• Too high a price for education
Presenter:
There have been huge protests by university students in South Africa over a
proposal to increase tuition fees.
Some of the country’s top universities even had to close because the
protests became so big.
Black students in South Africa say because their families earn less, the
proposed increase in tuition fees takes away the opportunity for them to
get further education. They say inequality is still a big problem in South
Africa, more than two decades after the end of apartheid in 1994.
Listen to these students speaking to news channel CCTV Africa.
Students:
Education in South Africa has become so expensive.
We cannot afford these fees; it’s just too high for us. We are poor.
As an average black student, me and my future kids and the people who
come after me, are not going to be able to study. So you are denying me my
right to learn.

• Tracking bullying with technology
Presenter:
An app has been launched in UK schools to give students a safe space to tell
teachers if they are being bullied.

In the app, pupils can report incidents of bullying anonymously. But is the
use of technology a good way to stop bullying? Listen to what these children
told the BBC.
Pupils:
It’s a great idea because it can help people in various ways, like with cyber
bullying, physical bullying and indirect bullying.
You might not want to talk to your teachers and parents about it because
you might be a little bit shy. So if you have the app, then you can just write
down what you are feeling and it can give you some great advice.
I think one of the problems is that you might not any type of tablet or
phone.
Presenter:
For pupils that can access the app, it can be used all day, every day, so it’s
not only limited to school hours.

• Ahmed Mohamed meets Obama
Presenter:
Now, we recently reported the story of Ahmed Mohamed. He’s the 14-year
old from Texas who was arrested when he took a clock he invented to his
school. The teacher was worried about the safety of students because she
thought it was a bomb.
Well, after the story hit the headlines, Ahmed received invitations from
world leaders. The biggest of those was probably from the US President,
Barack Obama. Ahmed received an invite to visit the White House on
Twitter.

And now he has. Afterwards, he revealed that he and Obama talked a lot
about science. Listen to what he says.
Ahmed Mohamed:
We were talking about astronomy so I told him how we can help people
power electricity on Mars.
Presenter:
Ahmed even says he thinks what happened to him is a good thing now.
Ahmed:
I would like to say that I’m glad that this happened to me because I get to
spread my word out to the people and tell them that it’s not by the colour of
your skin or by your religion; but it’s by their heart, and you always judge a
person by their heart, not what they look like.

• What’s so spooky?
Presenter:
And finally, it’s meant to be the most spooky night of the year. Halloween,
celebrated on October 31st, is known as the time when ghosts come out at
night.
Well, scientists at NASA really did get a fright recently. They discovered a
huge asteroid headed Earth’s way, just in time for Halloween.
The asteroid was estimated to be 300 to 600 meters wide and travelling at
more than 125,000 kilometres per hour.

Even though scientists say the asteroid came pretty close to earth, it was
still over 500,000 kilometres away – that’s further than the moon.
The scientists give the asteroid a nickname – Spooky.
