USA Cycling member supports World Bicycle Relief
“Allsevens” group hopes to raise over $10,000 for Zambia program It won’t be anything like a mountain bike ride in his native St. Louis, but that doesn’t seem to stop USA Cycling member Mark Neuman.“I think it’s the least I could do,” he said. “Here we have the luxury of driving. In Africa, we can give people more freedom, more choice and better efficiency to travel and carry more with a bicycle.” Mark prepares for the “allsevens” at the Greensfelder Grind race in Allentown, Mo. His mountain bike background will serve him well in tackling more than 100 miles per day for 7 days across 7 countries. Right: Bert Berla, Mark Neuman, and Nigel Taylor, all of St. Louis, seek to raise enough contributions to purchase 1,000 bicycles for HIV/AIDS careworkers in Zambia, Africa through World Bicycle Relief. Neu‐
man and three friends are doing the ride to support World Bicycle Relief, a charity that provides bicycles to HIV/AIDS careworkers in Africa. “We wanted this ride to be about something,” he said. “It really hit me strongly when I went to the World Bicycle Relief web site and saw the power of the bicycle. It really touched a nerve in me.” That connection to the bicycle has even led Neuman to earn his certifica‐
tion in bicycle maintenance, and he founded Vector Cycle five years ago as a business to help maintain his friends’ bikes. That is how the connec‐
tion happened between allsevens and World Bicycle Relief: one of Neu‐
man’s riding partners suggested the ride, and Neuman saw an article about World Bicycle Relief in an industry publication. The organization was founded two years ago by SRAM Corporation and TREK Bicycles in response to the devastating Tsunami in the Indian Ocean. USA Cycling welcomes aboard two new hires
Dieter Drake has recently been selected to fill the role of Northeast Road and Track Regional Coordinator, and Jess Schwartzkopf was named to the newly created position of Director of Sponsorship and Business Development. JESS SCHWARTZKOPF Director of Sponsorship and Business Development DIETER DRAKE Northeast Road and Track Regional Coordinator Schwartzkopf comes to USA Cycling from EchoStar Satellite L.L.C., (DISH Network) where he has worked as marketing manager since April of 2004. While there, he executed several initiatives within its marketing communications, product marketing, and national account sales and marketing divisions. Recently, he assisted in the development of a multi‐
million dollar sponsorship package of Roush Fenway Racing, a competi‐
tor on NASCAR’s Nextel Cup and Busch racing series. Drake comes to USA Cycling with extensive experience in cycling race promotion and organization, and his knowledge of the sport made him the perfect choice to fill this role. As Director of Sponsorship and Business Development at USA Cycling, Schwartzkopf’s primary responsibility will be to build a revenue stream to better enable the organization to achieve its strategic marketing and sales objectives. His main goal is to develop substantial sponsor, supplier and affinity partner relationships within the business community, lead USA Cycling’s effort to execute all necessary research, due diligence, business development plans, negotiations and agreements, and imple‐
ment business development strategies. He’ll also lead the organization’s sponsorship sales and the efforts to develop affinity partnerships with industry partners in the cycling com‐
munity to add further value to USA Cycling’s member benefit package. “The addition of Jess to our staff represents a major step forward in the continuing evolution of USA Cycling and our business development goals,” stated USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson. “We are putting a great deal of emphasis on creating partnerships in the cycling industry and providing greater value for our members.” Over the last few years Drake has served as the club director of Farm Team Cycling of Cambridge, N.Y. and a race promoter and interim local association director, organizing some of the area’s largest pro/am races— like the recently contested Battenkill Roubaix. As a business owner and entrepreneur, he also has extensive experience outside of the cycling realm with proven marketing and sales success. In his role with USA Cycling, Drake’s primary responsibilities will be to maintain relationships and communication with local promoters, clubs, associations and members within his assigned region. “Dieter has been involved in all facets of racing, from budget manage‐
ment to writing training schedules and business plan development to volunteer coordination,” said Theresa Delp, USA Cycling’s Vice‐
President of Membership. “His wide variety of experience in the cycling world helped him stand out from a very talented pool of applicants.” He’s also seen cycling success as the top masters time trialist in the coun‐
try in 2004, and the 2003 and 2004 New York State Time Trial Champion.
“I am looking forward to not only helping grow the sport in the North‐
east region, but to educating and informing others on how better to work together to advance the sport of cycling even further,” he said. Buy the AMGEN Tour of California poster online
