FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Aloha Maui Prep ‘Ohana,
We are pleased to present the 2014-2015 annual ‘Ohana Giving Report,
and incredibly grateful for what it represents: a generous and involved
community of parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, past and present board
members, friends, foundations, and corporations who wholeheartedly
believe in Maui Prep and what it provides its students: a very special and
rewarding environment for learning and growing.
2014-2015 was indeed a school year that teemed with joyful learning,
exciting discovery, unbridled creativity, and enormous growth; and it was
also a year of some important firsts. For the first time in our history, Maui
Prep invited international students to participate in Maui Prep’s new
boarding program. While this inaugural group was a small one, it nevertheless had a great impact on the
culture of our upper school. Our day students made fast friends with our international students and,
together, they raised the global awareness of everyone in our community. This past winter Maui Prep
celebrated its first Varsity Team MIL Championship on the short and long boards of our Girls’ Surf Team.
And, in the inaugural year of our Middle School Robotics program, Maui Prep’s Middle School Robotics
Team earned first place honors in a Hawaii State competition, and then went on to finish in the top 35 in
a very competitive world competition, held in Louisville, Kentucky.
As is the case every year, Maui Prep would not be able to exist without the incredible and persistent
generosity of its ′Ohana. All gifts, large and small, both financial and in volunteering time, are critical to
our operations and to our ability to support over 40% of our students and families with financial assistance.
Once again, the organization and leadership behind the scenes for all our fundraising efforts were handled
with great aplomb by our own Cathi Minami, Stacy Casco, Michele Pupunu, and Board of Trustee and
Development Chair, Lisa Gibson.
I want to thank Maui Prep parents Lynne Twigg, Corie Bluh, and staff member Michele Pupunu for
their outstanding leadership in resurrecting Maui Prep’s very popular Paniolo event in September 2014.
The Paniolo event is a great friend-raiser for our community and a fundraiser to support student activities,
especially those experiences that involve off-island travel. We are anticipating an even bigger event in
September 2015. A big thank you, for the second year in a row, goes to Maui Prep parent Sarah Burns for
her stellar leadership of our Maui Prep Fund, and also to her amazing team of parent volunteer captains.
In its eighth year, the Maui Prep Fund continued to demonstrate the incredible commitment of our
community as measured by donor participation: 95% of parents, 100% of faculty/staff, and 100% of the
Board of Trustees. Maui Prep’s annual gala in December 2014 – the Jingle Bell Rock ‘n’ Roll Ball – was
another great success. Kudos to volunteer event chairperson Kim Zeigler and her dedicated team of parent
volunteers. Special thanks also goes to our outstanding auctioneer and Maui Prep parent, Warren Gibson.
For the hugely successful “Tom” Golf Tournament, thanks goes to the leadership of Co-Chairs, parents
Chuck Bergson and Charles Head, as well as Tournament Director, parent Kim Zeigler. All told, Maui Prep’s
2014-2015 fundraising efforts raised $692,821. This was an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to all!
Sincerely,
Jonathan L. Silver, PhD

THE CLASS OF 2015
2015 Graduating Class
It was a night to remember for the graduating class of 2015. Friends and family gathered
to celebrate the accomplishments of each of these remarkable students. With a Maui sun
setting over the ocean, these nine graduates walked across the stage towards the next phase
in their lives.
Salutatorian, Molie Glass and Valedictorian, Josh Ancheta, both gave heart-felt speeches
to their fellow grads and Cheyne Magnusson, brother of graduate Gina Marzo, spoke about how
surfing is a metaphor for life and how when you inevitably wipe out "you can choose to resist
it or dance with it." Senior Class President, Allie Mosely, presented the school with a picture
painted of all the states and each graduate's thumbprint of where they will be attending college.
Senior advisors, Ray Parnell and Keenan Reader awarded Gina Marzo with the well-deserved
Faculty Merit Award. Each student was recognized for various awards and scholarships.
Danielle Jefferies was a Pueo Pilot recipient who graduated this year in our second graduating
class that had Pueo Pilot recipients.
The Senior Class was accepted into 50 different universities and was offered over
$1,475,000 worth of scholarship award money over 4 years. Maui Prep would like to thank
the following local organizations for their scholarships and support of Maui Prep’s class of
2015: Mamaru and Aiko Takitani Foundation, Rotary Club of Lahaina, Lahaina Rotary Youth
Foundation, and Hawaii Community Foundation. Maui Prep wishes each of these graduates the
very best as they head off to college. Come back to visit us! A hui hou.

inspired others to give. Each year we honor Tom Rosenquist’s
legacy at the annual Tom Rosenquist Legacy Golf Tournament.
