Awards
Certificates, Marks, Medallions and Scholarships
Certificates- Gold, Silver, Bronze
There is no prearranged number of Gold, Silver, or Bronze certificates allotted for each class. By way of example: in a class of
ten students, five may receive Gold Certificates and the remainder may receive Silver and/or Bronze. The student with the
highest Gold wins the class and will receive a medallion in recognition of their achievement. In the event there is no Gold
certificate awarded in the class, there will be no winner.
Gold, Silver, or Bronze certificates are issued as follows:
Gold 88 and Above
Silver 84-87
Bronze 80-83
The Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates are not indicative of 1st, 2nd or 3rd place standing in a class, they represent a personal
performance achievement.
Marks
Each student will be given a mark for their performance indicated on the comment sheet. Marks will not be announced at the
conclusion of the class but will be kept by the adjudicator on a tabulation sheet which in turn will be submitted to the BCCM
Music Festival Office.
Medallions
The student with the highest Gold wins the class and the winner will receive a medallion in recognition of their achievement. In
the event there is no gold certificate awarded, there will be no winner.
Medallions are awarded at the Honour’s Recital held in June. Only one medallion per student will be awarded even though they
are the winner in more than one class. For students who have won more than one class, acknowledgement of this achievement
will be indicated on the medallion.
Class Winners - Posted Online
Class winners will be posted online within 24 hours. Saturday class winners will be posted on Monday.
Scholarships
In order to qualify for a scholarship a student must enter a minimum of THREE solo classes or ONE concert group class and
ONE solo class, as stated in the 2016 festival syllabus.
The mark used to determine a scholarship is found by averaging the two highest marks a student has obtained in all classes
entered. By way of example: if a student receives marks of 89, 87, 92 and 87 in various classes, the 89 and 92 will be averaged
resulting in 90.5 for an overall mark. This mark will be used to determine if the student has achieved the highest average mark
in the category they have entered. In the event of a tie, scholarships are awarded to both, or all students.
Fairness and Value
Occasionally one or more class categories may receive a low number of entries while other classes are overflowing. To provide
a level playing field and maintain fairness to all students, to endow with value the medallion awarded to the winner of a given
class and, in the spirit of sociable competition, BCCM Music Festival reserves the right to combine one or more classes.
Awards Cont’d
Adjudicator Comments, Trophies and Class re-assignment
Adjudicator Comments
Each candidate will receive a written critique of their performance and verbal comments will take place at the conclusion of
each class.
Personal Trophy
Scholarship recipients will be awarded a personal “keeper” trophy for display in their homes.
Perpetual Trophy
The name of the scholarship winners for each available category will be placed on a perpetual trophy which will remain on
display at the Conservatory.
Class Re-assignment
If a student who, at his or her initiative, requests reassignment to another class from the originally assigned class as posted in
the program, for any reason, and provided the change can be accommodated, will not be eligible to win the class to which they
were reassigned; nor will the marks received in the newly assigned class be valid for the class from which they were reassigned.
In essence they forfeit the ability to win any class with the reassigned piece. Further, the mark received in the newly assigned
class may not be included in the total used to determine the highest average for a scholarship. However, the piece in question
will be included in the total number of entries required to be eligible for a scholarship.
The student will receive a full critique of their performance and receive a certificate like all participants in the class but again,
will not be eligible to win the class.
Class reassignment is solely at the discretion of the BCCM Festival administration. If the student does not wish to play in their
originally assigned class or the new class to which they have been reassigned, the performance will be forfeited. In either case
there will be no refund of fees.

Victoria Day
BCCM is open for regular lessons.
Victoria Day is a federal Canadian public holiday celebrated on the last
Monday before May 25, in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday.
The date is also, simultaneously, that on which the current reigning
Canadian sovereign's official birthday is recognized.
Who is Queen Victoria?
Who is the current Canadian Sovereign?
"A great way to celebrate Victoria Day is to get up early and practice for an
additional 30 minutes on top of your regular practice time".
