Summer is on the horizon but it is not too early to prepare for the start of another great school year.
We are so pleased to welcome new families to our warm and supportive community, and we look
forward to the excitement of having everyone back on campus in the fall.
At MBS, we pride ourselves on having an open community and find that new families quickly feel at
home and at ease. In that spirit, we have provided a guide to help ensure a smooth and comfortable
transition to a new school year.
While this publication was designed with our new families in mind, it also serves as a great refresher
for our current families. I invite you to take some time to review its contents. Should you have any

information.

There are many resources for current news and information!
1. MBS Monday
Every Monday you will receive MBS Monday (our weekly eBulletin) in your inbox. This email
is a vital source of information and is the best way to stay up to date. MBS Monday lists
need-to-know information for the week, such as announcements, upcoming dates and events,
and more. It is a must read!
A test email will be sent to all registered portal email addresses at 3 p.m. on the first day of school. If you do not receive an MBS Monday in your email, or if you’d like to add an email address to the distribution list, please send an email to Steve Patchett at [email protected].

4. Calendars
The School Calendar and the Athletics Calendar have features that allow users to set up alerts for upcoming events. This is a useful way to have reminders sent to your phone so you don’t miss an event or change in schedule. Alerts can be set up directly at the calendars when logged in. If you
need detailed instructions on how to set up alerts, please check the Tech Tips section found on
page 36.

Recommended Course Listings Available, July 22, 2016 (Grades 6-10); August 5, 2016 (Grades
11-12): The MBS Registrar distributes suggested courses for all 2016/2017 MBS students. The online
bookstore opens and students are able to purchase books for 2016/2017 courses.
Crimson Week, August 22-26, 2016: All MBS fall athletes come on campus to officially begin fall

their parents gather on campus for orientation. After an hour together parents leave and students
get to enjoy a day filled with time in their advisories, team building activities, a scavenger hunt,

Freshmen Retreat, September 1, 2016 – 7:30 AM – 7:00 PM: 9th grade students head off campus to
Camp Bernie to enjoy a day outside filled with ice breakers and team building activities.

There are ten important to-dos that you should check off before the first day of school.
1. Register/Update your information with the Honeywell Instant Alert System
Weather happens, schedules change, buses run late. MBS uses the Honeywell Instant Alert system
to notify of school closings or schedule changes. With the system, parents can choose to receive
notifications by email, text, and/or phone call. It is imperative that all new families register with the
system and returning families check their existing accounts to ensure that all contact information is up
to date at https://instantalert.honeywell.com.

2. Review/Update your Profile on the Parent Portal
You can update your profile information by logging into the Parent Portal at www.mbs.net. Select “Update
your profile”. A new window will open, allowing you to modify information, such as your phone number,
mailing address, and email address. Please note, each parent has an individual profile that is accessible
through his or her unique username. When updating profiles, please use different email addresses for
each parent. Also, please enter a home number and cell phone number for each parent. Our online health
form and re-enrollment systems rely on this information to connect to your Parent Portal account. Don’t
forget to hit “Update Profile” at the bottom of the window once you’ve made your changes. For more
information about logging in, please refer to the Parent Portal section (page 33).
If you would like to make significant changes (e.g., separation, divorce, second address) to your
household information, please send an email to [email protected].
3. Submit your completed Health Forms online
The letter from the nurse with instructions, containing a link to our Magnus Health Portal can be
found in the Parent Portal under the “Enrollment and Forms” tab.
4. Update your calendar
There is always something going on at Morristown-Beard School! Make sure you update your calendar
with the important dates found in this guide.

5. Order Textbooks
Textbooks can be ordered through K12studentdirect.com, which is the MBS affiliated online
bookstore. Students in grades 6 through 10 are able to access their course list along with course codes
to be used in the online bookstore. The link to the online bookstore and ordering instructions will be
provided with the recommended course listing.
6. Register your iPad
In order to access the Internet while on campus, your child must register their iPad with the School using
their FirstClass login. To do so, click on the School Information/Student Comment link in the Parent
Portal, then select “Register iPad”. If you need assistance with this process, please contact Caitlin SkoboTrought at [email protected].
7. Visit the MBS Bookstore
Our School Bookstore is located on the ground floor of Beard Hall. The bookstore sells school supplies,
some textbooks, and MBS apparel. During the school year, the bookstore is open from 7:30 AM until
3:30 PM.
8. Purchase school supplies
All MBS students are required to have a charged iPad with them at school. Answers to frequently asked
questions about the iPad program, including the recommended iPad specifications, required accessories
and apps can be found in the MBS Technology section on page 30 of this packet.
Middle School
In addition to an iPad and the required accessories and apps, all Middle Schooler students are
asked to purchase additional school supplies. See the appendix of this packet for 6th, 7th, and 8th
grade supply lists. Each Middle School student is assigned a locker near their advisory, and these
lockers are used to store books and personal items. Middle School students typically carry their
books in backpacks. Separate gym lockers are located in the athletics facility, and will be assigned
when students are taking gym.

UPPER SCHOOL
Upper School students also are required to have a charged iPad with them at school each day. There
is no list of school supplies that is distributed for Upper School students before the start of school.
Instead, teachers will indicate needed supplies during the first week of school. Upper School
students do not use lockers and carry their books from class to class.
9. Familiarize yourself with the Family Handbook
The Family Handbook is an excellent resource for information. Most questions you might have are
answered in this must-read resource. The Family Handbook can be accessed by logging into the Parent
Portal.
10. Summer Reading
The summer reading lists for all grades can be found in the Appendix of this packet. Summer reading
discussions will be held the first week of school. Now is a great time to get reading!

Upper School Dress Code
Students are expected to dress appropriately for school. Students should wear clothing that reflects their
desire to be a part of a college preparatory environment and demonstrates their respect for themselves,
their peers and the School as a whole. The following dress code policy is intended to provide the community with guidelines for appropriate School attire. In the end, it is entirely within the discretion of
the School faculty and administration to determine whether a student is dressed within the spirit of
these guidelines.
Pants
Students may wear corduroys, khakis or other dress slacks. Pants may not be ripped or “distressed” and
must fit properly (not too loose or too tight). Tights, leggings or other types of hosiery must be accompanied by a fingertip length or longer top or dress. Jeans, cargo pants, sweatpants, yoga pants, spandex
and other athletic pants are prohibited.
Skirts & Dresses
Skirts and dresses are permissible provided that they are not too tight fitting and that they are of an
appropriate length. As a guideline, skirts and dresses should not be more than 4 inches above the knee.
Necklines must be modest and appropriate for school.
Shirts
Boys must wear collared shirts, either short-sleeved “polo” shirts or long sleeved button down shirts.
Shirts must be tucked in. Girls must wear either collared shirts or other appropriate dressy shirts. Shirts
need to have sleeves. Shirts without sleeves need to be worn with a cardigan sweater. Necklines must be
modest and appropriate for the school environment. Sweaters or MBS half-zip pullovers may be worn
over dress code shirts or turtlenecks. Sweatshirts of all kinds are prohibited (even as outerwear).
Footwear
Students may wear shoes, boots, or sandals provided that they are in good condition (no holes and
relatively clean). Sneakers are prohibited, except during physical education classes. Flip-flops and other
beach, pool or shower shoes are also prohibited.

Hats
Hats may not be worn indoors (with the exception of head coverings worn in religious observance.)
Hair and Grooming
Students must be clean-shaven. Hair must be neatly groomed and of a natural shade. No visible body
piercing jewelry is allowed, with the exception of earrings for girls. No visible tattoos are allowed.
Dress-Up Days
A full list of dress-up days will be published at the beginning of each year. On designated dress-up days,
students will be expected to wear more formal attire.
Boys must wear a jacket and tie (knotted properly to cover the top button) with dress pants and
dress shoes.
Girls must wear an appropriate dress, skirt or dress pants (not khakis, corduroys or dressy leggings).
Skirts and dress pants must be worn with collared shirts or other appropriately dressy shirts and
dress shoes. Dresses, skirts and necklines must be modest and appropriate for school.
Dress-Down Days
Most Fridays are designated dress-down days. On designated dress-down days, casual attire is permitted.
Nevertheless, clothing must be neat and tidy and free of holes. It may not display any writing or images
that are offensive to others, or that advertise drugs, tobacco or alcohol. Shorts, skirts and necklines must
be modest and appropriate for school. Clothing must fit properly (not too loose or too tight).

Girls Dress Code
The Middle School Girls Dress Code is intended to be comfortable, casual and neat. Students are required
to be in Dress Code at all times while on campus, except during dress-down days, during gym class, and
after the start of the sports period.
Shirts
Girls must wear a solid color collared shirt. They may be short/long-sleeved “polo” shirts, short/long sleeved
button down shirts, or turtlenecks. Shirts must be tucked in and properly buttoned. No denim allowed.
Pants
Khaki, navy blue, or black. In the same style as chinos or dress pants offered by Lands’ End. Pants must be
worn at or over the hip with a belt.
Skirts
Khaki or navy blue skirts must fall no higher than 3” from the top of the knee when standing.
Shoes
Shoes must be non-athletic shoe style. Socks or tights must be worn with shoes. Tie-shoes must be properly
tied at all times. Boots may be worn, but they must be properly tied. No flip-flops, slipper style shoes, or
platform shoes (no soles thicker than 1 inch and no heels higher than 2 inches.) Sandals must have a back
strap and may be worn without socks.
Sweaters
Knit sweaters must be solid in color and may have a zipper or buttons. No hoods. Students are permitted
to wear one of the following outerwear options indoors: Any color full zip or half zip monogrammed
fleeces sold at Lands’ End or MBS monogrammed fleeces and non-sweatshirt cotton pullovers sold in the
bookstore. Outerwear such as non-monogrammed fleeces, team jackets, and coats are not to be worn indoors.
Accessories
Female students may wear earrings, jewelry, and make-up. However, such accessories must not present a
hazard to the wearer or be a distraction to other students. No sunglasses, unnecessary accessories, or hats.
Dress-Down Days
On dress-down days, girls may wear blue jeans, shorts, sneakers, t-shirts, shirts with logos, and other such
clothing. No spaghetti straps, strapless tops or leggings. Dress-down clothing must be clean, modest, suited
to the season, and in good taste.

Tuesday, September 6
Convocation and Community Day - Dress-Up Day
This is our official first day of school. On this day, students will meet with their advisory and then as a
full School community to celebrate the opening of the school year.
The first day of school is a Dress-Up Day. Please dress according to the Morristown-Beard School’s
Dress Code for Dress-Up Days. Guidelines for the Dress Code and a list of Dress-Up Days can be found
in the Family Handbook. These dates are also marked on the School Calendar.
Wednesday, September 7
First Day of Classes - Regular Dress Code
All-School
Students should arrive at school by 8:05 AM. Buses will be running. Breakfast is available for purchase
in the cafeteria starting at 7:30 AM.
Bring a charged iPad, books, and school supplies.
The Parents Association Welcome Parent Coffee begins at 8:00 AM in Alumni House. All parents are
invited and encouraged to attend. Parking is available in the Frelinghuysen Arboretum (accessible via
Hanover Avenue). Note that these are the only lots open to guest parking during school hours.

In April 2016, MBS proudly unveiled an ambitious five-year, $20
million comprehensive campaign named Transforming Our Future. This
comprehensive campaign will raise funds for a state-of-the-art math and
science building as well as renovations to the Simon Athletic Center,
Rooke Pool, and other capital projects. The campaign will also seek
support for scholarship and endowment, two priorities that are integral to
the School’s long-term success. Finally, MBS will continue its communitywide efforts to sustain and build the Morristown-Beard Fund—the

The MB Fund exists for one reason only: to improve the MBS student
experience. Every dollar donated fuels the expansion of academic and
curricular initiatives, arts and athletics programs, and student leadership
and service opportunities. While special fundraising for capital projects,

endowment, and scholarship bring significant long-term benefits to our

School, the MB Fund’s consistent support of today’s student experience is
vital to our students’ intellectual and emotional growth and our School’s
financial health. The MB Fund helps close the gap between the cost of educating an MBS student and
his/her tuition.
Scholarship
Another important priority for MBS remains scholarship support for students with demonstrated
financial need. While annual investment income from the endowment does help limit tuition increases,
the overall affordability of an independent school education continues to be a challenging question
facing schools throughout the nation. Additional, related issues such as diversity and inclusion within
the composition of the student body amplify the growing need for scholarship support.

recognized the need for a new, innovative math and science facility that will provide the tools and
environment needed by students to study a world dramatically transformed by globalization, scientific
advancement, and technology.
This new math and science building over 25,000 square feet—a critical component in the School’s
strategic plan—is the cornerstone of the Transforming Our Future campaign and the final jewel in the
crown that is the MBS campus. With input from math and science faculty, the $12.6 million building
features a flexible and adaptable design.

Dear Parents,
I hope this letter finds you excited about your upcoming years at Morristown-Beard School and the role
athletics will play. I am looking forward to working with all of you over the course of the next four years.
The fall season will be upon us before we know it. I would like to take this opportunity to give you
some information you can reference in the upcoming months.
Our fall season will begin for most sports on Monday, August 15th. These pre-season practices will
be scheduled individually by each team and will be detailed in letters from the coaches. Our annual
Crimson Week will be held August 22nd through August 26th. During this week, the MBS Athletic
Department sponsors lunch Monday through Thursday for all student-athletes, and we are excited to
partner with the Parents Association for a Crimson BBQ during that week as well. Crimson Week is
an opportunity to celebrate all fall athletes. This is a great way for all teams to socialize and kick off our
fall season.
As each fall team has their own unique schedules, it is vital for you to read the coaches letters,
which will be posted on our website under Athletics > Resources & Links > Coaches Letters starting
June 13, 2016. These letters will provide you with detailed information regarding practice times and
equipment needs specific to your sport. Although attendance at preseason practices is not mandatory,
it is strongly suggested that each athlete take part in all preseason practices in order to best prepare for
the season. This is the time for our coaches to evaluate the skill level of all players. All ninth graders
and new students are also expected to attend these practices.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to Morristown-Beard School and Middle School Athletics. I am looking forward to working
with you and your children during your time here in our Middle School.
As fall is right around the corner, I would like to take this opportunity to give you some information
about the upcoming months and the athletic program.
The Middle School fall sports season will begin shortly after the beginning of school—there are no
summer athletic commitments for Middle School student-athletes. We will have fall sports sign-ups
during the first week of school and will be offering: Field Hockey (Girls), Soccer (Boys and Girls),
Tennis (Girls), Flag Football (Co-ed), and Cross Country (Co-ed). We have a no-cut policy, so all
student-athletes may play the sport of their choice.
This year the Middle School has adopted a new policy where each student will be required to
participate in 2 of our 3 athletics seasons. In the winter and spring we will be offering a fitness class for
those who are not interested in team sports.
The fall schedule for each sport can be found at http://www.nwjerseyac.com. These schedules may
change slightly over the summer, but will become final on July 1st.

Greetings,
As Head Librarian, I would like to welcome you to the MBS community. The Library is one of the
centers of student life on campus. Our students use the Library in a variety of ways: as a gathering place,
as a study space, as a workspace for individual assignments or group projects. As you will soon discover,
the MBS Library is always a space and place filled with activity!
As you prepare for the new school year, I’d like to introduce you to our Summer Reading Program.
Unlike many other schools, at MBS we want to give our students as much choice as possible when it
comes to summer reading. We want them to enjoy the experience of reading and the best way to do
that is to let them choose your their books from our extensive list. When classes start in the fall, we
will gather in discussion groups with our books’ sponsors—a teacher or staff member—and share
our responses to the books we’ve read. In addition, this year we have added a new feature to summer
reading: many of our seniors and juniors are going to assist the faculty and staff as discussion leaders.
Please review the reading list in the appendix of this package and have your student choose his or her
top three choices and email them to me, [email protected], no later than June 30. Send the choices in
early as summer reading groups are formed first come, first serve and we try to keep the groups relatively
small. Once I receive the requests, the student will be notified shortly afterwards as to which discussion
group he or she will join. Keep in mind that all students are required to read at least two books over the
summer, so please use the attached summary to help choose other titles.

Dear Parents,
Technology and education have gone hand in hand over the past few decades. We at Morristown-Beard
School want to prepare our students to utilize all that technology has to offer and help ready them for
life outside of MBS. As part of our approach, we have an iPad 1-to-1 program in which each student is
required to have an iPad. Having an iPad in the hands of each student helps to enrich and enhance the
learning experience at MBS.
To help you prepare for the upcoming school year, I have included some useful information about our
iPad 1-to-1 program. Included are iPad requirements and recommendations for purchasing the iPad,
as well as information about using the iPad on the MBS campus. In order for your students to be able
to use their iPad on our network, they must register their device with the school. MBS also provides
required apps to your student, free of charge, through an online enrollment process. Steps for both the
registration and enrollment are included in this letter and can also be found on the Parent Technology
Tab within the Parent Portal on the School’s website.
With technology use comes a large responsibility and we want all of our students to be safe online.
Our Technology Acceptable Use Policy is in place to make sure that students are using technology
appropriately and safely. The Internet is a very powerful tool if used correctly. To ensure that they
know how to navigate their online world, I will be speaking with all Freshman and Juniors over the
course of the year about digital citizenship. This program will help guide the students to ethical and
safe participation in the online world. Our Technology Acceptable Use Policy as well as our Social
Media Policy can be found on the School’s website. Go to Academics, then select Technology in the
Curriculum.

When it comes to using social media, one must THINK before posting.
I should ask myself: Is what I am posting…

• Necessary?
• Kind?
Online bullying and harassment issues are taken very seriously. Reported instances of alleged abuse will
be examined by the appropriate administrative personnel who will determine if abuse has occurred and
if disciplinary action is warranted.
Photos or videos taken during the school day of faculty, staff, or students may not be posted without
proper consent.
The School reserves the right to discipline any student, including the possibility of expulsion, for
behavior that reflects in a negative way on the School, no matter where or when such behavior occurs.

The Parent Portal is a password-protected customized dashboard on the MBS website that connects you
to important school information. The Parent Portal contains family specific profile information, which
includes your address(es), phone number(s), and email(s).
It is important that you keep this contact information current. All parents are responsible to
input any changes to your personal profile, so that you continue to receive all school mailings and
announcements.
New families should have received login information by regular mail. If you did not receive this
information, please send an email to [email protected].
Please take a moment to log into the Parent Portal to verify that your information is correct, and
that your login credentials work. If you have any problems logging in, please email Tiffany Zuber
at [email protected].
To log in to the parent portal:
Go to www.mbs.net
Click the “Log In” button located in the upper right hand corner.
Enter your username and password, then click “login.”

How to access the Family Directory
The Family Directory currently exists in two formats: “live” online at www.mbs.net/familydirectory
and in PDF format. The “live” version has the most current information—the most recent updates and
changes in addresses, phone numbers, and emails. The PDF version is a “snapshop” of the directory list
and it is updated periodically throughout the year.
In the “live” format, use the “Keywords” feature at www.mbs.net/familydirectory to search for a parent
by first or last name. You may also access the “live” directory by logging into the Parent Portal and
clicking the link under School Information.
If you have a need to download the PDF format to your mobile device (phone or tablet), click the PDF
link found on the Family Directory page or in the Parent Portal. Doing so will enable you to view the
Family Directory PDF directly from your iBooks—no login required.

Search for an email address on the Faculty/Staff Directory
1. Access the Faculty/Staff Directory at www.mbs.net/facultystaffdirectory.
2. Use the “Keywords” function to search by first or last name for the faculty or staff member you would
like to contact.
3. Select “profile”. The email address will appear under the section entitled “Contact Information”.
How to Manage/Set Up Calendar Alerts
Our School Calendar and Athletics Calendar allow you to set up alerts for calendar events. These alerts
can be sent to either your email, your phone, or to both. Note that you must be logged in to set up alerts.

You will now receive real-time alerts when any School Calendar events have been cancelled, postponed,
or changed.
To enable your mobile device to receive text alerts, select the “Alerts” button and then select “My
Subscriptions”. You will then be prompted to “Add Text Enabled Phone”. Select that button, then “Add
New Phone” or “Enable Existing Phone Number”.
After saving that information, select “Request Code”. A code will be sent to your phone, which you can
then enter in the field provided. Select “Verify”. You’re good to go!

MBS Technology Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who is required to have an iPad for Fall 2016?
A: All students, new and returning, grades 6 through 12, are required to have iPads.
Q: Where should I purchase my iPad?
A: We designed the iPad program to be as flexible as possible for our families. You may purchase your
iPad at the Apple Store, Best Buy or any other vendor you choose.
Q: Am I entitled to any special discounts when purchasing the iPad?
A: The Apple Store may provide an education discount if you provide a school ID or acceptance letter to MBS.
Q: What if I already own an iPad?
A: Great! If you already have an iPad 2 or later, you are set for the 2016-2017 academic year.
Q: What version of the iPad is required?
A: For the 2014-2015 academic year, the iPad 2 or later is required. The iPad mini is also an adequate
option.
Q: I understand that MBS is not requiring a specific version for next year, but can MBS make any
suggestions or recommendations?
A: Sure! First, with regard to GB-size, we suggest at least the 32GB WiFi version. (We worry that the
16GB version would not offer enough storage space and could be quite limiting.) Secondly, an iPad 2
or newer, or an iPad mini would be an ideal choice. The students will need to use a camera as well as be
able to mirror their iPad in class, and need an iPad 2 or newer, or an iPad mini, to do so.
Q: What’s the difference between WiFi and WiFi+3G?
A: WiFi allows a user to access the internet via established wireless networks. WiFi+ 3G allows a user
to access the internet via not only these established wireless networks, but also through Verizon and
AT&T’s cellular service; the WiFi+3G service requires the purchase of an additional data plan through
Verizon or AT&T. Because MBS has a dedicated wireless iPad network, WiFi+3G is not needed.
