Northview Offering Unique Summer Camp Creatives
Northview will be offering four summer enrichment programs in June and July aimed at
providing opportunities for our students to think creatively and analytically, to gain skills,
and to learn for the sake of tackling a topic that interests them. Unlike many regional or
national camps, our Camp Creatives will be offered at a very low cost to our families (t-shirt
and supplies if applicable), while still providing students a chance to develop a talent, chase
a passion, and build their resumes as they prepare for college applications. These camps
will serve as week-long seminars for interested students. Sign
ups will start next week (forms will be available in the main
office by 5/3), and registration is due no later than Monday,
May 23rd. Most camps will have a maximum number of participants, and participants will be accepted on a first come,
first serve basis. No grades. Learning for the sake of learning. Come join us this summer! Here are the options for this
summer’s Camp Creatives:
 Community Art Project: Team up with friends to create a piece of public art that will
brighten an outdoor space somewhere in the Sylvania community (Ms. Darah)
 Philosophy Camp: Come explore what world renowned philosophers have said about


some of life’s biggest questions in a series of coffee house conversations (Mr. Swaggerty)
Fishing Camp: Learn the finer points of fishing on Lake Erie and at the Maumee River
(Mr. Ulrich and Mr. Heath)
Acting for Singers Camp: Students who can sing well will work to improve their activing skills by working in small groups to create scenes from musicals and create believable characterizations and interactions while singing (Mr.
Davis)
 A long standing tradition at Northview is the Northview Student Art Show. This show begins Wednesday, and runs
through Thursday evening. Come join us to check out what
our extremely talented young artists have created!
 Northview Choirs Earn High Marks at States
Northview choirs traveled to Van Buren to compete in the
state competition this weekend, and performed very well!
The Men’s Chorus competed for the first time, and earned a
top rating of I in class C. The Women’s Chorus bumped up a
class this year to B, and earned a II. The A Cappella earned
straight 1s in the highest class, class A. Way to go ChoralCats!

Baseball and Softball Teams Exceeding Expectations
The Baseball Team is tied atop the NLL standings after the first half of the season, in spite
of being picked middle of the pack. The Softball Team has defeated some good TRAC
teams and battled admirably in the NLL, in spite of being picked near the bottom of the
league. Come out and check out a game soon!

NV ENGINEERING STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY PARTICIPATE WITH NASA STUDENT
LAUNCH INITIATIVE. Students, parents and teachers traveled to Alabama to complete
the research students have been planning for months. The big idea was to cool
blood before launching it to see what impact cryogenics might have on astronauts in
space. Students had the opportunity to tour NASA facilities and meet with astronauts this week, learning about he ins and outs of space travel. These students built
their own rocket, circuit board, and satellite to complete their mission. It sounds and
looks like they had a great time!

On the Horizon in 2015-16…
Northview’s College Prep Pathway Launched
 Northview launches our new College Prep Pathway website, bringing all of the information you need to prepare
for the college application and selection process to one webpage. Thanks to the hard work of Mr. Kwiatkowski,
Mr. Vens, our Counselors, and more, this resource is now available to all Northview students. Mont by month,
the College Prep Pathway gives students and parents timely focal points and hyperlinks to resources.
 This resource starts with August of your freshman year and runs all the way through what to pack for your dorm
in the summer after your senior year.
 In addition to the website, you can receive periodic updates by following @NVCollegePrep on Twitter and/or signing up
for the Northview Counselors’ Remind101 text messages, which are distributed to each grade level. You can sign up
for text message reminders by following these steps:

will be well served in this seminar style course. Students will conduct their own, original and authentic research
under the advisement of a faculty member.
Thinking about a career in science, medicine, genetics, nanotechnology, technology, engineering, code, mathematics, energy, space exploration, or other options under the STEM umbrella? Get an in-depth look at a topic of your
choosing here.
Competitive colleges are looking for passion an authenticity, and for those shining stars who stand out from the
rest of the pool of applicants, who also have good grades, are involved in their school communities, and high college entrance test scores. Conducting your own research can help provide an advantage and demonstrate your
passion.
Learning how to conduct academic research will give students a good foundation for studying at an institution of
higher learning.
Students will submit their research projects for competitions in the spring, and will have a chance to earn scholarship money.
Honors STEM Research is open to students in grades 10 through 12 who have completed Honors Science 9 and
have a teacher recommendation.

Come Join Us!
Northview High School’s National Honor Society
Northview High School is proud to have a chapter of the
National Honor Society serving its school and community.
Our National Honor Society chapter holds its four pillars of
character, scholarship, leadership, and service, in the highest
esteem. Prior to membership, each of these pillars is
evaluated by Faculty Council, along with the completion of a
comprehensive application. Faculty Council considers the
following when selecting and retaining members into
National Honor Society at Northview. Volunteerism at Northview and throughout the community. Faculty Council looks for student involvement in activities, clubs, sports, and overall Northview participation, outside of daily class
requirements and activities. Students must be actively involved in community clubs, groups, etc., along with volunteering to support our community. All
NHS students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher to be considered
for and retain membership in NHS. NHS candidates and members are upstanding students, free of suspensions and/or codings. All current and potential members must adhere to behavioral expectations throughout their
career at Northview. For more information regarding Northview’s
chapter of National Honor Society, please contact Darla Omey at
419.824.8570,#5208, or email [email protected].

$75 per Senior
It has become a tradition at Northview for the parents of seniors to work together to
plan some fun and exciting activities to help our students celebrate their last year at
Northview. Activities begin with a picnic in August and continue through the end of
school.
Activities include: Senior Picnic (August 4th)
Senior Breakfast
Pizza Lunch
After Prom
(you don’t have to attend Prom to go to After Prom)
Graduation Yard Signs
Senior Ice Cream Social
These are NOT funded by the school and there will be several fundraisers throughout the
year to provide additional funding. If you would like to contribute more than $75, your
donation will be welcome! Please pay this fee by September 30th 2015.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Planning and carrying out these activities requires a lot of effort and manpower. Volunteers are needed for a variety of things. If you haven’t already
signed up to help with an event or fundraiser please contact:
Shawna Lisowski (419) 206-8188 – [email protected]. Please indicate

After Prom Prizes Needed
The Northview After Prom Prize Committee is in need of donations for the 2016
NV After Prom to be held May 7th. We need your help to make this event a success!
You don’t have to be a parent of a senior to help. The After Prom is fully funded
by the Northview Senior Parents, their fundraising efforts and direct donations
from area businesses and Northview families.
Contributions will be used as door and raffle prizes that help encourage attendance at After Prom and really make the evening. Let’s face it…who doesn’t love
winning prizes!!?! Ideas for donations include: movie passes, restaurant gift cards,
tickets to sporting events/concerts, gas cards, golf equipment, golf passes, park
passes, dorm items and cash that can be used towards the purchase of items
needed.
Your gift is tax deductible and individuals or businesses that wish to donate can
contact Kristin Wygant at 419-704-7657 or email her at [email protected]
Our goal is that every Northview senior that attends will leave with a prize! That
equates to over 300 prizes…large or small, your donation can make the difference!
Thank you to area businesses and families that are willing and able to donate!
Your names will be recognized on our “Wall of Recognition” the evening of the
event!

Many college representatives visits to Northview are complete. The guidance office can assist with any continued college research. Most colleges are now using online view books.
SAT and ACT Testing:
Colleges require that you take one or more standardize admissions test. The most common tests are ACT and SAT. Check
the literature on your preferred college before taking SAT II, Subject Tests, to determine if it is required. The writing portion should be included in your test. Students can register on-line. In certain situations there are limited registration packets available in the guidance office for both tests. Students should check with the individual schools to which they are applying to find out which test to take. Seniors planning on attending college next year should be sure to take the ACT or
SAT in the fall.
Northview High School code for all test registration and college applications is #364-930
Juniors:

Counselors will be meeting with juniors in early 2016 to discuss:

Test dates for ACT and SAT I/II

Inform students about spring college night

Discuss college and career planning

Jr. Plan Meeting will be held in early 2016
Sophomores:

Check out www.ohiomeansjobs.com Counselors will be working with students to introduce this resource for career
counseling purposes.

Check out the list of clubs and activities on the Sylvania Northview website and be sure to get involved!
Freshman:

When a student becomes a freshman, everything starts to “count” towards his/her permanent high school resumegrades, activities, attendance, disciplinary record, etc. As parents you can assist your student’s by continuing to emphasize the importance of doing their best each and every day. Encourage students to record their activities, spots,
clubs, etc. on a resume for future use.
