Principal’s Ponderings
Dear Parents and Students,
I am writing this from my hotel in Kelowna after the
first day of the CHEC convention. It is a wonderful
blessing to meet TLA families I have not met before
and also to talk with parents just embarking on the
homeschool journey. There is a lot of excitement
generated at conventions and I hope many of you will
be able to come to the BCHSA convention in Surrey,
June 4-5 – look out for the stripes!!!
I will hopefully be meeting many more families on
the trip north in the next few days.
With most families already re-enrolled and reregistered we are making plans for next school year.
Some exciting things to look forward to are online
grant allocation tracking, community events in areas
beyond the Lower Mainland and additional Grade
10-12 courses including a larger selection of AP
courses. We will also be offering Grade 8-12 students
the chance to study History through a fieldtrip to
next Spring Break.
2010-11
We are now accepting new and
re-registration and reenrolment applications for the
2010-2011 school year!

A Homeschooling Mom’s Field of Dreams
There is a lot to look forward to and I am thankful
that we have such a committed and dedicated staff
willing to go the extra mile to serve families. I would
encourage anyone in need of support to help make it
through the rest of the year, or anyone who needs
someone to talk to or some advice about next year to
contact us. There will be someone who can help!
Blessings,
Karen Gledhill,
Principal

May is filled with many “Special” days:
5 – Cinco De Mayo! The fifth of May marks the Mexican Army victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, and
represents Mexican independence from foreign intervention. Look for Cinco De Mayo themed resources including
the history of the festival, math activities, mariachi music, recipes, and more. Here’s one.
6 - Anniversary of The Hindenburg Disaster — the large hydrogen-filled airship or dirigible exploded over New York
in 1937 killing 35 passengers and crew members and effectively ending travel by zeppelin. View a slide show and
video and read about the disaster. You can also learn about the modern day Goodyear Blimp. Here’s one site
featuring information on the Hindenburg.
7 - Peter Tchaikovsky, musical composer of "The Nutcracker Suite", was born in 1840. Share the glorious music
Tchaikovsky wrote with your children. Ask your librarian for CDs of Tchaikovsky’s music. Of, if you have a DVD
player in your car, watch Disney’s Sleeping Beauty – the musical score is by Tchaikovsky.
9 - Sir James Matthew Barrie, author of Peter Pan was born in 1860. At this site you can access terrific photos of
Barrie, his home, and pictures of the original book cover and playbill posters for Peter Pan along with links to some
of his work. You can even read Peter Pan online or print out a chapter to take along and read in the car. Don’t
forget to check your library for the book, audio book, and DVDs that you can use in the car.
12 – Limerick Day! The limerick is a funny story told in 5 lines of rhyming and rhythmic verse. It was made popular
by Edward Lear who was born on this day in 1812. Print out limericks at the Edward Lear website. Challenge your
kids to write limericks. Here’s an example of a limerick may enjoy:
There was an Old Man with a beard, Who said, “It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen, Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!
22 - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the Sherlock Holmes detective series, was born in 1859. Head to the library
to get a Sherlock Holmes mystery or rent a DVD based on the books. Your children’s librarian may be able to direct
you to stories that have been adapted for younger readers. Take a virtual field trip to the Sherlock Holmes
museum!
29 - Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norkay became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest
mountain above sea level, in 1953. Print out information about Mt. Everest and use it to spark discussion in the car.
Dear Parents and Grade 9 students,
Many of you will already be thinking about Grade 10 and beyond to graduation. The decisions you make about
whether you earn your Dogwood Diploma depend on many factors and we are here to help you make the right
choices. Whether you have questions about graduation requirements, taking a few courses as a traditional
homeschooler, cross-enrolling, the AP program, university and college entrance, apprenticeships, or anything to do
with the grad program, please contact me by e-mail [email protected] or in the office Monday, Wednesday
or Friday.

Coming This Fall
TLA launches SCIENCE FAIR with two teachings sessions, online support, project assessment and
ribbons. Experimental science asks questions like: do coloured candles burn longer than white
candles; do detergents vary in effectiveness; do plants grow faster if sung to; do square ice cubes
melt faster than hexagonal or octagonal ice cubes; do ants- WAIT- what Question would YOU like
to test with an experiment?
Separate teaching sessions for upper elementary and secondary students tentatively scheduled for
Sept 28th & Oct 26th with the fair November 16th.
TLA Reading Club News
Book of the Month for May is Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. This
is a great series of Stanley Lampchop. There is a great site to
participate in having “Flat Stanley” adventures of your own:
http://www.flatstanleyproject.com.
Book of the Month for June is Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory by Roald Dahl. This is a fun read aloud or independent
reading novel. Follow the journey of Charlie Bucket from being
a poor kid to friends with one of the most interesting
characters, Willie Wonka. Read Anthony’s book review in the
TLA Reading Club.
If you have a book review for a children’s book your child
wrote, we would love to publish it. Please submit it to

Pennies Across BC
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada are raising Pennies for Patients for 2010. We want
to help contribute to their cause by creating a penny link across BC. We are hoping to collect
pennies equalling the horizontal width 677 km (from Prince Rupert to Alta Border) and vertical
length 1765 km (from Bennett to Fernie), which is 2442 km. Please send your pennies to your DL
teacher or the TLA office.
