With so much hype going
on about Proposition 6, many
are forgetting about Propositions 1 and 4. If you are a veteran or close to someone that is,
then keep reading as both these
propositions were created with
veterans’ needs in mind.
Proposition 1, if passed would
allow Gold Star Spouses (those
married to service members) a
100 percent property tax exemption if their significant others
were killed in action.
Proposition 4 is aimed at
disabled vets who were given
houses through charities. Unfortunately, many veterans are
at risk of losing the home if they
cannot pay property taxes. Prop
4 would grant a tax exemption
relative to the veteran’s level of
disability. If there is a veteran
80 percent disabled, he would
receive an 80 percent exemption.
One man with such needs is
Shilo Harris. After 9/11, Harris
enlisted in the service, where he
was dispatched to Iraq twice. On
his second trip, he was severely
injured by a makeshift bomb,
killing three of his men and
burning over 40 percent of his
body. He came back home, and
was given a house to accommodate his needs, but he is in
danger of losing it if he can’t
pay his taxes.
Even those that serve our
country are victimized by taxes.
“It was only by God’s grace
that I am here today. It takes a
very strong person to support
their loved ones going off to war,
knowing they can lose them in
the blink of an eye. If I would
have died, I would have known
that my family was well taken
care of,” Harris said.
A number of Texas lawmakers including State Senators
Leticia Van de Putte and Donna
Campbell, State Representative
Jose Menendez, and VFW State
Commander Sylvia Sanchez are
backing Harris up by encouraging people to go out, vote and
say YES to Props 1 and 4.

mejores conductores

La Administración Nacional
de la Seguridad del Tráfico en
las Carreteras (NHTSA, por sus
siglas en inglés) llevó a cabo la
campaña “5 para Conducir”, que
planea reducir la tasa de mortalidad en los adolescentes.
La Semana Nacional de Seguridad Juvenil finalizó el 25 de
octubre, sin embargo los organizadores buscan crear conciencia en la comunidad joven para
reducir la tasa de mortalidad en
los adolescentes.
“Yo creo que es muy importante que los jóvenes presten
atención al volante porque los
accidentes suceden cuando menos
se imaginan y un descuido podría
cambiarles la vida a ellos o a otras
personas afectadas”, afirmó María
Guadalupe Salas, madre de tres
hijos adolescentes.
La campaña es una oportunidad
para que los padres de familia
hagan entender a los jóvenes sobre lo peligroso que es distraerse
mientras conducen.
“Un amigo perdió la vida mientras conducía a la escuela en
la mañana”, relató Alejandra
González, estudiante de universi-
dad. “Se estrelló contra un poste
cuando terminaba de mandar un
mensaje de texto”.
Son precisamente este tipo de
percances los que pueden suceder
si no se presta atención al volante.
“Todo puede esperar, hasta un
mensaje de texto. Por esto creo
que lo importante es enfocarse
mientras manejan y dejar todo
lo demás para después”, explicó
Teyali Provencio, empleada de
una compañía de seguros para
autos.
Los cinco puntos principales
de la campaña “5 para Conducir”
son:
• No utilizar el celular para llamar o mandar mensajes de texto
mientras conducen.
• No incluir más pasajeros de
los que el automóvil le permita.
• No sobrepasar los límites de
velocidad.
• No ingerir bebidas alcohólicas
si van a manejar.
• No conducir o pasear sin el
cinturón de seguridad.
De acuerdo a la NHTSA, los
accidentes de tránsito representan
el primer lugar en muertes de
jóvenes en Estados Unidos. De un
100 por ciento el 35 es a causa de
accidentes de tránsito; un 16 por
ciento es a causa de homicidios;

San Antonio is officially
equipped with all the tools to be
a modern city.
In hopes of trying to bridge
all residents to the digital age,
the San Antonio Central Library
has formally kicked-off Connect
at Central, an all-new 12,800
square foot technology space that
features more than 100 desktop
computers, as well as 15 laptops
and 20 Google Nexus tablets
available for checkout within the
library.
“We’re excited that San Antonians who may not otherwise have
access to the Internet and to digital
resources will now have access to
them,” said Mayor Julián Castro.
“That they’ll be able to hop on
one of these computers or borrow
one of these tablets in the library
and do what human beings have
been doing now for many, many
years…learning.”
As part of the new tech space,
Connect offers a computer skills
training center with free instructor-led classes. On Mondays they
offer online job searching classes
from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., on
Wednesdays they offer a technology forum from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
and on Thursdays they offer a
technology forum in Spanish
from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“We know that a lot of folks are
becoming familiar with the new
online world, they may have a lot
of questions and we like to have
open forum classes where we can
answer a lot of those questions,”
said librarian, Julia Seragni.
Considering the fact that more
and more information is gravitating towards mobile devices,
Connect also features a “technology test drive” station with
iPads, Nooks, a Kindle Fire and
a Google Nexus. The goal of this
station is to support digital literacy on different platforms and
to educate patrons about emerging technologies.
The Teen Services department
at Central is also benefitting
from the project. The teen area,
exclusively for 13 to 18 year
olds, upgraded to 18 new iMac
computers equipped with creative
programs such as iMovie and
Garage Band to create their own
videos and music.

San Antonio junto con la última
montadura de Pancho Villa.
Aunque no se trata de una
próxima revolución, la ciudad de
El Álamo se pone cada vez más
interesante.
Con motivo de conmemorar
el arte y la cultura del Oeste, el
acto de inauguración del nuevo
Briscoe Western Art Museum
consiste en abrir al público una
exhibición que cuenta con más
de 700 artefactos que detallan
las historias de los vaqueros, de
población indígena y la de los
mexicanos.
Un adelanto del nuevo museo
para los medios de comunicación
se mostró jueves pasado por la
mañana.
En luz del estreno, este domingo 27 de octubre el museo
estará en fiesta de las 11 a.m. a
las 4 p.m.
“Vamos a tener charros, baile
folclórico, danzantes indígenas,
música western y diferentes actividades para la familia”, afirmó
la directora de relaciones públicas del museo Briscoe, Yadhira
Lozano.

la llegada del otoño

Para celebrar la llegada del
otoño, y en una festividad previa
a las celebraciones navideñas,
Sunshine Cottage, escuela para
niños que requieren atención
especial por limitaciones auditivas, preparó un día de juegos y
diversión para los alumnos de esta
institución que es una de las más
importantes en el país.
Los juegos empezaron desde
las 8:30 de la mañana el viernes
25 en las nuevas instalaciones
de Sunshine Cottage (603 E.
Hildebrand Ave.) bajo el cuidado
de maestros y la valiosa ayuda de
voluntarios, entre los cuales hay
padres de niños que estudian allí
los primeros grados de la escuela
primaria.
Con la variedad de entretenimiento que prepararon los
organizadores, los niños pasaron
un día de constante actividad
con carreras, pintando calabazas,
escuchando historias infantiles
y paseos en los prados de la escuela a bordo de una plataforma
cargada con pastura y remolcada

La ruta de la muerte

Nogales, Arizona. Hoy, en
esta frontera, va a morir un
inmigrante. O quizás dos. Mañana se repetirá la historia. Y
pasado mañana también. Son
muertes terribles e innecesarias.
Los inmigrantes se pierden en
el desierto, sin agua, y usualmente mueren de insolación
en dos o tres días a solo unas
millas de la ciudad más cercana.
En los últimos años se han
construido unas 350 millas de
muros entre México y Estados
Unidos. Es increíble que en
el 2013 sigamos hablando de
muros. El Muro de Berlín, que
solo tenía 87 millas, empezó
a demolerse en 1989. Me tocó
verlo. Fue emocionante presenciar como los jóvenes alemanes
de ambos lados destruían con
cincel y martillo lo que los
separaba. Por eso es tan aberrante ver cómo ahora quieren
construir 350 millas más de
muro en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos.
La verdad, sin embargo, es
que los muros no sirven para
nada. A solo 15 minutos en auto
de Nogales, Arizona, se acaba
el muro grande, el que tiene
unos 15 pies de altura. Se nota
claramente dónde el gobierno
se quedó sin dinero. Y es ahí
precisamente a donde se van
los inmigrantes para cruzar
ilegalmente a Estados Unidos,
sin ningún problema.
El problema viene después.
Los coyotes les cobran cuando
menos 2 mil dólares por persona por cruzarlos y, para no ser
detectados por los agentes de la
patrulla fronteriza de Estados
Unidos, se alejan lo más posible
de los puntos de vigilancia.
Esto los deja, generalmente, a
uno o dos días, caminando, del
pueblo más cercano. Muchos
nunca llegan. Ahí se acaba el
juego del gato y el ratón. Es la
ruta de la muerte.
El año pasado murieron 463
personas tratando de cruzar
hacia Estados Unidos, según
cifras oficiales de la Patrulla
Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos. Pero aquí hablan solo de
cadáveres recuperados. Muchos
ni siquiera son encontrados.
Esta cifra es la más alta desde
el 2005.
Aunque ha bajado considera
blemente el número de personas que intentan cruzar –
364,768 fueron detenidas en
el 2012, mucho menos que las
1, 676,438 de 2000 – sigue
subiend o la cifra de muertos
en la frontera. Es uno o dos
muertos por día, en promedio.
Ante el incremento de muros
y vigilancia del lado estadouni
dense, los indocumentados
se arriesgan a cruzar por los
lugares más alejados y peligro
sos. El resultado es mortal.
Nada va a evitar este peligroso viaje. Es una simple cuestión
económica. Si un inmigrante
desempleado o subempleado
en México o Centroamérica
puede encontrar un trabajo en
Estados Unidos que le pague
10 o 20 veces más que le pague
en su país de origen, seguirá
habiendo inmigración ilegal.
La única solución está muy
lejos de aquí, en el Congreso
de Estados Unidos. Allí tienen
que hacer dos cosas: primero,
legalizar a los millones de inmigrantes que ya están aquí y,
segundo, establecer un sistema
de visas y residencia para que
nadie tenga que tomar la ruta
de los coyotes, el desierto y la
muerte.
El Senado ya hizo lo suyo.
Ahora le toca a la Cámara de
Representantes. Los republica
nos controlan esa cámara. Su
líder, John Boehner, podría
pedir un voto pero, hasta el momento, por razones incomprensibles, se ha negado a poner el
tema de la reforma a votación.
Las excusas se acabaron.
Siempre pasa lo mismo. Cuan
do está a punto de discutirse y
aprobarse una reforma migratoria, algo se atraviesa. Pasó en
el 2001. Cuando los presidentes
George W. Bush y Vicente Fox
de México estaban negocian
do un acuerdo migratorio, 19
terroristas recurrieron a cuatro
aviones para matar a casi tres
mil personas en Nueva York y
Washington. Todo se paralizó
en Estados Unidos. Y ha vuelto a
ocurrir. Cuando le tocaba a la Cámara de Representantes debatir
la legalización de 11 millones de
indocumentados, se atravesó el
cierre del gobierno y el Congreso
se pasó 16 días buscando cómo
reabrirlo.
Pero ahora sí se acabaron
las excusas. La pregunta a los
congresistas es: ¿qué tienen que
hacer de aquí al fin de año? La
respuesta es solo una: debatir y
aprobar la reforma migratoria.
La falta de acción no es una
opción. Cada día que estos congresistas se quedan sentados sin
hacer nada, uno o dos mexicanos mueren en la frontera, uno
o dos centroamericanos, uno o
dos padres de familia.
En la estación de autobuses
de Nogales, México, me encontré a varias inmigrantes que
acababan de ser deportadas. A
las mujeres las dejan aquí; a los
hombres más lejos, para que
les cueste más trabajo regresar.
Pero igual regresan.
Han pagado tanto, han arriesgado tanto, que no se plantean
la opción de regresar derrotados
a sus pueblos. Se quedan unos
días rondando en la ciudad, alimentándose en los comedores
que establecen organizaciones
caritativas, y vuelven a dar el
salto al norte.
Todos saben que se la juegan y que pueden morir en el
intento, pero cruzan de todas
maneras. Se tiene la impresión
que, para estos inmigrantes,
quedarse en México es morirse
también: morirse de hambre,
de enfermedad, de frustración.
La ruta de la muerte está abierta. Que venga el que quiera.

Early Voting for the November 5 Election

As the November 5 election
for proposed changes to our
state constitution nears, I want
to keep the focus on voting.
Specifically, early voting and
why it’s a good idea.
The most obvious reason is
convenience. On Election Day,
voters must vote in their individual neighborhood precincts.
This can pose a real burden for
working folks, who generally
will want to get to the polls
before or after work. This is
especially a problem for people
with family obligations such
as getting the kids to school or
picking them up after work. It’s
also a problem if your place of
employment is far from your
workplace.
(The law does allow employees to leave work for the
purpose of voting, but makes
an exception for “an election
in which the polls are open
on election day for voting for
two consecutive hours outside
of the voter’s working hours.”
Election Day polls are open
7am-7pm, which puts two hours
before or after a 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Also, during hotly contested
elections, the polling places
might be packed. By contrast,
early voting offers everyone a
tremendous amount of convenience.
First off, people are not restricted in where they may
vote, as long as they vote in
the county in which they are
registered. That’s a good deal
if you live in Bexar County, as
there are 32 different early voting locations scattered through
all parts of the county! (You

Second, the early voting
period lasts 12 days! This year
that period began on October
21 and continues this week
through Friday, November 1.
On Sunday, Oct. 27, the polls
are open noon-6 p.m.; the remaining days they will be open
8 a.m.-8 p.m.
Another reason to vote early
is to avoid the possibility of
problems at the ballot box. I
am especially worried about
that this election, as Texas’ new
Voter ID law is now in effect.
I am concerned that election
judges will rule that the photo
identification presented by
some voters is insufficient, or
that voters who are unaware
of the new law will arrive at
the polls without proper ID, or
their eligibility to vote will be
challenged in some other way.
Women may experience a
problem in that the name on
your ID must match what is on
the voting registration certificate and voter rolls — if it does
not, they should be prepared to
sign an affidavit testifying as to
their identity.
I think the best scenario is
for such situations to come up
during early voting, leaving
time for the voter to correct the
situation and return to the polls.
(Of course, voters — whether
voting early or on Election
Day — can also request a
provisional ballot in such situations. After casting the bal-
lot, they must then go to their
county’s voter registrar and
prove their eligibility to vote,
after which the vote will be
counted. Whichever route the
voter chooses, he or she should
vote NO MATTER WHAT.

without casting a ballot!)
As I’ve noted in previous
op-eds, there are nine proposed amendments to the state
constitution on the ballot. I
particularly urge YES votes on
propositions 1, 4 and 6. Prop. 1
will give a 100% property tax
exemption to people who have
lost a spouse in military action; Prop. 4 will give a partial
exemption to disabled veterans
who have received a home as a
gift from a charitable organization; and Prop. 6 will help our
state implement a badly needed
water plan.

accessibility and availability
of television would ultimately
decide who experienced the
cultivation effect versus those
who did not.
The results of the analysis
supported the argument that
“television influences social
judgment.” Those who watched
a high volume of television tend
to recall more television examples of real-life situations, while
low television viewers recalled
their own personal experiences.
More than 30 years of research into television’s ability to
cultivate viewers’ social reality
demonstrates a moderate but
reliable link between television
exposure and some social judgments.
Understanding this relationship still remains unexplainable
to this day.
Mass communication researchers also say that individual knowledge can affect the
influence of television. In other
words, someone who watches a
documentary on Nostradamus
for the first time may become
frightened and terror-stricken,
while someone more knowledgeable in this area may not
react to this documentary at
all. The same concept applies
to the news, dramas and other
programs.
Although individual knowledge can determine the amount
of influence, some studies show
that the way reporters cover an
issue in regards to news can
determine whether or not we
accept something as true.
Several studies have found
that journalists tend to cover
specific, dramatic environmental events, most often those
with negative consequences;
stories about the risks associated with ongoing public policy
or individual behaviors receive
substantially less coverage.
Hard news and entertainment
news often show the most dramatic or most detrimental news
for effect. This effect cultivates
a perception of reality for the
viewer.
People assume that crime consumes them because they see it
all the time. People fear terrorists because our news saturates
us on a daily basis.
This has become our reality,
rather than the lives we live.
Our fears and desires come and
go because of what we see on
television. Our social judgments
remain contingent upon what
television tells us.
If perceived realism and social judgments can arise from
hard news and entertainment
news then is it safe to say that
we live and learn by television?
Maybe not entirely, but it
certainly plays a large role in
our beliefs as a society. Do we live and learn by TV?

The cultivation theory states
that television viewing promotes
negative feelings in heavy viewers. In 1987, the Mass Communication Journal, researched
whether greater television viewing could change someone’s objective, attention and perceived
realism. The subjects consisted
of 392 adults, 50.5 percent male
and 49.5 percent female.
The result:
The analysis showed that
television cultivates in both a
positive and a negative way. A
major factor that played into the
research was the use and affect
of demographic differences.
Findings also suggested that
television viewing could affect
interpersonal relationships.
Allow me to continue:

In life, there will always
be winners and losers
When will the coddling of this
current generation, Generation
Z, stop?
This group of young people
has just begun to enter adulthood
and we still feel it necessary to
handle them with white gloves.
Generation Z has seen the likes of
9/11, countless reports of school
violence, an economic meltdown
and a war that has claimed the lives
of 6,744 U.S. service members (according to The Washington Post’s
“Faces of the Fallen” webpage).
They should have the toughest
of skin, much tougher than Generation Y (Millennials), a generation who grew up with 80s sitcoms,
bad music and the production of 30
different Hot Pocket flavors.
I pose this question in light
of a recent event that involved
a football game played between
two Texas high schools. All you
need to know about the story is
that one football team beat the
other by a score of 91-0. No, that
is not a misprint; one team scored
91 points and the other team zero.
The victory has been less than
praise worthy, in fact, it has been
the opposite.
A parent of the losing team
has filed a bullying complaint on
the coach of the winning team.
So, in effect, the coach might be
punished for doing his job and
the players penalized for working
their tails off to be better than their
opponents.
All this is a result of a bitter
parent coming to the realization
that their child is not good at everything, specifically football.
Now, the story has gone national, and viral, and people are
calling for a mercy rule in 11-man
high school football so that, god
forbid, this happen to anyone else.
Mercy rules are good for the
Little League at your local YMCA
or Canada, but have no place in a
sport that is a near religion in the
state of Texas.
A 91-0 score is an anomaly;
let’s face it, so this is clearly a case
of being hasty because of one loud
parent can’t explain to their child
that there are winners and losers in
life and sometimes you lose.
The lesson to be learned here
has nothing to do with bullying.
The lesson should be that it is OK
to lose, no matter what the score
and to pick yourself up afterward.
Losing does not make you any less
of a person and should serve as a
learning experience so that you
can overcome adversity when it
stares you in the face.
If we teach our children that
when you lose or don’t get your
way to just complain, the result is
a brat with a false understanding
of life. Life in unpredictable and
those who think they can control
every aspect are delusional.
The coach or athletes on the
winning team aren’t at fault for
proving that hard work pays off,
the parents who give their children
false hope are, however.
If we let this slide, then there
is no lesson to be had, there is
no experience to learn from and
those children who lost that game,
lose again, but this time it is in the
game of life.

La victoria ha valido menos que
un elogio, de hecho ha sido todo lo
contrario.
Un padre del equipo perdedor
ha presentado una queja de intimidación o “bullying” en contra del
entrenador del equipo ganador. Así
que, en efecto, el entrenador podría
ser castigado por hacer su trabajo y
los jugadores penalizados por trabajar más duro para ser mejores que
sus oponentes.
Todo esto es el resultado de un
padre resentido que se viene a dar
cuenta que su hijo no es tan bueno
en todo, especialmente en el fútbol
americano.
Ahora, la historia ha corrido a
nivel nacional y se ha hecho viral, y
la gente está pidiendo una regla de
compasión en el futbol americano de
11 hombres de escuela secundaria
para que, Dios no lo quiera, esto le
vuelva a ocurrir a alguien más.
Las reglas de compasión son
buenas en las Ligas Pequeñas de su
YMCA local o en Canadá, pero no
tiene cabida en un deporte que es
casi como una religión en el estado
de Texas.
Un marcador de 91-0 es algo
anormal; seamos realistas, este
es claramente un caso de actuar
apresuradamente porque un padre
insistente no puede explicar a su
hijo que en la vida hay ganadores y
perdedores y que algunas veces nos
toca perder.
La lección que hay que aprender

fijamente en la cara.
Si les enseñamos a nuestros hijos
que cuando pierden o no se salen con
la suya que simplemente se quejen,
el resultado es un niño mocoso mal
educado con un falso entendimiento
de la vida. La vida es impredecible
y quienes piensan que pueden controlar cada aspecto de ella se está
engañando a sí mismo.
El entrenador o los atletas del
equipo ganador no tienen la culpa
de demostrar que el arduo trabajo
vale la pena, quienes tienen la culpa
de darle a sus hijos falsas esperanzas
son los padres.
Si dejamos que esto se pase, entonces no hay una lección qué aprender, no hay una experiencia de la que
se puede aprender y esos niños que
perdieron el juego, vuelven a perder,
pero esta vez en el juego de la vida.

Fox Tech alumni celebrate 68th
reunion, among them Roy BarreraSr.

Not an iPhone was in sight,
no one was texting, facebooking or tweeting.
There were occasional photos
taken with a disposable camera,
these captured moments were
clearly not to be instagrammed,
but rather printed out and neatly
placed in a thick photo album
that Wanda Jones, head honcho
of the Fox Tech Class of 1945
high school reunion, carries
with her once a year.
Clear Springs Texas Restaurant was the backdrop for this
year’s reunion.
Hugs were given, hands were
shaken, and onion rings were
shared along with tender high
school memories.
Including spouses, there were
36 of them present, but San
Antonio’s very own highprofile attorney, Roy Barrera
Sr. remembers there being at
least 100 plus students in his
graduating class.
To be clear, Barrera actually
graduated in 1944, but the 1945
and 1944 high school reunions
have entwined for quite some
time now, all thanks to Jones.
Her husband, who graduated
in 1944, received a letter from
Fox Tech for his 50th high
school reunion in 1994, unfortunately he passed away that
year, and Jones decided to call
the number on the letter.
“I contacted them and they
said they wanted anybody to
come,” said Jones.
She ended up seeing a few of
the people she graduated with
at the reunion and took it upon
herself to reunite the rest of
her peers.
“I got busy, I started contacting, we went through telephone
books, anything that we could
think of to find people,” said
Jones. “If their last name was
Jones we’d call them all to see
if they graduated from Tech
until we finally got a lot of addresses for our reunion.”
Ever since then the group
has gone out to eat and shared
a few hours out of a day once a
year to catch up on their latest
adventures.
At this year’s reunion, Barrera was accompanied by his
wife Carmen and his two comadres, Lucy Ramos and Lena
Cordova, who all three graduated from Tech in 1945.
“I came along as a chaperon,”
he joked.
Barrera remembered a time
when his wife, his comadres
and their respective husbands,
who have both passed away,
would go on triple dates.
When asked for his most
treasured high school memory,
in less than a split second he
exclaimed, “my wife.”
“I saw her there at school and
I was a little forward and I came
up to her and I told her that I
liked her, and that I’d like to
have her be my girlfriend, she
looked at me, I think she had
seen me before but she didn’t
say anything, and said, I’ll
think about it.”
Barrera was persistent and
thereafter invited her to Halloween Dance at School.
“I pressed the question at the
dance again, I wanted her to

my girlfriend,” Barrera smiled,
“and she said she would.”
The couple dated throughout
high school and as soon as he
graduated he joined the Army
and was sent overseas for two
years.
After he came back home,
Barrera proposed to Carmen
and married her in 1948.
Shortly after they had five
children, three of which became
lawyers, taking after Barrera
who studied law at St. Mary’s
University while simultaneously starting a family with
Carmen.
“I became a lawyer in 1951,
I got into the district attorney’s office immediately and
remained there until August
1957 at which time my partner,
Anthony Nichols was in the
DA’s office with me.”
After Barrera and Nichols left
the DA’s office, they formed a
partnership for 51 years.
“The longest lasting same
partnership,” boasted Barrera.
Although Barrera stands out
as an outstanding graduate
from Tech, he wasn’t the only
shining graduate in the group;
the room was filled with distinguished teachers, firefighters
and even a University Dean.
Although the group continues to dwindle through out the
years, their ties and memories
remain strong.
“The reunions are always
great, regretfully every year we
get fewer and everybody get’s
a little older, but we still remember each other from those
days,” shared Barrera.
The 86-year-olds are all
crossing their fingers for a
grand 70th high school reunion
in two years.

últimas palabras que dijo a
La Prensa el señor Humberto
García, integrante del grupo
Los Agues. Ahora sus hijos
siguen su legado de la música.
Fue en el 2009 cuando Humberto y su esposa Rebecca
pasaron a mejor vida, dejando
en este mundo lo mejor de sí
mismos; sus codiciadas canciones y una dinastía llena de
músicos.
Según indica Raymond, hijo
de Humberto García, su padre
era una persona llena de vida,
amor y romanticismo. Fue él
quien le dejó una de las aptitudes más preciadas, el don de
la música.
“Mi papá siempre fue muy
buena persona y siempre viajaba a sus conciertos con mi
mamá”, contó Raymond García entre lágrimas. “Mis papás
siempre fueron un gran ejemplo para mí y es por eso que
decidí seguir con la música”.
La música de Los Agues
siempre fue música para ena
morar y para el corazón, pero
sobre todo para los amantes de
la música tejana.
Dentro de sus canciones se
encuentran “Sentimiento de
amor”, “Pensando en ti”, “Buscando tu Sombra” y “Contigo”.
La mayoría de sus canciones
fueron compuestas por ellos
mismos.
“Los Agues fue un grupo
con mucho éxito y toda la comunidad los quería en Texas.
Incluso se hicieron tan famosos
que eran reconocidos en todo
el país”, expresó Tino Durán,
propietario de La Prensa.
Pero este grupo no quedó
en el olvido. Raymond García
junto con sus cuatro hermanos
continúa con la herencia de
sus padres, pero ahora con su
nuevo sencillo: “Aquí estoy”.
El grupo lleva por nombre
1509 y es compuesto por Raymond en la voz, Jennifer como
cantante de segunda voz, Jesse
en percusiones, Roland como
ingeniero técnico y Rudy en
la batería. Adicionalmente,
Elizabeth Martínez también
contribuye como segunda voz.
“Es un grupo muy similar al
de mis papás porque nuestro
enfoque principal es la música
tejana”, señaló Raymond.

Cancer patients receive heartfelt
gift from Capital Group Company

Needless to say, Cancer is a
horrible disease that really takes
a lot out of its victims. It’s a
tough fight that those afflicted
fight on a day-to-day basis.
Luckily, there is support. A local
group called Capital Group Companies endeavors to do random
acts of kindness around town,
and the patients at Cancer Care
Center of South Texas (CCCST)
were on the receiving end of it.
What they got were socks and
lots of them. There were over
250 pairs in every size, shape
and color. Just to have some fun
with it, the people at the CCCST
decided to throw a 50s themed
“sock hop” to help distribute
them. The staff members and
many patients came decked out
in their 50s attire and enjoyed
breakfast, snacks, and tines from
the era.
“A lot of our patients start to
suffer from neuropathy, and their
feet get numb and make them
cold. It makes them intolerant
to cold. It’s painful for them to
stand up, or even just have their
feet bare waiting on chemo, so
socks are perfect for keeping
their feet warm,” said Carla
Brady, Public Relations for the
CCCST.
This was much more than just
a party. With every package of
socks, came a handwritten message of hope and encouragement
such as “You are strong, and can
get through this.”
Margaret Arriaga 79, is a
regular patient at CCCST. Every
six weeks she visits the office
to get treatment, but she looked
ravishing in her pink poodle
skirt, sunglasses, and handmade
oxford shoes. Getting the socks
was a major pick up for her.
“These socks will help me out
so much. I have to wear socks
night and day. I can’t be without
them,” Arriaga said. “It’s great
what these people do for us here.
I love it and it means so much
that others care, too.”

Uno de los mayores retos de la
mujer en el mundo profesional
es la falta de equilibrio en su
vida. Esto sucede en todas las
mujeres sin importar si son
casadas, solteras, madres, profesionistas, estudiantes, jóvenes
y adultas.
Esto sucede porque la naturaleza de la mujer se refleja en el
control. Así es, se refleja en el
control del hogar, de la familia,
de sus negocios, o de cualquier
cosa que la involucre.
Pero, ¿por qué les falta el
equilibrio a esas mujeres que
terminan cansadas a morir y
además deben continuar con
sus actividades diarias? Es precisamente ahí en donde surge la
reflexión de que la vida no es
equilibrada del todo.
Hay que ser honestos, a la mujer siempre le falta tiempo para
hacer todo lo que tiene en mente.
Si es una madre convencional
que no trabaja, la mujer despier
ta pensando en el desayuno, en
la comida que hará para ese
día, en lavar lo que tiene pendiente, en dejar a los niños en la
escuela, en hacer las compras
necesarias para el hogar, y en
pagar lo que haga falta.
Pero una mamá que trabaja
piensa además de esto en todo
lo que tiene que hacer como
profesionista.
Ahora imagínense una madre
soltera que trabaja en casa y
trabaja como profesionista.
En mi caso, no tengo hijos y
no estoy casada. Sin embargo
tengo dos trabajos y me falta
tiempo para hacer mis cosas,
para ver a mi gente y tiempo
para mí.
Estas situaciones se les presentan gran parte de las mujeres
de hoy en día, y sucede porque
el mundo en el que vivimos es
rápido y si no te agarras de la
cuerda que te lleva, te pierdes
fácilmente.
Sin embargo, es precisamente
esa vida ajetreada la que te inspira a querer salir adelante y
llevar a los demás contigo.
Después de haber reflexionado, pude entender que la vida
que lleves necesita tener un
balance.

Last week La Prensa Foundation Inc. hosted the 2013 Leadership Awards Gala at the Omni
Hotel in the Colonnade. Ten
outstanding leaders in their field
who contribute to the wellbeing
of the community were honored.
As the Editor of the Walker
Report photo blog I was invited
to take photos of the recipients
as well as the attendees. The
event drew a large, diverse
crowd that gathered for the
festivities.
It was exciting to chronicle
the contributions of the ten
honorees that consistently make
significant differences in the
lives of everyday people. They
bring passion, compassion and a
willingness to go the extra mile
in ensuring the community is a
better place to live.

William B. Travis, one of
Texas’ founding fathers, was an
undocumented immigrant. Born
in 1809 in South Carolina, he arrived in Texas—what was then
northern Mexico—in 1831, after
the Law of April 6, 1830, made
his immigration illegal. The rest,
of course, is history. Despite his
undocumented status, he went
on to become a prominent figure
in Texas lore, sacrificing his life
in 1836 as commander of Texas’
forces defending the Alamo.
165 years later, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed the 2001
Texas DREAM Act, which
authorizes in-state tuition for
students who have lived in
Texas for three years and either
obtained a GED or were graduated from a Texas public school
or accredited private school.
In passing this landmark legislation with strong bipartisan
support, Texas became the first
state in the union to offer in-state
college tuition to undocumented
immigrants.
Twelve years ago, both Republicans and Democrats understood and were not afraid to
recognize publicly the benefits
that undocumented immigrants
bring to our state, especially in
terms of personal sacrifice, work
ethic, and contributions to the
economy.
Unfortunately, amidst recent calls to repeal the Texas
DREAM Act, the most extreme
right fringe of the Texas GOP
has either forgotten or conveniently chosen to ignore this
fact.
We believe the Act must be
preserved.
Given that Texas relies primarily on its sales tax to fund
state government and statesponsored institutions of higher
education, every time undocumented immigrants go to the
grocery store or otherwise spend
their hard-earned money, they
are directly contributing not
only to the economic well-being
of the state, but also to those
public colleges and universities
it supports.
Indeed, the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found
that undocumented immigrants
in Texas contributed more than
$1.6 billion in state and local
taxes in 2010 alone, and a study
by The Perryman Group found
that Texas would lose $69.3 billion in economic activity, $30.8
billion in gross state product,
and approximately 403,000 jobs
if all undocumented immigrants
were removed from the state.
By offering in-state tuition
to young undocumented immigrants, we encourage these
students to enroll in college and
increase their earning potential,
which, in turn, increases their
odds of becoming productive
contributing members to the

SAHPOO hosts annual
golf scholarship tourney

San Antonio Hispanic Police
Officers Organization (SAHPOO) is a nonprofit organization
of dedicated police officers who
go above and beyond in serving
the community. Their goal is to
serve in the police force while
developing strong ties and relationships with those in the city.
The main event SAHPOO
hosts is their Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. Sponsors
challenge against each other to
spar in a friendly game of golf.
All of the proceeds earned go
directly to students for scholarships. Last year, the organization
awarded $37,000 in scholarship
money.
“We have a lot of community
support, and we really appreciate
it. It really makes this endeavor
easier, but not much. We’ve been
planning this for a little over 10
months to ensure everything
runs smoothly,” said Steve Rodriguez, president of SAHPOO.
Some of the main sponsors
who donate include Blue Armor
Security, Glazers, Oak Farms
and Worldwide Pest Control.
For 26 years already, SAHPOO has endeavored to raise
funds to help promote education,
and they continue to do so. It’s
not an easy job.
“The main thing that keeps me
going is seeing those kids’ faces
when they get those scholarships.
It just makes me more motivated
to continue doing this. That’s
what it’s all about to me. These
kids work really hard to earn
this money, and they deserve it.
To see them getting something
and appreciating it really means
something to us,” Rodriguez said.

Texas Gallery Furniture refuses
refunds, leaves customers hanging

Texas Gallery Furniture in
San Antonio tells customers “no
cash refunds” and “please allow
4-8 weeks for delivery.” What
it doesn’t tell them is that they
could be waiting months to receive the furniture they paid for.
BBB has received numerous
complaints about the company,
which has locations at 1049 SE
Military Drive and 5550 NW
Loop 410 in San Antonio.
As of Oct. 22, 2013, BBB has
received 64 complaints about
Texas Gallery Furniture. In some
cases, the business responded
with offers of store discounts, free
delivery or requests for patience
due to manufacturer delays.
Complainants allege the company does not deliver ordered
furniture in a timely manner.
Complainants also say they have
a hard time getting the company
to return messages or give a clear
delivery date.
Eli Sanchez of San Antonio
said he purchased a sofa, loveseat and an ottoman from Texas
Gallery Furniture on June 22,
but never received it. He said
he was told the ottoman was not
in stock and should be in within
two to four weeks. He still never
received it.
“I’ve been trying to get a
resolution for about two months,”
Sanchez said. “They tell me the
manager is the only one who can
give refunds. They don’t give
names or times of when the manager is going to be there. I don’t
want the furniture now, I want a
refund. They keep running me
around in circles. They say only
one person can give refunds, but
that person’s never there.”
Kathleen Hendley of San Antonio was unable to get a refund
from Texas Gallery Furniture
despite a long delay in delivery.
She finally received the furniture
she ordered after waiting more
than four months.
“The bed should’ve been in
by mid-April,” Hendley said. “It
took four months. I had to hound
them every week or so. It went on
so long I told them I wanted my
money back, but they told me I
could only get store credit.”
Annette Garcia said she ordered bedroom furniture for her
daughter on Feb. 2 and still hadn’t
received it by April 24. She said
she was told the store did not issue cash refunds.
“I did receive the furniture,
but I got it in bits and pieces,”
she said. “I purchased it on Feb.
2 and got nothing till April 25. I
got a dresser and mirror first. I

Museo Briscoe...

El museo toma su nombre del
ex gobernador de Texas durante
la década de 1970 Dolph Briscoe, quien falleció en 2010. El
proyecto nació hace nueve años
y Briscoe fue uno de los prime
ros en donar dinero para hacerlo
realidad. En general, el proyecto
costó 32 millones de dólares,
dinero proveniente de la donación
de diversas fundaciones privadas
y de los impuestos del condado.
Con el fin de abrir sus puertas
una vez más, el edificio histórico
ha sido restaurado y el museo
Briscoe ahora cuenta con dos entradas, una por el lado del trafico
y otra por el Riverwalk.
“Pueden entrar por cualquier

algo histórico pero también arte”,
señaló Lozano. “El museo se enfoca en arte primero, pero como
se trata del Oeste, la historia tiene

El Briscoe exhibe pinturas,
esculturas, fotografías, trajes vaqueros, trajes de indígenas, trajes
del ejército mexicano, montaduras, espadas, herramientas y
hasta un zarape hecho a mano de
los 1800s.
También ofrece una instalación
artística de más de 100 espuelas
de plata que provienen de Sur
América, México, Canadá y de
los Estados Unidos. El motivo de
la instalación es para apreciar los
diseños gravados en las espuelas.
“Hay espuelas que tienen mas
de 200 años y hay otras que solo
tienen 20 años”, señaló el director
ejecutivo del museo, Steven M.
Karr. “Estamos ansiosos por que
la gente vea las espuelas tanto
como una pieza de arte como una
pieza utilitaria”.
Adicionalmente, el museo
ofrece un modelo de la batalla
de El Álamo acompañado con
audio que cuenta las diferentes

international-friendly match
against Australia last Saturday.
Teamwork was key in this
one-sided match as the U.S.
defeated Australia by a score

The great display of support for
the women’s national team emphasized how much of a soccer
influence we have in the city.
U.S. flags were hung, waved
and worn throughout the dome.
Following each of the four goals
scored, spectators made a thunderous roar.

for the world’s sport and U.S.
Women’s National team.
The U.S. defense stunned the
Aussies strikers from the start.
The back line of the U.S.
shined and allowed minimal opportunities for Australia strikers
Michelle Heyman and Lisa De
Vanna. In frustration, De Vanna
picked up the ball and slammed
it into the ground. The officials
had to calm her down.
The U.S. back line played as
if they were the best and clearly
demonstrated why their team is
ranked number one in the world.
U.S. midfielder Lauren Holiday said it best, “[We] have, if
not, the best back line.”
Hope Solo directed traffic
with every Aussie strike attempt. Australia was only able
to attempt nine shots on goals
the entire match. Of the nine total shots, only five were on goal.
Solo saved all five and remained poised. This was no
surprise given how sharp she
looked in all the training sessions leading up to the match.
“We have to just attack them
and go after them,” said Holiday, and that is just what the
U.S. front line did.
Coming out of the gun early,
in the sixth minute of the match,
Holiday sliced through Australia’s defense and scored a
quick goal.
After that first goal, the U.S.
offensive momentum continued
and could not be stopped.
Forwards Abby Wambach
and Alex Morgan played a game
of “monkey in the middle” with
the Aussie defense.
Cross after cross, Morgan and
Wambach cheered on her
teammates after every shot attempt and recognized their star
effort.
The Aussies struggled from
the beginning to the end. Rough
play went into the game by the
Aussies as frustration and team
tension increasingly started to
build. Australian goalkeeper
Lydia Williams barked at her
teammates giving them instructions.
Not wanting to give up, they
played the best they could until
the final whistle. But, the match
was all U.S.
The icing on the cake was
Christen Press’ stoppage time
goal in the second half.
The U.S. has proven why they
are ranked number one in the
world and considered the best
of the best.
They currently reign supreme
in the women’s world soccer
world.
The U.S. will need to remain
focused after this victory though.
With FIFA World Cup qualifying matches approaching and
targets on their back from the rest
of the world, future matches will
be interesting to watch as they
defend their ranking.
Alternate uniforms have been a
common trend in sports as of late
and the San Antonio Spurs are
adding a new one of their own.
The team unveiled a military
inspired camouflage uniform that
they will don twice this season to
honor servicemen and women of
the Armed Forces.
They’re nowhere near the level
of the Oregon Ducks, but it is quite
the change from the classic silver
and black.
The Spurs will wear the uniforms for the first time on Nov.
13 for USAA Salute Night when
they host the Washington Wizards.

Con el propósito de motivar
liderazgo en estudiantes universitarios
hispanos, la conferencia anual
de ¡Adelante! U.S. Education
Leadership Fund, una organización
sin fines de lucro radicada en San
Antonio, se llevó a cabo del 19 al 21
de octubre.
Más de 200 estudiantes hispanos
de diferentes partes del país se
reunieron en el Marriott Rivercenter
Hotel por tres días para estar atentos
a consejos de empresarios exitosos,
para participar en talleres enfocados
en el desarrollo profesional y
para formar conexiones con
profesionistas.
“¡Adelante! es importante porque
se enfoca en informar a estudiantes
que están en la universidad en este
momento para que se preparen
para corporaciones, porque no solo
importan las notas, si no también a
quien conocen y como se presentan
en una entrevista”, señalo Jay
Zambrano, Director Ejecutivo
de ¡Adelante! U.S. Education
Leadership Fund.
Además de ofrecer esta
conferencia anual, la organización
otorga becas y conecta a estudiantes
con empresas para que realicen sus
prácticas. Desde su inicio en 1993,
¡Adelante! ha donado a más de un
millón de dólares en becas.
“Estamos orgullosos en el hecho
de que muchos de nuestros alumnos
ahora son exitosos y muchos de ellos
atribuyen su éxito a ¡Adelante!”,
apuntó el Dr. Antonio Flores, quien
forma parte de la mesa directiva de
la organización y es el presidente y

Maritza se graduó de la universidad
Incarnate Word con una licenciatura
en meteorología y con una maestría
en administración con un enfoque
en desarrollo organizacional, y ha
estado como meteoróloga principal
en la cadena local de Univisión desde
junio de este año.
“Solamente les quiero decir a cada
uno de ustedes que nada es fácil, todo
toma trabajo, pero trabajen duro,
lleguen a donde tienen que llegar,
porque todo es posible”, aconsejó la
joven meteoróloga a los estudiantes
presentes.
Por su parte, el Dr. Flores anunció
que hace tres años los hispanos
se convirtieron el la minoría más
grande en asistir al colegio y que,
recientemente, los latinos habían
sobrepasado el número de estudiantes
de raza blanca que se graduaron de la
preparatoria y asistieron al colegio.
“La dirección está clara para
nosotros”, afirmó Flores. “No hay
ningún otro camino para ir más
que para arriba y ¡Adelante! está
sembrando esa dirección para el resto
de América porque nosotros creemos
firmemente que es el desarrollo de los
estudiantes como líderes lo que va
a cambiar este país por una nación
mejor”, subrayó Flores.

Providence Catholic School
students Isabella Rodriguez,
sophomore and Madison Wilbur, junior consider their involvement in the National Hispanic Institute (NHI) a significant step in their journey
to becoming accomplished
and successful women. Both
students agreed they are gaining valuable leadership and
communications experience by
participating in the programs
offered for exceptionally motivated youth at NHI.
In San Antonio, the NHI--a
nonprofit, volunteer group with
over 23 years of entrepreneurship and innovative leadership
for youth--works as an affiliate
of the San Antonio Community
Leadership Council (SACLC ).
They work with 200 students
from more than 60 area schools,
in programs such as the Great
and Ambassador Debates and
Lorenzo De Zavala Youth Legislative Session (LDS).
Isabella already considers herself a future San Antonio leader.
She followed her performance in
the Great Debate as a team member in the Ambassador Debate.
“It was exciting to work with
team that brought home the
trophy from the Ambassador
Debate—the first time in 10
years,” said Isabella.
After speaking before the City
Council about her NHI experiences, Isabella was selected to
serve on the District 3 Legacy
Leadership Initiative.
“I feel that being a student
at Providence and a member of
the NHI allows me to achieve
my goals in life.”
Madison, who participated
in the Great Debate and LDS is
eager to move to the next step
in the NHI programs--the Collegiate World Series (CWS).
“I know the CWS will be as
great an experience as the other
programs,” said Madison. “I
am expecting a real “wow” factor during the final challenge
before graduating from NHI.”
“Providence Catholic School

"Hispanic" preferred over
"Latino," but most in community
are indifferent
(EFE).- While 50 percent of
the people of Latin American
origin in the United States are
indifferent to being identified
as "Hispanic" or "Latino," those
who do care prefer Hispanic to
Latino by a margin of more than
two to one, according to polling
data released Tuesday.
The Pew Research Center Pew
posed that question to 5,103 U.S.
Hispanics in a survey carried out
between May 24 and July 28.
The majority of those surveyed,
54 percent, identify themselves
with their family's nationality
of origin - Mexican, Cuban,
Salvadoran, etc. - and another
23 percent define themselves as
American.
In the survey, headed by Mark
Hugo Lopez, people were asked
both about the identity and the
shared values of the Latin American community as well as about
the leadership of that community.
Three-fourths of U.S. Hispanics said that their community
needs a national leader, but approximately the same percentage
were unable to say who should be
that leader or to say that such a
leader did not already exist.

“De todos modos, La sed de venganza
¡Feliz cumpleaños!”

José Canepa miró la fecha en
el calendario: 7 de diciembre,
día de su cumpleaños. Pero no
toda ocasión de cumpleaños
trae felicidad. Canepa sonrió
y se encaminó al baño. Quiso
encender un cigarrillo, pero había
una fuga de gas en el baño, y hubo
una explosión que lo dejó con
quemaduras graves.
Llamó una ambulancia, pero en
el camino al hospital la ambulancia
chocó con otro vehículo. José
sufrió la fractura de una pierna, así
que lo subieron a otra ambulancia.
Al llegar al hospital, se resbaló de
la camilla y se dislocó un tobillo.
Estas fueron las aventuras de José
Canepa en su día especial.
El médico que tuvo que curarle
las quemaduras, enyesarle la pierna
y vendarle el tobillo le dijo: “De
todos modos, don José, ¡feliz
cumpleaños!”.
Hay fechas en el año que obligan
a hacer un saludo tradicional. Por
eso decimos: “¡Feliz cumpleaños!”,
o “¡Feliz Navidad!” o “¡Feliz Año
Nuevo!”, aunque ese día nos vaya
tan mal como cualquier otro, de
todos modos damos el saludo
porque es lo correcto.
Sin embargo, lo cierto es que los
días de nuestra vida están llenos de
sorpresas, y estas no discriminan
entre días especiales y días
ordinarios. El día menos pensado
puede sonar la alarma, trayendo el
sobresalto y la desventura. Nadie
sabe, al levantarse en la mañana,
de qué modo llegará al descanso
nocturno. El día puede depararnos
bienestar o calamidad.
¿Qué nos dice todo esto? Que
debemos vivir con fe. Que como
la vida es tan incierta, tan insegura,
debemos tener cada momento de
cada día nuestra fe y confianza
puesta en el que lo tiene todo bajo
control. Esa persona es Jesucristo:
Señor, Salvador, Maestro y Amigo.
No obstante, debemos reconocer
que el poner nuestra vida en las
manos de Cristo no nos pone
necesariamente a cubierto de
problemas. Pero sí nos libra
de la desesperación. Nuestro
problema no es la desventura;
es la desesperación. Es, en
otras palabras, la manera como
reaccionamos.
Cuando Cristo es nuestro Señor
y Dueño, podemos confiar en que
Él, a la larga, todo lo hace bien.
No siempre comprenderemos
el porqué de la desventura, pero
podemos, siempre, tener fe en el
amor y en la sabiduría de Dios.
Más vale que recordemos que
ninguno de nosotros tiene previo
conocimiento. El único que
conoce el futuro es Dios, que todo
lo sabe y tiene nuestra vida en sus
manos. Cristo es el Señor de toda
circunstancia. Pongamos nuestra
confianza en Él.

este acto salvaje, Narváez
zarpó y navegó en busca de
más destrucción en el norte
de la Florida.

de Cuba una patrulla
española en busca de él.
El cacique Hirrihigua logró
mañosamente que cuatro
miembros de la tripulación
patrullera desembarcaran allí,
y los capturó. Los españoles
restantes huyeron, pero
ahora Hirrihigua tenía cuatro
prisioneros con los que podía
tramar su venganza.
Un día de fiesta hizo
desnudar a los españoles, y
luego mandó que corrieran,
uno por uno, alrededor de la
plaza de la aldea.
Los indios les lanzaron
flechas que se les quedaron
clavadas en el cuerpo, pero
evitaron herirlos en órganos
vitales. Así dieron muerte de
una manera lenta y tortuosa a
tres de los españoles. Luego
sacaron al cuarto español,
Juan Ortiz, de 18 años de
edad, para matarlo de la misma
manera. Por alguna razón a la
mujer del cacique y a sus hijas
les cayó bien el joven Ortiz,
y convencieron a Hirrihigua
que le perdonara la vida. De
modo que el cacique condenó
a Ortiz a trabajo de criado y

programa deportivo para estudiantes asistentes después de atender sus respectivas clases. Tanto el renovado gimnasio junto con
la biblioteca del mismo plantel fueron remodelados con anticipación a los partidos de gran final entre Spurs y Heat de Miami. El
programa NBA Cares Legacy Project, en conjunto con la agencia no lucrativa United Way, Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E),
se dieron a la tarea de financiar los trabajos de remodelación. La visita del personal de SS&E se dio con motivo de los festejos y
eventos de la NBA Cares Week/Semana de Servicio Público de la NBA. “Nuestra visita es para invitarlos a que sigan aprovechando

En el concurso anual de canto “Our
Part of Town”, patrocinado por
Parks and Recreation Department
y realizado el martes 22 de octubre,
participaron 24 finalistas en tres
categorías: 20 años de edad en adelante, de 13 a 19 años y de 12 años
y menores. Resultaron triunfadoras,
respectivamente: Rachel Peña,
Madelene Hall y la niña Azjabella
Gutiérrez.
La etapa final de un concurso, que
llevó tres meses de eliminatorias,
tuvo como escenario el teatro de
Carver Community Center con
una total asistencia de amigos y
familiares de los concursantes, los
cuales recibieron premios en efectivo por parte de la administración
municipal.
Monalisa Montgomery, coordinadora del evento, agradece la
colaboración del personal de Parks
and Recreations, Park Police, Comunications & Public Affairs (City
of San Antonio), Carver Community Center y a los jueces del
certamen. Asimismo, expresó un
reconocimiento a la compañía

much better

The food truck industry is becoming a bigger and more
desirable commodity in San
Antonio. Instead of the typical
taco trucks, others have latched
onto the idea and now there are
plenty of mobile food options
available. However, there is
only one Puerto Rican food
truck in town, and it’s definitely
worth a try.
This elusive truck is located
on Smith Street, in Fort Sam’s
Houston’s food truck corner.
Don’t be discouraged because
it’s on base, as anyone can go
in. It’s fairly easy to find, and
the guards that man the place
are friendly and helpful. Just
tell them at the gate that you’re
there for the food trucks.
The place is called Gusto Criollo and is run by three natives
of Puerto Rico. Richard Diaz,
his business partners Richards
Arocho and his wife Dimaris.
Arocho and Diaz are good
friends from long ago, when they
worked in Brooklyn. Later on in
the future, they both ended up
in San Antonio and that is how
it began.
It’ll be easy to find, as the truck’s
a bright hue of yellow and very
well maintained. Their logo is a
symbol of Puerto Rico: a Coquí
Frog, native to the country. If
the look of it doesn’t attract you,
the smell will. During the lunch
hours, there is often a crowd
waiting around for them to open.
Gusto Criollo has gained some
recognition in the base, and is a
popular hotspot. Many visitors
become regular customers.
“We are really popular here. A
lot of the people that are at Fort
Sam Are from different places,
and when they hear it’s homestyle Puerto Rican Food, they
come looking for us, ” Diaz said.
The Truck is open Monday
through Friday from 11-2pm.
The menu changes daily, which
can be checked out on their
Facebook page. Wednesday is
a great day to go because they
serve a delectable treat called a
Pastellito, which is very similar
to empanadas, but are filled with
a meat and served hot. Gusto
Criollo’s pastellitos can come in
beef, crab or shrimp. The ones
I ate were cooked to a perfect
golden brown. The pastry part
was flaky and buttery and the
meat inside was hot and savory.
Another dish that was delicious
was the Chuletas a la Jardinera,
which is a stewed pork chop
with mixed vegetables. It came
served on a bed of fragrant white
rice and plantains. The pork
chop was served hot, and was so
tender that the plastic fork was
able to cut it. I’m honestly not a
fan of plantains, but these were
so perfectly ripe and sweet that I
ate them all. The perfect finishing touch to such a satisfying
meal was a swig of Malta India:
a non-alcoholic malt drink made
from hops, caramel and barley.
“It really means a lot when we
get these soldiers that are leaving
to other places and they come
here to get a last taste of our
Puerto Rican food. There’s nothing quite like having a homestyle meal reminiscent of your
homeland,”

Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 2 Mini
Muffin Tins with no stick spray, set
aside.
Combine solid pumpkin, cake mix,
cinnamon, ginger and cayenne pepper in mixer bowl, beat with electric
mixer on medium speed 2 minutes.
Spoon 1 ½ tablespoons muffin batter
in each cup. Bake muffins on center
oven rack 15 minutes. Dust with
powdered sugar, if desired.

“Yo creo que debe de ser al
revés y creo que lo principal es
pensar primero en ti para poder
estar con los demás bien”, se
ñaló la comunicadora.

frente a un extenso público
conformado por adultos y
jóvenes. Los donativos irán
directamente al museo de los
niños en San Antonio.
“Creo que además de con
tribuir a una buena causa me
quedo con un buen sabor de
boca porque Gaby Vargas es
una excelente persona, y una
mujer muy exitosa que estoy
segura que inspira a muchos
como lo ha hecho conmigo”,
comentó Marisela Gutiérrez.

• Visit museums. Museums are
a great way to get children excited
about learning. There are various
aeronautic and aviation venues
throughout the United States
where your children can observe
actual World War II planes, learn
about Apollo 11 by viewing im
ages of the first man to land on
the moon, and even examine
artifacts that were brought down
from space.
• Create a kite. Who doesn’t
recall childhood memories of
flying a kite on a beautiful windy
day? Aviation is more than 2,000
years old, with the earliest attempts
using kites and gliders. Leonardo
da Vinci drew several flight de
signs in the 15th century but never
constructed any. Kites are a fun,
inexpensive way for kids to be
outside and entertain themselves.
And making your own doesn’t
have to be complicated. Start by
searching the Internet for “how
to create a kite.” Several different
easy-to-create options pop up.
• Hold paper airplane competi
tions. All kids love to make paper
airplanes and watch them soar in
the sky. Have contests with your
neighbors and friends to see whose
can go the farthest, highest or
loopiest. Prizes can be given for
the best-flying and most creative
planes.
• Enjoy a family movie about
aviation. So many Disney films
have been about dreams coming
true, and everyone dreams of what

“Planes” releases for all to own

• Research the history of avia
tion at the library. Spend time

what they liked best. Later, help
them prepare a skit based on the
planes and people they chose,
dressing up and utilizing photos,

Go ahead, fall in love with “About Time”

I have a newfound respect
for “About Time” director
Richard Curtis (“Love Actu
ally”).
He gets it. He gets life, love,
the art of a great story and so
much more as he displayed in
his latest film.
I went into the screening of
“About Time” with a hatred
for every aspect of the film.
I hated Rachel McAdams, the
gangly ginger cast as the lead
male character and the fact it
involved time travel, however;
I left in tears with a new favor
ite movie.
The film is nothing as it ap
pears to be from the trailers. It
looks like a cheesy wannabe
love story, but it’s actually a
tale about family, love and how
life is precious.
The film mainly follows Tim
(Domhall Gleeson), a hopeless
romantic in a desperate search
for someone he can grow old
with and have a family. Tim is
nothing special and far from
a heartthrob. He’s more Opie
Taylor than Brad Pitt.
On his 21st birthday his fa
ther reveals the family secret;
men in their family can time
travel. How does time travel fit
in a love story? Well, it doesn’t
or shouldn’t, rather, yet it does
because Curtis is a genius. The
time travel is a minute part of
the film.
It’s all about the relation
ships. Not just Tim’s romance
and eventual marriage to Mary
(Rachel McAdams), but also
the ones with his father (Bill
Nighy) and sister, Kit Kat
(Lydia Wilson), too.
Nighy nails his role as Tim’s
father and Kit Kat is a compel
ling soul that has a magnetic
presence. She sucks you in
with her quirks and free spirit.
The family is not perfect, but
whose family is? That’s why
Curtis gets it. He’s not afraid to
deviate from the false idea that
families in the movies (or real
life) are perfect. Inside those
white picket fences, skeletons
still lie in the closets.
Tim’s family is not perfect
and when he tries to change it
by time traveling he quickly
learns it’s not the best solution
to his problems and let’s nature
take it’s course, which always
doesn’t lead to the best result.
As much as you wish Tim
could fix it all, good or bad,
he can’t. That doesn’t mean he
uses his time traveling abilities
for the right reason, but when
he does you can’t fault him
for trying.

in S.A. on Nov. 2

Alamo City, get ready to be on
the edge of your seats! Cheer (or
boo in some cases) your favorite
wrestlers as they battle inside
the squared circle! On Saturday,
November 2, River City Wres
tling (RCW) -- serving as San
Antonio’s brand of professional
wrestling for 11 years -- presents
the sixth annual “Return to Glory.”
The event will take place at the
Aztec Indoor Soccer Arena, 9870
Marbach Rd. in San Antonio.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the
event begins at 8 p.m. The VIP
Meet n’ Greet begins promptly at
7:30 p.m.
Tickets will be sold at the door
(cash or credit card) and are as fol
lows: front row, all ages are $15;
general admission, adults are $12;
general admission, kids ages 4-18
years and adults with a military/
student ID are $10; and children
three years and younger are free.

Advance tickets are cheaper than
those sold at the door with group
discounts also available.
RCW is always willing to give
back to the community and for this
event we will be hosting a canned
food drive for the San Antonio
Food Bank. Please bring your

Antonio Food Bank in honor of
the upcoming holiday season. In
addition, a portion of the event’s
proceeds will be donated to the
San Antonio Food Bank.
The main event will feature two
world-renowned superstars of the
ring. RCW will crown its first Leg
ends Champion between “The No
torious 187” Homicide and Devon
Dudley. The credentials of both
of these athletes is nothing short
of amazing. Homicide is a former
holder of both the Tag Team and
X-Division Championships in To
tal Nonstop Action (TNA) and a
former Ring of Honor Champion.
Dudley has held Tag Team Cham
pionships in every single major
promotion he has competed for
(World Wrestling Entertainment,
TNA, World Championship Wres
tling and Extreme Championship
Wrestling) and a former TNA
Television Champion. History will
be made in San Antonio!
In addition, TNA superstar and
RCW Icon “The Super-Mex”
Hernandez will team with “The
Samoan Beast” Michael Faith and
put their RCW Tag Team Titles on
the line in a Triple Threat Match
against Big Sed/Nemesis and
Honkey Kong/Koty Price.

Carlos Santana y su banda
brindarán un concierto único
en Guadalajara (México, su
estado natal de Jalisco) el 14 de
diciembre próximo en la Arena
Vicente Fernández. Esto lo hará
con el propósito de celebrar su
herencia musical latina, informó
Sony Music.
Asimismo, grandes artistas del
mundo de la música le acompa
ñarán en este concierto. Entre
los artistas confirmados figuran:
Chocquibtown, Gloria Este
fan, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs,
Juanes, Miguel, Niña Pastori,
Samuel Rosa de Skank, Salvador
Santana, Soledad, y Diego Tor
res, entre otros.
Este concierto se realiza como
inicio de actividades en torno al
lanzamiento de su nuevo disco
de estudio titulado “Corazón”.
El disco contará con la co
laboración de artistas como Lila
Downs, Ziggy Marley y Romeo
Santos. Más adelante, la dis
quera dará a conocer la fecha del
lanzamiento oficial de la nueva
producción.
Así, “Corazón” y el concierto
especial “marcan el regreso de
Carlos a su lugar de nacimiento,
Autlan, Jalisco, al sur de la Ciu
dad de Guadalajara, celebrando
de esta manera su herencia musi
cal latina”, describe Sony Music.
Así su música incluye géneros
musicales como pop, rock, salsa,
hip-hop, reggae, tradicional y
bachata.
Actualmente, Carlos San
tana se encuentra en Las Vegas
trabajando en las grabaciones
de su nuevo disco. La produc
ción del mismo está a cargo de
Lester Méndez y “Corazón”
será un lanzamiento conjunto
entre Sony Latin Iberia y RCA
Records.
Hasta la fecha, Carlos Santana
ha ganado 10 premios Grammy
y tres premios Latin Grammy.
En 1999 su álbum “Supernatu
ral” empató el record de nueve
premios Grammy, incluyendo
Álbum del Año y Grabación del
Año. Es integrante del Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame. También ha
recibido el Billboard Century
Award (1996) y fue introducido
al Rock and Roll (1998). La re
vista Rolling Stone lo ubicó en el
número 15 de la lista de los “100
Guitarristas más Grandes de to
dos los Tiempos”. Actualmente,
y por varios años, es el artista en
residencia en el House of Blues
en el hotel Mandalay Bay Re
