FROM PAGE B5
Stitzel said that bracing
can be quite damaging to a
patient’s psyche.
“Eighty percent of scoliosis patients are between
12 and 15 years old, a critical time in the development of body image for adolescents. The discomfort
and stigma of wearing a
brace can have a profound
effect on their self-esteem
and how they define themselves and can lead to eating disorders, depression
and other psychological issues,” Stitzel said.
As for surgery, while
Stitzel acknowledged that
it can be effective in treating large curves, he contended it also is highly invasive, extremely
expensive and conducive
to chronic pain or complications down the line.
“Overall, while the efforts of the past were all
done with good intentions,
we needed a better way —
a nonbracing, nonsurgical
solution to address a neurological, three-dimensional spinal deformity,”
he said.
Turning things around
According to Stitzel, the
CLEAR approach “recognizes and treats scoliosis
as a neurological condition
first and a spinal condition
second. Treatment is based
on neuro-muscular rehabilitation — basically, retraining the brain to hold
the spine straighter,” he
said.
“It isn’t new, but rather
