Focused side-seminar on Defining and Measuring Severity

Motivation:
It is a continued challenge in the routine situation to assess severity as part of the patient treatment for
minor and major trauma. Not only is severity a multifaceted entity entailing aspects of timeframe (“threat
to life”, “long term threat to quality of life”, “sustainability of life situation before trauma”), but also
difficult to quantify. How should we assess severity in a given setting ?
The side seminar and related parts of the main seminar will be in English.
Questions are:
a. Where are we in turn of defining severity on a routine basis
b. Is there a route in following the ICISS path of diagnosis based definition of severity.
c. How can one secure nationwide validity and reproducibility of AIS coding
e.g. can we accept coding done away from each department
d. Can we simplify coding of AIS to e.g. AIS 3+ yes/no
The expected outcome of the side-seminar is a suggested framework/policy for the coming 5 years:
1. Which type of severity grading would we suggest to implement for hospitals in Denmark.
- E.g. a levelled model:
a. AIS coding and ISS on all level 1 centres
b. Coding to AIS3+ on all other hospitals
c. Coding to AIS3+ on all other hospitals on the basis of automatic diagnosis conversion
2. Do we see a place for use of ICISS based coding.
3. Which model for implementation should we use to ensure validity and reproducibility of coding of severity
within countries and within the region.
Discussions will start during the formally allocated time and continue in smaller groups during
breaks. Formally allocated times are:
