When the owners of a tired 1950s supper club walked into their newly purchased building
and talked about visions of Italy, many were skeptical. Yet less than a year later,
family-owned Sarento’s Italian Restaurant opened its doors to the public with great success.

After in-depth discussion with the client, the project goal crystalized: create a cohesive
design and efficient layout within a quintessential Italian setting. Composed of the original
building and two separate additions, the project required a complete interior and exterior
remodel to unify the structures and theme. In recreating an authentic setting, success is in the
details. From the weathered stucco exterior with tile and shake roofs to the wrought-iron
railings and rounded awnings, each detail speaks Italia.
A beautiful vestibule greets guests with a grand glass and wrought iron interior portal,
building excitement and anticipation for the experience to come. Inside, richly hued woods,
walls and flooring create an intimate and charming environment without being heavy or
dark. Wrought iron accents are repeated. Fireplaces up the ambiance. In one dining room,
murals of an Italian vineyard creates the impression of alfresco dining. In another, the
canals of Venice are featured. A large collection of wines is displayed behind the host
station, while smaller displays showcase wine in other spots.
The kitchen is amply sized with an efficient layout for fast food production, and server
stations and the large bar are designed for prompt guest service.
Design creativity, expert craftsmanship and the guidance of the owner’s vision recreated a
little piece of Italy in the heart of Wisconsin.
