Introduction
The Investigational Drugs database (IDdb) has been developed to provide comprehensive information about all aspects of
drug development worldwide, from first patent application to eventual launch or discontinuation. IDdb3 Release 2, launched
in February 2002, is the most recent and advanced version of the database, with an improved design and enhanced
functionality. Updated on a daily basis, IDdb3 provides timely and up-to-date pharmaceutical R&D information which can be
filtered by topics and criteria relevant to you. Several new alerting features enable you to create and receive email alerts
about specific changes in the database, making it even easier to monitor the database for new information in your field.
Database Content
The information in IDdb3 is presented in the following main report types:
•
•
•
•
•
Alerts
Drug Reports (with associated Reference Reports)
Patent Reports
Company Reports
Meeting reports
The data in these reports is continuously collected from a diverse range of sources including patents, meetings, scientific
and commercial literature, news services and direct company communications. Hypertext links between these reports fully
integrate the information.
Daily Updates
Each day, 30-60 pharmaceutical news stories are selected for significance by experienced editors and added to the
database as IDdb3 Alerts. This together with the continuous updating of Drug and Company Reports, provides users with
current information about a drug's development, licensing and marketing status. New reports are added at the
approximate rate of 150 new patents, 20-50 new drugs, 5-20 new start-up companies and 10-20 new meeting reports per
week.
Commissioned Intelligence
Over 2000 international subject specialists, from industry and academia, are commissioned to continually interpret, review
and evaluate the gathered information for scientific and commercial interest. This intelligence is available in the form of
literature evaluations, expert opinions, authoritative reviews and meeting reports. The IDdb Advisory Board oversees this
process of upgrading data to intelligence.
IDdb3 Source Material
News Services and Commercial Sources
Commercial information sources are scanned routinely for news of company and drug developments, including:
•
•
•
•
Newswires
Specialist industry newsletters and publications
Analyst reports
Company and industry online databases
Scientific Meetings
Some 350-400 scientific meetings are covered each year by a unique commissioning system. Scientists who are attending
meetings are commissioned to write a report to highlight the key presentations and poster sessions and to provide an
overview of the meeting. The most significant meetings are also attended by IDdb editors and reports from such meetings
will be posted in IDdb3 "Overnight". In addition to these reports, the conference proceedings are also scanned for new
drug data.
Scientific Literature
Over 5500 individual journals are scanned, primarily through searching of scientific abstracting databases such as Medline
(PubMed), EMBASE Alert, BIOSIS and Derwent Drug File.
3
Therapeutic Patents
Therapeutic patents filed through the five major patent authorities; the World (PCT), European, US, Japanese and United
Kingdom patent offices, are selected for abstracting and inclusion in IDdb3 using the following criteria:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Novel compounds claiming potential therapeutic use
Diagnostics claiming potential therapeutic indications
Known compounds claiming novel therapeutics indications
Novel formulations for named drugs
Novel preparation processes of therapeutic compounds or intermediates
Novel biotechnology methods and discoveries
Where possible a sample chemical structure is drawn. The following three levels of criteria are used to select the sample
structures:
•
•
•
A specifically claimed compound, with due regard to biological potency
A specifically claimed compound
A compound exemplified by synthesis, with due regard to scope of the generic claim.
In addition, since October 1996, generic structures have been included where applicable.
Company Communications
Frequent direct contact is made with companies by IDdb editors to validate information and product portfolios. Press
releases, company websites, annual reports, company brochures and interviews are all scanned regularly for new data.
4
Logging into IDdb3
The IDdb3 internet site is located at:
http://www.iddb3.com
The system requires a unique username and password for each user. This ensures full utilization of the database's
personalization features. To obtain a username and password, please contact your internal IDdb3 administrator; if you are
unsure of this contact, email mailto:[email protected] for assistance.
Customers accessing IDdb3 via their company's Intranet, should consult their Intranet administrator or IDdb3 contact for
registration and login instructions, or email mailto:[email protected] for assistance.
Remember Password Option
The login page includes a "Remember password" option which can be activated by checking the box. This will set a
permanent cookie which means that in the future:

Personal Alerts
You can choose to personalize the Alerts service by filtering the news to only receive Alerts on specific topics relevant to
you. These Personal Alerts will be displayed in the database; however, you also have the option to receive notice of new
Personal Alerts by email.
Creating Personal Alerts
To set up Personal Alerts, click on the CREATE button.
Personal Alert profiles can be formed
from a combination of topics, index terms
and/or free text.
Topics broadly categorize the content of
Alerts. Each Alert is assigned one or
more topics.
Use the list of topics to select terms to
define your Alert profile.
The Actions, Indications and
Technologies terms are chosen from
indexes presented as a hierarchy.
When you choose a broad index term,
you will automatically retrieve stories
classified by any narrower term; eg,
selecting the indication term “Respiratory
disease” will also retrieve items about
drugs indexed for narrower terms, such
as asthma.
If you would prefer NOT to include these narrower terms in your search, click on Personal in the left-hand navigation bar,
choose Preferences and Search and indicate that you would not like cumulative counts in your searches by deselecting
the boxes for the indexing terms as desired. See more about Personal Preferences on page 38.
Clicking on this node located next to a broad index term will expand out the hierarchy to allow selection of more
specific index terms. Alternatively you can search for index terms by entering a term in the Look up box and clicking
on LOOK UP. Clicking on the term you want will add it to the Personal Alerts Profile Builder.
The COMPANIES and DRUG NAMES options can be used to look up company and drug names to add to the Personal
Alert Profile Builder. Enter a name in the Look up box and click on LOOK UP. This will bring up a list of companies or
drugs containing the name entered, click on your chosen name to add it to the Alert profile.
NB: When entering terms in the Look up boxes you do not need to type in the complete word nor use the truncation
symbol. Look up will automatically expand the search to include any further characters that may be found after or before
the root of the word. Eg, typing in pyscho in "Look up an indication" will automatically retrieve Pyschomotor disorder,
Pyschosis, Paranoid psychosis and Psychosexual disorder.
The Alert Topics index can be used to choose which type of news story you are interested in. The Topics that are used
broadly categorize the content of Alerts and each Alert is assigned one or more topics.

IDdb3 Reports
Information within IDdb3 is presented in a series of integrated reports, each connected by numerous links for ease of use
and navigation.
Drug Reports
A Drug Report provides a complete picture of a single investigational drug. It details the drug’s commercial development,
development status and licensing position, and provides chemical, biological, pharmacological and clinical data.
The very first table shown in a Drug Report will give information on:
• The company which originated the drug plus a hypertext link to the Company Report (NB: this is not always
necessarily the company which is actively developing the drug)
• The highest stage of development that the drug has reached
• Indications for which the drug has been indexed
• Actions (pharmacological mechanism of action) for which the drug has been indexed
• Technologies for which the drug has been indexed
Listed directly beneath this table will be the date of when the report was last updated and the reason why. Reasons
include:
• Development Status Updated
• Chemical Structure Added/Updated
• Reference Added
• Literature Evaluation Added
• Indexing Updated
• Licensing Information Updated
• Minor Editorial Amendment

text with none of the navigation bars or gifs from the browser view.
Add to Library
Clicking on Add to Library adds the Drug Report to your own personal Library, so that in future instead of having to
search for the report, you can simply locate and retrieve it from Library (a submenu of Personal). For more information on
this, see the Personal section on page 38.
Summary
Each Drug Report contains a Summary, which is a plotted history of the drug's development. It will contain information on
development status, indications for which the drug is being developed for, the companies involved in its development,
clinical trial data, preclinical data, analysts estimates and predictions and so forth. Throughout the Summary are links to
the references from which the information was derived - references are represented by numbers contained within square
brackets, eg [345678].
14
Development Status
The Development Status table groups the activity of the drug by company. At a quick glance you can see which company
is developing the drug, at what stage of development, for which indication and where in the world it is being developed.
The development record can be from a publication, company website, company brochure, annual report, company
prospectus, internet site, press release, company communication. If the development record if from any other source the
confidence level will be listed as "Not Evaluated", otherwise, the confidence level will be based on the following rules:
High Confidence = the status shown was announced within the last 6 months. If the status is Withdrawn, Discontinued,
Suspended or Launched the confidence level with be High;
Medium Confidence = the status shown was announced within the last 6-18 months;
Low Confidence = the status shown was announced over 18 months ago.
Licensing
All licensing and collaboration agreements related to the drug are summarized within the Licensing section of the Drug
Report.
Chemistry
A chemical structure for the drug, if known, will be displayed in the Chemistry section of the Drug Report. Structures are
assigned confidence levels as a measure of validity based on the following criteria:
•
•
•
•
•
Level 1 - Confirmed by the company or Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) as correct structure
Level 2 - Structure identified in 2 or more individual peer reviewed journals
Level 3 - Structure identified in peer reviewed journal
Level 4 - Structure identified in a non-peer reviewed printed source
Level 5 - Hand-drawn (from a meetings poster) or sample patent structure
Chemical structures are stored in IDdb3 as MOLfiles and Gifs. In which format the structure will display in the Chemistry
section of a Drug Report depends on your personal settings (see Personal on page 38). By default, structures will display
as Gifs, with a link to VIEW MOLFILE.
15
A Gif is simply a picture of the structure, whereas a MOLfile is a chemically meaningful file which can be copied into a
chemical drawing package such as ISIS Draw and ChemDraw. (The MOLfile is also what is searched for during a substructure search). See page 30 for information on the plug-in required to view MOLfiles.
Compound names associated with a drug
This section of a Drug Report lists all known names associated with a drug. These may be research codes, generic
names, trade names and CAS registry numbers. All the names associated with a drug are linked, so that when searching
for a particular drug, you can search for any one of the names and the same Drug Report will be retrieved.
Literature Evaluations
Literature Evaluations are written for drugs that are in active development. They are a review of the available literature and
act as an expert guide to the published information and personal communications on the drug, highlighting references of
particular scientific or commercial interest.
Evaluations are essentially mini-reviews which provide unique insight into the commercial potential of a drug, its
therapeutic and economic viability. They are written by commissioned experts (industrial and academic scientists) within a
relevant field and may also be subject to peer review.
16

Displaying & Sorting Reference Reports
When you click on the REFERENCES link within a Drug/Company Report, the first screen that will display is the Drug
Bibliography, a list of all the references associated with the drug/company. It gives the total number of references
associated, and from here there are a number of ways in which they can be displayed.
Individual references can be viewed by simply clicking on the title of the reference.
To view and sort multiple references, first check the boxes of the references that are of interest to you (by default ALL the
check boxes are selected). Then click on CUSTOMISE DISPLAY
1) Under Sort by, use the radio buttons to select how
you want to sort the references: by Reference
number; First author; Date added; or, Type.
2) Under Display in, choose whether you want your
references displayed in a Browser view or Printer
friendly view.
3) Decide if you would like your references displayed
as: List View; Full reports - concatenated; or, Full
report - individual.
4) Finally, click on SHOW to display your references
From the Customise Display window you can select the number of results per page by changing the drop-down menu (20,
50 or 100). By checking the box "For a drug/company bibliography, show all" over-rides any previous selection of
references and will display the entire bibliography of references instead (ie, ALL references associated with the
drug/company, not just the ones you checked on the previous screen).

Searching & Browsing - An Introduction
There are six ways to search and browse information within IDdb3 - each method is specifically tailored to help you find
particular reports.
QuickSearch: easy and quick way to locate a specific drug, company or patent report. Can also be used to find
references written by a certain author and finally to conduct a free text word or phrase search across the entire database
(including portal databases). Wild card % truncation is supported in QuickSearch.
Browse Database: allows you to browse through the most recent drug, company, patent and meeting reports added to
the database.
Browse Indexes: a way of browsing through the indexing terms used within IDdb3 (Actions, Indications and
Technologies) and to display the drugs and patents that are indexed by a particular term of interest.
Text Search: a free text word or phrase search to find information across the entire database, or within specific reports.
Wild card % truncation is supported in Text Search.
Guided Search: a simple, pre-defined search used to find specific information that’s been recently added or changed in
IDdb3 within the last day, last 7 days or last 30 days.
Advanced Search: enables you to create very specific searches across Drug and Patent reports by combining the
indexing terms (Actions, Indications & Technologies), company names, development status, drug names, chemical
structures, word/phrase and countries/regions. Also, available within Advanced Search is the ability to "Write Your Own"
boolean queries to search across the entire database.
All searches created in Advanced Search can be saved for future use, or set to be re-run automatically on a daily, weekly
or monthly basis, with the results sent straight to your email.
Wild cards - truncation symbols
The wild card symbol, %, may be used to extend a search to words where the precise spelling is not known, to include the
singular or plural forms of words and to include all words with a common root. Wild card truncation can be used at the end
of a string of characters (ie, right-hand truncation), and also in the middle. Left-hand truncation is not supported within
IDdb3.
Examples:
Searching for immunomodulat%
finds:
immunomodulator, immunomodulators, immunomodulatory etc.
Searching for a%statin
finds:
atorvastatin, antistatin, angiostatin.
Wild cards can be used in QuickSearch, Text Search and in any text Search box within the database.
23
Searching & Browsing - QuickSearch
QuickSearch
QuickSearch is located at the top of the left-hand navigation bar.
•
To find a specific drug report, type in the drug name and make sure the drop-down menu is set to Drug, then click on
TIPS: You can search for a drug using either the research code, generic name or trade name, as drug names and all
their synonyms are mapped within the database.
The database ignores hyphenation, so when searching for a research code, eg MDL-203005, you can search for
either:
MDL-203005
MDL203005
MDL 203005
•
To find a specific company report, type in the company name, change the drop-down menu to Company, then click
on
•
To find a specific patent report, type in the patent number, change the drop-down menu to Patent, then click on
TIPS: Patent numbers appear in IDdb3 in a standard format, which comprises a two-letter country code, followed by a
hyphen, followed by an eight-digit number. Leading zeros are added to the number as necessary to give eight digits,
eg, WO-09945926
However, you can search patent numbers in QuickSearch with or without the hyphen, and you can also omit the twoletter country code:
WO-09945926
WO09945926
09945926
•
To find references written by a specific author, type in the author's name, change the drop-down menu to Author,
then click on
TIPS: When searching for author names in QuickSearch, you will be searching any IDdb3 reference, ie, references
associated to a Drug report, Company Report, as well as searching Alerts and Meeting Reports. QuickSearch for
authors; however, does not search the Portal databases (eg, PubMed, Current Opinion journals etc)

Searching & Browsing – Browse Database
Browse Database
Browse Database can be used to find reports recently added to the database across four categories; Drugs, Companies,
Meetings and Patents. For Drugs, Companies and Meetings you can browse those reports which have been added within
the last 7 days. The Patents category incorporates Patent fast-alert and hence is updated upon publication (Patent fastalert is available as a stand-alone product and is published on a weekly basis).
Browse Database can also be used to look up any Drug/Company/Patent/Meeting report within IDdb3.
In each section of Browse Database there is a text Search box which can be used to search for a word or phrase in that
particular category of Reports (ie, Search Drugs, ONLY searches across the Drug Reports). Click on the radio button to
choose whether to search all the reports in the database, or just just those in the latest update. The truncation % is
supported in these Search boxes, but not Boolean operators.
Finally, Browse Database provides an alternative place to choose the option to receive each day's Alerts by email for each
category (Drugs, Companies, Meetings & Patents). Simply click on the link BY EMAIL

The Patents section of Browse Database is slightly different from the other sections, in that it incorporates Patent fastalert, a weekly published product which is also available as a stand-alone journal/database. Hence this section of Browse
Database shows the latest update, or issue, of that product, providing links to all the most recent Patent Reports added to
the database (All Patent Reports within IDdb3 are generated in conjunction with Patent fast-alert).
25
Instead of providing just a list of the patents, a Table of Contents is displayed, grouping the patents into 6 categories.
Simply click on a category, eg Anti-Infectives, to view all patents in that therapeutic area.
The patents are displayed in a brief summary format, providing details of:
• Patent title
• Patent publication date and patent number

Searching & Browsing – Browse Indexes
Browse Indexes
The Browse Indexes section enables you to browse through the IDdb3 Indexing terms and view the drugs and patents
associated with each term. IDdb3 uses three indexing categories: Actions; Indications; and, Technologies. Each index is
arranged as a hierarchical tree, with the broadest terms listed at the top of a tree and more specific terms lower down in a
tree. Throughout IDdb3, lower-level terms are included by default when you use any higher-level index term in a search.
(This default can be changed in Personal, see page 38 for more information).
To find a term, simply type all or part of an index term in the
box and then click on LOOK UP (truncation is added
automatically)
Alternatively use the + next to a term to expand the tree and
drill down to your chosen term.
Beside each term is listed the number of Drugs and Patents
that are indexed within IDdb3 for that term. Clicking on these
numbers will take you to the corresponding results. Clicking
on the Total number will show you both sets of results (ie,
Drugs and Patents).
27
Searching & Browsing – Text Search & Guided Search
Text Search
Text Search allows quick and easy
searching for free text. You can
search for a word or phrase across
the entire database (including
Portal options) or you can limit the
search to particular report types.
You can also limit the search to
specific fields within the reports,
eg, Title or Abstract.
•
•
•
•
•
Enter a single word or phrase in the text box. Up to five combinations of text may be entered and truncation (%) is
supported. Use the drop-down menu to select the field that you wish to search. The default is Any Field.
Use the radio button to select Any of the above or All of the above words.
Selecting Any is equivalent to searching with a logical OR, so each result will contain at least one of the terms
entered.
Selecting All is equivalent to searching with a logical AND so each result must contain all the terms entered.
Use the check boxes to select which type(s) of IDdb report you wish to search in or alternatively select Any IDdb
report to search across all reports. You can also choose to include IDdb Portal databases in your search, or to search
the Portal on its own.
Use the Date drop-down box to restrict the search to only include data which has been added or updated within the
dates shown, for example last 7 days, 30 days, or 90 days. The default is no date limit.
Finally click SEARCH to initiate the search. All text in the selected sources will be searched for the word(s) entered in
the text box.
Guided Search
Guided Search is used to find specific information
that has been recently added or changed within the
database. Recently is defined as being in the
Latest update (ie, within the last day), within the
Last 7 days, or Last 30 days.
Select a search by checking the appropriate radio
button and select a time period from the drop-down
menu. Click on SEARCH.

automatically include lower level terms. This is the default. If you do not wish to include lower level terms in your search,
uncheck the boxes.
Some of the terms within the IDdb3 Actions, Indications and Technologies indexes have associated synonyms. When
Looking Up a term in an index tree you can find the preferred index term by also entering the synonym.
Checking the Show synonyms boxes will notify you when you have used a synonym.
e.g. If you look up “stroke” in the Indications index, the database will retrieve “Cerebrovascular ischemia is the preferred
term for stroke.”
If the boxes are unchecked you will still retrieve the preferred term by entering a synonym.
When limiting a patent search by date you have the option to use the Added, Updated, Publication or Priority date as the
default search field.
