Dear Reader,
2014 will be a year commemorating many important
historical and cultural milestones: the 300th birthday of
Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach in
March, the 70th anniversary of the attempted assassination of Hitler on July 20,
the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI, and – last but not least – 25 years
since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
This year has already brought some very sad news as well: the death of the
world-renowned German-speaking artist Maximilian Schell, to whom we
dedicated our cover story. The world will miss him.
On a personal note, this year has brought a big change for me, too: I became
the new executive director of the German-American Heritage Foundation of
the U.S.A.® and the German-American Heritage Museum in Washington,
D.C.. I had previously volunteered for the foundation, and now I am looking forward to the opportunity of further developing this important museum
in the nation’s capital. However, I also remain committed to German World
Magazine as its publisher and editor in chief, while the business in L.A. is run
by Mrs. Sandra Kashani.

Liebe Leser,
2014 ist ein Jahr, in dem wir vielen Meilensteinen in
Geschichte und Kultur gedenken: dem 300. Geburtstag von
Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach im März, dem 70. Jahrestag des
Attentats auf Adolf Hitler am 20. Juli, 100. Jahrestag des Beginn des Ersten
Weltkrieges und nicht zuletzt dem Fall der Berliner Mauer vor
25 Jahren.
Leider haben wir in diesem Jahr auch schon Abschied von einem sehr
prominenten deutschsprachigen Künstler nehmen müssen: Maximilian
Schell, dem wir unsere Titelgeschichte gewidmet haben.
Für mich selbst began dieses Jahr mit einer großen Veränderung:
Ich wurde zur Geschäftsführerin der German-American Heritage
Foundation of the U.S.A.® ernannt. Bisher hatte ich für diese Stiftung,
die das einzige German-American Heritage Museum in Washington
D.C. unterhält, nur ehrenamtlich im Vorstand gearbeitet. Umso mehr
freue ich mich, dass ich nun noch mehr für die Weiterentwicklung
dieses wichtigen Museums tun kann. German World Magazine stehe
ich weiter als Herausgeberin vor, die Geschäftsleitung in L. A. hat
Sandra Kashani übernommen.

I
n the beginning, it seemed as if this year’s
winter games would be a stroll in the park
for German athletes hoping to win medals.
For many consecutive days, Germany was
the clear leader, topping Russia, Canada
and Norway. Germany seemed unstoppable.
Despite this strong beginning, competition
soon overtook the country.The final medal
tally: host country Russia led, winning
precious metal 33 times over (13 gold, 11
silver and 9 bronze medals), followed by
Norway (26 medals total) and Canada (25).
Fourth place went to the U.S.A. (28) and
fifth place was occupied by the Netherlands
(24). Germany had to content itself with
sixth place and a mere tally of 19 medals
(8/6/5), though estimates had indicated
30. Switzerland landed on seventh place
with 11 medals (6/3/2), Belarus ranked
eighth and Austria came in ninth with 17
medals (4/8/5). After Germany’s grandiose
beginning, disappointment regarding the
final tally is now equally large. Michael

Vesper, general director of the German
Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB),
summed it up:“I feel like I do after a soccer
game where we’re leading with 4:0, but
ultimately go home with a 4:4 score.”
The German luge team cleaned up in the
first week, winning multiple competitions:
gold was won in both individual events,
the doubles and the relay by Felix Loch,
Natalie Geisenberger, Tobias Wendl and
Tobias Arlt. What a triumph! Skiing ace
Maria Höfl-Riesch also performed well.
She took gold in the women’s Alpine Skiing
Super Combined -- Slalom and silver in the
Super-G, thereby making herself the most
successful female German skier in Olympic
history. Germany earned gold twice in ski
jumping and once in Nordic combined.
But then came events like curling, short
track, ice hockey, speed skating, ski cross,
and bobsledding. Total failure. Not a single
German medal. As if that weren’t enough,
the world also received the shocking news of
biathlete Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle’s doping
incident.The DOSB excluded the 33-yearold from the German Olympic team after
a positive status on her doping test was
confirmed.
The Austrians also suffered a doping
incident: cross-country skier Johannes Dürr
tested positive for EPO before the 50 km
race and was dropped from the Olympic
team.The 26-year-old had been considered
a favorite. Gold was ultimately earned four
times: thrice in Alpine skiing and once in
snowboarding. Switzerland celebrated gold
medal wins six times, including twice in
Alpine skiing, twice in snowboarding and
twice in cross-country skiing. The U.S.A.
won gold medals for snowboarding (3),
freestyle skiing (3), Alpine skiing (2) and
figure skating (1). ¦

Wintersportler bleiben bei den olympischen Spielen hinter den Erwartungen zurück

nfangs noch sah es so aus, als würden
diese Winterspiele eine Art MedaillenSpaziergang für die deutschen Athleten
werden. Über mehrere Tage hinweg war
Deutschland klarer Spitzenreiter bei den
Medaillen. Vor Russland, vor Kanada, vor
Norwegen. Deutschland schien nicht
zu stoppen zu sein. Doch dann zog die
Konkurrenz mit großen Schritten vorbei.
Die Abschlussbilanz: Gastgeber Russland
führt den Medaillenspiegel von Sotschi mit
insgesamt 33 Mal Edelmetall (13 Gold-, 11
Silber- und 9 Bronzemedaillen) an, gefolgt
von Norwegen (26 Medaillen gesamt)
und Kanada (25). Auf Platz vier landeten
die USA (28), Platz fünf belegten die
Niederlande (24). Deutschland musste sich
mit Platz sechs und lediglich 19 Medaillen
(8/6/5) zufrieden geben – als realistisches
Ziel waren 30 Medaillen angepeilt worden.
Die Schweiz landete auf Platz 7 mit 11
Medaillen (6/3/2), Weißrussland auf Rang
8 und auf Platz neun liegt Österreich mit 17
Medaillen (4/8/5). Nach dem grandiosen
Auftakt Deutschlands ist die Enttäuschung
über das Gesamtergebnis entsprechend
groß. Michael Vesper, Generaldirektor des
Deutschen Olympischen Sportbundes
(DOSB), brachte es auf den Punkt: „Ich
komme mir vor wie nach einem Fußballspiel,

bei dem man 4:0 führt und dann am Ende
mit 4:4 nach Hause geht.“
Die deutschen Rodler sahnten in der
ersten Woche ab und gewannen sämtliche
Wettbewerbe: Es gab Gold in beiden
Einzeldisziplinen, im Doppelsitzer und in
der Team-Staffel für Felix Loch, Natalie
Geisenberger, Tobias Wendl und Tobias
Arlt. Was für ein Triumph! Auch auf SkiAss Maria Höfl-Riesch war Verlass: Sie
holte Gold in der Super-Kombination der
Frauen und Silber im Super-G. Somit ist sie
die erfolgreichste deutsche Skifahrerin in
der Olympia-Geschichte. Im Ski-Springen
gab es zweimal Gold, in der Nordischen
Kombination einmal. Doch dann folgten
Disziplinen wie Curling, Shorttrack,
Eishockey, Eisschnelllauf, Skicross, Zweierund Viererbob. Totalausfall. Keine einzige
deutsche Medaille. Und als wäre das
nicht schon genug, kam dann auch noch
die schockierende Nachricht über den
Dopingfall der Biathletin Evi SachenbacherStehle. Nachdem ihre positive Dopingprobe
bestätigt wurde, schloss der DOSB
die 33-Jähr ige aus dem deutschen
Olympiateam aus.
Auch die Österreicher hatten einen
Doping-Fall zu beklagen: Langläufer Johannes
Dürr wurde vor dem Massenstart-Rennen
über 50 Kilometer positiv auf EPO getestet
und aus dem Olympia-Team ausgeschlossen.
Der 26-Jährige galt als Mitfavorit. Gold gab
es insgesamt viermal – dreimal im Ski Alpin
und einmal im Snowboard. Die Schweiz
konnte sich sechsmal über Gold freuen, unter
anderem zweimal im Ski Alpin, zweimal
im Snowboard und zweimal im Langlauf.

Disziplinen Snowboard (3), Freestyle Skiing
(3), Ski Alpin (2) und Eiskunstlauf (1) ¦

Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister
Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with U.S.
Secretary of State John Kerry in Berlin to
discuss transatlantic and bilateral relations,
as well as current foreign policy matters. In
the next two days, both Foreign Minister
Steinmeier and Secretary Kerry participated
in the Munich Security Conference. They
had last met at the International Conference
on Syria in Montreux a week before Kerry’s
visit to Berlin.
On February 27 and 28, Steinmeier
traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet again
with Secretary Kerry, as well as International
Monetary Fund Managing Director Lagarde
and members of Congress. Part of the
program included a lecture on transatlantic
ties for a new generation that Steinmeier
delivered at the Brookings Institution, a
respected U.S. think tank.
Prior to the meeting with Kerry in
Washington, Steinmeier said the fact that
he was meeting Kerry for the fourth
time in the relatively short period since
taking office showed that there had been
much to do in recent months to tackle the
international challenges. These challenges
included the current situation in Ukraine.
The new government under Prime Minister
Arseniy Yatsenyuk needs to prove that it is a
government for all Ukrainians and that it is
working to bring the country political and
financial stability, Steinmeier said.The latter
was also the topic of discussions with his
American counterpart, and the IMF.
Kerry thanked Steinmeier for his mediation
in Kiev as part of the Weimar Triangle and
called on Russia to take a constructive role
in stabilizing Ukraine. Foreign Minister
Steinmeier also emphasized the international
community’s shared responsibility for the
country, saying, “Ukraine needs breathing
space now to attain political and economic
stability.That means that the E.U., U.S., IMF
and hopefully also Russia must together
ensure that Ukraine receives the financial
assistance it needs.”
Transatlantic relations were a key topic in
the talks. Kerry stressed that the two men had
had a frank and constructive conversation,
which also touched on the tensions between
the two countries following the NSA
surveillance affair. Steinmeier pointed out
that the U.S. and Germany had differing
understandings of the relationship between
freedom and security, but at least the
debate was no longer being carried out
by the media, but instead directly between
government, academia and civil society in
the two countries.
Other subjects discussed by Steinmeier

and Kerry included the nuclear negotiations
with Iran and the conflict in Syria.
Following his meeting with Secretary of
State Kerry, Foreign Minister Steinmeier
met Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee,
then attended a dinner in the German
Ambassador’s residence with Senator Dianne
Feinstein of California. ¦

Roger Federer Bounces Back in Indian Wells
he Swiss tennis pro Roger Federer has
returned with a vengeance, after a back
injury suffered in 2013 at the annual BNP
Paribas Open in Indian Wells that caused him
to drop in the ATP rankings to number 7.
For the legendary champion, who sat out for
two months and has struggled to return to
his previous glory, stormed back into Indian
Wells and proved at the 2014 BNP Paribas
Open that he’s back in top form.
Federer didn’t face a single break point as
he took down Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-1
to advance to the finals for the fifth time. In
the quarterfinals, the Swiss defeated Kevin
Anderson 7-5, 6-1, saving the one break point
he faced in the 69-minute encounter. In the
fourth round, Federer overcame longtime foe
Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-4, after posting backto-back straight set wins over Paul-Henri
Mathieu 6-2, 7-6 (5) and Dmitry Tursunov
7-6 (7), 7-6 (2) in his opening two rounds.

Facing Novak Djokovic in the finals,
Federer was hoping to repeat his 2005 feat in
the tournament, in which he took the title by
winning all 13 sets (he’s won the tournament
four times). But despite entering the 2014
final without losing a single set, Federer
succumbed to Djokovic in a classic tennis
battle, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (3). But for fans of the
game, Federer was a big winner despite the
loss, returning to the form that cemented

Thirteen athletes from
Germany, seven men and six women, were
officially greeted in Sochi, Russia, to the
Paralympic Games. The German delegation
competed in a diverse set of sports ranging
from snowboarding to biathlon.The German
team is much smaller this year than in
previous years, however the trainers and fans
had high hopes for the mix of veterans and
newcomers. In the last Winter Paralympic
games, Germany took home 24 medals total,
13 of them gold. The 2010 team was ranked
number one in terms of weighted medal
count and number two in terms of total
medal count. This year, the German team
garnered 15 medals total, 9 of them gold. ¦

Ende des Kalten Krieges zelebrieren. Daher
planen die Generalkonsuln der Tschechischen
Republik, Deutschlands, Polens und Ungarns gemeinsame, über das Jahr verteilte Veranstaltungen.
Damit soll den historischen Ereignissen von 1989,
welche ein Ende des Kommunismus, Freiheit
ohne Mauern und den Beginn eines vereinigten
Europas herbeiführten, gedacht werden. ¦

aus den letzten 30 Jahren des in Los Angeles

Einrichtung vor, die zurück bis in die 1930er Jahre
reichen. Das JPL wird durch das California Institute of Technology geleitet und arbeitet u.a. für die
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Aministration). Es ist das führende Forschungszentrum in
den USA im Hinblick auf die satellitengestützte
Erforschung des Sonnensystems. Unter den 5.000
Ingenieuren und Wissenschaftlern befinden sich

n March 2, 2014, for the fourth
consecutive year, the Austrian
Trade Commission Los Angeles awarded
the US-A-Biz Award, “the Oscar for
outstanding achievements in economics by
Austrian companies in the U.S. –market.”
The US-A-Biz Award, also known as the
“WirtschaftsOskar,” highlights excellence
in the following categories: spectacular
achievement, trendsetter, innovation,
investment and market penetration. Award
winners were those companies whose
outstanding and innovative achievements

competition within their specific market
niche, says Rudolf Thaler, Austrian trade
commissioner in Los Angeles.
“The goal of this award is to draw the

the Apple and Google stores is spectacular!
“Austria’s enterprises in the U.S.A. are
worthy of Oscars,” said Thaler. “The U.S.A.
is by far Austria’s largest foreign market and
our third exports destination in the world.
All in all, there are around 600 U.S. locations

PORSCHE Design Tower Rises in Miami
I
f you build it, they will come. That’s the
philosophy of Porsche Design Group, as
they join forces with Dezer Development,
LLC, to build a 60-story residence skyscraper
on the beach in Florida. Located in Sunny
Isles Beach just north of Miami, the Porsche
Design Tower is currently under construction,
scheduled for completion in 2016.
The luxury condominiums are already
going fast, however.
Eighty percent of the
units have already been sold, mostly to billionaires (22 of them at last count) who like the
idea of living in the sky, with their Porsches
close by. For each unit features a robotic
parking system that carries owner’s vehicles
to a glass-enclosed “sky garage” overlooking their living room. The idea, as Juergen
Gessler, CEO of Porsche Design Group, told

lemens Torggler isn’t known as an engineer. But that didn’t stop the Austrian
artist from coming up with an amazing design for a door, an idea that is sure to someday
add a distinct flair to any home or office.
Torggler’s doors are made of four (or
eight) square, rotating panels.They slide on
rods and so open sideways instead of in a
traditional manner.The four-square system
has one large opening, while the eight-square
one is the artist’s version of double doors.
All move almost effortlessly at the touch
of a finger, despite being made of glass,
steel or wood. Currently just in the prototype stage,Torggler calls his invention
“Drehplattentür,” which translates into
“flip panel door.” He’s been working
with various styles and materials for years,
adapting the design by using rods, or a
wheel and curved track, or his latest, a
have to leave your car until you are inside
your apartment.”
And, as developer Gil Dezer added, “Residents will be able to see their cars from their
living rooms. So people with fancy cars and
antiques, they will actually have a really nice
view of [both] of them.”

erman car manufacturers took center
stage at the 2014 North American
International Auto Show, with a special
focus on cutting-edge SUV designs that
will help change the way Americans drive.
Mercedes-Benz led the high-end luxury
vehicle pack, announcing their new GLA45
AMG, a compact SUV.The hand-assembled,
high-performance four-cylinder turbo
engine puts out 355 hp of power, yet boasts
low emissions and excellent gas mileage.
With four-wheel drive and a seven-speed
sports transmission, the GLA45 AMG not
only looks cool, but takes on any terrain, too.
The car will roll into dealerships in the fall
of 2014.Also on the Mercedes-Benz slate for
2014 is the S600, the new top model from
the company. With a V12 biturbo engine
and 523 hp, this massive luxury sedan is
anything but compact!
Porsche also showed off their new
compact SUVs at the Motor City show.The
Macan S and Macan Turbo both have twinturbo V6 engines, with the Turbo putting
out a breathtaking 400 hp. It goes from
zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds – and looks
fantastic while doing it. Both arrive in the
U.S. in late spring 2014 and list for $49,900

and $72,300, respectively.The company also
announced the release of a new version of
their iconic Targa sports car at the show.
Audi, too, is jumping into the evergrowing compact SUV market with their
new Q3. Standard features include a 200
hp engine with six-speed transmission and
front-wheel drive, a panoramic sunroof,
heated leather seats and a sleek design that
the company says “pairs coupe-like looks
with the utility of a SUV.” Rolling out in
fall 2014, the price and EPA numbers of
the Q3 will be announced later this year.
Volkswagen (whose umbrella company
the Volkswagen Group actually owns Audi
and Porsche as well) announced that a
midsize SUV for the American market is
in the development stage.The seven-seater
vehicle should come to market in 2016
if all goes as planned. The company also
announced a goal of selling one million
vehicles per year in the U.S. from the VW
and Audi brands by 2018. That lofty goal
may be tough, as VW recently launched an
advertising campaign during Super Bowl
weekend in early February 2014, that
reminds consumers that because of VW’s
top German engineering, they have more
cars on the road with over 100,000 miles
than any other company. Seems people are
keeping their VWs for a long time.
BMW’s presence at the Detroit Auto
Show was all about a different segment of the
market, as they focused on their commitment
to electric vehicles. Announcing the i3,
BMW’s first all-electric car, the company
called it a “visionary concept vehicle” that
is “ideally suited to driving in dense urban
areas.”With 170 hp, the car is electrified with
a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery that goes for
80-100 miles on a single charge. Look for it
in the American market by the summer of
2014, with a base sticker price of $41,350.
And if money is no object, then perhaps
the other environmentally sound BMW
announced at the show is destined for your
garage.The i8 is BMW’s first plug-in hybrid
2 + 2 sports car. Built of lightweight carbon
fiber, it is a sleek, low-slung beast that will
operate with little fuel consumption – the
company estimates that it will get up to
94 mph when it comes to dealerships in
summer 2014.With a list price of $135,700,
it is not for the faint of heart, but at least
buyers won’t be pumping premium gasoline
into this beauty. ¦

North American International Auto
Show 2014 in Detroit im Mittelpunkt - mit
einem besonderen Fokus auf innovativen
SUV-Designs, die die Fahrgewohnheiten
der Amerikaner verändern werden.
Mercedes-Benz führte die LuxusFahrzeug-Gruppe an und gab seinen neuen
GLA 45 AMB - ein kompaktes SUV –
bekannt. Der von Hand zusammengebaute
Hochleistungs-Vierzylinder-Turbo-Motor
mit seinen 355 PS Leistung bietet trotz
allem niedrige Emissionen und einen
hervorragenden Benzinverbrach. Mit
Allradantrieb und einem Sieben-GangSportgetriebe sieht der GLA 45 AMG nicht
nur toll aus, sondern meistert auch jedes
Gelände. Das Auto kommt im Herbst in
den Handel. Für 2014 hat Mercedes-Benz
zudem noch den S 600 auf der Liste, das

die Volkswagen Gruppe, Audi und auch
Porsche besitzt) verkündete, dass ein
Mittelkasse SUV für den amerikanischen

Menschen ihre VWs für eine lange Zeit.
BMWs Präsenz auf der Detroit-AutoShow stand ganz im Zeichen eines
anderen Marktsegmentes, da sich BMW
auf ihr Engagement für Elektrofahrzeuge
konzentriert hatte. Bei der Bekanntgabe
des i3, des ersten vollelektrischen Autos von
BMW, sprach das Unternehmen von einem
“visionären Konzeptfahrzeug - für das Fahren
in dicht besiedelten städtischen Gebieten
perfekt geeignet“. Das Auto ist mit 170 PS

through life and many different areas of art,”
Maximilian Schell once said. On the night
of February 1, 2014, the legendary actor,
film and stage director, musician, painter and
author died in Austria, the land of his birth,
at the age of 83. The world had lost a true
original.
For starters, “Maxie” Schell was one of
the most successful and influential German-
speaking actors in the world. He won the
Academy Award for Best Actor in 1962 for
the American film “Judgment at Nuremberg,”
only his second acting role in Hollywood.
And that was only the beginning, for Schell
had the golden touch in every artistic
discipline he tried.
In fact, arts were in his blood. Born
December 8, 1930, in Vienna, to the
renowned Swiss playwright, poet and novelist

As his fame grew, Schell was not just shining as an actor. He received
a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination for “First Love,” his
1970 film screenwriting-directing debut, then followed up with another
Oscar nomination for “The Pedestrian” in 1974, a picture he wrote,
produced, directed and starred in. His greatest success as a film director,
though, came in 1975 with “End of the Game.” That same year, Jon
Voight, his lead actor in the film, asked Schell to become the godparent
to his newborn daughter, Angelina Jolie. He also distinguished himself
as a documentary filmmaker, Oscar nominated yet again in 1984 for
“Marlene,” his masterful look at Marlene Dietrich, and in 2002 with
“My Sister Maria.”That personal, loving film reveals his sister’s struggle
with dementia, a controversial portrait that did not shy away from
showing the terrible consequences and reality of dementia.

Für sein Regiedebüt
„Erste Liebe“ (1970)
bekam er eine OscarNominierung,
es
folgte der Film „Der
Fußgänger“ (1974), den
er schrieb, produzierte
und inszenierte. Seinen
g rößten Erfolg als
Regisseur feierte er mit
„Der Richter und sein Henker“ (1975) nach einer Vorlage von
Friedrich Dürrenmatt, den er als seinen besten Freund bezeichnete.
Hauptdarsteller Jon Voight machte Maximilian Schell sogar
zum Taufpaten seiner neugeborenen Tochter, heute bekannt als
Angelina Jolie.
In seinem Dokumentarfilm „Marlene“ erlaubte er der
porträtierten Marlene Dietrich, einmal ganz Stimme zu sein.
Im Jahre 1984 hatte sich der Star bereits aus der Öffentlichkeit
zurückgezogen. Maximilian Schell respektierte Dietrichs
Entscheidung, nicht mehr gefilmt werden zu wollen, überredetet
sie aber zu Audioaufnahmen und baute schließlich nur mit der
Stimme der Diva, Szenen aus ihren Filmen und Impressionen
ihrer für den Dreh nachgestellten Wohnung einen einfühlsamen

In the 1980s, Schell began to work in the opera, directing
productions ranging from “La Traviata” to “Coronet” to his 2001
and 2005 triumphs with Plácido Domingo and the L.A. Opera of
“Lohengrin” and “Der Rosenkavalier.” And later in his career, Schell
could be found performing as a concert pianist with the Berlin
Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony.
During his illustrious career, Maximilian Schell split most of his
time between Los Angeles and his farmhouse in Carinthia, Austria.
However, during the Bush era, he cut his ties with the U.S. “It was not
the free and creative country that I knew,” he once explained in an
interview. The handsome actor was always known for his love affairs,
sometimes slightly notorious ones. In the 1960s, he made countless
headlines while dating Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhitiari, the ex-Queen
of Persia, whose mother was a German national. Schell did not
marry until he was in his mid-fifties; finally, in 1986, he married the
Russian actress Natalya Andrejchenko.Three years later their daughter
Nastassja Schell was born, but the couple split in 2002 and finally
divorced in 2005. But love came one last time to the famed star, for
in 2013, at the age of 82, he married again, tying the knot with his
long-time partner, the German-Croatian opera singer Iva Mihanovic,
who is 47 years his junior.
With Iva at his side, Maximilian Schell slipped away on February
1, and was buried on February 8 in Preitenegg, Carinthia, close to
his Austrian home. And with his passing, both the German-speaking
world and the rest of the planet have lost one of the greatest artistic
talents to ever walk the earth. ¦

freie und kreative Land, das ich kannte,“ erklärte Schell in einem
Interview.
Furore machte Schell auch mit seinem Privatleben. Seine drei Jahre
dauernde Liaison mit Soraya, der Ex-Gattin des letzten persischen
Schahs, sorgte in den sechziger Jahren für unzählige Schlagzeilen.
1986 heiratete Schell die russische Schauspielerin Natalja
Andreitschenko. Vier Jahre später wurde ihre gemeinsame Tochter
Nastassja Schell geboren. Doch das Paar trennte sich 2002. 2005
folgte die Scheidung.
Im hohen Alter von 82 Jahren entschloss er sich nochmals
zu heiraten und zwar seine 47 Jahre jüngere deutsch-kroatische
Lebensgefährtin, die Opernsängerin Iva Mihanovic.
Am 18. Januar brach Maximilian Schell bei Fernseh-Dreharbeiten
in einem Kitzbühler Hotel auf Grund einer Lungenentzündung
zusammen. Er erholte sich scheinbar schnell und wurde nur
wenige Tage später aus der Klinik entlassen, Am 30. Januar
wurde er im Landeskrankenhaus Innsbruck auf Grund schwerer
Rückenschmerzen operiert. Aus der Narkose erwachte er nicht
mehr und starb in der folgenden Nacht. Seine Frau Iva soll bis
zuletzt an seiner Seite gewesen sein.
Mit Maximilian Schell ist einer der größten Schauspieler und
Kunstschaffenden des deutschen Sprachraums verstorben. Am 8.
Februar wurde Schell in Preitenegg nah seiner Alm beigesetzt. ¦

n our modern classical music world, we
are growing accustomed to superstar performers whose seductive gowns and designer
suits create an equal buzz to their talents.
Juja Wang, the high-heeled and short-skirted
piano sensation from Beijing, and Lang Lang,
who is heralded by The New York Times as
the “hottest artist on the classic music planet,”
are the most famous examples, and both hail
from China.
A different kind of classical star is the
Taiwanese-born Chinese pianist Rueibin
Chen. He’s a powerhouse musician with an
impressive list of international competition
awards, a flourishing career across the globe
and a biography that reads like a novel. But
Chen, who was first taught piano by his father,
grew up in very modest circumstances and
even today, with all his successes, is never
flashy. Instead, he lets his talent on the ivories
do all the talking.
At 13, he was selected by the Taiwanese
government as an extraordinarily gifted
student and granted a passport to study at

raftwerk, the German electronic music pioneers, performed live from March 18-21,
2014, doing eight 3-D shows over four evenings at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Featured were works from the group’s key albums and film soundtracks, including “Autobahn” (1974), “Radio-Activity” (1975), “The Man-Machine” (1978) and “Tour de France”
(2003).This iconic group, founded in Duesseldorf in 1970, created a modern techno legacy
that has stood the test of time. The Kraftwerk sold-out concert series launched the L.A.
Philharmonic’s “Minimalist Jukebox Festival,” which runs until May 4.

the Vienna Conservatory. However, the
conservatory only provided the teenager with
a scholarship, but neither lodging nor a piano.
Staying with a host family and speaking not a
word of German, Rueibin discovered music
as his universal language and refuge from the
worries of daily life without the comfort of his
own family. After graduating the conservatory
with honors, he was accepted as the only
student of Asian descent amongst five disciples
of the legendary pianist Lazar Berman at
the Hannover Hochschule für Musik in
Germany. Today Chen is an honorary Austrian
citizen based in Asia who spends most of
his time on the road, touring the world’s
most-renowned stages.
Chen has won a total of 20 medals at
international piano competitions throughout
his career, among them the coveted Arthur
Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv, as
well as the Rachmaninoff and the Bellini
competitions in Italy.
His recent performances at two of
the most distinguished concert halls
in the U.S., the Bing Hall at Stanford
University and the Segerstrom Center
for the Ar ts in Orange County
(both in California), have gained him a
multitude of enthusiastic American followers.
And he will go down in the history books of
the newly opened Wallis Annenberg Center
for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills,
as the first solo artist to perform there.
His two Rachmaninoff recitals, scheduled
for March 27-28, have been sold out for
many weeks in advance. Chen, whose soulful
playing and exquisite technique is paired
with a peerless lack of the egomania often
associated with world-class artists, is a
transcendent talent whose performances are
not to be missed. ¦

Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton and F. Murray Abraham, along with a
slew of other famed actors (every one an Oscar nominee!) including
Ralph Fiennes, Bill Murray, Jude Law, Edward Norton, Owen Wilson
and Saoirse Ronan, all passing by on the cobblestoned streets as they
gathered to be a part of writer-director Wes Anderson’s “The Grand
Budapest Hotel,” which was filmed in Goerlitz.
Subbing in for Anderson’s fictional country of “Zubrowka,” the quaint
city provided the perfect backdrop for his critically acclaimed comic
tale of a famous European hotel and its inhabitants, following them as
they cope with the changing landscape of life occurring in the 1920s
and ‘30s, between the two world wars.
“Goerlitz has so much character in all its buildings that we realized
we could pretty much make the entire movie there,” the film’s producer
Jeremy Dawson explained later via the film’s press kit. So the production
team transformed the city’s beautiful (yet defunct) 1913 art nouveau
department store into the fictional hotel and also shot many scenes out
on the streets of the city.
“Another thing that was nice about working in a small town is that
we got to know many of the people and started putting them in the
film,” Dawson added. “So the guy who was the waiter at the restaurant
one night would be an extra in a scene the next day.”
Having a great experience soaking up the local atmosphere is a
running theme with Hollywood’s biggest stars; British actress Kate
Winslet, whose Oscar-winning performance in 2008’s “The Reader”
also took place mostly in Goerlitz, was particularly enamored with the
people she found there.

zum nahegelegenen Dresden - völlig verschont geblieben, überdauerte
die sächsische Stadt Görlitz 41 Jahre DDR und funkelt heute entlang
der Neiße mit originalen und wunderschön restaurierten Gebäuden.
Eigentlich im Jahr 1945 in zwei Städte geteilt, mit einer östlichen Seite
der Stadt auf der einen Seite des Flusses, die jetzt ein Teil von Polen und
als Zgorzelec bekannt ist und mit der anderen Seite der Stadt durch
eine einfache Fußgängerbrücke miteinander verbunden ist, ist das herrliche Görlitz zu einer Art Muss als Drehort für Hollywoods historische
Produktionen geworden.
So konnte es Touristen oder Einheimischen im Winter 2012/13
immer wieder passieren, die Oscar-Preisträger Adrien Brody, Tilda
Swinton und F. Murray Abraham zusammen mit einer Reihe von
anderen berühmten Schauspielern (jeder für einen Oscar nominiert!)
zu sehen. Auch Ralph Fiennes, Bill Murray, Jude Law, Edward Norton,
Owen Wilson und Saoirse Ronan gingen auf den Kopfsteinpflasterstraßen, als sie zu den Dreharbeiten von Wes Andersons „The Grand
Budapest Hotel“ nach Görlitz kamen.
Gelegen in Andersons fiktivem Land „Zubrowka“ bot die
malerische Stadt die perfekte Kulisse für seine viel gepriesene Komödie
über ein berühmtes europäisches Hotel und seine Bewohnern im
Wandel der Zeit in den 20er- und 30er-Jahren zwischen den beiden
Weltkriegen.
„Görlitz‘ Gebäude haben so viel Charakteristisches, dass wir erkannten, dort den gesamten Film machen zu können”, erklärte der Produzent

“It was an incredible experience in
Germany,” Winslet recalled during the press
junket to support the film. “Every day was an
absolute joy.”
Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Quentin
Tarantino and company came to town in 2008
to shoot part of “Inglourious Basterds,” while
Jackie Chan bounded off buildings during his
trip “Around the World in 80 Days” back in
2003. And Brian Percival’s sublime adaptation
of Markus Zusak’s World War II novel “The
Book Thief ” brought Oscar winner Geoffrey
Rush, nominee Emily Watson and luminous
newcomer Sophie Nélisse in for an extended
stay, as Goerlitz presented a perfectly preserved
neighborhood for the story’s setting. With so
many productions coming along all the time,
it’s no wonder people have started calling this
place “Goerliwood”!
Beyond doing a bit of star spotting,
there are plenty of must-see sights in
Goerlitz- Zgorzelec. Simply wander out the
front door of whatever hotel you’ve chosen
and you’ll be transported into what has
often been called “Germany’s most beautiful
city.”

Die Begeisterung über diesen Ort ist
bei vielen der größten Hollywood Stars zu finden: die britische Schauspielerin Kate Winslet,
die hier 2008 für die Dreharbeiten zu „Der
Vorleser“ vor der Kamera stand, war besonders
angetan von der dortigen Bevölkerung.
„Es war eine unglaubliche Erfahrung in
Deutschland,“ so Winslet während eines
Pressetermins, „Jeder Tag hat einfach Freude
gemacht.“

Once fortified with walls back when it was a key intersection of two
of Europe’s oldest trade routes, the Via Regia and the Salt Road, the
remnants of those fortifications remain, as do some of the protective
towers that used to ring the town.The main city tower is the Kaisertrutz,
a massive circular structure built in the 15th century that today marks the
entrance to the city and houses a museum.There you’ll find permanent
exhibits about the city and the surrounding region, beginning with
prehistoric finds dating back to 10,000 B.C., as well as paintings and
crafts hailing from the 14th century to today. Travel back in time and
immerse yourself in history here.
Of course, there is history everywhere you go in Goerlitz. Take
in Peterskirche (Church of St. Peter and Paul), the Lutheran church
originally begun in 1425; it will be easy to spot, with its towering
twin spires and green copper roof.Visit Sunday to be sure to hear the
famed Sun Organ, the first of which was installed in 1703. Explore
the Untermarkt area, with its variously hued buildings, including the
Schoenhof (Beautiful Court), the oldest civil Renaissance building in
Germany, built in 1526 and which now houses the Silesian Museum.
See the impressive Rathaus (City Hall) nearby, dating from the 1300s,
and don’t miss the two clock faces on the hall’s tower, put in place in
1524. Soak in the beautiful Baroque buildings that line the streets and
enjoy their brilliantly colored doors and shutters along the way.
Make time to stroll across the bridge to Poland; you’ll barely notice
the difference between the two countries – and cities – since the two
places were one single town for epochs. Indulge in a pierogi (stuffed
dumpling) in Zgorzelec while taking in the views along the river, then
head back to the German side and stop into the Goerlitz Toy Museum,
which boasts 4,000 toys dating from 1850.
In Spring 2014, do the annual Goerlitz Jazz Festival from May 21-25,
or on June 1 strap on your running shoes and compete in the yearly
European Marathon that takes you through both Germany and Poland.
And consider a visit on Restoration Day (June 15), when tourists and
locals are allowed an exclusive chance to go inside over 20 buildings in
numerous architectural styles that are usually not open to the public.
But no matter what you do while in the picturesque city of Goerlitz,
make sure to keep your eyes open. That man passing you on the street
might just be Hollywood icon and Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage.
“I love Goerlitz,” Cage recently told a German journalist. “It feels
like the Middle Ages. I’d like to move there.” ¦

Percivals exzellentes Drehbuch von Markus Zusaks Roman „Die
Bücherdiebin“ brachte Oscar-Preisträger Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson und Newcomer Sophie Nélisse in die Stadt, da es in Görlitz ein
perfekt erhaltenes Viertel für diese Geschichte gibt. Mit so vielen
Hollywood-Produktionen ist es keine Wunder, das Görlitz mittlerweile
als „Goerliwood” bekannt ist.
Außer nach Stars Ausschau zu halten, gibt es sehr viele Sehenswürdigkeiten in Görlitz- Zgorzelec, die man nicht verpassen sollte.
Aus der Zeit als Görlitz noch an der Hauptkreuzung der Via Regia
und der Salzstrasse lag sind noch die Stadtmauern und Wachtürme
zum Teil erhalten geblieben. Der Hauptturm ist der Kaisertrutz, ein
massives, rundes Gebäude aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, das heute den
Eingang zur Stadt markiert und ein Museum beherbergt. Hier findet

his groundbreaking albums – “Low” (1977),
“Lodger” (1979) and “Heroes” (1977) – all
of which were inspired by 1970s West Berlin
subculture, as well as by the city’s rich cultural

Explore the Rich Heritage
of Charlemagne in Aachen
It’s been 1200 years since Emperor Charlemagne died at his palace
in Aachen in 814; and that milestone is cause for celebration in that

three major exhibitions there will honor his immense significance
to Aachen and the whole of Western Europe. Entitled “Places of
Power,” “The Art of Charlemagne” and “Treasures,” the exhibits will be

Bertha Benz’s Adventure
Retracing the World’s First Road Trip

W
hile Dr. Carl Benz is recognized as
the inventor of the first patented
motorcar, it is his wife Bertha who deserves
credit for introducing it to the public.
Just before dawn in early August 1888,
Bertha quietly opened the doors to her
husband’s workshop at their Mannheim,
Germany, home. Enlisting the help of her
two oldest children, Eugen and Richard,
she pushed his three-wheeled prototype
motorwagen away from the house so she
could start the single-cylinder engine without
waking him. Her plan, as spelled out in a note
she left on the kitchen table, was to take her
sons to visit their grandmother in Pforzheim
more than 60 miles away.
The journey on dusty country lanes better
suited for horse and carriage travel was an
arduous one. Not only did Bertha navigate
without a map, she had to handle a number
of unexpected emergencies, including
unclogging a fuel line with her hatpin and
using a garter to fix a short-circuited ignition
wire. Difficulty climbing hills led to her
suggestion to Carl to add lower gears to that
prototype vehicle, which marked the early
beginnings of the now legendary MercedesBenz brand.
Today motorists can retrace this pioneer’s
epic 120-mile round trip on the Bertha Benz
Memorial Route with stops at Stadt-Apotheke
Wiesloch (the City Pharmacy Wiesloch), the
first pharmacy where she purchased ligroin for
fuel, at their Ladenburg villa and other places
of historical significance.The sign-posted route
winds through a number of charming towns
and cities in the Baden-Württemberg region,
following a figure-8 loop as she choose a different route home to avoid the steep mountains.

Mannheim, Bertha’s starting point, honors Carl Benz with a
memorial featuring a replica of his earliest automobile. It stands across
from Friedrichsplatz (Friedrich Park), a popular park with a 60-meter
Romanesque water tower, fountains and flower gardens. Be sure to

stop in there, and at the Baroque Palace of Mannheim, completed in
1760, which survived World War II bombings and offers an insight
into royal life in its museum, with collections of art, furnishings and
other memorabilia.
The couple and their five children later moved to Ladenburg, where
the patriarch and his sons started Benz & Cie in 1906. You can visit
their restored home and the original garage on the grounds. One of
Benz’s first factories, just down the road, now houses the Automuseum
Dr. Carl Benz. The Patent-Motorwagen No. 3, the original car that
Bertha drove, is here, along with her black wedding dress and many
vintage Benz and Mercedes-Benz vehicles, bicycles and motorbikes.
Allow time to explore Ladenburg’s Old Town and its 12th-century
Sankt Gallus Church and Martinstor (Martin’s Gate). You can
even visit the Cemetery of Ladenburg where both Carl and Bertha
are buried.
The route meanders through Karlsruhe, Carl’s birthplace, and
Heidelberg, with its centuries-old castle, historic Old Bridge and
medieval Old Town with a lively market square. In Bruchsal, where
a blacksmith shop repaired a chain for Bertha, tour Bruchsal Palace,
built in 1720 for the Prince-Bishops of Speyer.
Pforzheim, her birthplace, is known as the Gold City because of its
jewelry and watch-making industries. The Museum of Jewelry and
Worlds of Jewelry help tell the history of these industries through
the ages.
On your return trip travel to Bretten to visit its medieval
old town and Hockenheim to see its Formula One racetrack and
Motor Sports Museum. From Pforzheim, you can take a short
detour to Stuttgart, ten miles south, where the headquarters
of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche now stand. Both have museums
chronicling the impressive history of their automobiles and other
vehicles. Porsche offers factory tours by reservation in both

Route in Lower Saxony
White asparagus is revered as the epitome of spring and no
other produce creates as much culinary excitement among
Germans as this slender vegetable.The harvesting season for asparagus has its own name, "Spargelzeit," and runs from around
mid-April, when the first crop is harvested, through the feast of St.
John the Baptist on June 24.
White asparagus is a particularly labor-intensive vegetable since it
must be cut by hand before it emerges from the soil and is exposed
to light, which would cause it to turn green. An old farmer’s rule dictates that asparagus is best "Morgens gestochen und mittags verzehrt"
(“picked in the morning and eaten at lunch”) so about 50 percent of
all white asparagus purchased in Germany is obtained from roadside
stands, guaranteeing its freshness.
One fifth of all asparagus grown in
Germany comes from Lower Saxony
(Niedersachsen) and is grown in the
regions between the Lüneburg Heath
and the Oldenburg Münsterland. In
recognition of the region's role in assuring that Germans get their
fill of this delicacy, a 470-mile stretch of road linking the asparagusproducing towns was dedicated as the Lower-Saxony Asparagus Road

From January 14 to 17, 2014, it was that
time of year again: for the fourteenth time, the
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin opened
its gates to industry visitors and fashionistas
from throughout the world.
During Fashion Week, over 50 designers presented their Fall/Winter 2014/2015
collections to around 200,000 international
guests. It took 225 cans of hairspray to create breathtaking hairstyles on models, while
around 512 assistants made Fashion Week
models shine in their best light. Along with

national celebrities Franziska Knuppe, Bonnie
Strange, Rebecca Mir and Ursula Karven,
international guests contributed especial
glamour to the event. The model Georgia
May Jagger herself became a winning testimonial to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Actress
Elizabeth Hurley, who visited Berlin Fashion
Week for the first time, attracted special attention from fans and press representatives.
She attended designer Marc Cain’s showing.
It’s almost become a ritual since July of
2011 designer Hien Le, originally from Laos,
has opened the twice-yearly Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week Berlin. Le again proved his
ability to wow critics with his Fall/Winter
collection, consisting of wearable pieces inspired by architectural silhouettes.
Audience favorite Guido Maria Kretschmer
provoked excitement across the board. After
basing last season’s collection on African animal themes, Kretschmer enticed viewers into
a harmonious world of colors featuring floral
motifs throughout his Fall/Winter collection
called “ALTAI.”

Only recently, Guido was also seen on U.S.
television! He made a guest appearance on the
modeling casting show “The Face,” together
with top model Karoliná Kurková.
Designer Michael Michalsky attracted famous individuals and fashionistas with his
brilliant closing show. The “Michalsky StyleNite” is, after, all, Berlin Fashion Week’s
biggest highlight. In contrast to most other
designers, Michalsky doesn’t show his collection in the famous “Mercedes-Benz Fashion
Week Tent” at the Brandenburg Gate. Instead,
he uses the “Tempodrom,” a popular Berlin
event location.Why is “StyleNite” so popular?
Michael Michalsky always creates new surprises for his guests. His current collection’s
motto is “City Love” and is a homage to Asian
metropolises like Shanghai and Beijing.
The spectacle was musically accompanied
by the Swedish band “The Majority Says”
and later by British singer Lisa Stansfield, and
ended with the legendary StyleNite aftershow party where designers, models and
guests celebrated and danced until morning.
Despite some melancholy over the week’s
end, excitement has already begun to build
again: the fashion circus is coming back once
again to the German capital in early July. ¦

Berlin is making history this year by becoming the first city
with its own domain name. Websites with the domain .berlin will
begin cropping up later in 2014, and auctions are already going
on to snap up the best names. 2014 is already seeing a bloom in
new domains, including .pizza and .shop. Berlin will be home to
the first city domain name, and the list is rapidly growing with
other cities that are interested in making their name a brand.
The cost of simply registering a domain name starts anywhere
from $10 to $40 per year.
Both domestic and international travelers to Berlin are certain to find their trip planning much easier by searching for
.berlin domains, but the real benefit will be to companies. For
large international corporations, using this domain name will
help to set the Berlin office apart. “Berlin addresses can now
be a trademark for our city and for companies based here,”
said Nils Busch-Petersen, head of the trade association of
Berlin and Brandenburg. There’s little doubt that for everyone
in the world, the .berlin name will make searching and finding

The German Schools of Connecticut

t’s 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and
the German Schools in Stamford and
West Hartford, Conn., (often referred to
as GSC), are beginning their day. At the
Stamford middle school that the GSC takes
over every the weekend, there is a Mommy
and Me class filled with two year olds, who
are learning to sing German songs, play
games and follow simple directions.They’re
encouraged and helped by their parents and
by GSC teachers.This is the only GSC class
where parents are welcome to participate.
Kindergarteners are having a test. When
their teacher points to a picture on the
blackboard, they circle the word in their
workbooks to show where it belongs in their
house. Her question,“Does the refrigerator
belong in the bathroom?” is met by giggles,
assuring her that they understand what she
asked in German. Children who are in the
nine-to-eleven-year-old class continue their

letters and learning European capitals. Some
high-school students are preparing for
the two Sprachdiplom exams, the official
German two-day exams testing mastery of
spoken and written German and knowledge
of German culture, history and literature.
They are a prerequisite for entering a
German, Swiss or Austrian university.
Students and parents commit to spending
every Saturday morning at GSC throughout
the school year.There are tests, report cards
and homework. Midmorning recess is a
favorite time as students gather with their
friends and purchase snacks.
According to the New York Times,“after
Spanish and French, German is still the third
most-studied language in the United States,”
despite the fact that it is offered in fewer and
fewer public or private schools. In 1978,
the co-founder of the German Schools in
Connecticut, Dr. Renate Ludanyi, and some
of his colleagues were concerned about this
decline.They realized that the distance from
West Hartford to Stamford was too far to
travel each week.Thus, from the beginning,
they created two schools on two campuses.
The school in Stamford has 260
students who come from the surrounding
metropolitan New York City area, while
the one in West Hartford has 104 students
enrolled, from thirty neighboring towns.
Adults have their own classes. Some are
sharpening their language skills while their
children attend classes, while others are
furthering their knowledge for business and
social pursuits; and some simply enjoy being
able to spend a morning with Germanspeaking people. Chris Wilson and Peggy
Riotte are two participants in the advanced
class. “We speak exclusively in German,”
explains Chris. “Sometimes we listen to

German radio or read articles from the
German magazine, Stern.”
Samantha Hart has come full circle
at GSC. She started as a tot, passed both
Sprachdiplomes and went on to graduate
from Fairfield University in Connecticut.
She now teaches at GSC. Samantha’s not
the only one to take German into the
second generation. She was preceded by
Charlotte Bareiss, who first helped her family
strengthen their heritage language, then
she graduated from Georgetown University
with a major in German and became a
teacher at GSC. Her younger sister, Isabel,
has completed her last DSD examinations
and their mother, Annette, remains active
on the board.
“Fluency in German helped my daughter
get into her first choice of college,” says
one mother. A student agrees.“My business
studies got me the interview, but I am
convinced my fluency in German got me
the job.”
Both campuses have two tracks: one for
beginners and non-native speakers, the other
for advanced students – “heritage language
speakers” – those with native and near-native
fluency. Classes are offered based on age
and language proficiency and are taught by
qualified and dedicated teachers, most with
German as their native tongue.
These schools are private and non profit.
The tuition is reasonable, at $850 a year
with family discounts. In order to keep the
teachers paid, the buildings where classes
are held rented and insurance and other
administrative fees covered, fundraising
is ongoing. Parent volunteers fill all
administrative positions and help when
needed.

Urs Klarer is an example. He handles
advertising and public relations for the
school. A Swiss citizen, his 13-year-old
triplets and their older brother have attended
the Stamford school since they were young.
“Because my wife speaks Spanish to the
children, not much German is spoken at
home,” he says. “When they visit their
grandparents in Switzerland or talk on
the phone, they’re able to communicate
in German.”
Although most students are of
German, Austrian or Swiss descent, this
is an international school. When Andrew
Jurgielewicz’s parents asked him what he
wanted for his thirteenth birthday, his
response was German lessons. “Keep in
mind,” says his mother, Patty, “that neither
my husband nor I have any German
heritage.”
Others choose to attend to strengthen
their academic portfolios. The Public Act
0801380 bill, passed in Connecticut in
2008, allows students who study privately
to receive up to four high-school credits in
world languages. Selective colleges expect
students to take the Standard Achievement
Tests (SAT), the Advanced Placement (AP)
and three subject tests, with German being
one choice.
German culture is embraced through
traditional celebrations throughout the
year. In September students from the
Stamford school design and ride upon a
float in NewYork City’s Steuben Day Parade.
In November, both schools celebrate St.
Martin’s Day; in December,Weihnachtsfeier;
and in February, the Fasching Carnival.West
Hartford celebrates Reimfest in March,
and the season-ending Maifeier, where
all classes perform German skits and sing
songs. Two new celebrations are the Christ
Kindle Market at Christmas and Fastnacht
on Shrove Tuesday.
Each year in Stamford, every student
contributes a page to the annual yearbook,
which is written completely in German.
Last year’s theme was Deutschland ist
mehr (Germany is more), mentioning
different specialties such as food, science
and culture. West Hartford participates in
the Connecticut Organization of Language
Teachers (C.O.L.T.), joining about 25 to
30 other schools with students reciting a
poem or singing a song in the language
they’re studying.
These German schools prepare students
to enter the world of international business,
art and politics with a strong knowledge
of the country with the largest European
economy and the world leader in industry
and science. Increasingly, students opt for
university study in Europe. For others it
offers a comfort zone to understand enough
German to order off a menu, read a map or
communicate with relatives.
Both schools have the same goal: to teach
the German language and culture while
enhancing and fostering United StatesGerman friendships and adding value to
the American community.

Germany in Europe: More than just
another country in the heart of Europe?
S
tudents at Brown University do not only
recognize the colors of the German flag
or the face of Chancellor Angela Merkel:
“the Campus Weeks definitely gave more
exposure to the German language and
Germany [in general],” says Jane Sokolosky,
senior lecturer in the university’s German
studies program. More than 30 universities
and 6,000 students across the United States
are taking part in the Campus Weeks
organized by the German Information
Center (GIC) at the German Embassy in
Washington, D.C.. This year’s campaign is
titled Germany in Europe and focuses on
the dynamic role Germany has in Europe.
A selection of engaging contests and
events attract students and bring them into
the lecture theatres. Participating universities
offer various panel discussions, lectures and
conferences about Germany’s changing role
in Europe, as well as transatlantic relations.
Outside of the auditorium, students organize
soccer tournaments, participate in poetry
slams and compete against each other in
essay contests.The campaign is a great success
- and everything is related to Germany!
Students of the Catholic University of
America confirm that the Campus Weeks
raise Germany’s profile. “Germany is much
more than beer and bratwurst”, says Andrew
Krema, 21. “Many of my fellow students
consider Germany one of the world’s most
modern and progressive countries.”
The campaign is a perfect opportunity
for university officials to advertise their own
programs. “The Campus Weeks offer the
opportunity to organize events in a larger
context,” says Claudia Bornholdt, associate
professor at the department of modern
languages and literature at the Catholic
University of America. German faculties
as well as faculties for European studies are
struggling to attract applicants. In many
American high schools, the teaching of
foreign languages such as German, as well

the transfer of knowledge about Europe
and Germany, is often under-developed.
“Language is a challenge for German studies,”
Bornholdt says. She is pleased that due to
the campaign, the number of applications
is constantly increasing: “Students who
consider German studies are aware of the
significance of German as a language.”
The lack of German studies in many
American high schools is also being
addressed by Brown University which is
why Sokolosky and her students once again
organized a high school outreach during
the Campus Weeks. In October 2013, the
young visitors received a guided campus
tour by students of the German department;
they participated in a traditional scavenger
hunt and had many of their questions
answered. “German is becoming more and
more important”, says Cassandra Carothers,
president of Brown University’s German
club, “German is relevant for internships,
study, and career.” The student’s activities
paid off: In recent years the number of
students who chose German as their major
increased – rising by 20 percent in the year
2013 alone. And an increasing number
of American students decided to spend a
semester in Germany during the course of
their studies.
“Germany’s importance is increasing,”
Bornholdt says, “Many of our students
have chosen Germany-related topics for
their final exam papers.” The traditional
clichés and stereotypes held by students in
the past have been replaced by a modern
view on Germany. An in-depth assessment
of Germany’s role in Europe during the
Campus Weeks clearly contributes to this
development. Germany is being regarded
as a driving force in solving the debt crisis.
Within the EU, it has gained a reputation as
the country that speaks out for the smaller
member states and that is spearheading
efforts to enhance European integration.

weeks left a strong impression with the
students: Germany is more than just another

Germany in Europe: Mehr als nur ein Land im Herzen Europas?

icht nur die Farben der Deutschen
Flagge oder das Gesicht von
Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel sind
den Studenten der Brown Universität in
Providence jetzt bekannt versichert Jane
Sokolosky, Dozentin am Lehrstuhl für
Deutschlandstudien der Brown Universität,
„die Campuswochen zeigen auch viele
neue und unbekannte Facetten von
Deutschland.“ Neben der renommierten
Brown Universität beteiligen sich wieder fast
30 Universitäten und über 6.000 Studenten
an der aktuellen Kampagne des German
Information Center (GIC) der Deutschen
Botschaft in Washington D.C.. Das Motto
lautet Germany in Europe und widmet
sich der dynamischen Rolle Deutschlands
in Europa.
Zahlreiche Aktivitäten ziehen die
Studenten in die Hörsäle. Neben
Podiumsdiskussionen, Vorlesungen und
Konferenzen rund um die wachsende
Rolle Deutschlands in Europa oder die
transatlantische Partnerschaft wird auch
abseits des Audimax ein buntes Programm
geboten. Die Studenten organisieren
Fußballturniere und Filmvorführungen,
sie beteiligen sich an spontanen
Gedichtvorträgen und messen sich in EssayWettbewerben – alles rund um Deutschland
und mit Erfolg! Das Bewusstsein gegenüber
Deutschland wächst, bestätigen Studenten
der Catholic University of America.
„Deutschland ist weit mehr als Bier und
Bratwurst“, sagt Andrew Krema, 21.
„Für viele meiner Kommilitonen gilt
Deutschland als eines der modernsten und
fortschrittlichsten Länder der Welt.“
Für die Verantwortlichen an den
Partneruniversitäten sind die Campuswochen
eine perfekte Gelegenheit, um auf das
eigene Angebot hinzuweisen. „Sie geben
uns die Möglichkeit in einem größeren
Rahmen Veranstaltungen zu organisieren“,
sagt Claudia Bornholdt, Dozentin am
Lehrstuhl für moderne Sprachen und
Literatur der Catholic University of
America. Besonders die Deutschfakultäten
und Fakultäten für Europäische Studien
müssen intensiv für ihre Programme
werben. Fremdsprachenausbildung und
Wissensvermittlung über Europa und
Deutschland kommen an vielen höheren
Schulen in den USA zu kurz, oft gibt es nur
ein eingeschränktes oder gar kein Angebot.
„Die Sprache ist eine Herausforderung
beim Deutsch-Studium“, sagt Claudia
Bornholdt. Sie ist froh, dass nicht zuletzt
wegen der Campuswochen die Zahl der
Interessierten steigt: „Die Studenten, die
sich an das Deutschstudium heranwagen,
wissen um den Stellenwert von Deutsch
in der Zukunft.“
Die Situation an vielen amerikanischen
Schulen wird auch an der Brown Universität
ernst genommen. Zusammen mit ihren
Studenten hat Jane Sokolosky im Rahmen
der aktuellen Kampagne des GIC wieder
ein sogenanntes High School Outreach
organisiert. Im Oktober letzten Jahres
führten Studenten der Deutschfakultät die
jungen Besucher auf dem Campus herum,
veranstalteten mit ihnen eine traditionelle
Schnitzeljagd und beantworteten ihre
Fragen. „Deutsch wird als Sprache immer
wichtiger“, sagt Cassandra Carothers,
die als Studentin den Deutsch-Club der
Brown Universität leitet, „etwa für das
Studium, Praktika und die Karriere.” Das
Engagement der Studenten zahlt sich aus:
In den letzten Jahren stieg der Anteil der
Studenten mit Deutsch im Hauptfach
deutlich - allein 2013 um 20 Prozent. Und
immer häufiger entscheiden sich Studenten
im späteren Verlauf ihres Studiums für ein
Auslandssemester in Deutschland.
„Deutschlands Gewicht nimmt zu“, stellt
Claudia Bornholdt fest, „Unsere Studenten
wählen gezielt deutschlandbezogene
Themen für ihre Abschlussarbeit“.
Traditionelle Stereotypen gehören der
Vergangenheit an, die Studenten haben ein
modernes Deutschland vor Augen. Daran
hat auch die vertiefte Auseinandersetzung
mit Deutschlands Rolle in Europa ihren
guten Anteil. Deutschland wird als treibende
Kraft bei der Bewältigung der Schuldenkrise
gesehen, gilt als Stimme der kleineren EUMitgliedsstaaten und steht als Ideen- und
Impulsgeber für eine vertiefte europäische
Integration.

Cornelius Schnauber

USC Dornsife Emeritus Associate
Professor of German Cornelius Schnauber,
an eminent and highly decorated scholar,
historian, playwright, novelist and pianist
who taught at USC Dornsife since 1968,
has died. He was 74.
Schnauber died peacefully in Los Angeles
Feb. 21, surrounded by family and close
friends after suffering a heart attack two
weeks ago.
“We all gathered around him and sang
German and Austrian songs and reminisced
about our times traveling together in Germany
and Switzerland,” recalled Schnauber’s
daughter Christina Linhardt. “It was
very beautiful.”
In addition to teaching German literature
at USC Dornsife from 1968 to 2006 and
chairing the German department from 1975
to 1984, Schnauber founded the USC-Max
Kade Institute for Austrian-German-Swiss
Studies in 1984 and served as its director
until 2011. He was a prolific writer who
published dozens of books, plays, biographies
and scholarly articles.
“Cornelius Schnauber will be remembered
as a tireless advocate of German-Jewish
reconciliation and a pioneering scholar of
the German-speaking exile community in
Southern California,” said Paul Lerner, USCMax Kade Institute director and associate
professor of history at USC Dornsife. “He
leaves behind an enormous legacy of literary,
theatrical, musical and scholarly achievement.
He will be sorely missed.”
Schnauber was born April 18, 1939
in Freital, on the outskirts of Dresden,
Germany. He was 5 when Allied forces
bombed Dresden at the end of World War
II, a trauma he claimed he would never
forget. Growing up in Nazi and then postwar
Germany affected Schnauber deeply, Lerner
said. Schnauber’s father was among the first
Nazis, working in an administrative role
governing a small town in Italy and later
for the Nazi Red Cross during the war.
Disturbed by this knowledge, Schnauber
devoted his life to building German-Jewish
relations.
“Cornelius felt a responsibility for
German atrocities, even though he was only
a small child then, which eventually led to
his creation of the German-Jewish dialogues
at the Kade Institute,” Lerner said.
Escaping then-East Germany twice during
the 1960s, Schnauber earned his doctorate
at the University of Hamburg, where he
studied German literature, phonetics and
political science. It was here he met his future
wife Judith Docter, an American student
from Stanford University studying abroad
in Germany.
A personal friend of many famous
German-speaking émigrés in L.A. —
including actors, writers, artists and
musicians — Schnauber’s goal was to bring
together newcomers from Germany with
authors and composers from Germanspeaking countries.
“Dr. Schnauber knew everyone in the
German-speaking exile community, Billy
Wilder, Fritz Lang, Fred Zinnemann, and
Eric Zeisl,” Lerner said.“He had great stories
about driving around L.A. with Helmut
Kohl and Angela Merkel, hanging out with
Fritz Lang and interviewing Albert Speer
in Frankfurt.”
Schnauber was also involved with music,
and in 1992 began serving as the German
diction coach of the Los Angeles Opera.
He wrote a biography about opera singer
Placido Domingo, a personal friend.
Schnauber received many honors
throughout his career including the Officer’s
Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal
Republic of Germany — awarded by the
President of Germany — in 2002.
In 2003, he was honored with the
“Resolution Cornelius Schnauber” from
the Los Angeles City Council for his
contributions to the understanding of the
cultural heritage of the City of Los Angeles
and the longstanding history of friendship
between Berlin and L.A. In addition to
Linhardt, Schnauber is survived by his exwife, Judith Docter; son Tom Schnauber;
and grandchildren Johannes, Anneke and
Mathias Schnauber.
A tribute event for Schnauber took place
at the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles on
March 11. ¦

GAMGA Gala 2014
German Karneval in Las Vegas

F
or the 29th time, members of the
Ger man-Amer ican Mardi Gras
Association (GAMGA) flocked to Las
Vegas in mid-January in order to celebrate
their annual GAMGA Gala.This year, more
than 1,000 Karneval fans from all over the
United States and Canada came together and
enjoyed a colorful entertainment program
of German Karneval dance music and
performances. Many of them celebrated
important anniversaries of their own
Karneval clubs: 50 years for KG Rheinischer
Verein Grün Weiss Milwaukee, Milwaukee
Spielmannszug, KG Rot Weiss German Club
of Central Florida and First GK Germania
Cincinnati; 25 years for Narren von Neu
Ulm; 22 years for Spielmannszug Minnesota;
20 years for Las Vegas Vagabonds; and 10
years for the German-American Karneval
Society of Arizona.
This year’s season was presided over
by the royal GAMGA couple known as
“Seine Tollität” Prince Mike I. and “Ihre
Lieblichkeit” Princess Rosie I. from Arizona.
A special guest was Petra Schuermann, the
recently appointed Executive Director of
the German-American Heritage Museum
of the U.S.A., who revealed the plans for
the museum’s upcoming exhibit “German
Karneval – Then & Now,” to be shown in
Washington, D.C. The GAMGA members
spontaneously promised to help, by loaning
valuable costumes and memorabilia for the
exhibit.
Three original Karneval medals donated
by “Festkomité Kölner Karneval von 1823”
were raffled off at the GAMGA gala in order
to raise additional funds for the exhibit.
The winners were Spaulding Goetze,
Hans Klindt and Paul Gunnemann. Carole
Brennan, president of the LA Turners, won
the “GAMGA Orden 2014.”
Throughout this fun-filled weekend,
people danced to the tunes of the “Bluebirds”
and DJ Juergen Picard. A big hit was the
new official GAMGA song composed
by Alexander Hast with lyrics by Georg
Breitling. ¦

Exhibit Opening of
at the German-American Heritage Museum of
the USA™ in Washington DC

“German Karneval - Then and Now”
is the latest exhibit to make its debut at the
German-American Heritage Museum of
the USA™ (GAHM) in Washington, DC.
This new exhibit was unveiled on Thursday,
February 27th with many guests from the
DC area in attendance.
The purpose of the exhibit is to educate
the public about the history of German
Karneval – its origins and how its traditions
are preserved and celebrated still today in
large parts of Germany, and North America.
Part of the exhibit is a chronological
display and takes you back to Karneval’s
early beginnings, shedding light on how
Karneval was shaped by Ancient Rome and
early Catholic Church.
The exhibit is also designed to answer
many of Karneval’s mysteries – the fascination
with the number 11, decorations, parades,
and uniforms, and why the “Jungfrau” of a
“Dreigestirn” can never be a virgin.
The showcase tells of the regional
differences in how the holiday is celebrated
in Köln, Düsseldorf, Mainz, and in BadenWürttemberg – explaining the differences
between Fasching, Fastnacht, Fasnet, and
Karneval.

the members of the German-American
Mardi Gras Association (GAMGA), Karin
Gottier, a private collector of German
folk art in Connecticut, Heinz Mueller
from Glendale, California, the Festkomité
Kölner Karneval von 1823, and the Cologne
Karneval Museum, the German-American
Heritage Museum of the USA™ is happy
to be able to show a variety of traditional
Karneval Prince and Princess costumes, the
uniforms of a full “Dreigestirn”, the typical
Lappenclown costume from Cologne, a
“Funkenmariechen” (majorette) outfit,
vintage Karneval hats (Gesellschaftsmützen)
from Cologne, and numerous Karneval
decorations (Karnevalsorden) as well as
elaborately hand-carved masks, artefacts, and
costumes of the Aleman-Swabian Karneval
from Germany’s South-Western region.
“For this exhibit,” Petra Schuermann,
Executive Director of the German-American
Heritage Museum and curator of this exhibit,
explains, “fans of German Karneval from all
parts of the United States have helped to
show a very diverse collection of German
Karneval regalia. GAMGA and its 17 member
clubs in the US were instrumental in reaching
out to people who care about preserving the
traditions of German Karneval.We received
valuable costumes, hats, and hand-carved
masks on loan from German-Americans
in California, Connecticut, Colorado,
Arkansas, Nevada, and even Canada. In
Germany, Claudia Teichner of the Koelner
Karnevalsmuseum was very supportive and
made a beautiful collection of 6 valuable
vintage Karneval hats from Germany available
to us, and gifted lots of other items to our
museum.”
The exhibit will travel to other regions in
the US after closing in Washington D.C. on
April 30, 2014. The first stop will be at the
T.E.V. Edelweiss Club in Denver, Colorado,
one of the GAMGA member associations
that generously loaned several exhibit items
to the museum.The exhibit will finally travel
to Las Vegas, Nevada, to be put on display at
the 30th Anniversary Gala of GAMGA on
January 17, 2015.
The exhibit is sponsored by Condor
German Airlines, Underberg Sales Group,
Festkomitee Koelner Karneval von 1823 e.V.,
and Koelner Karnevalsmuseum. Opening
night was additionally sponsored by Asbach
Uralt, Gaffel Koelsch, and Goetze Candy.
