TOGETHER IN MISSION
CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS &
REMEMBERING CHURCH
How is Holy Family Responding to Together in Mission?
It has been a few months since Cambria made her appeal for T ogether in Mission. So far ,
our parishioners have paid $145,405 the $153,548 pledged. W e have made great strides
toward our goal of $146,862, but still need to raise $1,457 by November . Can you help us
reach our goal? No amount is too small (or too big!). If we exceed our goal, the surplus will
be used to support Holy Family’s ministries.
The 35 parishes and 52 schools that receive funding from this 2013 campaign are depending on the gener osity of those who contribute, in or der to continue pr oviding sacramental,
ministerial, and educational services to those who live in the most financially disadvantaged
areas of the Archdiocese.
If you have not already made a donation, please call Carol Joe at 626-403-6101 to arrange
a contribution. If you have alr eady done so, please accept our thanks and appr eciation for
helping to keep our parishes and schools alive and functioning in God’ s name.

PLANNING YOUR ESTATE
Don’t put off planning your estate…for we know not the day or hour. Good stewardship dictates that we look ahead and make pr ovisions for our family and our chur ch.
s call to give of ourselves.
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Holy Family is indeed a family. We care for each other and reach out to the members of our
family and all others we can help. Part of our outr each has been developing an Emergency
Preparedness Committee to help parishioners pr epare for natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires and storms. Remember, we are told that it is only a matter of time befor e we
have another very large earthquake or other disaster so the very best thing we can do is to
make every effort to be pr epared. Please contact Mar c Ulrich at mar [email protected] if
you have further questions.
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Training Sessions
The Archdiocese has mandated that all adults who work with or
around children in any capacity must know how to recognize and
prevent child sexual abuse by attending a “Pr
otecting God’s
Children” VIRTUS awareness session. All adults ar e encouraged
to attend VIR TUS sessions at Holy Family . Please pre-register by
visiting www.virtus.org and click on “Registration.” If you need
assistance with r egistration, contact Elizabeth Calciano Fagan,
626.437.3865.
Virtus Re-certification
Anyone who attended a V irtus class prior to December 31, 2009 needs to be Recertified. Classes at other parishes may be available. Call the Pastoral Center at

Did You Know? Talk to references when in process of hiring caregiver or choosing daycare
When in the process of hiring a caregiver or daycare facility, start by asking people you know
and trust for a referral. Talk to the caregiver's references, as well as to anyone you know who
has used the caregiver. Ask about the caregiver's competency in creating and maintaining a
safe environment for children. Ask how he or she handled any emergencies that might have
arisen. For more information, visit http://www.virtus.org/virtus/.

LITURGY MATTERS
Session Three part 5
Session 3 part 7
Cardinal Tesserant, president
for the day, announces that
no vote will be taken in this
session of the Council on the
document on religious liberty.
The curialists have taken
advantage of a minor role to
manipulate this postponement in order, they hope, to kill the document. Immediately,
petitions are circulated on the floor of the Council, and nearly 1000 signers call on the
Pope to intervene to stop this move. In the end, however , the Pope allows the minority
to sway him, causing anger, resentment, and hostility. The Pope does promise, however, that this document will be tr eated first in the fourth session.
There is also a move on the same day by the same minority to postpone actions on
the document of ecumenism. To please the curialists, the Pope sends last-minute
changes to this document. Cardinal Bea must write them into the document befor e the
Council can vote on it.
There is a general sense in the Council that time is running out because this was to
have been the third and final session. Much work r emains to be done, however, on
multiple documents, including the important and contr oversial document on the church
in the modern world. The minority has been successful in delaying final action on several items and a sense of gloom is palpable in these final days.
November 20, 1964 a large majority appr oves the declaration on the church’s relation
with non-Christians (Nostra Aetate).
The document on Eastern churches is also approved promulgation the following day.
Likewise the document on ecumenism is appr oved, including 19 out of the 40 lastminute changes ordered by the Pope.
November 21, 1964 the third session is closed by Pope Paul VI, who takes the occasion to proclaim Mary the mother of the chur ch, a move that disappoints the Pr otestant
observers and adds to the general gloomy feeling at the end of the stormy session.
Three documents are promulgated: the church, ecumenism, and Eastern churches.
That there will be a fourth session is also announced.
BIBLE STUDY
We'll be continuing our study of the Book of Isaiah this week. The pr ophet told the people of
Jerusalem to give up their idols and trust in "The Holy One of Israel" 740 years befor e the
birth of Christ. And he tells the people of souther n California to do the same thing 2,700
years later! How did they respond and how will we respond to this message? Let's talk
about it this Wednesday evening at 7:00 in the Galilee Room.

MISSION HAITI
Mission Co-Op Appeal 2013
Each year the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith invites
Catholic mission groups to speak one
Sunday a year at each parish in the
United States. Fr. Tom and Hands
Together, our Haiti Mission, are
assigned 50 plus parishes in the U. S.
Fr. Tom and Doug Campbell do the
bulk of these presentations all over our
wonderful country. However as you
can imagine they cannot possibly
speak personally at all of the assigned
parishes.
Fr. Tom and Doug annually ask Karl Holtsnider and Mary Nally for assistance fr om
Holy Family’s Mission Haiti. This year Karl asked Margo and me if we would be available to speak at St. Rita’s Parish in Fairfax, California. (Fairfax is in Marin County just
north of San Francisco adjacent to San Rafael) For such a good cause to help raise
money for Hands Together and the poorest of the poor in Haiti we of course said yes.
After calling to coordinate available dates we settled on July 13 and 14 to make the
appeal.
Getting ready to make a presentation on Haiti can be daunting. What do you tell those
that may know nothing about this poor country? How do you describe the terrible
conditions in which these people live day by day? Do you r elate the horrific conditions
in Haiti or do you narrate the positive that Fr . Tom and Hands Together are accomplishing? So much material that can be cover ed but all must be summarized in less
than 15 minutes.
Margo and I chose to incorporate both the harsh conditions of the people of Haiti
along with the very optimistic programs that Fr. Tom has put in place to try and make
the lives of those he touches just a little bit better . We tried to appeal to the heart of all
of these good parishioners at St. Rita’s.
St. Rita’s is a medium sized parish with one Mass on Satur day afternoon and three
Masses on Sunday. We spoke at all four of these Masses and wer e greeted very
warmly by the congregation after each of the Masses.
Fr. Kenneth Weare is the pastor and along with Deacon Peter Kehrlein is r esponsible
for the liturgy at St. Rita’s. Fr. Ken welcomed us as beggars fr om Haiti, a country he
too has visited twice. His introduction to our homily/presentation was generous and
introspective. We are pleased to have been able to participate in such a worthy cause.
One other thing we learned from our visit to St. Rita’s was that they too have an outreach like our Mission Haiti. Their Mission is in Guatemala will be described next week.

THE ROAD TO THE DIACONATE
Please keep in prayer this week Jay Krueger as he is formally accepted as a candidate for ordination to the Diaconate for the Ar chdiocese. Many of you may follow the
blog in the Bulletin or on the website r egarding this journey towards ordination. Jay
and Candy have been part of a formation pr ocess for the last 18 months. Since Holy
Orders is a sacrament of the Chur ch, the spouse of any interested person must be
very involved in the whole process. They have both had to undergo psychological
tests, formation classes, retreats, and have spiritual directors. This first period is formally called the period of Aspirancy, where the individual is aspiring to be a Deacon.
The spouse must give permission for her husband to be part of this formation
process. Candy has given this testimony and Jay has written the Ar chbishop requesting his admission to be a candidate for the Diaconate. This Satur day, November 2,
Jay will be formally accepted as a candidate for or dination as a Deacon in our Chur ch.
Please keep Jay and Candy in prayer as they continue to pr epare for ordination in
June of 2017.

At Holy Family’s Giving Bank all are welcome and provided for. These are not necessarily
those who are homeless. Some in our community, who were able to generously donate in the

now at the receiving end. Their children are the ones that cannot concentrate at
school because the family couldn’t afford dinner the night before. Or it may be the older couple who worked their entire lives to find their savings wiped out and don’t know how to tell
their children who are away at college. It is the single
´ mother who has two jobs but still can’t
make ends meet because her male co-worker makes more than she does. It is the man with
limited education who does not qualify for the professional position. Or the prisoner released
without job skills or housing. People are also poor because of our systems, as we require
women on welfare to go to work to keep their benefits, yet it is typically insufficient to pay for
childcare.

The mission of Holy Family School is to instill Catholic values and principles in
VWXGHQWVDQGVXSSRUWHDFKVWXGHQWöVHIIRUWVWRVWULYHIRUHGXFDWLRQDOH[FHOOHQFH+RO\
Family seeks to accomplish this mission without sacrificing the principle that an
education at Holy Family School should be affordable for all families of the parish.
*
Ten years ago, parents of Holy Family School founded Legacy of Learning, the annual
giving program that ensures the school has the resources available to achieve its
mission while maintaining the affordability of a Holy Family School education.
Currently there is a gap of over $1,500 between the cost of educating a Holy Family
School student and the tuition, a gap which Legacy of Learning bridges every single
at
year. Please consider donating to Legacy of Learning online

DISCIPLE’S REFLECTION
CALL TO PRAYER
Begin by calling upon God: In the Name of the Father , and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit, Amen. Let us pause for a moment, and listen attentively to this week’ spassage.
THE WORD OF GOD
Luke 18:9-14 Jesus addressed this parable to those who wer e convinced of
their own righteousness and despised everyone else.
"Two people went up to the temple ar ea to pray; one was a Pharisee and the
other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this
prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the r est of humanity -greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a
week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood of f at
a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his br east
and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell you, the latter went
home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and
the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
FAITH SHARING
Children: Children: If you were getting a grade in prayer, would it be an A or a B or…?
Why?
Teens: It has been said that those who ar e humble approach God with reverence and
respect. How are you humble?
Adults: How would your life be different if Jesus stood right by your side all day , every
minute of the day?
In grace: As we pray as a community ar e we drawing attention to ourselves, or to the
greater glory of God? How do you know the dif ference?
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
GRACE, GRATITUDE AND GENEROSITY
Thank you to our fair chairs for making this year’s fair one of the best ever! Your
energy and enthusiasm shined through this event and your hard work paid off as
everyone had such a wonderful time. Thank you again!
