Resolving Roommate Conflicts
Whether your roommate is your long-time bestie, closest bro, or a
new acquaintance, chances are you will experience some form of
roommate conflict during UB summer. Here are some helpful tips on
resolving those conflicts.
Communicate!!! Communication is super important when trying to
solve roommate conflicts. If your roommate is doing something that
bothers you, talk about it! Chances are she or he may not even realize
it’s a problem. Ask your roommate to sit down to talk at a time when
you are both calm. Then, clearly communicate to them what is bothering you and why. Don’t beat around the bush – a direct, but respectful, approach is best.
Fight fair. When working out conflicts with your roomie, try to put
aside your desire to “win” the fight. Say what the conflict is from your
view, and ask for the other’s view. Make an attempt to put yourself in
their shoes and see their side of the argument. Avoid yelling, insulting, or bringing up past issues. If the conflict begins to get too
heated, step away and come back to the conversation later. Never
bring other friends into the conflict or put your roommate on blast keep it between the two of you!
GIRLS
Address potential issues before they become issues: Make a roommate agreement! This can be an informal chat while getting settled in
to your dorm, or you could sit down and write out an official
“roommate contract.” Either way, it can be helpful to talk to your
roomie about potential conflicts before they come up. How clean do
you want to keep the dorm room? How do each of you define
“clean”? What is a reasonable time to go to bed at night, and wake up
each morning? How will you share common spaces like closets, counter tops, etc.? Most roommate issues can be solved before they even
become a conflict!
BOYS
.
Every room has:


two beds
two desks (w/internet hook up)
two closets



one sink
one cable outlet
Remember – We are all different, and that’s a good thing! Your
 air conditioning
roommate may have completely different habits, likes, and personaliBoth dorms have community showers. This means that
ty traits than you. Try to embrace your differences, and even learn
everyone on one floor shares a set of showers, which
from them! Remember that you may be able to change a person’s
are at the end of each hall. Bathrooms are maintained
actions, but you can’t change their personality. Try to respect the perby ETSU staff. You should bring something to carry
son your roommate is (even the annoying parts!)
your bathroom toiletries, and you should bring flip flops
for walking to and from the bathroom.
If you can’t work it out on your own… If you’ve tried to talk your issues out but can’t seem to come to an agreement with your roommate, let us help. Talk to an RA, RD, or permanent staff member –
that’s what we’re here for! Sometimes, having a third party to act as a
mediator can really help in resolving a problem.
Remember - having and being a roommate is a new experience for
everyone. Even if you’re an experienced UB student, living arrangements can change year to year. Communicate and help each other
along the way and dorm life can be a wonderful part of UB summer!
Each dorm is equipped with laundry facilities (that cost
per use - $1 to wash, $1 to dry), a kitchen, a community
refrigerator, and vending machines.
Each dorm has a community gathering spot so that students can hang out with each other.
What can a Family Group do for me?
I want to change my
schedule, what do I do?!
After you get your schedule, you will have until May
15th to talk to the UB staff
and fill out a course change
form. Otherwise, you will
be in the classes that are
on your schedules.
Help! What do I do if I lost my ID (or I
don’t have one)?
A: New students have the chance to
have their ID made during the April
27th session for free. However, if you
have already had one made and have
lost it, you will have to pay $12 to
have a new one made.
Be yourself! Upward Bound is a
family and everyone is accepted for
who they are.
Family group participation is a great way to connect with other students and help you to get out of your shell in a relaxed and fun
environment. These groups are formed to give you a small community of peers to relate to while learning about yourself. Your Family
Group leader will present activities that will allow you to work together and challenge one another as a team. You will get a great deal of
encouragement out of the relationships you form in your family group
if you are willing to be an active participant. Our goal for each family
group is to provide a supportive environment where students can help
one another with the struggles of homesickness, stress, peer pressure,
etc. If you experience any of these issues this summer, you will have a
family group to meet with twice a week to provide and excellent way
receive support. In addition to the support that family groups offer,
the entire UB staff is here for you. The best thing about the UB community is that you are never alone!
When will I know who my
roommate is?

Upward Bound Permanent Staff
Nervous About UB Summer?
Ronnie Gross
439-4002
Executive Director
It’s okay to feel homesick during the summer Upward Bound program.
For some of you, this may be your first summer with UB. For others, this may be your
first time away from home. Even returning students may experience homesickness.
Teresa Carver
439-5619
Information Research Technician
Many students are excited for the Upward Bound summer program, but still feel
scared or nervous at times.
Emily Grater
439-6188
Interim Assistant Director of Academic
Services
If you’re feeling homesick, it doesn’t mean you are weird. It just means you might need
to work on some helpful strategies. Try the following during your summer with UB:
Ali Williams
439-4003
Interim Assistant Director of Counseling
Services
Talk to people: RA’s and permanent staff are here to help and listen when you
need to talk with someone. Talk to some older UB students as well.
They’ve been in your shoes.
Tiffany Brown
439-4474
Interim Academic Coordinator
Stay busy: Get involved with activities in your dorm and participate in evening recreation events.
Jessi Nicely
439-5241
Educational Advisor
Don’t isolate yourself: Engaging with other students and staff will keep your mind
off being homesick. Sitting alone and reflecting too much may make it
harder to stay positive and have fun.
Keep in contact: Call, text, or email your family and friends when needed. Parents
can sign you out on Wednesday nights to hang out or go get dinner. Use
your weekends to catch up with friends and family.
Marc Tucker
Counselor
439-5899
Brittany Lewis
Counselor
439-5899
Give it a week: Students who commit to at least one full week of UB summer are
more likely to feel better and be less homesick.
