PRESIDENT'S LETTER
I have to adm it, all of us look for w ar d to the w ar m w eather of
sum m er. It's w ell know n in the r escue com m unity that sum m er
br ings m any litter s of kittens and that is ver y tr ue for Cat Tales. We
indeed have m any kittens, but the good thing is that w e ar e seeing a
slight decr ease in the num ber of adult cats in our colonies due to the
har d w or k of our TNR (tr ap, neuter , r etur n) cr ew. In our com m unity,
w e have been able to close dow n one of the colonies that w as ver y
unsafe and difficult for our volunteer s to pr ovide car e to. Fr om that
colony w e r escued a fr iendly cat and another cat w ho, accor ding to
the veter inar ian, w as m ost likely bor n w ithout any teeth ? now both
of those kitties can look for w ar d to a m uch br ighter futur e and ar e
cur r ently up for adoption.
We have been busy helping Anim al Contr ol as m uch as possible w ith
the cats that they have r escued and w e have done our best ?cat
juggling? in the shelter to be able to accom m odate their kitties in
need. Our volunteer s and helper s have also been w or king on som e
long-ter m pr ojects: for exam ple, w e ar e now ver y close to
com pleting our Cattyshack building num ber 3!
The bar n conver sion for TNR is near ly com plete and although w e
still need to install heat and air conditioning in the building, the
insulation and finished w alls have allow ed us to accom m odate TNR
cats befor e and after sur ger y.
We have also star ted the r enovation of the old office to cr eate a new
?Adoption and Isolation? r oom and w e ar e ver y excited to continue
and hopefully com plete this pr oject befor e the fall of this year. Our
goal is to cr eate a w ar m and com for table space w her e individuals
and fam ilies can spend tim e getting to know their potential new
feline fam ily m em ber. Fur ther , w e have been doing som e
r em odeling upgr ades in other r oom s too, such as cr eating bigger
living spaces by r em oving a w all, and fr eshening up som e of our
existing w alk-in cages.

Futur e pr ojects, pending the necessar y volunteer pow er , include

So all of us at Cat Tales w ant to thank you for your continued suppor t as w e evolve into the best ver sion of

Li z, a volunteer for about 9 m onths said: ?I rescued
Jackson in 2014 from Cat Tales and he has just changed
my life. I really love animals and giving back to the
community so I decided to join the crew and volunteer,
so that other families can have the same experience as I
did adopting a new pet. W hat keeps me coming back is
the rewarding feeling that I am a part in helping to
change the lives of so many cats. Plus I get to spend my
Sunday mornings playing with them.?
Dar l en e says: ?I've been volunteering since M arch of
2013. I first contacted Cat Tales because they were close
to where I lived! I have various roles within Cat Tales.
Some roles I'm with the cats and other tasks I do help
on their behalf. I keep coming back because it is one of
the few opportunities where you can help those in need
who "do not have a voice." We have the responsibility of
being their voice. W hen I communicate with others who
don't volunteer in rescue what volunteering really
means and it resonates with them, then it's a job well
done. I take a lot of photos in hopes of getting that one
snapshot of a cat that really speaks to the people who
may be looking to adopt or sponsor. The photo should
express who that cat is and have the ability to connect
to people outside of the organization. It's all about
giving the cats a voice - a chance to say, hey, look at
me!"
Sam an t h a has been volunteer ing for a year and a half
now. ?I picked Cat Tales because it is a local cat shelter
that works within my hometown through the TNR
program. The TNR program is the initial reason I chose
to volunteer with the shelter as I believe it is a vital part
of improving the quality of life for feral cats while
controlling the population. I had begun to work in the
shelter, until time restraints prevented me from coming
every weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed working at the
shelter as well as feeding the cat colonies in Portland
and M iddletown. Nothing beats the joy I feel knowing
that I have provided some love and care to these cats
who so deserve it. Cat Tales is a wonderful organization
that I am proud to be a part of. "
An i k a an d Aer i s have volunteer ed a little over a year.
?We visited Cat Tales two years ago as part of a project
we were doing online, the Carol Corps Cats
(http://carolcorpscats.tumblr.com). After that initial
visit we adopted M adison and about six months after
that Aeris started volunteering one hour a week. In
August 2015 we adopted Cali, who we met volunteering.
Aeris says, ?I like working at Cat Tales because they
care about cats and about people. They do important
work helping cats who don?t have homes and people
who want a cat but can?t afford to buy one. I don?t have
a favorite cat because they are all wonderful and
deserve love.?
Cam i l l a has been volunteer ing since October 2014. ?I
picked Cat Tales because I wanted to take care of cats,
since I can't have my own due to my summer traveling
schedule. I keep coming back because Cat Tales is a
wonderful organization, run by honest, kind, and
committed people. I also love my shift partners, Jessica
and Darlene - it is a pleasure to spend a morning with
them, and I'm glad I found new friends. Finally, I love
the cats at the shelter, and their unique and different
personalities. They make my hectic life so much better!"
Al yssa has been volunteer ing at Cat Tales for about 1
year. ?I chose Cat Tales because I wanted to help cats. I
rescued my 2 cats and wanted to help other cats too. I
keep coming back to Cat Tales because I know that I am
helping all the cats. I love to pet and play with all the
cats too. I enjoy having Oliver on my lap and Tippy
playing with my shoelaces!"
Kayl ei gh an d Li n da have volunteer ed for 3 year s. ?We
picked Cat Tales because we love cats and had adopted
a Cat Tales cat in 2005. We developed bonds with many
of the long-timers, Rufus, Fred and Billy Jo specifically."
Jen n i f er has volunteer ed at Cat Tales ever y M onday
m or ning for the past 3.5 year s. ?One of my friends was
a long-time volunteer and kept telling me how much she
enjoyed her volunteer shift at Cat Tales. I love cats, but I
thought it would be too sad to see so many homeless
cats. Boy, was I wrong! She finally talked me into
coming with her for one of her shifts to see a litter of
kittens. That did it. I've been back every M onday
morning. Though many of the cats came from less than
desirable situations, they are happy and loved once they
are brought to Cat Tales. And they know it! I've adopted
two Cat Tales cats, so far..."

ADOPTIONSPOTLIGHT
Ch eet o: I w as found in the engine of a car and fir em en had to save m e! I?m now
r eady for a for ever hom e. I?m ver y fr iendly and I have a gr eat per sonality. I w ill
m ake a gr eat and lively com panion! Because of my past, dogs and sm all childr en
r eally scar e m e but other cats ar e fine. I r eally am looking for a hom e to call my ow n.
Pl ease adopt m e!
M ar m al ade (l ef t ): I?m a ver y fr iendly and affectionate kitty! I love to gr eet
visitor s at my foster hom e and I love petting and attention. I also enjoy
r elaxing on the r ecliner w ith my foster par ents. Som etim es, w e even take little
catnaps together. Though I love hum ans and other cats, I think a hom e w ithout
dogs is best for m e. Pl ease v i si t an d adopt m e!
Beyon ce (r i gh t ): I?m a ver y sw eet, loving gir l w ho likes to be pet and get
attention. I?m also pr etty unique - I w as bor n w ithout any teeth, but have no
pr oblem eating. I do have FIV, w hich hum ans and dogs cannot get, and, if kept
healthy, I can live a nor m al life. FIV is also ver y r ar e to tr ansm it to other
non-aggr essive cats; I r eally like other cats, so that w on't be a pr oblem . I?m r eady
for a quiet hom e w her e I can cur l up on the bed or couch w ith you.
Pl ease adopt m e!
Dee Dee: I?m a ver y fr iendly and affectionate gir l, extr em ely playful. I w ould love a
house to r un ar ound in. I?m uncom for table w ith being held, but the volunteer s at the
shelter ar e helping m e becom e m or e com for table. I'd be happiest as the only cat so I
can soak up all the love, but I w ould be okay shar ing w ith another non-dom inant
cat. I?m FIV+ but don't let that scar e you. Hum ans and dogs can't catch this and it's
ver y r ar e for non-aggr essive cats to get it. Plus, I?m other w ise a ver y healthy cat. If
you ar e looking for a spunky but sw eet cat, pick m e! I have a lot of love to give.
Pl ease adopt m e!
Gi deon : I?m one of the gr eeter s at Cat Tales and like to give little kisses as w ell. I
just love to be pet and get the attention. Because of my r ough life befor e com ing
to Cat Tales, I w ould pr efer a hom e w her e it's a little less chaotic (so older
childr en and none of those canine cr eatur es). I?m r eady to spend tim e w ith a
new fam ily lounging on a w ar m bed or r elaxing on the couch w ith you.
Pl ease adopt m e i n t o you r h om e!
