New military program will allow
easier local and national voting

Those serving our country over­
seas will soon have a new option
to participate in local and national
elections.
At the end of this month the
state of Texas will be fleshing out
the final details for a pilot program
in Bexar County allowing service
men and women overseas to eas­
ily vote through email from areas
deemed hostile fire zones.
“They’ve been able to email
their application, and then we pro­
cess it and send the ballot to them,”
Jacque Callanen, Bexar County
Elections Administrator said. “But
they’ve had to print out the ballot
and send it back over snail mail.”
The new program will allow
members of the military to do
everything via email, to bypass the
delay of traditional mail.
“This is not for all military,”
Callanen said. “Just for those in
hostile fire zones.”
The original absentee voting
process still applies. It is still man­
datory to fill out a Federal Postcard
Application (FPCA) in order to
get a ballot.
“We still have to have a FPCA
for a signature,” Callanen said.
“The application is good for one
calendar year.”
This allows service members
to vote in both runoff and general
elections.
In order for the military to have
all the ballots, they are sent out 45
days before the election, by the
second week in January.
Military voters are just required
to have them sent back, either by
snail mail or email, by 7 p.m. on
Election Day.
Other than the new pilot pro­
gram, there are others who can
benefit from regular absentee vot­
ing as well. All military members
and their dependents can vote via
absentee. There are also civilian
applications for seniors over 65,
the disabled, and those who will
be out of the county.
The pilot program will be in
place for next year’s primaries.

El pastor Raúl García, funda­
dor de la asamblea El Sendero,
celebró con alegría y dándole
gracias al Señor el haberle per­
mitido cumplir el mes pasado 90
años de edad.
Y el próximo 10 de agosto se
prepara para celebrar otra impor­
tante fecha en su vida: 63 años
de su inicio como predicador de
la palabra en El Sendero, igle­
sia ubicada en 5408 de la calle
Daughtry, donde ha ayudado a
forjar el camino de muchos que
necesitaban el amor de Dios.
Gracias a su apoyo y su gran
devoción por crear una comuni­
dad más unida en San Antonio,
García ha logrado expandir sus
servicios a miles de personas.
“Es un honor poder continuar
sirviendo a la comunidad de
San Antonio por medio de los
servicios que ofrecemos en El
Sendero”, señaló el pastor.
“Es un gran pastor y una gran
persona que ha logrado que
muchos se acerquen a Dios”,
expresó por su parte sobre Gar­
cía el reverendo Roger Sánchez,
también miembro de la asamblea.
Sus inicios como pastor
El reverendo García fue parte
del servicio militar durante al­
gunos años, experiencia que le
abrió los ojos para creer que la
fe mueve montañas.
Fue un abril de 1943 cuando
se convirtió en ingeniero de
avia­ción para el ejército. Durante
su primer viaje partió a África,
pasando por el Mediterráneo y
llegando hasta Alemania.
“Eran varios buques los que
cruzaríamos el mar Mediterrá­
neo, y a la mitad nos encontrarían
los alemanes con 10 cañones que
explotarían a todos los barcos”,
explicó el pastor García.
Para su sorpresa, el buque en
el que viajaba fue el único que
logró pasar sin ser atacado, gra­
cias a una tempestad que bloqueó
la vista de los enemigos en aquel
entonces.
“En ese momento me sentí
bendecido y mi fe aumentó de
manera inexplicable”, declaró
García.
A su regreso a los Estados Uni­
dos, el joven sintió una urgencia
por ayudar a los demás a que se
acercaran a Dios.
“Comencé a tocar la trompeta
en la iglesia a la que asistía en
San Antonio, y una de las intér­
pretes de predicación me robó el
corazón”, recordó el pastor.
García pidió la mano de quien
ahora es su esposa, Bertha Gar­
cía, ahora también de 90 años,
y al poco tiempo contrajeron
matrimonio.
“Ella ha sido mi soporte, mi
apoyo en todo lo que hago. Sin
ella no hubiera podido crecer
esta iglesia tanto”, expresó el
pastor. “Con el apoyo de mi
esposa hemos ayudado a mucha
gente no solo a nivelar sus emo­
ciones, sino también por medio
de alimento”.
Debido a que ambos predi­
caban la palabra desde tres años
antes de que la iglesia se forjara,
los García llevan 65 años de ser
pastores.
El pastor y su esposa son
padres de 4 hijos; abuelos de
12 nietos y cuentan ya con 15
bisnietos.
“Mis hijos son predicadores y
mis yernos también. Algunos de
mis nietos ya están entrando al
ministerio también”, comentó.

Dog Whisperer added to
American Dream Mural

Cesar Millan, also known as
the Dog Whisperer is famous
for his television series and
abilities as a dog trainer. This
past week he was presented with
the Alcalde Award by District
1 Councilman Diego Bernal
and added to the Mi Tierra’s
“American Dream Mural”. The
Dog Whisperer was in the city
for his show Cesar Millan Live
that has been touring around the
United States.
In his speech, Councilman Ber­
nal addressed Millan’s contribu­
tion to society before making him
Mayor of La Villita for the next
day. Bernal said it’s the highest
honor the city can bestow.
“There’s a saying by Gandhi
that says ‘the measure of progress
and morality of a civilization is
measured by the way that they
treat their animals’ and I think
what you’ve (Millan) done is
you’ve uncovered something of
ours where we do have a great
deal of love for animals.”
Besides the unveiling of the
new addition done by Robert
Ytuarte what delighted everyone
in the room was a recreation
given to Millan that included his
section of the mural. He was very
thankful for both honors.
“I just wish my mom was
here and my kids were here so
they can see what’s possible.
It’s about believing in yourself,
believing in family, believing in
God. You know even if you have
no money,” Millan said.
MTC Inc. Executive Assistant,
Claudia Robles told La Prensa
about the mural.
“After the founder, Mr. Cortez
(Pete Cortez) passed away his
son George wanted to find a way
to honor his dad and what he ac­
complished in this country so he
started a mural. It kind of took
off from there. It became a way
to honor our Hispanic leaders”
She also revealed that those
added to the mural are selected
because they have a lot of influ­
ence in the Hispanic culture, have
contributed to it, and are those we
can view as role models.

Cómo perder la Casa Blanca en el 2016

Es facilísimo. No hay que rom­
perse la cabeza. Lo único que
tienen que hacer los republicanos
en la Cámara de Diputados es
votar en contra de la reforma
migratoria o boicotear el proceso.
Es todo. Con eso basta para que
su candidato – el que sea – pierda
las elecciones presidenciales en
Estados Unidos en 2016.
A veces parecería que los
congresistas republicanos están
siguiendo al pie de la letra un plan
ideado por su peor enemigo y que
consiste en atacar e insultar al
grupo político de más rápido cre­
cimiento en el país: los hispanos.
En lugar de aprovechar el enorme
avance que lograron los republi­
canos en el Senado aprobando la
legalización de la mayoría de los
11 millones de indocumentados,
muchos miembros del Partido
Republicano en la cámara baja se
han dedicado en los últimos días
a echarlo todo a perder. A veces
da la impresión que algunos de
ellos tienen un particular gusto por
crearse una imagen de adversarios
de los inmigrantes y prejuiciados.
Quizás eso les da votos en las
remotas partes del país donde no
viven muchos extranjeros, pero
es una ceguera política impre­
sionante. No se dan cuenta que
su odio puede ayudarles a ganar
un distrito en Alabama, Arizona
o Alaska pero, al mismo tiempo,
les garantiza una terrible derrota
electoral a nivel nacional dentro
de tres años.
El propio expresidente George
W. Bush rompió su voto de silen­
cio en una entrevista con ABC
News para tratar de convencer a
otros republicanos como él a que
voten a favor de una ruta a la ciu­
dadanía para los indocumentados.
“Es muy importante arreglar
un sistema que está roto, tratar
a la gente con respeto y tener
confianza en nuestra capacidad
de asimilar a más personas”, dijo.
Bush tiene razón en eso. Lás­
tima que cuando fue presidente
no tenía esa misma urgencia para
aprobar una reforma migratoria.
Cuando la propuso en el 2007
fue demasiado tarde y ya se había
acabado todo su enorme capital
político. Bush también dijo en
la entrevista que “la razón para
pasar una reforma migratoria no
es salvar al Partido Republicano”.
Pero Bush peca de ingenuidad.
A los republicanos les urge qui­
tarse ese tema de encima. Mitt
Romney perdió la pasada elec­
ción presidencial por su absurda
y tonta idea de “autodeportar” a
millones de indocumentados. John
Boehner, el líder de la cámara baja,
no ha aprendido las lecciones de
la historia reciente. Como decía
un viejo sacerdote en mi escuela
secundaria: “Ve la tempestad, y
no se hinca”. Si Boehner, como
amenazó recientemente, rehusa
llevar este tema a votación, estaría
cometiendo un verdadero suicidio
político para su partido. Es muy
desconcertante y desafortunado
que Boehner, en un comunicado,
haya llamado equivocada y “apu­
rada” la propuesta migratoria del
Senado. Parece estar desconectado
de lo que quiere la mayoría del
país después de casi tres décadas
de espera, según las encuestas
¿De verdad Boehner quiere ser
el nuevo villano de la comunidad
hispana reemplazando al odiado
sheriff Joe Arpaio? ¿En serio
quiere ser parte del tristemente
célebre grupo antiinmigrante
conformado por Pete Wilson, Tom
Tancredo, Jan Brewer y Ted Cruz?
Ya lo veremos. Mientras tanto,
vamos a ponerle un poquito de
aritmética e historia al argumento
de que los republicanos perderán
la Casa Blanca si boicotean la
reforma migratoria.
En el 2000 un pequeño grupo de
votantes hispanos hizo que Bush
ganara la Florida y la presidencia.
En el 2004 Bush atrajo 44 por
ciento del voto latino y repitió en
la Casa Blanca.
En el 2008 un 67 por ciento de
votantes hispanos ayudó a elegir
al primer presidente afroameri­
cano y en el 2012 Obama arrasó
con el apoyo de 71 de cada 100
votantes hispanos. En el 2016 los
republicanos tienen la oportunidad
histórica de compartir el crédito
con los demócratas en el tema de
la reforma migratoria y dejar atrás
una maldición de años. Mi­llones
de votantes latinos decidirán
esa elección. Pero si, a pesar de
todo, los republicanos apelan a
los instintos antiinmigrantes de
los más extremistas, perderán la
Casa Blanca en el 2016 y pasarán
muchos años antes de conseguir el
perdón de los latinos. Como dice
un sabio dicho mexicano: “Sobre
advertencia no hay engaño”.

The meaning of Governmental ‘Legitimacy’

Egyptians are posed with a
philosophical conundrum regard­
ing the essence of democracy.
Does governmental legitimacy
stem from legality or something
else, and at what point will a loss
of legitimacy cause a leader to
lose a mandate to govern?
Answering these related ques­
tions could determine whether
demands for abdication, or even a
coup, are justified. Though doing
so would normally be a passive
mental exercise, this is not so
in the aftermath of the ouster of
President Mohamed Morsi. In
fact, disagreements over the an­
swer to these questions have led to
physical clashes that are affecting
the country’s political stability.
If the legitimate removal of a
head of state requires an electoral
defeat, thus establishing the legal­
ity of a change in government,
then Russia’s tsars, Cuba’s Ful­
gencio Batista, Iran’s last shah,
and Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi
would never have been ‘legiti­
mately’ removed from power.
Also, even contemporary absolute
monarchs like King Abdullah of
Saudi Arabia are widely seen as
legitimate heads of state.
It seems clear then that legality
cannot be the sole prerequisite
for legitimacy. Neither can everchanging public opinion, which
fluctuates even faster than incom­
ing exit polls on election nights.
At the same time, if the word
“legitimacy” is to retain any tan­
gible application to governance,
then it is a worthwhile endeavor
to determine when a head of state
will become illegitimate and lose
his mandate to govern.
There is a threshold point below
which a leader loses the right to
rule. It is then that extralegal re­
moval becomes philosophically
legitimate, as opposed to being
merely tolerable. This author
suggests the following concep­
tualization of governmental le­
gitimacy, in which the thoughts
and conduct of the people are key
determinants, as they should in a
democracy.
Legitimacy consists of both
subjective and objective com­
ponents. The subjective one is
internal and akin to personal opin­
ion. The objective component is
more visible since it pertains to
the public’s willingness to accept
the final decisions of governing
authorities and not defy their
enforcement (at least not through
extrajudicial means); in essence,
it is synonymous with compliance
with the rule of law.
For this reason, legitimacy
does not always require ma­
joritarian approval or support.
Mild acceptance will suffice. For
example, most Americans can
probably identify at least a couple
of Supreme Court decisions that
they dislike or even believe were
incorrectly decided. Yet, their
continued acceptance of the en­
forceability of such rulings by an
unelected court is, in itself, a man­
ifestation of the court’s objective
legitimacy. It must be made clear
that governmental legitimacy is
inherently mutable and cannot
be expressed in absolute terms.
Rather, it must be measured as if
on a gradient scale.
To illustrate, President Nixon’s
decision to recognize the People’s
Republic of China (P.R.C.) in
1972 increased its legitimacy, a
milestone after over two decades
of recognizing the Taiwan-based
regime as mainland China’s
legitimate government. This act
of diplomacy changed the U.S.
government’s conduct toward
the Communist regime, without
necessarily changing U.S. poli­
cymakers’ opinions regarding its
guiding ideology. Conduct alone
increased the regime’s objective
legitimacy.
In sum, objective legitimacy is
defined by individuals’ actions,
whereas subjective legitimacy
is based on individuals’ beliefs.
Because democracy pertains
to the will of the people, then
the focus of this multifactorial
analysis must inevitably be the
public itself. A head of state’s
actions alone will not endow him
with ‘democratic’ governmental
legitimacy, no matter how egali­
tarian or open-minded he may be.
A more relevant criterion is how
the public reacts to him.
That is why Morsi, like
Mubarak before him, may find
that retaining his legitimacy de­
pends less on winning elections
and more on appeasing political
opponents unwilling to back
down.
Protect students; maintain accountability

(TX-23) Friday voted to protect
students and vital programs by
voting against H.R. 5 – which
includes drastic cuts to educa­
tion funding, removes account­
ability, and lowers standards for
teachers.
“Instead of making things
better, this legislation guts the
core goal that all students should
receive a quality education,”
said Congressman Gallego. “It
leaves children behind by taking
resources from kids who need it
most. Further, this bill encour­
ages states to game the system
and lower accountability stan­
dards and teacher effectiveness.
Already, Texas ranks 50 of 51
in percentage of population who
graduated from high school.
In a vast district like the 23rd,
this legislation accomplishes
the difficult feat of impacting
everyone the same way: it is bad
for everybody. It harms students
in both rural and urban areas and
everywhere in between. That’s
why everyone from teachers to
chambers of commerce were
united in their opposition.”
The U.S. Chamber of Com­
merce and the National Educa­
tion Association both opposed
the bills arguing it would turn
the clock back on accountability.
Background:
• H.R. 5 includes drastic cuts
to education funding.
• The bill allows states to
weaken standards; it allows states
to establish weak accountability
systems that would not require
performance targets for student
achievement, specific actions
to improve low performance, or
consequences if schools do not
improve.
• It lowers standards for kids
with disabilities
• It reduces equity by shifting
funds for teacher training away
from vulnerable school districts,
•H.R. 5 eliminates the poverty
threshold requirement of cur­
rent law, which states that if the
percentage of students living in
poverty in a particular school is
less than 40%, Title I funds must
be spent on programs target­
ing those low-income students
specifically
•The bill weakens measure­
ments for teacher effectiveness,
and repeals the highly-qualified
teacher requirement (under cur­
rent law, in order to be deemed
a highly qualified teacher, public
school teachers must hold at
least a bachelor’s degree, have
obtained full state certification
or have passed the state teacher
licensing examination, and hold
a license to teach)
• Finally, the bill removes
graduation rates as an account­
ability measure,

Something good,
something bad and
the haters are back
This week in Schertz-Cibolo
residents are taking up arms to pro­
test the opening of a Walmart store.
The arguments are reminiscent
of the ones aired when the retail
giant proposed setting up a store
near Hardberger Park in northwest
San Antonio. The aesthetics, the
neighborhood ambiance and what­
ever reason those opposed to the
business could come up with and
be add to the argument against the
proposed store.
Believe it or not, there is a posi­
tive side to this maligned American
company. It became apparent
this week when the company an­
nounced they were going to hire
200 partners for its soon to open
Bandera and Grissom Rds. store.
The upside to those hires is
that returning veterans honorably
discharged would go to the head
of the line. Apparently Walmart is
aware of the difficulties for these
individuals returning home and
being unable to find a job. Kudos,
Walmart for remembering those
whose previous line of work saw
them clock in for more than an eight
hours a day.
Rolling Stone Magazine is on
everybody’s radar and in most in­
stances in their cross-hairs making
them the bad ones this week. Seems
that the August monthly issue has
accused Boston bomber, Dzhokhar
Tsarnaev, on its cover and it’s
not sitting well with a number of
retailers.
Observers say the way he’s pic­
tured makes him appear too much
like a rock star, along the lines of a
Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan from
back in the day.
To date CVS and Walgreens
drug stores have pulled the publica­
tion from its shelves and no word
if and when they’ll stock it again.
To all this, Rolling Stone, issued
a statement Wednesday saying
the story was part of its “longstanding commitment to serious
and thoughtful” coverage of the
most important current political and
cultural issues.
The haters appear to be of the
same ilk that took off after Sebas­
tien De La Cruz performed the
national anthem in game three of
the NBA championship series be­
tween the San Antonio Spurs and
the Miami Heat.
While the excitement of the
contest on the floor held everyone’s
attention the people on twitter had
a game of their own going. Who
could be the most obnoxious in
slamming the young singer be­
cause he sang the Star Spangled
Banner in a mariachi outfit? The
traditional clothing he wears when
he performs with various mariachi
groups.
A similar repeat of that ensued
earlier this week after the Home
Run Derby competition during
Major League Baseball’s All-Star
game festivities.
This time the tweeters took
off after Pedro Gomez of ESPN
conducted bilingual interviews
with Aroldis Chapman and Yoenis
Céspedes.
As with De La Cruz they blasted
those involved with reminders that
baseball was America’s past time
and they should be speaking in
English after all if they were mak­
ing their money for an American
company.
Because of the offensive lan­
guage we opted to not publish the
tweets because this is America and
we can have the right to do as we
please.
Lo bueno que está ocurriendo
esta semana es una compañía que
se ha catalogado como el demonio
cada vez que quiere construir una
nueva tienda. En Shertz-Cíbolo,
hay residentes que están alzando
los brazos para protestar por la
apertura de una tienda Walmart.
Los argumentos recuerdan a
los que se manifestaron cuando
el gigante minoritario propuso
establecer una tienda cerca del
Parque Harderberg en el noroeste
de San Antonio. A la estética, el
ambiente del vecindario y cualquier
razón que se les ocurrió a quienes
se opusieron se le pueden agregar
al argumento en contra de la tienda
propuesta.
Aunque no lo crea, hay un lado
positivo para esta difamada compa­
ñía norteamericana. Esta semana se
hizo aparente cuando la compañía
anunció que iba a contratar 200
asociados para la próxima tienda
a inaugurar en Bandera y Gri­ssom
Rd.
El aspecto positivo es que los
veteranos que regresan con una
baja honorable serían los primeros
en la fila. Al parecer, Walmart esta
consciente de las dificultades que
tienen esta personas al regresar
a casa y el no poder encontrar
trabajo.
Bien hecho, Walmart, por acor­
darse de quienes su línea de empleo
anterior los vio entrar a un trabajo
de más de ocho horas al día.
La revista Rolling Stone está
bajo la mirilla con algo que los
hace ver como los malos de la
novela de esta semana. Al parecer
la revista del mes de agosto tiene en
su portada al acusado de terrorista
de Boston, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, y
esto no les ha caído nada bien a un
bien número de tiendas minoristas.
Los observadores dicen que la
fotografía lo hace lucir más como
una estrella de rock en la línea
de Jim Morrison y Bob Dylan de
aquellos días.
Hasta la fecha, las tiendas CVS
y Walgreens han retirado la publi­
cación de sus estantes y no se ha
dicho si acaso cuando la van a tener
en existencia otra vez.
Para esto, Rolling Stone emitió
una declaración el miércoles
dicien­do que la historia era parte
de un “compromiso de toda la
vida para coberturas serias y con­
sideradas” de asuntos culturales y
políticos actuales más importantes.
Los odiosos parecen ser del
mismo tipo de los que aparecieron

nal en el juego tres de la serie se
campeonato de la NBA entre los

Mientras que la emoción de la
competencia en la duela mantuvo
la atención de todos, las personas
en Twitter tenían su propio juego
en acción. ¿Quién podria ser el más
repulsivo en criticar ferozmente al
joven cantante porque canto el Star
Spangled Banner vestido en un
traje que charro? La ropa tradicio­
nal que el viste cuando actúa con
varios grupos de mariachi.
Algo similar resultó a principios
de esta semana después de la com­
petencia Derby Home Run durante
las festividades del juego de las
estrellas de las Ligas Mayores de
Béisbol.
Esta vez, los twitters criticaron
a Pedro Gómez de ESPN luego
de que llevara a cabo entrevistas
bilingües con Aroldis Chapman y
Yoenis Céspedes.
Al igual que con De La Cruz,
ellos arremetieron en contra de los
in­volucrados con recordatorios de
que el béisbol era un pasatiempo
nor­teamericano y que después de
todo ellos deberían estar hablando en
inglés si estaban ganando su dinero
para una compañía norteameri­
cana en Norteamérica y tenían que
a­prender a hablar en inglés.
Debido al lenguaje ofensivo que
se usó, optamos por no publicar los
tweets porque eso es Norteamérica
y podemos tener el derecho de
hacer lo que nos plazca.

Los Colegios Universitarios Durante la Preparatoria o Early College High Schools son similares a los programas de inscripción dual o “dual credit”
que permiten que los jóvenes acumulen créditos universitarios mientras terminan la preparatoria – pero mucho mejores. Por ejemplo, en esta
colaboración entre los Alamo Colleges y las preparatorias locales, no empezamos con los estudiantes mas destacados. Le dimos ingreso a aquellos
con el más alto riesgo de abandonar la escuela – estudiantes que aún no dominan el Ingles y aquellos sin acceso a asesoría académica o dinero para
ir a la universidad.

Compounds outsmart solid tumors’ malfunctioning machinery

Molecular biologists in the
School of Medicine at The Uni­
versity of Texas Health Science
Center San Antonio have found a
novel way to fine-tune the activity
of cells’ protein-disposing ma­
chinery, with potentially cancerfighting effects.
This machinery, the protea­
some, is deregulated in cancer.
Agents called protease inhibitors
are viewed as potential anticancer therapies, but they in­
discriminately curb proteasome
activity, which also includes
protein recycling. Such strategy is
effective to kill cells in aggressive
blood cancers but leads to drug
resistance and excessive toxicity
in solid tumors.
The new strategy may change
that. By basically outsmarting
the cell’s machinery, compounds
called allosteric regulators are
able to fine-tune the proteasome
actions instead of block them.
“The result is that cell lines
from solid tumors, which are
resistant to existing therapy, are
sensitive to these agents,” said
Pawel Osmulski, Ph.D., assistant
professor of molecular medicine
at the Health Science Center. He
and Maria Gaczynska, Ph.D.,
associate professor of molecular
medicine, co-authored a report
inMolecular Pharmacology that
provides a basis for this approach.
Deregulation of the protea­
some’s actions is noted in cancer
or during aging and contributes
to intracellular pathologies. “It is
easy to envision that precise ad­
justing of the proteasome activi­
ties with therapeutic molecules
would be highly beneficial in
many human conditions,” Dr.
Osmulski said.
“Allosteric regulators are better
than proteasome-affecting agents
used in clinics because they do not
induce classical drug resistance,”
Dr. Gaczynska said. “They bind
to sites on the proteasome mol­
ecule used by natural regulatory
proteins. They are more specific
and are not restricted to protea­
some inhibition but can activate
the proteasome under certain
conditions.”

Esta semana comencé como

noche en Telemundo, y ha sido
verdaderamente complaciente y
al mismo tiempo cansado.
Mis experiencias han sido
únicas, ya que he aprendido a
utilizar una cámara, a editar
videos, a utilizar el prompter,
¡el prompter! La peor manera de
terminar tu día.
Cuando comencé me sentí
un poco nerviosa y juré que
no aprendería nada porque yo
siempre me he considerado una
persona de “aprendizaje lento”,
sin embargo, esta vez fallé al
descifrarme.
Desde que llegué he puesto
todo lo que está en mí para
aprender lo más rápido posible,
y aunque me ha costado horas
de desvelo, he logrado algo que
jamás imaginé poder hacer.
En algún momento me llegué
a subestimar, pues pensé que no
podría llegar a hacer tantas cosas
cuencia cuando alguien no hace lo
que verdaderamente le apasiona.
Y con certeza puedo decir que la
mayoría lo dicen porque ya están
casados y tienen la responsabili­
dad de mantener a una familia o
porque tienen muchos gastos que
no podrían dejar.
Estoy de acuerdo con esa men­
talidad, ya que antes que nada
uno tiene que asegurarse de ser
responsable. Sin embargo, creo
que cuando realmente deseas

Workforce Solutions Alamo
released information Friday indi­
cating that the San Antonio metro
area unemployment rate increased
to 6.7 percent in June, up from 6.2
percent reported for May. Total
non-agricultural employment in
the San Antonio-New Braunfels
MSA expanded by 6400 jobs overthe-month, while annual growth
remained strong with 14,700 more
jobs since June 2012.
“Public school jobs and Educa­
tion jobs at the College and Univer­
sity level contributed the greatest
losses at this time,” said Workforce
Solutions Alamo Executive Direc­
tor, Patrick W. Newman. “Summer
break impacts the unemployment
rate each year expectedly.”
Leisure and Hospitality contrib­
uted the most job gains since May
2013 with a reported 4,300 jobs and
an annual gain of 1,900 jobs. Con­
struction continues its job growth
with an additional 800 jobs over
the month, and 3,500 jobs over the
year, making it the fastest growing
industry in the Alamo region at this
time. Manufacturing contributed
500 more jobs in June, and is slowly
attempting to overcome a deficit
of -300 jobs since this same time
last year.
As stated, the largest job losses
since June occurred in the Govern­
ment sector reporting -800 jobs with
the majority of the losses happening
in the Local Government sub-sector
as public schools release staff for the
summer break. The sub-sector Edu­
cational Services reported -800 jobs
yet was almost completely offset by
the growth in the Health Care and
Social Assistance sub-sector which
reported a gain of 700 jobs.
Other gains include 200 jobs in
Trade, Transportation and Utilities;
200 jobs in Information; 200 jobs
in Financial Activities; and 500
jobs in Other Services. Mining and
Logging (Oil and Gas) reported no
job changes in June.
Comparing the Workforce Solu­
tions Alamo metro area to the state
and nation, the Texas unadjusted

creased to 6.9 percent in June, up
from 6.5 percent in May. The na­
tion’s unadjusted unemployment

A citywide program designed
to provide community with
greater access to books needs
our help. The SAReads Summer
Book Drive is a collaborative
effort that relies on community
support to collect and distribute
books to schools and nonprofit
organizations across the city to
give kids access to books.
The idea is to increase lit­
eracy rates in San Antonio.
According to the Interna­
tional Reading Association,
80 percent of preschool and
after-school programs serving
low-income populations have
no age-appropriate books for
their children. Other studies
show the most successful way
to improve the reading achieve­
ment is to increase kids’ access
to books. Findings even show
higher-than-average scores
among students who reported
more types of reading mate­
rial at home according to The
Nation’s Report Card: FourthGrade Reading 2001.
So at least part of the solution

children a real head start by
giving them access to books.

gram in Software Engineering
through the graduate Engineer­
ing Department starting this fall.
“This certificate program
will allow students who are
new to the field of software
development to quickly acquire
the necessary skills to become
successful software engineers,”

program is ideal for those stu­
dents who want to learn specific
skills in software engineering

of the following six courses:

Word’s football coaching staff,
according to a release sent out by
the university.
The Cardinals’ head coach
Larry Keenan explained it was
Williams’ idea to pursue coaching.
“Ricky reached out to me
about getting into coaching,”
said Kennan. “We have an
opening and he is looking to
get into coaching so I think it
is a good fit. His experience
will be a big help to our staff
and players and I think he will
have a positive effect on our
recruiting efforts.”
No doubt Williams carries
major name recognition—not
all for the best of reasons—and
brings solid experience collegiately and professionally.
The Heisman Trophy win-
ner’s resume is not to be overlooked as he spent 11 seasons
in the NFL and rushed for over
10,000 yards and 66 touchdowns.
In his prime during the 2002
season Williams rushed for
1,852 yards and 16 touchdowns.
He averaged over 115 rushing
yards a game that season.
His great skill and the arena
in which he displayed it drew
a lot attention from the media.
Issues with William’s personal
life became very public. The
man once thought to be the next
Walter Payton had his career
derailed by multiple failed
drug tests.
Williams’ overcame his issues
and the adversity, but his career
would never be the same. The
running back enjoyed one more
productive season after a slew of
troubles from 2005 to 2007.
His 2009 season showed flashes
of the young man Mike Ditka once
traded his entire lot of draft picks
for—an unprecedented move.
Williams’ past should bode well
for university as he can teach the
young, student athletes how to
avoid some of the mistakes he
made off the field. On the field,
Williams didn’t make many mistakes and that’s where this hire
really benefits the Cardinals—he
holds 20 NCAA records alone.
“We knew that the move to
Division I would increase the talent pool of candidates for staffing
positions as they came available,”
said UIW Athletic Director Mark
Papich. “When Coach Kennan
approached me regarding Ricky
as a potential addition to our staff

believed to be true. The potential

Brent retires at 25

this week in the midst of the charges he faces after being indicted on

2013 Super Series World Series Championship held from
July 5-12 in Round Rock,
Texas. Our team went into
this tournament determined
to win the World Series after
falling short last year. We
won the tournament with a
7 - 1 record and avenging
our only lost by beating Action Baseball team 8 - 7 in
the final game to capture our
Championship.
It was a total team effort
as all 12 team members contributed in more than one
way. Lots of S.A.crifice has
been done by this Cardinal
team. We were hit by injuries
and adversities all year long,
somehow our team managed
to hang in there even when
we were down to nine players
due to injuries.
We finally got healthy and
added players that wanted to
play as a team by the end of

La edición 2013 NBA Summer
League, celebrada del 12 al 22 de julio
en los gimnasios del campus de la
University of Las Vegas, el Thomas
Mack Center y COX Pavilion, fueron
testigos de la gran fiesta basquetbolera
que se estuvo desarrollando, hasta que
los 22 equipos participantes se fueron
eliminando.
Cada equipo en sus respectivas
alineaciones llevaron jugadores con
dos o tres años jugados en la NBA,
así como también novatos y basquetbolistas colegiales que recientemente
fueron elegidos en el 2013 NBA
Draft.
Del torneo resultará un campeón,
que por primera vez será entronado
con todos los honores.
Anteriormente, en la competencia
de la liga de verano, misma que se
juega al culminar la temporada regular en la NBA, no se jugaban finales,
solo se le reconocía al equipo que
más partidos ganara, tal es el caso
de la pasada contienda en la que los
Warriors de Golden State finalizaron
invictos con 5-0.
Lamentablemente, para los Spurs,
que estuvieron dirigidos por el coach
asistente Une Udoka (quien allá fue el
entrenador en jefe), su participación
solo quedó en cuatro partidos jugados
con dos victorias en el rol regular
y una derrota en la primera ronda
eliminatoria.
Los Spurs al principio se impusieron ante Charlotte Bobcats con
marcador de 69 a 68, destacando el
guardia Cory Joseph con 19 puntos
encestados, partido en el que enseñó
sus destrezas para llegar con velocidad al aro.
En el segundo partido, los Spurs
fueron superados por Toronto Raptors
82-76. Joseph contribuyó con 16 unidades y 6 asistencias. Su compañero,
el poste Deshaun Thomas, dio señales
de vida anotando 16 puntos.
En el tercer encuentro, Spurs ante
los Hawks de Atlanta se impusieron
con marcador de 96 a 87, partido en
el que se impuso el guardia francés
Nando De Colo, quien con su experiencia en el baloncesto europeo
y de su primera temporada en la
NBA con los Spurs pudo decir
presente, jugando contundente
defensiva y productiva ofensiva.
En la primera ronda eliminatoria,
los Spurs cayeron ante los Cavaliers
de Cleveland con pizarra de 72-66,
batalla en la que el novato Marcus
Denmon (guardia) anotó 19 puntos, seguido por el delantero Hollis
Thompson con 9 unidades, el poste
australiano Aron Baynes, que hizo
13 puntos, y el central Dexter Pittman
con 8 puntos.

Atlético Toros, el campeón de Veteranos LESA

Con un selecto grupo de
futbolistas con estudios en la
prestigiosa escuela preparatoria
Edison High School, el club
Atléticos Toros se inició siendo
un equipo triunfador. Con el
paso de los años siguieron practicando su deporte favorito en el
balompié regional independiente
de San Antonio, sobresaliendo
personalmente y colaborando en
los triunfos de los astados.
El padre tiempo hizo mella
en sus físicos; sin embargo, no
se alejaron de las canchas, sino,
todo lo contrario, se pudieron
acomodar en el sector veterano
de Liga Ejecutiva de San Antonio
(LESA). Y aquí, bajo la dirección
del entrenador Humberto Reyes,
quien en sus 15 años como
encabezado y con el apoyo de
sus asistentes y jugadores Pedro
Ledezma y Luis López, este año
lograron consumar su sueño al
coronarse campeón en el Torneo
de Veteranos 2013 LESA.
Atléticos Toros se clasificó
cuarto en la tabla general.
En la liguilla dieron cuenta de
los Bukaros con marcador de 3-0.
En la semifinal eliminaron al
ex campeón Potosino con marcador de 1-0, y en la gran final
doblegaron 2-1 a los Corsarios.
“Este es nuestro primer
campeonato ganado. Tenemos
un par de subcampeonatos por
lo que estamos contentos y
nos seguimos preparando en la
defensa del título”, comentó el
entrenador Reyes.
“Con los porteros titulares
Luis López y Antonio Iglesias,
Atlético Toros continuará defendiendo el título. Nuestra meta
es ganar un segundo trofeo de
campeón en LESA. Lo principal
de nuestro plantel es que todos
nos conocemos y estamos en
buen ritmo de juego. La convivencia entre jugadores ha
sido la base de nuestros buenos
resultados. Aquí todos son tratados por igual. No hay estelares,
somos un equipo completo que
solo desea todo lo mejor para
nuestros seguidores y familiares
que siempre nos han respaldado”,
comentó Pedro Ledezma.
Así durante su coronación,
Atléticos Toros fueron felicitados por jugadores rivales y por
miembros de la mesa directiva,
cuyo director ejecutivo lo es el
señor Armando S. Núñez, fundador de LESA y de San Antonio
Futbol Association. Esta liga
alberga diversas ligas en las divisiones de Segunda, Primera A,
Primera División, Liga Veteranos
y Liga Femenil. Esta entidad que
se ha abierto paso en el balompié
independiente de nuestra deportiva y turística región de El
Álamo, misma que ha tenido a
cargo la organización de famosos
torneos a nivel regional, estatal
y nacional en su sede El Volcán
Sports Complex y las canchas del
Olmos Basin Park.

de Liga Latina, el equipo Independiente derrotó al duro rival
UDG, encuentro que tuvo un
arbitraje “tendencioso” finalizando con marcador de 3 goles

Hubo faltas claras con tarjetas
rojas directas por parte de los
independentistas que lograron
mellar la defensiva universitaria.
Y estamos esperando que en
el partido de vuelta, a celebrarse
este domingo 21 de julio en el

United SportsCar Racing Basketball Without Borders
Announced 2014 season will be held in Portugal for first

of the emergence of important
details regarding the inaugural
United SporsCar Racing season
in 2014, International Motor
Sports Association (IMSA) officials recently announced a driver
rating system, as well as pit and
paddock regulations and various
procedures to be implemented.
Driver Ratings: All drivers
participating in the 2014 series
resulting from the merger between
the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón (ALMS)
and the GRAND Rolex Sports Car
Series will receive a driver rating
from IMSA, with four driver classifications: Platinum, Gold, Silver
and Bronze.
Teams competing in the prototype (P) and GT Le Mans (GTLM)
classes will not be restricted in
terms of driver rating. In the
Prototype Challenge (PC) and
GT Daytona (GTD) classes, one
Gold or Platinum driver for every
race may pilot each car. However,
in 24-hour events, a combination
of two Gold or Platinum drivers
may drive.
Every car must have a minimum
of two and a maximum of three
drivers-regardless of class- for
every event, with the exception
of 12-hour events- which will
allow for a maximum of four drivers; 24-hour events will allow a
maximum of five. Minimum and
maximum drive times be established per driver rating and event,
with minimum drive times to be
approximately 30 percent of the
total event time.
IMSA’s driver rating system is
based on guidelines established
by the Féderation Internationale de l” Automobile (FIA) for
international competition. The
standard minimum age for drivers
is 18. However, IMSA may allow
younger drivers with significant
driving experience to compete
in the United SportsCars Racing
events.
Platinum drivers are defined
as professionals under the age
of 55 with experience and success at the highest levels of
motorsport. Platinum drivers
may have held FIA Super Licenses to race in Formula 1,
are past overall winners of the
24 Hours of Le Mans, factory
drivers who have finished inside
the top five internationally recognized championships such as
the GRAND-AM Rolex Series
DP class, the ALMS P1 or GT
class, NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series, NASCAR Nationwide
Series, NASCAR Camping
World Truck Series, FIA World
Endurance Championship LMP1
and GTE Pro classes, Deutsche
Tourenwagen Masters (DTM),
IndyCar and CART/Champ Car
among others.
Drivers with a Gold classification are those who meet the
criteria of Platinum drivers but
are between the ages of 55 and
59, or are professional or semiprofessional drivers under the
age of 55 who have successfully
competed in various secondary
international single-seater series,
such as Indy Lights; national
single-seater series, like Pro
Mazda; or series organized by a
manufacturer, such as Porsche.
Silver drivers are racers over
the age of 60 who satisfy the
criteria to be a Platinum driver,
drivers over the age of 55 who
would otherwise qualify as a
Gold driver, or are amateur
drivers under the age of 60 who
have won races in a national
championship or international
series alongside a professional
driver. Drivers who have won
championships in series such as
IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by
Yokohama, Lamborghini Super
Trofeo or Ferrari Challenge
would also qualify as Silver.
Bronze drivers are amateur
racers who were over the age of
30 when their first racing license
was issued, with little or no
single-seater experience or without significant race experience.
Drivers over the age of 60 who
meet the criteria for the Silver
category also qualify as Bronze.
In all cases, IMSA
may consider drivers eligible in
a certain category based on their
performances and achievements,
even if they have not met the
specific criteria to qualify.
Pit Lane and Paddock Regulations/Procedures: Procedures
and regulations for pit road in
2014 will combine the best and
most efficient practices currently
being utilized in ALMS and
GRAND-AM.
Pit stops will include changing
tires and adding fuel at the same
time, with a maximum of six crew
personnel and two wheel guns allowed over the wall at one time.
All cars will use single-lug wheels.
Pit fuel tanks must be permanently
mounted to a trolley and not extend
over the track surface side of the
pit wall. All pit tanks will have a
restrictor fitted at the filler end of
the fuel hose.
Pit stalls will be a minimum of
22’ x 10’ on both the hot and cold
sides of the pit wall. All structures
must fit in that area and cannot be
taller than 13 feet other than radio
antenna masts. Firesuits will be
required only on the “hot” side
of the pit wall and for anybody
handling fuel on pit lane, but are
recommended for crew working
on the cold side of the wall.
In the paddock, each team gets
a space with a total footprint of
90’ x 30’ per entered car, except
in certain instances. The space
will be regulated, but teams will
be allowed to construct temporary walls, utilize floor tiles, etc.
within specific guidelines. The
same space allocation applies to all
classes, but space may vary based
upon paddock configuration at certain circuits, such as street courses.
Beginning in the 2014, the new
International Sports Association
(IMSA) will be the sanctioning
body of United SportsCar Racingthe highly anticipated road-racing
series resulting from the merger
of the American Le Mans Series
presented by Tequila Patrón and
the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports
Car Series- as well as the developmental series: Continental Tire
Sports Car Challenge and the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites powered
by Mazda.
In addition, IMSA also plans to
continue sanctioning the following
single-make series: Ferrari Challenge, IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge
by Yokohama, Ultra 94 Porsche
GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by
Michelin and Lamborghini Super
Trofeo.
IMSA is the exclusive strategic
partner in North America with
the Automobile Club de l’Ouest
(ACO) which operates the 24
Hours of Le Mans as a part of the
FIA World Endurance Championship. The partnership enables
selected United SportsCar competitors to earn automatic entries
into the prestigious 24 Hours of
Le Mans.
The inaugural season will feature between 10 and 12 races at
some of the most storied road
courses and street circuits in North

and Greg Quiroga. Playing
in semi-finals S.A. Cardinals
loss 12 to 4, where we played
our worst game of the tournament. Giving ourselves a
chance because of how we
had played and being a double
elimination tournament it
came down to a winner take
all between the S.A. Cardinals and Action Baseball. It
was a battle back and forth
between two great teams.

Figueroa, Jr., and Josh Martinez. It came down to the last
inning top of the 7th we are
tied at 7. Christina Barajas

We had each team member
write down team and individual goals that they wanted
to accomplish at the World
Series. In their own words
they wanted to win the Championship, bring the gold ring
home. By playing as a TEAM
and never giving up they were
able to accomplish this! Great

Ha llegado un nuevo evento al
River Walk de San Antonio. Se trata
del evento educativo Bat Loco que
estará todos los martes hasta el 13
de agosto en el puente que se encuentra cerca de las calles Camden
y Newell.
Se han de preguntar, ¿de qué
trata? Si bien, este evento educativo
se ha creado con el fin de demostrar

Había bastante nerviosismo
en la casa de remates Sotheby de
Londres. Se estaba ofreciendo una
de las piezas más extraordinarias
de la colección. La puja empezó
a subir: cien mil, doscientos mil,
trescientos mil dólares.
El rematador comenzó a sudar.
Aunque estaba acostumbrado
a las grandes subastas, esta le
produjo escalofríos. La puja
siguió subiendo: trescientos cincuenta mil, cuatrocientos mil,
¡cuatrocientos noventa y cinco
mil dólares!
Hasta ahí llegó la subasta.
No hubo más ofertas. Un coleccionista de Londres adquirió el
violín Stradivarius en casi medio
millón de dólares.
Son de veras excepcionales las
ventas de ciertos objetos de arte.
Se pagan centenares de miles de
dólares por una miniatura de Velázquez, o un boceto de Rembrandt,
o una copa labrada de Benvenuto
Cellini o un violín de Stradivarius,
como aquel que vendió la casa
Sotheby de Londres.
Antonio Stradivarius fue un
célebre fabricante de violines de
Italia entre los siglos diecisiete y

coleccionista, Dios no determina
nuestro valor según el dinero, las
propiedades, la posición social o
los títulos que tengamos, sino que
a cada uno nos considera su obra
maestra. Por eso envió a su Hijo
Jesucristo al mundo a dar su vida y
así pagar el precio supremo como
rescate por todos nosotros.
En sus divinas manos cualquiera de nosotros que se disponga,
pidiéndoselo, puede llegar a ser el
Stradivarius que Él, el Maestro de
maestros, ha dispuesto que sea.

World Youth Day has a San
Antonio flavor. The worldwide
pilgrimage with the Pope that
takes place every three years
and this time around it’s in
Rio De Janero, Brazil. The
gathering is an opportunity for
younger people to experience
a first-person encounter in the
universality of the Catholic
Church.
Millions of Catholics unite
for a greater cause and pray
to be touched by the spirit to
bring the teachings back to
their countries. This year, San
Antonio is involved as well and
40 pilgrims are on this voyage.
There is a verse in the Bible
that says, “Go and make Disciples of all nations,” and Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller
will lead his flock for those

so wonderful to go back home
and deepen my relationship

Jude’s Catholic Church. He is
originally from Brazil and the
prospect of returning home has
him motivated.

había un campesino que le
vendió a la Iglesia un ciruelo
para que en su madera tallaran
la efigie de un San Pedro. En
cuanto el escultor terminó de
tallar la imagen, y las autoridades eclesiásticas le dieron la
bendición, el campesino fue a
ver cómo quedó. Debido a que
conocía su humilde origen, le
pareció demasiado ornamentada, así que se encaró a la
imagen y le dijo:
Glorioso San Pedro,
yo te conocí ciruelo
y de tu fruto comí;
los milagros que tú hagas,
que me los cuelguen a mí.
De ahí la célebre frase, que en
su forma extensa dice: “Quien
te conoció ciruelo, ¿cómo te
tendrá devoción?”.
En esta anécdota popular el
campesino interpela a la imagen
de San Pedro como si fuera San
Pedro mismo, seguramente sin
darse cuenta de que en cierto
sentido podría haberse dicho
lo mismo acerca del personaje
tallado en el ciruelo, que del
ciruelo mismo.
¿Acaso no tuvo también San
Pedro un origen humilde conocido? Y al igual que el ciruelo,
¿no llegó a ocupar un puesto
destacado entre los suyos?
Entonces, ¿por qué no pudo
Dios su Creador, en la persona
de Jesucristo, haber pensado
lo mismo de él? ¿Acaso no lo
conoció en sus momentos más
débiles? Cristo pudo haberle
dicho a Simón Pedro: “Yo te
conocí ciruelo, cuando flaqueó
tu fe al intentar caminar conmigo
sobre el lago de Galilea. Yo te
conocí cuando no fuiste capaz
de quedarte despierto conmigo
mientras oraba en el huerto de
Getsemaní. Te conocí cuando
le cortaste la oreja al siervo del
sumo sacerdote porque todavía
no comprendías que yo tenía
que morir por tus pecados. Y te
conocí cuando me negaste tres
veces mientras me estaban juzgando, ¡a pesar de que te había
dicho que ibas a hacerlo y tú me
habías asegurado que eso jamás
sucedería!”.
Sin embargo, a diferencia del
campesino, que pensó mal del
ciruelo, Cristo no pudo haber
pensado mal de su discípulo
porque Pedro, en sus mejores
momentos, no quiso que otros
le rindieran homenaje a él sino
que le dieran la gloria a Cristo,
su Maestro.
Por eso, cuando sanó al hombre lisiado que pedía limosna
a la entrada del templo de Jerusalén, Pedro le dijo a la gente
asombrada que no lo mirara a
él como si por su propio poder
o virtud hubiera hecho caminar
a ese hombre, pues era Jesucristo quien lo había sanado por
completo.
Ya es hora de que sigamos
el ejemplo de Pedro, que en su
segunda carta a la iglesia universal se presenta como siervo
y apóstol de Jesucristo. Según la
tradición, su humildad lo llevó
al extremo en su martirio de
insistir en que sus verdugos lo
crucificaran con la cabeza hacia
abajo, pues no merecía morir
como su Señor. Al verlo allí
crucificado, aquel Señor de señores bien pudo haberle dicho:
Mi fiel siervo Pedro,
yo te conocí ciruelo
y tu vida nutrí;
como los milagros que hiciste
me los colgaste a mí,
ahora entra en el reposo
preparado para ti.

PLANIFICACIÓN PARA MEJORAS DE TRANSPORTE POR EL CORREDOR DE LA CARRETERA I-35
El Departamento de Transporte de Texas (TxDOT por sus siglas en inglés) llevará acabo dos talleres públicos
sobre los Estudios de Enlace - Planificación y el Medio Ambiente (PEL) para I-35. El primer taller tendrá acabo el
31 de julio de 2013 con enfoque en el estudio I-35 Bypass PEL. El siguiente taller tendrá acabo el 1 de agosto de
2013 y ofrecerá información sobre los dos estudios, I-35 Bypass PEL y I-35 Central PEL. El propósito de los talleres es para solicitar mayor aportación por parte de la comunidad sobre las necesidades de transporte y mejoras
potenciales para la carretera I-35 en partes de los condados de Bexar y Guadalupe.
Los estudios I-35 PEL se iniciaron en diciembre de 2012. El área de estudio incluye porciones de los candados de
Bexar y Guadalupe dentro y alrededor de la ciudad de San Antonio, Texas. Carreteras dentro del área de estudio
incluye: Loop 410, I-10, Loop 1604 y I-35, así como carreteras radiales incluyendo SH 151, US 90, SH 16, US 281

Charola’s ha destacado por su comida internacional

Tuve una cena esta semana y
se llevó a cabo en el restaurante
Charola’s. Al entrar al estacionamiento, ubicado en una pequeña
plaza comercial del 6734 San
Pedro, pensé en un restaurante
de comida corrida, rápida y sin
mucho glamour, pero mi visita
me dejó una opinión muy distinta.
A pesar de ser pequeño, este restaurante es bien conocido por muchas personas de San Antonio, en
especial por su fusión de sabores
en su rica comida internacional,
mexicana y cubana.
Al entrar al local pude darme
cuenta de que su ambiente es
amistoso, relajado, semi elegante
y muy romántico.
El mesero, quien resultó ser el
dueño y chef del lugar, nos trajo
como aperitivo unas empanadas
de carne molida, de cilantro,
queso y pollo con rajas. Las
empanadas se acompañaban de
una salsa picante con un sabor
a chile de árbol. Estas fueron
deliciosas.
Después, ordené una sangría
para esperar a pasar por el bufet,
ya que ese día el lugar contaba
con un menú especial.
Para comenzar me serví una
ensalada con aderezo de cilantro.
El aderezo tenía un sabor exquisito y perfecto para ser combinado
con la ensalada.
Después, una crema de pollo
con algo de verduras, y como
plato fuerte un pollo con rajas,
arroz con verduras y una quesadilla con tortilla de maíz recién
hecha. Todo estuvo delicioso.
La combinación de mis guarniciones suena algo curioso y poco
combinable, sin embargo esa es la
clave del lugar, pues cuenta con
un poco de cada país.
Charola’s cuenta con un especial del día, y puede preguntar por
este a su llegada. Tiene un precio
de $9.99 por persona.
El lugar es perfecto para una
cita en pareja o para tener una
rica cena acompañada de una
copa de vino.
La atención al cliente es muy
buena, pues el encargado del
lugar se cerciora de que todos
tengan sus bebidas a tiempo y de
que sus platillos se encuentren en
buena temperatura.
Charola’s tendrá su evento de
paella y flamenco el día 27 de
julio, y tendrá un costo de $39
por persona. EL boleto incluye
comida y bebida (todo lo que
desee consumir). El menú incluye gazpacho, ensalada mixta,
ensaladilla rusa, paella, empanadas, tortilla española, tapas y
un postre típico español. Para

Hip-Hop meets Conjunto in I could live at LIVE AQUA
symposium and free concert

The music of Texas is very
unique. On Thursday, July 26 from
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Institute of
Texan Cultures, UTSA Assistant
Professor of Bicultural-Bilingual
Studies, Marco Cervantes will open
a concert on the blending of African and Mexican-American music
traditions and it’s free to the public.
Christian Clark, senior program
coordinator of the Department of
Education and Interpretation with
the Institute, said that every year
the department puts on a three-day
intensive workshop open to K-12
teachers who are able to earn professional development hours. He
talked about this year’s workshop.
“This year the theme is teaching
through music and culture called
Sounds on the Margins. It allows
a collaboration teachers can use to
work together,” Clark said.
He also explained how their
visiting scholar program which

both styles of music and will share

“African-Americans and Mexican-Americans in Texas have
been engaged in unique cultural
fusions that indicate how both
groups, while marginalized, maintained a sense of identity through
transcultural music performance,”
Cervantes said.
The concert will conclude the
symposium. Cervantes is a musician and rapper and is also known
by his stage name the “Mexican
Stepgrandfather” and will be followed by DJ J.J. Lopez, members
of Bombasta, and Andrea “Vocab”
Sanderson
“A panel discussion (about the
overlap between both cultures) will
occur before and also during the
concert,” Clark said.
Clark added that the concert and
symposium received some very
generous donations from Alamo
Music, Humanities Texas and
Helen and Scott Bryan. Alamo
Music also provided instruments
and Helen and Scott Bryan’s donation will go to stipends for teachers.

a facial treatment and I was floored
by how amazing it made me feel.

five gorgeous restaurants (soon to
be seven) and two smaller snack
type areas which include a deli and
a sushi bar. AQUA is dedicated to
satisfying any taste palette, which
can range from Italian to seafood,
in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.
My absolute favorite was Mb. If
Mb was located in San Antonio, I’d
be in heaven. From duck ravioli to
perfect steak dishes, the Latin cuisine at Mb was extraordinary. Chef
Eric De Maeyer did a superb job
emphasizing the use of local ingredients and producing an elaborate
yet fun menu in every restaurant. Of
course, if you’d rather stay in your
comfy and spacious room, there’s
always 24-hour room service which
is included.
Now, if you are a fan of good
premium drinks while on vacation,
there’s plenty of that too. There are
five elegant bars throughout the
hotel with my favorite being Egos
Bar. Egos is cool, trendy, and has a
great vibe. Being a bar owner, I can
say that the designers did a terrific
job at creating inviting and luxurious spaces to be entertained during
your stay.
Okay, let’s face it; you’re obviously going to Cancun to enjoy the
warm Mexican sun, right? Me too.
The crystal-clear pools, which are
feet from the postcard perfect ocean,
are to die for. You could literally
stay out by the pool all day and
order food to your private poolside
cabana. As for me, I hung out by
the pool and ordered drinks most of
the day and ate lunch at Azur, the
beachside Mediterranean restaurant.

La semana pasada, durante
una entrevista en televisión,
desenmascaré una verdad que
nadie se ha atrevido a decir,
muchos quedaron sorprendidos y
otros enojados. Las sorprendidas
fueron las mujeres, que siempre
se han preguntado: ¿Por qué los
hombres son infieles? Los enfurecidos fueron aquellos hombres
que son o han sido infieles.
Mi revelación fue basada en
un estudio que condujo la Uni-
versidad de Londres donde se
descubrió que mientras más alto
es el coeficiente intelectual de un
hombre, más leal es a su pareja,
por el contrario mientras más
bajo, más infiel es.
Desde que abrí la boca para
decir que el hombre entre más
“bruto” más infiel es he recibido
cientos de correos electrónicos,
cartas y comentarios en mis redes
sociales, unos insultándome y
otros felicitándome.
Estoy consciente de que es un
tema delicado y algo atrevido,
juzgar la inteligencia de un individuo de acuerdo a su fidelidad.
Pero lo cierto es que antes de que
se destapara este estudio, ya muchas habían catalogado a los infieles como tontos. Y me incluyo
en este grupo porque conozco
varios casos que lo certifican.
Tengo una amiga muy allegada
quien es bella, cariñosa, inteligente, trabajadora y hasta experta
en artes culinarias; sin embargo,
su ex esposo fue capaz de “po-
nerle los cuernos” por varios años
con una mujer sin clase, grotesca,
¡y para colmo interesada! Recuerdo
las primeras palabras que salieron de mi boca cuando ella me
confesó la traición: “¿Acaso ese
hombre es bruto?”
Según el estudio de esta Universidad inglesa lo que sucede
es que cuando un hombre inteligente se topa con una tentación,
analizará el peligro de la misma
y tomará en cuenta que puede
perder su hogar; el respeto de
su familia y una gran mujer. Y
así concluye que no vale la pena
correr el riesgo de perder algo
tan valioso solo por una aventura. Mientras que un hombre no
tan inteligente, probablemente
cometerá la infidelidad porque no
analiza las graves consecuencias.
En conclusión , si eres inteligente,
¡no seas infiel!

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts
Center has taken over the administration of the Macondo
workshops with the blessing
of its founder and the board of
the Macondo Foundation. The
upcoming event scheduled for
July 26-28 will mark the first
meeting for the Macondistas at
the Guadalupe.
The planned summit includes
a one-day workshop, administrative meetings to prepare
for a full workshop in summer
of 2014 and an Evening of
Readings on Saturday, July 27,
which will include memoirs,

Film critics Angela Covo and Dennis Ayotte, Jr. bring you the truth about Hollywood’s current offerings every week. This weekend, the duo brings you their takes on this week’s summer films:

Covo’s take on “RIPD”:
This film is just a lot of fun
with a great sci-fi yarn. The
most apt description I can think
of is “Ghostbuster” meets “Men
in Black.” The only not-so-good
thing I would say about this film
is that the monsters came off as
dated special effects. Other than
that, if you want a fun cinematic
experience – this is a good
choice for the weekend.
Great chases, an intriguing
story and stellar performances
from Ryan Reynolds and Jeff
Bridges equals an enjoyable
summer afternoon in the theater … it sure beats our triple
digit heat. And these two make
quite the pair. Bridges plays a
“lawman” from 1900, Ryan a
modern-day cop. Their individual character performances
are great – and the chemistry
between the two is outstanding.
Without revealing a thing
before you see this film, just
note that it’s a heavenly situation with very unexpected twists
and turns, punctuated by terrific
comic relief.
“RIPD” is no intellectual
indie – it tells a story, delivers action, fun and even a little
suspense – and thoroughly entertains. My guess is this will far
outdo some critics’ predictions
of “badboxofficereturnitis” this
weekend. Go see it. You will
laugh and have fun and be pleasantly surprised. Also, no one
should miss Bridges’ hilarious
performance.
The film is rated PG-13 and

retired operatives are all in for
another chance to save the world.
The mission takes Frank and his
motley crew to Europe – where
we get great views of Paris and
London, and Russia.
The star-studded cast delivers
stellar performances and they play
off each other brilliantly. There
is no question that 68-year-old
Helen Mirren makes the future
look bright for all women: she
is dazzling and sexy in this film
as she comes out with all guns
blazing.
It’s simply worth seeing to see
this cast have so much fun on
the set – Willis and Mirren, John
Malkovich (whose one-liners will
make you laugh out loud) and
Mary Louise Parker are terrific.
And you’ll get to see Anthony
Hopkins deal with poetic justice,
too!
This group knows their busi-
ness – and it does get a little silly
but the overall effect is just plain
fun. Moreover, some of the jokes
are very sophisticated. Worth
a look for fans of Bruce Willis
and Helen Mirren – who are both
fabulous in the film. I’ll recommend this film for those who
enjoy action-comedy – it truly is
very funny.
The movie is also pretty violent
but is rated PG-13. It runs for
almost 2 hours.

En ese momento me quise morir
porque me sentí vieja y sin poder
compararme con la joven con quien
salía mí esposo.
Cuando mi esposo vio a mi hijo
fue corriendo hacia él y le dijo que
si decía algo, lo único que causaría
sería un divorcio y problemas
graves que eran innecesarios. Comenzaron a discutir y mi esposo
golpeó a mi hijo en la mejilla.
Cuando llegó mi hijo a casa lo vi
sangrado y además estaba llorando
y se podían ver los nervios en su
cara.
Ahora ya han pasado dos semanas y desde que supe de la situación
me he sentido con ganas de decirle a
mi esposo que necesito el divorcio,
más que nada por mi hijo porque
él trató de defenderme y no podría
dejarlo pasar por desapercibido.
Además de eso, no me siento bien
al estar en la cama con ese hombre
que ahora desconozco. Por favor
ayúdame y dime qué debo hacer al
respecto. ¿Crees que debo pedirle
el divorcio o mejor me callo y me
espero a que pasen las cosas?

Definitivamente no puedes callar este problema, y mucho menos
sabiendo que tu hijo tuvo la valentía
de enfrentar a su padre por defender
tu dignidad. Aun así, lo más importante es tu felicidad, y no creo que
esto sea algo que te hace feliz a ti.
El simple hecho de ver a tu hijo
desangrándose e implorándote con
nervios en la cara para que dejaras a
su padre es más que suficiente para
creer que lo correcto es tomar cartas
sobre el asunto.
Lo ideal no es un divorcio, especialmente porque todos queremos
casarnos solo una vez y hacer
nuestras vidas con esa persona que
conocimos cuando éramos jóvenes,
sin embargo cuando alguien rompe
la barrera y hace a un lado el respeto
que se le debe de tener a los demás,
es en ese momento cuando debes
reaccionar y pensar en ti, en tus hijos
y en el bienestar de ambos.
Debes hablar con tu esposo y
tomar una decisión firme. Si deseas
estar con él es porque vas a darle
vuelta a la página y vas a olvidar
absolutamente todo lo que pasó.
Pero si decides divorciarte, entonces
tendrás que hacerle saber, y tú por
tú lado, encontrar la manera de salir
adelante con el apoyo de tus hijos.

Jenni Rivera, fallecida en
diciembre pasado en un accidente aéreo en México, obtuvo cuatro premios de manera

y Yandel, cerró el evento con
“Hablé de ti”, el tema que interpreta en solitario.
Wisin presentó uno de los
momentos más esperados y
emotivos de la noche, la entrega
del premio Icono Mundial a Jennifer López, honor que el año
anterior recibió Marc Anthony,
exmarido de López.
Después de una recopilación
de algunos de los momentos
cumbre de su carrera, tanto en
el cine como la música, Jennifer
agradeció el aplauso y el amor
casi palpable del público con
lágrimas en los ojos y se dirigió
a sus fans en español en unas
emotivas palabras.
“Al ver todas sus caras hermosas me siento muy afortunada de estar aquí esta noche.
Lo que siempre he querido
hacer con mi vida es entretener
y ser una buena persona”, dijo
la artista, que tuvo que detener
su discurso en varias ocasiones
para secarse las lágrimas.
“Si los he inspirado o si he
hecho su mundo más divertido
entonces todo vale la pena. Recibo este homenaje con mucha
humildad”, concluyó en medio de
los gritos de “¡J.Lo!” del público.
Jennifer López recibió su segundo premio de la noche en la
categoría Actriz Que se Roba la
Pantalla, que dedicó a su familia,
a sus bailarines y a su gran amigo
Pitbull, con una promesa “Pitbull, hemos hecho tanto juntos,
y nos queda más por hacer, mi
hermano”.
El español Antonio Banderas
se hizo el galardón denominado
¡Qué Actorazo!, al tiempo que la
colombiana Shakira también fue
reconocida con el premio ¡Qué
Rico Que Se Mueve!
Por su parte, el actor mexicano
Eugenio Derbez recibió el premio
“Supernova” en reconocimiento
de su carrera artística que en el
pasado recibieron Shakira, Maná,
Ricardo Arjona y Antonio Banderas, entre otros.
Después de un montaje de algunos de sus mejores momentos
como comediante, Derbez hizo
reír al público con un discurso
de agradecimiento que comenzó
regañando a los ganadores que
usan el momento para promover
sus nuevos proyectos, y terminó
promoviendo su nuevo filme,
“Instructions Not Included”.
