Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding Boots On! TEN YEARS OF HEALING AND HOPE Community Benefit Report 2003-2013 Reflections from Cathy Dear Friends, It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding started as business documents filed with the State of Maryland. We are now a dynamic, successful Community Benefit Organization! What started as an idea to connect people with horses—that is people who would never get to be around horses if it weren’t for CTR—has served more than 1,000 people in programming, community service and employment. Our staff, volunteers and families have witnessed children saying their first words and taking their first steps after participating in therapeutic riding and hippotherapy. Our families place their trust in our staff and volunteers knowing we will provide the most fun and the safest experience possible when connecting to our wonderful herd of healing horses. We are grateful for the generous support we’ve received over these 10 years. Without the support of our community, we would still be just an idea instead of an exciting reality. Your continued support is essential to meeting our capital campaign commitment and creating our permanent home at Oakington in Havre de Grace. Our new home at will provide opportunity to better serve populations, such as veterans, disadvantaged youth and the elderly. We will be able to expand and enhance daytime programming for school aged children and companies seeking professional development options. The first 10 years have been extraordinary. Please consider joining us on the journey through the next decade and beyond! Cathleen Schmidt Founder & Executive Director PATH International Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructor EAGALA Certified Equine Specialist Gratefully, Greetings from our Board Dear Friends, Families and Community Supporters, As I reflect on my affiliation with CTR, I am most awestruck by our tenacity, growth and impact on the lives of our clients. I am fortunate enough to have been with CTR since its beginnings. I came to know Cathy Schmidt, Executive Director, out of a common love for horses. From our first meeting I was drawn to her vision, passion and commitment to enable others to experience that horse-human connection. Since that time, I have seen CTR flourish and that same passion and commitment has been passed on to all who CTR touches. Having the chance to provide opportunities for our clients to experience freedom, independence, increased selfesteem, physical movement/improvement, recreation and fun has truly been life changing, and it is what drives us to do the work we do. As we move forward, I am most excited about our new home and the public/ private partnership we have developed with Harford County to build a state-of-theart therapeutic riding center in Havre de Grace. This facility will enable us to further grow our program, expand services and better meet the needs of an ever-increasing number of individuals, groups and organizations right here in our community. Everyone deserves the chance for the best quality of life possible, and we will work tirelessly toward that end. CTR has accomplished so much in the past 10 years. I am most appreciative of the trust our clients have placed in us and to our CTR team and our donors and supporters for their unwavering commitment and vision. Our first 10 years has provided an excellent foundation for more great things to come. Thank you for joining us! Gratefully, Na n cy Sp en c e Board President Vision To establish Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding as the premier equine-based, therapeutic healing and recreation center in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Our Certifications Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding is a Member Center of PATH International (the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) and a Model Program through EAGALA (the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association). Board Volunteers 2006-2014 Thank you to everyone who has served on our Board of Directors! We appreciate your leadership, talents, and time spent advancing CTR’s mission. It’s that basic. And it’s definitely not that simple. Though the paperwork was in process with the State of Maryland and the IRS in 2005, CTR still didn’t have a home. We only existed on paper. It was by chance and good fortune that I chose to move my horse, (and CTR’s first therapy horse) Socks to a beautiful boarding stable in Bel Air, where I knew she would be well cared for and safe. It was in September that the owners of the farm allowed CTR to get started after hearing about my goal. We knew we had to grow beyond four horses (three of which were borrowed) and six riders for three hours on Saturday mornings. We were still waiting for the IRS to grant our letter of determination and began searching to rent a horse farm with indoor arena: a search that would take a year and a half. In April 2007, approximately a year and a half after we taught our first therapeutic riding lessons and prior to moving to Tuckaway Farm, we approached Parks and Recreation to discuss renting county land for our operations. The problem was that there were no turn-key horse facilities available and we would have to raise all of the approximately $1 million in capital funds to improve property we wouldn’t own. Not a very attractive idea for potential funders. Our board of directors declined the offer. Starting in September 2008, CTR began five memorable years at Tuckaway Farm in Havre de Grace, growing our program to include hippotherapy (physical therapy on horseback) and equine assisted learning and psychotherapy. We also created Equine Experiences so that larger groups could learn about horses and their care. In addition, we started taking our pony, Sally, on the road as “The Pony Express”! In 2010, the current Director of Parks and Recreation and the County Executive created an opportunity for CTR that was equitable and sustainable, so our plans for an eventual permanent home began to move forward. Then during the summer of 2013, a local businessman and philanthropist offered CTR a generous opportunity to move our operations to his private farm (rent-free!) in order that we could continue doing our important work and focus on our capital campaign towards building at Oakington. We are most grateful for our present location, even as we look forward to our new home in Havre de Grace. . CAPTAIN ................. . CRYSTAL ................. . SALLY ................. . Whether a person sits astride a horse or works with these wonderful creatures on the ground, there is always opportunity for growth and learning. We serve our community in a number of specialized ways: Therapeutic Riding – Mounted activities focuses the physical and cognitive abilities of people with special needs in learning to ride Hippotherapy – Physical therapy on horseback that uses the movement of the horse to achieve functional outcomes in the client Equine Assisted Learning and Psychotherapy – Experiential encounters focused on self exploration and self awareness, through the close connection with horses in ground based sessions Equine Experiences – “Horse” keeping opportunities for groups to learn about horse care in fun, team-oriented activities involving the horses Pony Express – Off-site visits with Sally designed for people who may not be able to visit the farm in order to receive benefit from the connection with horses Through these various paths of healing, in 2013 CTR provided over 700 hours of programming and impacted 290 people with the healing power of horses. This was made possible by five paid staff members and the dedication of 80 volunteers. Our volunteers contributed 5,237 hours last year, and they continually recruit others to assist us in our mission-driven work. “ I am grateful for CTR because each day of volunteering gives me inspiration, reminds me of what is truly important, and gives me a sense of service. Our Work Our g n i l a e H Herd “ All of us at CTR are so thankful for the volunteers who assist us in our work, as well as our clients, families, and community partners. This exciting project is anticipated to be complete by late 2015 and will allow CTR to expand therapeutic programming for individuals, school groups, and other Marylandbased nonprofit organizations. Once at Oakington, we can also implement new plans for serving veterans and the elderly. Not only would these activities fulfill our mission, but they would also assist us in preserving our long-term financial sustainability.
