Introduction to rheology: Shear flow, Stress and deformation tensors, Material functions (e.g.
η, G’(ω), G’’(ω), G(t))
2. 10h15 – 12h00 Lecture room 9B330, Basic mathematics by Mirela Vinerean
Short introduction to vector and tensor operations and to tensor notation used frequently in
description of conventional and complex fluids. Deformation tensors in Cartesian coordinates.

Fundamentals of polymer solutions (diluted solutions and entangled polymers). Principles of
interaction (entanglements, associative and adsorption) Flexible macromolecules, Effect of
branching, effects of excluded volume, determination of molecular weights and molecular
dimensions, radius of gyration.

Elongational flow, deformation tensors in uni-, biaxial and planar elongational flows,
imprortance of elongational flow, experimental methods

Thickeners and soluble polymers used in coating colour (starches, CMC, PVA, ASE, proteins,
gums, etc.). Rheolgical properties of coating colours and their effect on the coating process.
