We interviewed Diane Otsuka, one of the co-owners of Flourish Bakery
Flourish Bakery is a
yummy, savory treat for
people in Scarsdale. We
interviewed Diane Otsuka,
one of the co-owners of the
shop.
O. Otsuka: How is running a bakery
different then running a restaurant?
D. Otsuka: You get ready for dinner
at a restaurant, different things are
served, no waiters or waitresses.
A. Daire: Why did you choose to
run a bakery, not a restaurant?
D. Otsuka: Restaurants are opened
all night, I wanted to be home at
night, I worked about 12 hours a
day (10:00 am to 11:00 pm).
J. F. Robelen: Where did you get the
name of the bakery?
D. Otsuka: We wanted to find a
word that sounded like the word
flour.
O. Otsuka: How long have you been
running this bakery?
D. Otsuka: We have run the bakery
for over 3 years.
A. Daire: What are the pros and
cons (ups and downs) of running a
bakery?
D. Otsuka: The ups are flexibility,
you can come in with new ideas,
and there is a farmers market 3
times a week. The downs are, we
are not on a busy street, and we run
out of storage space.
J. F. Robelen: Why did you close
down the restaurant?
D. Otsuka: The lease ran out.

In May at Fox Meadow the 1st graders get chick and duck eggs. everyone is
exited to see them hatch.
The chicks and ducks are not pets. Even though we heard the first grade is
having chicks and ducks it is actually for a big-unit on life cycles. They are just
keeping them for a couple weeks. The first graders still treat them like pets by
feeding them grain and bringing them home on the weekends.

Before they hatch the classes keep them in a 99-degree incubator. The
incubator keeps the eggs warm before they hatch. The chicks and ducks get out of their
eggs by using their egg tooth.

Right now there is a webcam that shows them hatching. Parents and students
are watching every day

Fox Meadow Fair Before the Fair

Have you ever wondered what goes on before the Fox Meadow
fair? If so, read on!
Before It All Begins
It all starts at 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012 when the
custodians start setting up. It takes about four people to actually set
up the fair.
It’s difficult to set up your first year but if you stick to it like
custodian Mr. Gianelli did for 18 years and counting “then you can do it
in your sleep.”
The custodians aren’t the only ones who help out with the fair;
Mr. Wilson and the parents help out too!
A Principal’s Point of View
Mr. Wilson does more than you think to help out. He helps out
coach S.W. at the pep-rally. At the fair Mr. Wilson gets dunked.
Mr. Wilson loves the fair but makes sure you don’t steal his
burger. His favorite game is the
dunk tank
because it makes people laugh.
Parent Power!
The parents do so much
that it is difficult to list all of
the amazing things they help out
with. Some of the parents help
cook the
manage the
games. The

food. Others
rides and
fair would not
without them!
And Finally… the Good Stuff
The prizes, the rides, and the games, everyone
loves the good stuff. Most of the prizes are
donated but some are bought. Most of the games
and rides are returning like the rock wall, dunk tank, and jumping
castles.
Now you know all about what goes on before the fair. Have fun at
the fair!
Cabaret by Yuri
On May 8th at 7pm, cabaret took place. 5th graders got to perform on the stage
in the gym. 5th grade students danced, sang, and did comedy routines. Cabaret
is one of the fun activities they do in 5th grade. Here are some of the other
activities in 5th grade: American Games, Ellis Island, Pool Party, party at the
teen center and more.
Students enjoy cabaret because they get to be creative. They could perform
things they like to do, they could do things that they are good at, or students can
do something that they do out of school. Before cabaret you can usually see kids
practicing in the hall and in classrooms. Try to get to cabaret next year.
Scarsdale High School Fair

Where do you get cotton candy, play games, win prizes and go on exciting and thrilling rides?
That’s right, at the high school fair. There you can try out the rides like the Tornado or the
Slippery Slide. Then you can throw some darts at balloons and if you do well, you can go home
with a stuffed pet of your own.
The carnival is over now. It was on April 20 from 6pm to 10pm and also on April 21 from 1pm to
8pm at 1057 White Plains Road (The High School). You did not want to miss that opportunity
because the fair only comes once in a year. Students from Fox Meadow tell us what their favorite
rides are and why they look forward to the fair every single year.
Jeffrey Morse is a third grader in Fox Meadow Elementary School. He came to the SHS fair with
his father and best friend. His favorite ride was the ROUND UP because he likes the fact that he
is lying down and also flying at the same time. Jeffrey’s favorite game was the game where you
shoot cups and his least favorite game was Let’s go Fishing. He did not win anything but he will
go back next year. Jeffrey probably will help out at the fair when he is in High school. He spent
about thirty dollars there, and he was sad when he had to leave.
Abigail Stein, a 3rd grade of Fox Meadow
Elementary School went to the high
school fair with her friend. She won no
prizes but she loves the game where you
shoot water in a certain place and she
doesn’t hate any other games. Her favorite
ride was The Drop because it goes fast.
Her least favorite game was Magic Carpet
because it didn’t go fast. I guess she likes
fast rides! She is not going to help out in
the fair when she is in High school. She
feels so excited when she gets there and
she doesn’t want to leave when she has to
go. She said that she spent at least $10 and
she is definitely going back next year.
If you do go to the fair next year then you might want to take these recommendations into
consideration. If you think that the fair has rides only for older kids then you are wrong: the
High School fair also has merry-go-rounds and other rides for smaller children. The dragon roller
coaster is perfect for smaller children and so is the Dizzy Dragon. The Super Slide, the very tall
and long pink slide is also a favorite. The Ferris wheel is also very popular. Many people will
ride the Ferris wheel because it is very slow and easygoing.
This year, there were some new games to play. There was a game where you had to shoot a dart
at a star and if you got the dart on target, you would get a great prize. The rides are fun to go on
even though they stay mostly the same. So remember, if you happen to be around the Scarsdale
Library or White Plains Road on April 20th or 21st next year, stop by the High School Fair and
don’t miss the once a year event.
State Test By Jack, Janet and Jeffrey
Have you heard about the state test? Are you frightened that you had to take the state test? Do you think you will get good results? Do you think it will be hard? We are addressing this topic.
The state test is a test administered by the state. The test tests you on how much you learned and how well your teacher taught you. The test can be really hard sometimes, so you have to remember to practice. Luckily, your teacher has probably ran some practice tests.
The state test should not be frightening. It is to judge teachers on how much (well) they teach you. Teachers think that the hardest booklet is book 3 language. The teachers think their students will succeed and ‘’hard working.’’Sometimes it’s not fair because maybe your teacher is great but you don’t pay attention.
The state test can be easy, hard, boring, and even fun!
