
“The Importance of a Business Plan–How to Get Started” on
Tuesday, January 10 from noon–1:00pm. This webinar will focus
on how important a business plan really is to the potential success
of an enterprise.
In addition to covering evidence in support of the case for creating a business plan, the webinar will cover key initial steps on
how to get started and various resources that can be used to begin
the business plan process. Available Moraine Park resources for
entrepreneurs and small business owners will be reviewed including free and low-cost workshops, courses, and events.
For more information, or to register for the webinar, call
920-924-3449 or email [email protected]. For more
information on Moraine Park’s business and industry education
and training options, visit morainepark.edu/training.
“Edith” (whose name has been changed to protect her privacy),
was an 88 year old woman who had recently moved to Washington
County. Her son called Interfaith Caregivers to find someone to
visit her because he was very concerned about what this move
would do to her. The Interfaith volunteer who quickly made
friends with “Edith” says she has benefited from the visits as much
as “Edith” has.
Interfaith volunteers can act as another set of eyes and ears to
help family watch for potentially dangerous situations. In previous years Interfaith volunteers have found seniors who had fallen
in their homes or shown signs of poor health and been able to get
them help.
Your support of the United Way of Washington County provides
funding to Caregivers Program offered by Interfaith Caregivers, a
program that makes a difference in the lives of senior citizens in
Washington County.
When you give at home by donating to United Way of Washington
County, 31 programs offered by 21 United Way partner agencies
are able to provide services to Washington County residents that
improve their lives. To find ways to give or how to help, visit its
website at www.unitedwayofwashingtoncounty.org.

On December 10, 2011, members of the City
and Town of Hartford Police Departments
and the Hartford Police Explorer Post volunteered their time for the annual “Shop with
a Cop” program at the Hartford Walmart.
Through generous donations from Walmart
and the Hartford Rotary Club, presents were
purchased for numerous families who might
not have had anything this year. Free lunches
were provided for all in attendance by the
Subway Restaurant at Walmart, and all of the
gifts were carefully wrapped by volunteers
from the Wellspring Community Church.
The department presented each of these organizations with plaques in appreciation for
their assistance on December 21st.
Hartford Police Department’s Shop with a
Cop program continues to be a very successful
program thanks to the coordination efforts of
Police School Liaison Eric Rasmussen and all
of our valuable Community Partners!

Chili Station—Be a true chili champ by setting up a crowd-pleasing
chili station with some of these winning ideas:
•Give guests the option to top brats or baked potatoes with chili.
•Serve it in large mugs so it’s easy to manage.
•Serve in mini bread bowls–just hollow out small, round sourdough loaves, toast
them in the oven for a few minutes to firm up the inside of the bowl.
•Set out a variety of toppings and sides guests can use to customize their chili:
sour cream, scallions, chopped red onions, tomatoes, sliced jalapeños, shredded
cheeses, cilantro, cornbread or corn muffins, crackers and tortilla chips.
MVP Chili
2 packages (19 ounces) Johnsonville Hot
Italian Sausage Links, casings removed
(use mild links for a less spicy chili)
1 large onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder (use mild chili
powder for less spicy chili)
¼ teaspoon cumin
1 bottle (12 ounces) dark beer (can substitute
with light beer or 1 cup beef stock)
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
salt and pepper
1 can (15.5 ounces) black beans
1 can (15.5 ounces) red kidney beans
1½ cups corn (frozen or fresh off the cob)
Decase sausage and sauté in a large pot; use a wooden spoon to crumble sausage as it cooks. Once
sausage is nicely browned, stir in onion, garlic, chili powder and cumin and continue cooking
until onion softens, about 5 minutes. Add beer and allow it to simmer for an additional 5 minutes, scraping up any brown bits from bottom of pan. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste and allow it
to simmer, uncovered for an additional 10 to 15 minutes on medium-low, stirring occasionally.
Taste and adjust seasonings with salt and pepper. Finally, stir in beans and corn. Let this come to
a simmer and it’s ready to serve. Can be prepared a day ahead. Makes: 12 cups, 6 to 8 servings
In large bowl, combine sausage and beef. Using your
hands, blend meats together and form into one large
ball. Use a spoon or a small measuring cup to gather
up about a 3-ounce ball and press into patties. In
large skillet over medium-high heat, pan fry 4 or 5
sliders at a time. Cook for about 3 minutes, then flip
and continue cooking for another 3 minutes. Test for
doneness. Internal temperature should be 160˚. Slice
buns and top sliders with your favorite condiments.
Makes: 16 sliders, 6 to 8 servings
