Know Your Doors
Identify the kind of door for each written description. Write the door type for each diagram
or sketch of a door. Your selections are from these major types of doors:
• Sectional, standard lift door
• Sectional, high lift door
• Sectional, vertical lift door
• Rolling door
• Grille
• Sliding door
• Curtain
• Bi-parting door
Description #1
The door is made from a sheet of metal that is molded for flexibility. As it opens it rolls up
and as it closes it unwinds from the roll.
Door Type
Description #2
Doors like this are lifted vertically. Their travel above the level of the door angles slightly
backwards. They are made from wide sections. Rollers at the edges of the sections travel in a
track.
Door Type
Description #3
These doors are very often found in apartment buildings and residences but are also common
in commercial settings. As they open, they are lifted overhead in a horizontal position.
Door Type
Description #4
Barns are known to have this kind of door. They are not common in current commercial
settings. Typically they consist of one or two large sections and travel on a track from side to
side.

Commercial Door Operator Training
Description #5
Several hinged sections are joined together to make this door. It travels vertically as it is
lifted but, toward the top of its travel, it bends to travel in a nearly horizontal position. It can
only be installed in buildings having ceilings that are relatively high.
Door Type
Description #6
Narrow slats are joined together in a hinged fashion to construct this kind of door. The
narrow slats allow it to be rolled, as it opens, onto a kind of tube. The slats, and thus the
entire door, are held in place and travel within guides.

Door Hardware and Functionality
In this activity you will have opportunity to think about door types and the hardware from
which they are constructed. You are to complete your learning and demonstrate your
knowledge of door hardware and functionality by completing the three sections of this
activity.
Match Door Types with Hardware
What hardware is typically needed to make a sectional, lift door?
A rolling door? Indicate the
kind of door having the hardware on the left by checking the appropriate box. Some
hardware is found on both.

Match Functional Descriptions with Hardware
For each hardware item listed on the right, match it with its functional description on the
left. Write the number of the description in the space provided.
Functional Description
1. Allows bending of door sections and
holds sections together.
2. Covers barrel and associated parts so
that they are protected from dirt and
dust and hidden from view.
3. Holds the door in place and provides
confined travel as it is opened and
closed.
4. Provides a bumper at end of door travel
and stores energy to assist door closer.
5. Provides a confined path for door travel
through vertical, curved, and/or
horizontal positions.
6. Provides a surface for winding the
curtain as door is opened and closed.
7. Provides rigidity to the bottom of the
door and gives a surface for lock
mounting.
8. Stores potential energy (torque) to lift
the door and counter balances the
weight of the door as it is opened and
closed..
9. Together with the torsion spring
balances the weight of the door
throughout its travel.
10. Transfers energy from the door
operator or manually to the
counterbalance shaft.
11. Transfers tension from the torsion
springs to the bottom of the door
making it easier to lift the door.
12. Travels within a track providing
reduced friction between metal parts.
13. User manually pushes the door closed
by pushing with foot on this part.

Materials and Operator Selection
Further, and demonstrate, your understanding of the significance of door materials by
completing this activity.
Materials and Relative Weight
Rate the relative weight of the sectional lift doors below. Assume all have the same area. Use
a scale from 1 to 5 where 1 is the lightest and 5 the heaviest. Base your numbering on the
Maximum Door Area chart on page 27 of your participant’s guide.

Applications of Lift-Master Products
Read the scenario and then select the operator that best meets the application. Use your LiftMaster Commercial Door Operator Products Catalog. Supply all requested information as
necessary.
Scenario #1
XYZ Trucking Company is ordering operators for its new warehouse. The 16 gauge,
insulated, vertical lift, sectional doors for each dock are 14 feet high and 12 feet wide.
Activity at each door is expected to be heavy and operators must be rated for continuous
duty. Maintenance on the doors and operators is critical and the customer has requested a
means for knowing the number of cycles on each door. Electrical power available for the
operators is 460 volts. The customer wants an operator that will handle the job, is high
quality, and costs less than $700.

In general your mind is made up regarding the operator you want. You’re still willing to

Role Play Setting #1 – Information for the Customer
You are anticipating your first sales call from a Lift-Master sales person. You’ve been
looking through the Lift-Master Commercial Door Operator Products Catalog that was sent
to you earlier. You’ve selected the Model H as one that will meet your needs at the price you
are willing to pay. You’re also looking at a competitor’s operator and like one of the models
in their catalog.
Your doors are 425 square foot 20 gauge steel and your building has 208/230V, 3 phase
electrical power. You’ve looked at the control circuit options and believe the M option is the
one you want. You know that the doors will be opened and closed many times during the day

as far as you are concerned. You’ve been talking with the Lift-Master sales person but
you’ve also been talking with a competitor’s sales person.

Role Play Instructions for the Observer
You’re role is to observe the role play and evaluate how well the sales person addresses the
objections that are made and how well he/she presents the features and benefits of the
product(s) they are trying to sell. When therole play is over, present your observations to the
sales person. You are going to have to rely on you own knowledge of features and benefits so
do a little preparation for your role as observer.
How well did the sales person address objections?
What could have been done better and what features and benefits were not presented that
might have been?
What seemed to be the needs of the customer?
What features and benefits did the salesperson bring up to make his/her case?
