Lapponia, the Art of Expression
Founded in Finland in 1960, Lapponia Jewelry has always followed its bold intuition. Björn Weckström, who designed the
first collection, established a new sculpture-like jewelry,
drawing his inspiration from the shape and matte surface of
gold nuggets from Finnish Lapland. Lapponia’s trademark,
unique motifs and genuine design, was born. Today, Lapponia
employs an international team of jewelry designers.
The uniqueness of Lapponia jewellery lies in the combination
of artistic design, sculpture-like jewelry, choice of material,
skillful handicraft and small series.
Each piece of jewelry is a carefully considered whole, finished
right down to the most minute detail. Lapponia´s mission is
to revolutionise the conservative approach to jewelry design
through its unique art-jewelry inspired by Nordic nature.
All jewelry is manufactured in Finland and is sold in carefully
chosen high-class retail shops and department stores.

Lapponia wurde 1960 in Finnland gegründet. In der ersten Kollektion schuf der Designer Björn Weckström einen neuen bildhauerischen Schmuckstil. Inspiriert haben ihn die Form und die
matten Oberflächen von in Lappland gefundenen Goldnuggets.
Auf diese Weise ist Lapponias unverwechselbarer und individueller Stil entstanden. Heute ist ein internationales Team von
Schmuckdesignern für Lapponia tätig.
Lapponia Jewelry on aina kulkenut omaa, rohkeaa tietään.
Lapponia syntyi Suomessa vuonna 1960. Ensimmäisen kokoelman
suunnittelija Björn Weckström loi uuden, veistoksellisen korutyylin, johon inspiraation hän sai Lapin kultahippujen muodoista ja himmeästä pinnasta. Näin syntyi Lapponian omaleimainen ja
yksilöllinen muotoilu. Nykyisin Lapponian koruja suunnittelee
kansainvälinen taiteilijaryhmä.
Lapponia-korujen ainutlaatuisuus perustuu yksilölliseen muotoiluun, parhaisiin materiaaleihin, huolelliseen käsityöhön
sekä pieniin sarjoihin.
Jokainen koru on tarkoin harkittu kokonaisuus, joka on viimeistelty pienimpiä yksityiskohtiaan myöten. Lapponian sielu on
sen tunnistettavuudessa, jota on inspiroinut pohjoisen puhdas
luonto ja sen moninaiset muodot.
Kaikki korut valmistetaan Suomessa. Päämyyntikanavina toimivat valtuutetut kultasepänliikkeet sekä korkealuokkaiset
tavaratalot.

The asymmetrical patterning of the silver elements in Mari Isopahkala’s Suma collection evokes images of raft wood piled up at the brink of
rapids – to which the Finnish word ‘suma’ also refers.

The Art by Björn Weckström since 1963
2013 marks Björn Weckström’s 50th anniversary as a Lapponia artist.
Back in the 1960s, Björn Weckström’s sculptural forms and open-minded material combinations were already lending wings to Lapponia’s global success. To this day, Lapponia
remains the internationally best-known Finnish jewelry company – and Björn Weckström
its best-known artist.
In honor of this anniversary, Lapponia is issuing the BACK TO THE FUTURE collection,
which showcases eleven of the pieces that Björn Weckström has designed for Lapponia
over the decades. The collection is made of silver, which in some pieces has been
combined with acrylic. Thematically, all of the BACK TO THE FUTURE pieces are linked
to a wider Space Silver collection. They contain strong elements of science fiction and
fantasy, and many of their names are taken from these worlds.
BACK TO THE FUTURE jewelry will be on sale only during Weckström’s anniversary year
– 2013 – and only a limited number of acrylic pieces will be manufactured.
Das Jahr 2013 ist das 50ste Jubiläumsjahr von Professor Björn Weckström als LapponiaKünstler. Die von Björn Weckström geschaffene skulpturartige Formensprache und
seine ungewöhnlichen Materialkombinationen verhalfen Lapponia bereits in den
sechziger Jahren zu Weltruhm. Heute ist Lapponia nach wie vor ein international
bekanntes Schmuckunternehmen, dessen bekanntester Künstler Björn Weckström ist.
Zur Kollektion BACK TO THE FUTURE, die zu Ehren des Jubiläumsjahres herausgegeben wird, gehören 11 Schmuckstücke von Björn Weckström, die Lapponia in verschiedenen Jahrzehnten hergestellt hat. Alle Schmuckmodelle sind aus Silber, bei einigen
wird das Silber mit Acryl kombiniert. Thematisch sind alle BACK TO THE FUTURE Schmuckstücke ein Teil der größeren Kollektion Space Silver. Inspiriert wurden die
Schmuckstücke eindeutig von der Welt der Science Fiction und der Phantasy, aus der
auch die Namen vieler Schmuckstücke stammen.
Die Schmuckstücke BACK TO THE FUTURE werden nur während des Jubiläumsjahres
2013 verkauft. Die Anzahl der angefertigten Acrylschmuckstücke ist begrenzt.

Juhlavuoden kunniaksi julkistettava BACK TO THE FUTURE -kokoelma esittelee 11 Björn
Weckströmin suunnittelemaa korua, joita Lapponia on valmistanut eri vuosikymmeninä. Kaikki korumallit ovat hopeaa, ja osaan niistä on yhdistetty akryylia. Teemallisesti
kaikki BACK TO THE FUTURE -korut kytkeytyvät osaksi laajempaa Space Silver -kokoelmaa.
Koruissa on vahvasti läsnä science fiction ja fantasia, joiden maailmasta ovat peräisin

As winter approaches, the trees in the parks of Helsinki are covered with frost in the morning.
The frosty surface and outline makes even an ordinary leaf so charming. This is the magic of Finnish
winter which I love so much - it creates simple beauty in our daily life. In creating the Huurre necklace
Chao-Hsien Kuo co-worked with Anu Penttinen, another talented young female artist who crafted the
glass part of the pendant. Huurre in English: Frost.
Bei Einbruch des Winters sind die Bäume in den Parks in Helsinki morgens mit Reif bedeckt. Der
Reif auf der Oberfläche und seine Konturen verwandeln gewöhnliche Blätter in aufsehenerregende
Schönheiten. Gerade dies macht für mich den Zauber des von mir geliebten finnischen Winters aus –
die von ihm inmitten des Alltags geschaffene Schönheit. Bei der Kreation der Kette Huurre arbeitete
Chao-Hsien Kuo mit Anu Penttinen zusammen, einer anderen talentierten jungen Künstlerin, die den
Glashintergrund des Anhängers gefertigt hat. Huurre auf Deutch: Reif/ Frost.
Talven lähestyessä Helsingin puistojen puita peittää aamuisin huurre. Huurteinen pinta ja ääriviiva
tekee tuiki tavallisestakin lehdestä lumoavan. Juuri siinä on suuresti rakastamani Suomen talven taika
– sen arkielämän keskelle luoma yksinkertainen kauneus.

“My first work for Lapponia was a silver chess set in which each figure is a miniature sculpture. In some of
the figures I used forms and surfaces found in nature: the knight was formed from the scull of a bird, the
queen’s crown came from the teeth of a fox, the chain-mail on the pawn came from the back of a snake.
In competition playing, where winning is the only objective, standardised, neutral figures are used. I
strived for a set that also, in addition, offers a visual experience. With this set every game proceeds like
a ceremony in which each participant moves according to prescribed steps and then, one after another,
departs – leaving at the end the chess-board like a small empty piazza.”
SCHACHSPIEL
“Meine erste Arbeit für Lapponia war ein Schachspiel, in dem jede Figur eine Miniaturskulptur ist. Einige
Figuren habe ich von Formen und Flächen aus der Natur übernommen. Der Kopf des Springers ist die Kopie eines Vogelschädels, die Krone der Dame eine Kopie der Fuchszähne und der Harnisch des Bauers eine
Kopie des Rückens einer Otters.
In den Schachturnierspielen, in denen Sieg immer das einzige Ziel ist, werden ausdruckslose Standardfiguren gebraucht. Ich wollte, dass das Spiel neben die Gewinnsucht auch ein visuelles Erlebnis erbieten
würde. Der Verlauf des Spieles ist wie eine Zeremonie, da alle Teilnehmer sich mit genau spezifizierten
Schritten bewegen und dann einer nach dem anderen aussteigen - nur das Spielbrett hinterlassend, das wie
eine kleine, leere Piazza ist.”

You may recognize the human figure in Tree of Wisdom from Björn Weckström’s Space Silver jewelry collection.
This miniature sculpture, which shows a contemporary person standing under an ancient tree, is a perfect example
of the sculptor’s and jewelry artist’s skill at playing with scale. Björn Weckström, who is known for his sculpture-like
jewelry, has now created a jewel-like miniature sculpture.

Information about gemstones: Diamonds
Every diamond is unique. Diamond is remarkable natural product with superior hardness, lustre and scintillation in comparison to other gemstones. Diamond is the hardest known natural substance which makes it an
excellent symbol of eternal love.
The commercial value of diamonds is determined by quality. Lapponia Jewelry uses the grading system of the
Gemological Institute of America. The system has four quality factors: clarity, colour, cut and carat weight.
Diamonds form in the mantle of Earth under an intense temperature and pressure. The forming of a diamond is
something of a miracle in itself, and it is very exceptional that a discovered diamond has full clarity.
The clarity grade of diamonds used by Lapponia Jewelry is VS (very slightly included).
A diamond having no colour is more of a rarity factor than a quality factor. Totally colourless diamonds are
discovered only seldom. Most diamonds sold for jewellery purposes have a yellowish tint. The focus is more on
colourlessness than colour. Lapponia Jewelry uses diamonds of grade H (near colourless).
Lapponia Jewelry uses brilliant cut diamonds. Brilliant is the most common diamond cut. Of the four quality
factors mentioned above, the quality of the cut has the most extensive impact on the appearance of a diamond.
Well-proportioned dimensions, symmetry, polishing and light bring out the best in a diamond. Lapponia Jewelry
uses diamonds of excellent cut.
Diamond size is measured in carats (ct). Carat is a metric unit of measurement, and one carat is 0.2 grams. The
size range of diamonds used by Lapponia Jewelry is 0.01 – 0.10 ct.
Lapponia Jewelry purchases diamonds from reliable suppliers who have signed the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. The purpose of the Scheme is to ensure a sufficiently transparent supply chain from the diamond
mine to the end consumers and to make sure that an increasing part of the income benefits the well-being of

Der kommerzielle Wert eines Diamanten wird von seiner Qualität bestimmt. Lapponia Jewelry verwendet
den GIA- (Gemological Institute of America) Bewertungsstandard. Bei der Klassifizierung von GIA gibt es

Diamanten entstehen in der Erdkruste bei großer Hitze und unter großem Druck. Die Entstehung des
Diamanten selbst ist bereits ein kleines Wunder, und es ist äußerst selten, dass ein gefundener Diamant
vollkommen rein ist. Die von Lapponia Jewelry verwendete Reinheitsskala der Diamanten ist VS (sehr
kleine Einschlüsse).
Farblosigkeit ist beim Diamanten eher eine Seltenheit – ein Qualitätskriterium Vollständig farblose
Diamanten findet man nur sehr selten. Ein Großteil der für die Schmuckproduktion verwendeten
Diamanten ist vom Farbton her leicht gelblich. Statt der Farbe wird eher die Farblosigkeit klassifiziert.
Lapponia Jewelry verwendet Steine der Farbskala H (weiß, Wesselton).
Bei Lapponia Jewelry werden im Brillant-Schliff geschliffene Diamanten verwendet. Der Brillantschliff
ist der am häufigsten für Diamanten verwendete Schliff. Die Qualität des Schliffs wirkt sich von den
vier verwendeten Qualitätskriterien am meisten auf das Aussehen des Diamanten aus. Die richtigen
Proportionen, Symmetrie und Polierung bringen gemeinsam mit dem Licht die besten Eigenschaften
des Diamanten zum Vorschein. Lapponia Jewelry verwendet nur Diamanten mit exzellenten (excellent)
Schliff.
Die Größe des Diamanten wird in Karat (ct) ausgedrückt. Karat ist eine metrische Maßeinheit, und ein
Karat entspricht 0,2 g. Die von Lapponia Jewelry verwendeten Diamanten haben ein Gewicht von 0,01 – 0,10
ct.
Lapponia Jewelry kauft ihre Diamanten von vertrauenswürdigen Lieferanten, die sich dem KimberleyAbkommen verpflichtet haben. Der Zweck des Kimberley-Abkommens ist eine ausreichend transparente
Lieferkette von der Diamantenmine bis zum Endverbraucher. Das Abkommen soll gewährleisten, dass ein
größerer Anteil der Erträge den gesetzlichen Regierungen der Erzeugerländer und dem Wohlergehen
der lokalen Bevölkerung zugutekommt.

Jalometallituotteessa oleva suomalainen tarkastusleima takaa
tuotteen oikean pitoisuuden. Siitä tietää myös, että valmistaja
on rekisteröity Turvatekniikan keskuksessa ja siten kaikki
lakisääteiset asiat on hoidettu asianmukaisesti.
Suomalaisessa tarkastusleimassa on kruunun kuva sydämen
muotoisella pohjalla, jossa näkyy aaltomaisia kuvioita.

Tietoa jalokivistä: Timantit
Jokainen timantti on yksilö. Timantti on ainutlaatuinen luonnontuote, jolla on ylivoimainen kovuus, kiilto ja
loisto muihin jalo- ja korukiviin verrattuna. Timantti on kovinta luonnosta löydettyä ainetta ja siten erinomainen ikuisen rakkauden symboli.
Timantin kaupallinen arvo määräytyy laadun perusteella. Lapponia Jewelry käyttää GIA:n (Gemological Institute
of America) luokitusjärjestelmää. GIA:n luokituksessa on neljä laatutekijää: puhtaus, väri, hionta ja paino.
Timantti syntyy maankuoren sisällä kovassa kuumuudessa ja paineessa. Timantin muodostuminen itsessään on
pieni ihme ja on erittäin poikkeuksellista, että löydetty timantti on täysin puhdas. Lapponia Jewelryn käyttämien
timanttien puhtausluokka on VS (vähäisiä sulkeumia).
Timantin värittömyys on enemmän harvinaisuus- kuin laatutekijä. Täysin värittömiä timantteja löytyy hyvin
harvoin. Valtaosa korukäyttöön myytävistä timanteista on sävyltään kellertäviä. Värin sijasta luokitellaan
enemmänkin värittömyyttä. Lapponia Jewelry käyttää laatuluokan H (lähes väritön) kiviä.
Lapponiassa käytetään briljantti- hiontaisia timantteja. Briljantti on yleisimmin käytetty timantin hiontamuoto. Hionnan laatu vaikuttaa timantin ulkonäköön neljästä käytetystä laatutekijästä kaikkein eniten. Oikeat
mitta-suhteet, symmetria ja kiillotus tuovat yhdessä valon kanssa timantin parhaat ominaisuudet esiin. Lapponia
Jewelry käyttää hionnaltaan erinomaisia (excellent) timantteja.
Timantin koko ilmaistaan karaatteina (ct). Karaatti on metrinen mittayksikkö ja yksi karaatti on 0,2 g. Lapponia
Jewelryn käyttämät timantit ovat kooltaan 0.01 – 0.10 ct.
Lapponia Jewelry ostaa timantit luotettavilta toimittajilta, jotka ovat sitoutuneet Kimberleyn sopimukseen.
Kimberleyn sopimuksen tarkoituksena on taata riittävän läpinäkyvä toimitusketju timanttikaivokselta loppukuluttajalle ja lisäksi taata, että entistä suurempi osa tuloista hyödyttää tuottajamaiden laillisten hallitusten
ja paikallisten ihmisten hyvinvointia.
