WHERE THE ARTS BLOOM
AND THE YOUTH CELEBRATES

Message from Minister for Education
Welcome to the 48th year of our Singapore Youth Festival! Through the years, the Festival has remained true to our goal
to nurture well-rounded students with strong character, a love for the arts, and a heart for our community.
Our schools work hard to bring out the best in every child, whatever the child’s starting point in life, by coaching our
children to reach their fullest potential in their areas of strength or talent. It is a real joy for me and my colleagues when
the human spirit is unleashed in our young people, and they learn to discover and appreciate the truth, beauty and
goodness around us. The arts are a great way for our young people to explore their interests and talents, and express
themselves. But of course, it is that moment when our youths perform for those they love and respect that they really
appreciate the power of the arts for connecting us across boundaries, and creating a shared identity and community.
This is why we changed the way we run the Festival. This year, many more schools and students will have the chance to
perform for the public. We want every child to have the chance to shine.
Students and their teachers have been working very hard and are excited to show you what they have been working on.
I hope you will enjoy their performances, and cheer them on as they continue on their journey of imagination and
creative expression.
I wish all an enjoyable and exciting Festival!
Message from Director-General of Education
The annual Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) imbues in our youth a sense of pride and fulfilment through their participation
in the Arts co-curricular activities. Each year, our students practise and hone their skills in preparation for the SYF Arts
Presentations in April. This year, over 800 performances were presented and close to 600 artworks submitted for selection.
This is a testament to the vibrant and diverse arts talents in our schools.
Beyond the pursuit for artistic excellence, our students learn important life skills when they work together in teams, persevere
through the challenges and gain confidence as they perform or exhibit their artworks in public. The SYF Celebrations in
July this year has provided more opportunities for them to showcase and engage the audience through their creations at
Gardens by the Bay, ICA Galleries at LASALLE College of the Arts, and satellite events at four libraries in different areas of
Singapore. These public settings for performances and exhibitions bring the arts closer to the community and also serve
as authentic learning opportunities for the students.
Last year, the success of the Open Call enabled students to submit their works for selection and a wider range of performing
art forms was presented. This year, the number of submissions has increased and we can look forward to more novel and
creative performances. I am also heartened to note that there will be a segment of the programme that will showcase
schools’ alumni who have previously participated in the SYF. This will encourage students to keep up their passion and arts
practice even after they have left the schools.
I hope the audience will enjoy the interaction with the participants and encourage our young performers when doing so.
I wish all a rewarding and enchanting time at the Festival.

Introduction to Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay is made up of three waterfront gardens - Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central. Bay South Garden,
at 54 hectares, is home to two Cooled Conservatories (Flower Dome and Cloud Forest), the outdoor Themed Gardens
(Heritage Gardens and World of Plants) and the uniquely-designed vertical gardens known as Supertrees.

Fun Facts about the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest
Did You Know?
The glass façade of the Flower Dome is made up of 3,332 glass panels of varying shapes and sizes which fit together
like a gigantic puzzle!
Did You Know?
The Cloud Forest is 0.8 hectares (the size of 1.5 football fields) and houses the world’s tallest indoor
man-made waterfall!
Activity: Count the number of pillars in each of the Conservatories. How many are there?

Cloud Forest
Begin your Cloud Forest Trail here!
Enter into a mysterious world of tropical plants, where you will experience what tropical highlands offer.
The Cloud Forest is a cool-moist conservatory which replicates a tropical highland environment that is between 1,500
and 3,500 metres above sea level.
Did You Know?
Cloud Forests make up 2.5% of the world’s tropical forests.
48
A Trail @ Gardens by the Bay
A Trail @ Gardens by the Bay
1. Location: The Falls
3. Location: Lost World
Do you see a waterfall in front of you? This is the world’s tallest indoor man-made
waterfall, at 34 metres. In Cloud Forests around the world, waterfalls help to keep the
humidity level high and maintain moisture in the air, to allow plants in such environments
to survive.
Take the lift up to Level 6 and follow the directions to the Lost World.
49
You have now reached the highest point of the Cloud Forest at 42 metres and the second highest point at Bay South
Garden. Observe the plants around you and you will find a very interesting group of plants known as “carnivorous
plants”, that live here.
Carnivorous plants grow in soil that is very poor in nutrients. To survive, they obtain nitrogen and other minerals by
capturing and digesting micro-organisms, insects and even small vertebrates.
In this conservatory, you might also experience the ‘cloud effect’, when the mist is
released throughout the dome, to replicate what a real Cloud Forest is like.
Activity: Try to locate at least 3 of these plants.
2. Location: Mountain wall after The Falls
Take a closer look at the variety of plants that clad the mountain side. Many of these are epiphytes which grow on
other plants or organic surfaces but do not cause harm to the plants that play host to them. They draw on moisture and
nutrients from the air around them, in order to survive.
(1) Pitcher plant:
They have beautiful cup-like traps with brightly-coloured rims and partially-opened lids,
which are modified leaves that entice curious insects to visit.
(2) Venus Flytrap:
The closing of the “trap” is triggered by tiny hairs that are found on
the inner surface of the leaf blade.
Did You Know?
The “mountain” is a building within a building! It had to built before the façade of the
conservatory was built.
(3) Sundew:
It releases a visible, sticky substance that makes it look like it is covered
in morning dew, which lures insects that are in search of water, to it.
Activity: Some of these plants can be found on the mountain side. Pick a tick in the box if you are able to spot them!
(4) Butterwort:
The leaves of this carnivorous plant are covered with a greasy liquid
that resembles the feel of butter, hence the name “Butterwort”.
4. Location: Cloud Walk
Make your way onto the Cloud Walk to enjoy a panoramic view of Bay South Garden as you look out across to the
Supertrees and outdoor Themed Gardens.
Bromeliads
Begonias
Orchids
Rhododendrons
Did You Know?
The Cloud Walk is between 25 and 31 metres above the ground and covers a
winding distance of 122 metres from start to finish!
Activity:
Take a photograph with your friends anywhere along the Cloud Walk and share it with us! #gardensbythebay

A Trail @ Gardens by the Bay
FUN FACT: Antonio Vivaldi & The Four Seasons
5. Location: Earth Check / +5 Degrees / Gardens by the Bay Model
Hello everyone! My name is Antonio Lucio Vivaldi.
I was born in 1678 in Venice, Italy. Like my father, I was musical
and played the violin. I inherited his red hair. I have eight
younger siblings, and as the eldest son in the family, I was
destined for priesthood. I became a full-fledged priest
in 1703.
Follow the directions to Earth Check and +5 Degrees. At these spaces, you will find interpretive displays that tell you
about the state of the Earth today, as a result of human activities.
You would also get a glimpse of what the Earth would be like as temperature increases point by point.
Watch the +5 Degrees video presentation.
In this same year, I was hired by Ospedale della Pietà,
which was a famous girls’ orphanage in Venice. I was a
teacher and composer at the orphanage for 37 years.
The orphanage had a large collection of instruments. The
girls were well-trained by my colleagues and they
became talented musicians.
Activity: What are your thoughts after watching the video? Write a commitment to save the Earth
and share it with your friends when you are back in school.
I wrote vocal as well as instrumental music that were
religious and non-religious in nature. The largest output of
music I have written was more than 500 concertos for a large
variety of solo instrumentation. Of which, The Four Seasons,
which belong to a set of twelve concertos entitled Il cimento
dell’armonia e dell’inventione (The Test of Harmony and
Invention), was especially popular.
Now, make your way to the Gardens by the Bay Model and learn about the environmentally
sustainable strategies that are in place.
Did You Know?
11 of the Supertrees are embedded with environmentally sustainable functions. Some have photovoltaic cells that help
to harness solar energy to light up the Supertrees at night, while others are integrated with the Conservatories and
serve as air exhaust receptacles.
6. Let's Get Cracking!
The official logo of Gardens by the Bay is a red dragonfly
known as the Common Parasol (Neurothemis fluctuans).
Dragonflies are an integral part of the ecosystem and
thrive where there is clean water. They are thus a fitting
representative for sustainability, one of the key themes of
the Gardens.
51
I hope you will enjoy my music, and can discover the sounds of nature in the four concertos:
SPRING (CONCERTO NO. 1): Birds chirping; babbling brooks; gentle breezes; a barking dog;
and a peasant dance accompanied by bagpipes.
SUMMER (CONCERTO NO. 2): A blazing sun; an approaching story; a thunderous storm, lightning.
AUTUMN (CONCERTO NO. 3): Celebratory singing and dancing; cool breezes; a hunting scene.
WINTER (CONCERTO NO. 4): The howling of the winter winds.
I am especially surprised to learn of new arrangements of my works!

FUN FACT: Marching Bands
53
Busking is also known as street performing, where people entertain in public places for donations. The word,
“busk”, means “to seek or to wander”. In the past, buskers referred to people who wandered to seek a fortune.
It was also regarded as a source of employment for entertainers before the invention of recording technology.
Buskers were also known as troubadours (French), Minnesigners (German), or Buscarsi (Italian).
Marching bands evolved out of m _ _ _ _ _ _ _ bands, and assumed ceremonial roles.
The attire of marching bands resembles military uniform.
Busking activities include:
The instrumentation of marching bands varies, but usually includes the _ r _ _ _,
woodwind and percussion sections.
A drum _ _ j _ _ is the leader of a marching band. He commands the band
with a m _ _ _.

The American composer, band leader, and conductor, John Philip S _ _ _ _ (1854 – 1932)
headed the U.S. Marine Band and was fondly remembered for the military marches
he had composed.
The colour g _ _ _ _ _, who spin coloured flags, rifles and other props, and dance at

FUN FACT: Dancing barefoot
FUN FACT: DRAMA
55
Performing classical Indian dance, Bharatanatyam, with bare feet
shows the dancers’ respect and love for Mother Earth. Dancing bare
feet also allows dancers to connect with the earth and apply the
right amount of pressure to the ground.
The intricate stamping footwork also produces stamping sounds
that enhance the expressive and aesthetic quality of the
Indian dance performance.
Curious about Bharatanatyam?
Go to
to watch a video or
to learn more about it!
Many dance educators also encourage children to dance barefoot1
because it is easier for them to feel the floor during movement
exploration activities. It is also easier for them to jump, point and
flex their feet.
Research by podiatrists also reveal that children moving around
barefooted develop the muscles and ligaments of the foot, increase
the strength of the foot’s arch, contributes to good postures and
improves proprioception - the ability to sense stimuli arising within
the body regarding position, motion, and equilibrium.
Do you know?
Masks are used in various forms of theatre and performances all over the world. They are used
to represent different characters and emotions that the actors want to portray. This is important
in some forms of theatre, such as the traditional Japanese musical drama Noh, as women were
not allowed to perform in them. Masks are also used to differentiate not just gender, but also
between gods and mortals, good and evil characters.
Masks also have a more practical function. In Ancient Greek theatre, some masks incorporated
a built in megaphone, which allowed the actors’ voices to be projected in large open-air
amphitheatres.
Masks did not necessarily cover just the face. The Yup’ik people, Eskimos from Western and
Southwestern Alaska, created “maskettes” that were worn on the fingers, which they used in
traditional story telling.

SYF 2014 Art Exhibition
The Singapore Youth Festival Art Exhibition is an annual national school event that recognises and celebrates
the talents of our students in the visual arts. This year, the exhibition features 148 artworks by students in the
secondary and higher levels and is held at five venues across Singapore. Based on the theme, ‘artIst’, the
students’ artworks provide an insight into their journey toward creative expression, manifesting their artistic
visions in ways that are personal and distinct. The artworks also capture the myriad of ways students perceive
the world around them and represent their place in it. It celebrates the artist in every student and provides a
snapshot of their experience of art in schools.

68
FOLD an origami!
Follow these instructions!
1. Start with your paper
white side up. Fold in half,
open, then fold in half the
other way.
2. Now fold the paper in half
diagonally, both ways.
5. Your creases should look
like this. It looks complicated,
but don’t worry!
6. Fold the outside edges
into the centre line.
3. Fold all four corners into
the centre and crease well.
4. Turn over and fold all four
corners into the
centre again.
7. Holding each inside edge from the point at the centre,
