Here are some excerpts from RI President Ravi's speech this month:
"As Rotary celebrates Membership Month, I want to ask what Rotary means to you. I invite you to share your
story not only with Rotary but with your personal and professional networks - not only why you joined, but
why you are still a member of Rotary today. Is it because of the difference you’ve made in your community
or because of the lifelong friendships you've made? Sharing your Rotary story could help inspire someone to
join.
Promoting our exciting member benefits program, Rotary Global Rewards, will not only help you get more
transformative work done but will also show new and potential members the added value of being a part of
the Rotary network. Find out more yourself about this new program and how it can be used to enhance the
Rotary member experience. Encourage others to do the same.
Every year, the Rotary International Convention serves as a great way to experience what it truly means to
be a part of Rotary. By encouraging a new member to attend the convention, you will have given him or her
the opportunity to be well and truly convinced of the reach and breadth of Rotary.
Membership is important year-round. We must continue to give potential members more reasons to join,
and current members more reasons to stay. Let us work together to strengthen our membership base and to
encourage others to join us as we work to improve our communities and to Be A Gift to the World."

The Rotary clock tower and four faced clock are one of several highly visible Rotary projects in Cranbrook. It
is located in the heart of downtown in Spirit Square, which was recently re-imaged by the City. The entire
Spirit Square is now very pedestrian friendly and visibly appealing.
However, one aspect of the clock tower that is presenting a problem is the clock mechanism that actually
drives the clock hands and keeps the correct time. This mechanism is many decades old having been moved
from the old post office. The clock is serviced by Gord Delamont (Delamont Jeweler Ltd.) who has repeatedly
told us that the old mechanism is worn out and unable to drive the four faced clock. Currently one face is
not working and the other three faces keep questionable time.
As a result of input from Gord Delamont, it was agreed by the club membership on August 13th to upgrade
and replace the clock mechanism with a new electronic mechanism. The new mechanism would include a
chime system that would allow us to not only chime on the hour but also play chimed music on specific dates
or time periods, such as Christmas or Canada Day.
In addition, the electronic clock mechanism will be much easier to service in the future. And most importantly,
the new electronic clock mechanism will keep accurate time on all four faces.
The cost of the project will be $14,000 which includes a $2,000 donation from the Downtown Business
Association. If we put signage on the clock face, such as the Rotary wheel, it will be an add on cost. The
project team (Dave Morley & Fred Hoechsmann) anticipate the project will be completed before November.

Our student has arrived!
Chris Farias arrived mid august and will be attending Grade 11 at Mount Baker for this school year. She is an
avid soccer player and has already enjoyed hiking and kayaking with her first host family, Lallah and Errol
Gunst. Chris and I will travel soon to the District orientation in Idaho and meet all the other students being
hosted in District 5080.
The local Rotary Clubs will be teaming up to recruit for next years exchange program with an information
night at Mount Baker Secondary School on Tuesday September 22. Please encourage any friends with teens
that have thought about pursuing a Rotary exchange to attend the meeting.

Kootenay ICE Report
The ICE headed to Coleman for the Crowsnest Thunder Tourny between Lethbridge (Thursday) & Calgary
(Saturday). Lost both games but was some good pre-season action.
Only 4 days till the first regular season Home Game Friday, September 25 vs. Calgary.
Let's get ready to cheer on our ICE in the 2015/2016 Season.
