BOOTHBAY HARBOR LOBSTER BOAT RACES
15 June 2013
BOOTHBAY HARBOR – It was one long winter here in the State
of Maine followed by the usual rainy spring. Those that follow
lobster boat racing hoped to hear the latest rumours during those
cold and wet months, but only a tidbit here and there was heard.
As the first race neared several rumours began floating around.
The most promising of them was that several boats from Beals
or Jonesport were fitting out to compete in the Gasoline Classes.
Shawn Alley, who owns the Calvin Beal 28-foot LITTLE GIRL,
which had been powered with a 455 Oldsmobile, now has a bigblock Ford. He planned to be out for the races at Moosebec Reach.
Chad Libby’s NIGHTMARE [Young Brothers 30, 400 ci], who
raced last year, is being readied for another year. Both will be
competing in Gasoline Class C. Many hope that Ellery Alley’s
UNDERDOG [Custom 29, 548 Chevrolet] and Galen Alley’s
LORNA R. [wooden 30 footer, 496 Chevrolet] (the boat used to
make FOOLISH PLEASURE [Custom 30 footer, 638 Ford]) will
find nice hairy engines and join them. Maybe Galen would even
repower FOOLISH PLEASURE with a smaller motor and dropped
down to Class C. This could become a very exciting class.
MLBRA Sponsors
As for FOOLISH PLEASURE she is currently at her
mechanic’s shop. At Eastport last year she had an engine issue just
after her first race. The rumour is the issue was significant and
probably will not be racing the first few events.
Most had heard that Steve Johnson had a new creation coming,
The Tiki bar. She has owls on its top so that an osprey does not nest
there. If that happened some state or federal agency would not
allow the boat to move until the little ones had grown up and flown
away.
Then there was Bruce Engert’s THUNDERBOLT [South
Shore 30, 496 Chevrolet]. For more than a year she had been sitting
on Route 1 in Wiscasset, then she disappeared and people started
wondering what was going on. Mid-winter it was learned that she
was at her engine builders in Cundys Harbor getting worked on.
The next queston for many was how is she going to go?
Another rumour, but true, was Ed Shirley having sold
ASKKN [Calvin Beal 38, 525-hp John Deere] and had purchased
the former MISTRESS [Mitchell Cove 32, 410-hp Sisu], now
MISS KARLEE, which had been owned by Todd Ritchie. After
the purchase she was sent to Steve Johnson’s boat yard on Long
Island for some minor work and would be done in time for the

C-GIRL, owned by Matthew Taylor, is a new boat this year. She is
a Crowley 36 powered with a 250-hp John Deere. She competed at
Boothbay and Rockland in Diesel Class D.

in the races at Boothbay Harbor. She is a Calvin Beal 44 powered

Boothbay races.
There were other rumours floating around, but we really
needed to wait and see what materialized.
The day before the races, boats began gathering at Brown’s
Wharf on the eastside of Boothbay Harbor on a nice warm sunny
summer day. The day of the race, another great summer’s day,
boats began showing up at 0800 hours and for two hours they kept
coming. When the sign ups were complete, 52 boats were entered.
Towards the end of sign ups one racer wanted to file a protest
against Michael Gray’s VENOM [Muscle Ridge 28, 250-hp Sisu]
saying that she was not racing in her proper class claiming that she
has more power than she claims. Just before the races commenced
VENOM was called over to the committee boat by Marshall
Farnum, who heads the Boothbay Harbor race committee, and the
protest was discussed. Gray thought he was being singled out and
it was explained that he was not but we had to make him aware
of the issue. After a brief discussion Gray decided to move up to
Class E.
There has been questions and controversies that have been
circulating for several years regarding boats not racing in their
proper race class. This issue has been more prevalent ever since
electronic diesel engines were put into production. An engine today
can come listed at one horsepower, but with a laptop computer
an engine mechanic can boost this engine up several hundred
horsepower. Several years ago a three protest ruling was created
but it was never used. What do you do about suspected boats not
racing in their appropriate class? A suggestion was has been made
that anyone who wins their class for two or three years would be
forced to move up to the next class.
Finally we were ready for racing. One change to the races was
the three Boothbay races were now just one race and would not
start the event. The first race of the day was for Work Boat Class A
[Skiffs 16-feet and under with outboards up to 30 hp, Operator 18
years and younger] and B [Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 31 to
90 hp], since there was just one boat Cole Poland in SAVANNAH
in Class A with a speed of 19 mph. The winner of Class B was
Marshall Spears’ J-BOAT [16-footer, 90-hp] over Brent Perow’s
JULIA L. [22-footer, 90-hp Yamaha]. Two boats came to the line
for Class C [Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 91 hp and up] and
this race was won by Dave Johnston’s CASCO MISS [Eastern 22,
140-hp Honda] with Jim Koehling’s MALAGO [Crowley Beal 23,
150-hp Yamaha] back about three boat lengths.
The Gasoline Classes were combined into one race since there
was one boat in Class A [4 & 6 cylinder 24 feet and over], CRY
BABY [Custom 25, 292 Chevrolet]; one boat in Class B [V-8 up
to 375 cid, 24 feet and up], WIDE OPEN [Robert Rich 28, 350
Chevrolet], two boats in Class C [V8, 376 to 525 cid, 28 feet and
over], THUNDERBOLT and BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32,

454 Chevrolet] and no one in Classes D [V-8, Over 525 cid, 28 feet
and over] and E [V-8, Over 525 cid, 28 feet and over, superchargers/
Turbos].
THUNDERBOLT was making her first appearance since
Portland in 2010 and all wondered just how well she would run.
Another boat that was going to be faster was Colyn Rich’s WIDE
OPEN, which received a new 350 Chevy engine over the winter.
As the four boats came towards the finish line it was
THUNDERBOLT, clocked at 44 mph, with a healthy lead,
followed by WIDE OPEN, CRY BABY and BLACK DIAMOND.
The Fastest Working Lobster Boat – Boothbay had seven boats
come to the line, and some were only entered in this race. Clive
Farrin and his SEA SWALLOW [Newman 36, 450-hp Caterpillar]
was one of these and had not competed since Boothbay in 2008.
She had long been on the racing circuit dating back into the 1990s.
The race winner was Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin
Beal 38, 650-hp Scania], followed by Rusty Brewer’s LOOK OUT
[Young Brothers 38, 700-hp Detroit] and Nick Page’s ALL OUT
[Crowley Beal 33, 300-hp John Deere].
There were six boats entered in the Wooden Boat Race and
it was going to be an interesting race. Unfortunately defending
winner Chris Page’s ABIGAIL & CARTER [Johns Bay Boat Co.
42, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] was absent, but runner up Bill Lowe’s
EMILY GRACE [Bill Lowe 30, 500-hp GM] was there. As the
boats came off the line it looked close, but as they neared mid-way
point it was WIDE OPEN and EMILY GRACE fighting for the top
spot and at the finish line it was WIDE OPEN by a boat length.
Third went to Don Drisko’s MERGANSER [Calvin Beal wooden
33, 230-hp Yanmar], followed by Alan Dugas’ DELUSIONAL
[Johns Bay Boat Co. 38, 600-hp Cummins], Scott Dugas’ SAND
DOLLARS III [Johns Bay Boat Co. 41, 700-hp Caterpillar] and
Vance Bunker’s SARI ANN [Johns Bay Boat Co. 42, 660-hp
Volvo].
Now it was time for the Diesel Classes and there were some
new boats competing. In Diesel Class A there was Fred Farnham’s
TESSA’S PRIDE from Boothbay, which is a JC 31 powered with
a 210-hp Cummins. This was formerly raced by David Schlaefer
of Bernard, who sold her to a fisherman in Boothbay and Fred
Another new boat is SEASMOKE owned by Nick Lunt of Tenant’s
Harbor. She is a Calvin Beal 38 powered by a 750-hp Iveco.
During the winter Daniel Lowery bought ENTRAPMENT, a 43-foot
Canadian built boat. She is powered with a 375-hp John Deere.
THUNDERBOLT, owned by Bruce Engert of Boothbay Harbor, had
not competed since Portland in 2010. Here they are dominating the
races at Boothbay, but developed an engine issue after the races.

Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE came all the way from New Hamsphire to
compete in the first three races of the season.
Brent Davis of Jonesport brought HEE HAW, a Wayne Beal 36 to
Boothbay and took second in Diesel Class F.
said that he was now her third owner. In Class C was Matthew
Taylor’s C GIRL from Bremen, which is a Crowley 36 powered
with a 250-hp John Deere that was just launched. In Class E,
as mentioned above, Ed Shirley’ new boat MISS KARLEE, a
Mitchell Cove 32 powered with a 410-hp Sisu. In Class F Parker
Poole IV of Falmouth entered DETERMINATION, a Five Islands
35 powered with a 420-hp Caterpillar. This boat was designed by
Royal Lowell and was built from the Bruno 35 mould in 1995.
In Class J another new boat was Ryan Miller’s MILLER TIME
from Spruce Head. She is a Calvin Beal 38 powered with a 660-hp
Caterpillar. In Class K another new Calvin Beal 38 was Nicholas
Lunt’s SEASMOKE, powered with a 750-hp Iveco from Tenant’s
Harbor. In Class M there were three new boats: Sy Knight’s
BELLA CRIE, a Young Brothers 40 with a 380-hp Volvo; Daniel
Lowery’s ENTRAPMENT, a 43 foot Canadian boat with a 375hp John Deere from Trevett; and Johnson Boyer’s JACKIE O., a
Duffy 42 powered with a 600-hp Caterpillar.
Class A [Up to 235 hp, 24 to 31 feet] has been dominated by
David Grant’s EASY MONEY [Northern Bay 28, 218-hp Sisu]
and continued his winning ways over his only other competitor
Steve Johnson’s LYNN MARIE [Jingle Johnson 28, 230-hp
Isuzu]. In Class B [Up to 235 hp, 32 feet and over] MERGANSER
easily outpaced Matt Thiboult’s SANDRA ANN [Young Brothers
33, 210-hp Cummins]. ALL OUT was the only entrant in Class C
[236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet] and C GIRL was the only entrant
in Class D [236 to 335 hp, 34 feet over]. Four boats came to the
line in Class E [336 to 435 hp, 24 to 33 feet] and it was going to
be interesting to see just how competitive VENOM would be in
this class. As they headed for the finish line VENOM was well
in front with MISS KARLEE second and Nick Wiberg’s MISS
KATIE [Holland 31, 355-hp Cummins] third. The boat to beat in
Class F [336 to 435 hp, 34 feet and over] over the last several years
has been Ed Turosian’s MISS ROSE [Mitchell Cove 35, 350-hp
Cummins] from Seabrook, New Hampshire. He had three other
competitors in his class, but he easily out distanced them for the
win with Brent Davis’ HEE HAW [Wayne Beal 34] second, Kevin
Glover’s QUICKSTEP [Young Brothers 35, 405-hp Cummins]
third and Parker Poole’s DETERMINATION fourth. Another
boat that has dominated her class over the last several years has
been Todd Ritchie’s SEACOCK [Calvin Beal 34, 436-hp Sisu] in
Class G [436 to 550 hp, 28 to 35 feet]. There were two other boats
entered and one, Bill Lowe’s EMILY GRACE created some real
competition to SEACOCK last year. At the halfway point it was
obvious that SEACOCK had the lead with EMILY GRACE back
three or four boat lengths and Zach Donnell’s HAPPY HOUR
[Mitchell Cove 35, 500-hp John Deere] in third. The only entrant
in Class H [436 to 550 hp, 36 feet and over] was Travis Otis’ FIRST
TEAM [Northern Bay 36, 410-hp Sisu] so he raced with Class I
[551 to 700 hp, 28 to 35 feet] to make it more exciting. Class I has
been an interesting class over the last several years. Last year’s
overall winner was Gary Genthner’s LISA MARIE [Libby 34, 690hp Iveco], who was in a real tight battle with Chris Smith’s MISTY
[Crowley Beal 33, 650-hp Scania] and Scott Woods’ WILD ONE
[Crowley Beal 33, 892-GM]. As the racers headed toward the finish
line WILD ONE crossed with two boat lengths to spare, followed
by MISTY and LISA MARIE. Seven boats were entered in Diesel
Class J, 551 to 700 hp, 36 feet and over. The top two boats were
close and it was Scott Keenan’s DEAR ABBIE [Northern Bay 38,
610-hp Cummins] crossing first, then came BLUE EYED GIRL
and MILLER TIME. Diesel Class L [901 hp, 28 feet and over] had
just one boat, Rick Albertson’s ALL SET [Holland 38, 1,200-hp
MAN] so it was combined with Class K [701 to 900 hp, 28 feet and
over]. The battle between Justin Philbrook’s RISING SON [Calvin
Beal 38, 750-hp Detroit] and Nicholas Lunt’s SEASMOKE was
won by RISING SON. Somehow Tom Clemons and his 4GIRLS
[Wesmac 46, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] was entered in the Diesel Class
M, 40 feet and over, up to 750 hp and he had no trouble distancing
himself from the competition. However in all fairness first goes to
SAND DOLLAR III followed by ENTRAPMENT. 4 GIRLS was
then given third place in Diesel Class N, 40 feet and over; 750 hp
and over. There were only two boats on the line for Class N, which
was won by Andy Johnson’s WHISTLIN’ DIXIE [Holland 40,
1000-hp Caterpillar] and second went to Keith Jordan’s BAILEY
& BELLA [Calvin Beal 44, 1000-hp Caterpillar].
In the Gasoline Free for All four boats came to the line with
the same results, THUNDERBOLT, WIDE OPEN, CRY BABY
and BLACK DIAMOND.
Next came the Diesel Free for All and nine boats came to the

line for this race and it was going to be interesting. As they got
half way it was clear that WHISTLIN’ DIXIE had the lead, but
second to fifth was anyone’s guess. All within a boat length of
each other they stormed across the line. First was WHISTLIN’
DIXIE, followed by WILD ONE, ALL SET, BLUE EYED GIRL
and 4GIRLS.
Only four boats opted to race in the Fastest Lobster Boat and
the big question was THUNDERBOLT fastest enough to best
WHISTLIN’ DIXIE? Well, she was won by two boat lengths.
Third went to WILD ONE and ALL SET was fourth.
Following the race THUNDERBOLT headed for the dock and
developed an engine issue. No one was sure how bad the problem
was, but they did not show up to race at Rockland.
Since all the prizes were handed out at the finish line following
each race, when the last race was run almost all the racers headed
for Rockland, the site for the next races.
ROCKLAND LOBSTER BOAT RACES
16 June 2013
ROCKLAND – Another beautiful day on the mid-coast of
Maine greeted racers. Sign-ups went well, but it was not without
controversy. People were still talking about VENOM and one
person was complaining that there was not a lady skippers or
powder-puff race. I explained that the Association had put in a
women’s race, but that only a few signed upped and at year’s end
no one had even qualified for the trophy. It was offered a couple
of years and then the members voted to eliminate it. It also can be
one of the most dangerous races if the woman at the helm is not
experienced in handling a boat going over 30 mph in a group of
other boats. Yes there are certainly a few women on this coast who
can handle a boat at 40 to 50 mph. One woman who competed for
a number of years never would race the Lady’s skipper’s event
saying it was much more fun beating up on the men. We also had
Ian Adair come up and sign in TOUCH OF MADNESS. He had
raced last year at Stonington and we failed to notice that he was too
short to have competed in the Gasoline Class, Gas Free-for-All and
Fastest Working Lobster Boat. The boat is a 22-foot Sisu powered
with a 496 Chevrolet inboard and boats must be 24 feet to compete
in the Gasoline and Diesel classes. He explained that he had added

two feet to his boat so he was signed up for Gasoline Class C.
When sign ups were done there were 55 entrants, which was
down 16 boats from the year before. Everyone always wonders
why a drop, but probably there is no real concrete reason. It may be
some boats are not ready, some compete for a few years and then
lose interest or there was something else more pressing on their
family schedule. Next year if the stars all line up correctly there
could be a record number of racers.
With no entrants in Work Boat Class A, the first boats to race
were Work Boat Class B. Five boats were entered, but just four
crossed the finish line. Continuing his winning ways from the
day before was J-BIRD. He was followed over by Robert Curtis’
GALLEY GOFER and Al Strout’s CLUSTA. There were only
two boats in Class C, which was easily won by CASCO MISS
followed by Joseph Martin’s MISS ABBEY.
There was only one entrant in Gasoline Class A, CRY BABY,
so they ran down with Class B’s three boats. I am not sure what
happened overnight but CRY BABY came screaming up on the
far side of the course to cross first with WIDE OPEN second,
which was reversed the day before. [Just before the start of the
Bass Harbor races Wayne Rich said that the reason they were
not as fast was because they had broken a valve spring. As they
were heading back home after Rockland the engine did not sound
right and they shut it down and were towed the rest of the way.
Fortunately the only other damage was some minor scarring of
the rocker arm.] Since they are both in different classes they both
won their respective classes and Walter Rich’s FROSTY PUNKIN
[General Marine 25, 350-hp Chevrolet] was second and Donald
Hilt, Jr.’s MARDON [Webber’s Cove 29, 350-hp Chevrolet] was
third in Class B. Two boats, BLACK DIAMOND and TOUCH OF
MADNESS, came to the line for Gasoline Class C and it was an
easy win for TOUCH OF MADNESS with a speed of 42.2 mph.
As she passed the committee boat at the finish line a couple of the
judges asked just how big she was. There were again no entrants in
Class D or E.
Now came the diesel classes. Class A had the same entrants as
at Boothbay, plus Gary Hatch’s QUEEN’S LADY [Paul Chapman
wooden 29, 210-hp John Deere], and it was another win for EASY
MONEY, with LYNN MARIE second and QUEEN’S LADY
third. Four boats were registered for Class B and MERGANSER
took the top prize, with Bill Oliver’s KAREN LYNN [South Shore
34, 220-hp John Deere] second and Cameron Crawford’s RICH
AMBITION [Robert Rich wooden 34, 220-hp John Deere] third.
In Class C Mitchell Eaton’s BRIAN MITCHELL [Young Brothers
33, 300-hp Caterpillar] took the win and just off his stern was Todd
Nickles’ DOUBLE TROUBLE [RP 31, 265-hp John Deere] and
third went to HOOLIGAN [Mariner and Isaac Beal wooden 34,
210-hp Cummins] owned by Devin Haskell. In Class D Geoffrey
Barrett’s LONG FACES [Duffy 34, 315-hp Cummins] was able
to get by C-GIRL for the win. In Class E four boats came to the
line and in it was the same finish as at Boothbay, VENOM, MISS
KARLEE and MISS KATIE. MS. ROSE continued her domination
of Class F, with Brent Davis’ HEE HAW second followed by Kevin
Glover’s QUICK STEP. Another race with basically the same
finish as at Boothbay was SEACOCK besting EMILY GRACE
followed by HAPPY HOUR in Class G. FIRST TEAM took the top
spot in Class H with John Bickford Jr.’s HIGH HOPES ISAIAH
[Northern Bay 38, 500-hp Caterpillar] second. At sign up Gary
Genthner of LISA MARIE opted to move from Class I and go up
to Class K, knowing that he cannot move back down. There were
just two boats in Class I and this time it was MISTY besting WILD
ONE in a close finish. Class J had five boats come to the line. It
was a real close battle between the racers as they hit mid-course.
At the finish line Carl Gross’ HEY BABY [Northern Bay 36, 610hp Volvo] grabbed first followed by DEAR ABBIE, BLUE EYED
GIRL, DEFIANCE and MILLER TIME. Always one of the most
interesting boats on the racing circuit is Glenn Crawford’s WILD,
WILD WEST [West 28, 466 ci International]. When she is idling
black smoke pours from her stack and Cameron Crawford, who
was at her helm today, promised that he was going to put on a
show. As they came up the course all eyes on the committee boat
watched the black smoke pour out of WILD, WILD WEST. Then
it began turning white and that means something was going very
sour in the engine. Then she went dead in the water with lots of
white smoke pouring from inside the shelter. Following the race he
said that there was a catastrophic turbo failure. They found pieces
of turbo fins in the bilge and the explosion blew the exhaust off
the engine. Oh then there was just a small fire, but that went out

quickly on its own. LISA MARIE came across the line first with
RISING SON second and SEASMOKE third. We waited a short
time as WILD, WILD WEST was towed to the side. There were
no entrants in Class L and just two in Class M, which was won by
JACKIE O. with BELLA CRIE second. Class N is always a great
battle between WHISTLIN’ DIXIE and 4GIRLS, with WHISTLIN’
DIXIE usually on top and today would be no different, winning by
a couple of boat lengths. Third went to BAILEY & BELLA.
In the Gasoline Free-for-All four boats came to the line and
missing was WIDE OPEN, who was only going to do the Wooden
Boat Race. TOUCH OF MADNESS easily took first with CRY
BABY second, BLACK DIAMOND third and FROSTY PUNKIN
fourth.
Eight boats were on the line for the start of the Diesel Free
for All. Again this was going to be interesting to see who finished
where. WHISTLIN’ DIXIE took first followed by LISA MARIE,
WILD ONE and 4GIRLS. When Nick Wiberg crossed the line in
MISS KATIE he screamed “Now that was fun!”
Next up was the Wooden Boats with seven boats signed up.
Chris Page’s ABIGAIL & CARTER and EMILY GRACE usually
finished within a boat length of each other and it was anyone’s
guess who was going to win. As they ran up the course it was close
but as they neared the finish it was ABIGAIL & CARTER sliding
across first with EMILY GRACE, who was followed real closely
by WIDE OPEN.
In the Fastest Lobster Boat Race four boats came to the
line and it was going to be one of the best races of the weekend.
TOUCH OF MADNESS was a midget compared to the big diesel
racers, but she kept her distance and crossed first. Second went to
WHISTLIN’ DIXIE followed by LISA MARIE and 4GIRLS.
Following the race a protest was filed by Gary Genthner of
LISA MARIE asking the race committee to check her length. A
tape measure was found and two judges went down to the boat and
found that she was 22 feet. When this was reported back TOUCH
OF MADNESS was given a disqualification in all the races she
competed in. Just before the awards were given out the situation
was explained to Ian and he admitted that the extension had not been
put on yet. He was then informed that he was disqualified for all
the events that he had participated in. He argued about the Gasoline
Free-for-All saying that the rules or class specifications do not
specify size, however, to compete in this race it is understood that
you must qualified in a regular Gasoline class. The race committee
did not alter their decision because Ian had not been truthful about
the boat’s length in the first place and his disqualification from all
his events fell under Unsportsmanlike Conduct. This meant that in
Gasoline Class C BLACK DIAMOND was now the winner. In the
Gasoline Free-for-All CRY BABY was first, BLACK DIAMOND
second and FROSTY PUNKIN third. In the Fastest Lobster Boat,
WHISTLIN’ DIXIE was first, LISA MARIE second and 4GIRLS
third.
Following the races the rules were gone over by the race
committee and rewritten so that everything is defined better. Now
it was on to Bass Harbor.
Just before the Bass Harbor Races I was informed that the
Eastport Pirate Festival committee had decided not to hold lobster
boat races there this season. Although a small number of boats
competed there it was a large draw bring hundreds of spectators to
town. I am not sure if this is the last word and whether someone
At Rockland the tables turned as MISTY beat WILD ONE in Diesel
Class I. LISA MARIE opted to change her class.
Ryan Miller’s new boat, MILLER TIME, is a Calvin Beal 38 powered with a 660-hp Caterpillar diesel. He competed in Class J and
was 3rd at Boothbay and 5th in Rockland.
Gary Genthner’s LISA MARIE leaves WILD WILD WEST
smoking. Wild Wild West and a major turbo failure with fins in the
bilge and exhaust blown off the motor.

else might step to the plate and want to see this happen. Stay tuned.
Cove 28, 225-hp John Deere] with Charles Dillon’s JANA D. [Sisu
30, 220-hp] second. There were eight boats on the line for Class
B and as the racers headed down the course it looked tight. At
the line by just a boat length was Jason Young’s KS ASS with
Everett Beers’ MISS KERI LYNNE [Mitchell Cove 32, 220-hp
John Deere] second and Cameron Crawford RICH AMBITION
third. In Class C Pat Hanley’s MICHAEL ALAN [Mitchell Cove
32, 300-hp Cummins] was the winner. He was followed by Joseph
Lunt’s UNCLE BUBBA [Osmond 32, 265-hp John Deere] and
Alan Gordis’ HOLEMJEN [Mitchell Cove 32, 320-hp Caterpillar]
third. For almost two years we have not seen Corey Robertson
and PISCUTTAH II [South Shore 34, 300-hp John Deere], but she
was here and in another close race grabbed first from Robert Lee’s
JUSTIN & COLBY II [Mitchell Cove 35, 265-hp John Deere] with
third going to Scott Harper’s DIANA DAWN II [RP 35, 265-hp
John Deere]. There was only one entrant in Class E Nick Wiberg’s
MISS KATIE and would win her class, but he raced down with
Class F. There were eight boats entered in Class F and MS. ROSE
found herself in a real battle with Greg Lewis’ RACHEL IRENE
[Mitchell Cove 35, 430-hp Cummins]. At the line it was MS.
ROSE by a boat length over RACHEL IRENE and third went to
Jonathan Chipman’s KRISTIAN-TESSA [Osmond 35, 420-hp
Caterpillar]. There was only one boat in Class G Travis Lunt’s
STEPPIN UP [Mitchell Cove 35, 500-hp Volvo], so she raced with
the four boats in Class H. First over the line was FIRST TEAM
followed by Dwayne Sutherland’s SARAH ADAM [Osmond 38,
503-hp Caterpillar] and Troy Lewis’ FLO-RIDA [Calvin Beal 38,
500-hp John Deere]. In Class I MISTY went up against Bill Haass’
DUNCAN & BLAKE [Mitchell Cove 35, 500-hp MAN] and was
the winner in another tight race. It has been several years since
Leonard Young III has raced SILVER SPOON, but he came out
today and found himself with no competition in Class J, so he came
to the line with the four boats in Class K. After their catastrophic
turbo failure in Rockland, WILD, WILD WEST was back and
everyone was wondering would she make to the end of the course
this time. As she started the smoke poured out her exhaust pipe
and she looked well behind early on. However you could tell she
was gaining and the smoke was staying black. As she neared the
finish line she was able to just get by Jeff Eaton’s LA BELLA
BASS HARBOR LOBSTER BOAT RACES
23 June 2013
The following weekend a few of the regular racers headed
for Bass Harbor, but most of the competitors came right from the
immediate area. This is a non-points race, meaning that these races
do not count towards the year end standings. However, boats came
from as far-away as New Hampshire to the west’ard and Jonesport
to the east’ard. This race is about having a great time and the race
committee, headed by Wayne and Colyn Rich, along with several
others, have made it into one of the best races on the coast.
Some changes were made to the classes, but not really much
different. In the Work Boat Classes they opted to go back to the
four classes. In Class A, skiffs 16-feet and under with outboards
up to 30 hp, Operator 18 years and younger, there was just one
entrant Jason Bulder’s CHARLIE’S PRIDE [17-foot Seaway, 30hp Johnson]. In Class B, Inboards, outboards, or outdrives 31-60
hp, four boats went to the line and the first one down the course
was Jordan Hodgdon’s THUNDER STRUCK [16-foot wooden
skiff, 50-hp Tohatsu] followed by Nicholas Parlatore’s SHELBY
ANN [Aquasport 20, 50-hp Suzuki] second and Erin Hanley’s
ERIN’S WAY [Eastporter 20, 50-hp Mercury].There were two
boats registered in Class C, Inboards ,outboards or outdrives 61 hp
to 90 hp, which was won by Isaiah Sawyer’s LITTLE RASCAL
[Ellis 20, 70-hp Johnson] with Cody Lunt’s BLUE LOBSTER
[23-footer, 90-hp Honda] second. Seven boats were on the line
for Class D, Inboards ,outboards or outdrives 91 hp and over,
and Kenneth Seavey’s CAPTAIN CLYDE [Sea Ox 23, 200-hp
Evinrude] just outpaced Sue Snow’s SUEY-Q [Aquasport, 115-hp
Yamaha].
There were no entrants in Gasoline Class A, 4 & 6 cylinder 24
feet and over, Class C, Big block V-8, 28 feet and over, or Class
D, Anything turbocharged, 28 feet and over. There were only two
competitors in Class B, small block V-8, 24 feet and up, and this
was won by Wayne and Colyn Rich’s WIDE OPEN with Walter
Rich’s FROSTY PUNKIN second.
Next up were the Diesel Classes. Two boats were entered in
Class A and this was won by Neal Snow’s MISS CHIF [Mitchell
Boothbay, Rockland & Bass Harbor - Maine Lobster Boat Racing Newsletter - Page 9.
VITA [Northern Bay 38, 750-hp Iveco], who was in her first race
of the year. She was finished by her owner and was launched last
year, but too late to compete in the races around Penobscot Bay.
Jeff has said next year, he and his wife Karen, will be doing a
lot more racing. Third went to Perley Fog’s POSEIDON. There
were no entrants in Class L, but four came to the line for Class
M. James Thurlow’s FAMILY TRADITION [Osmond 42, 740hp Iveco] bested Christopher Sawyer’s PEYTON CHARLOTTE
[Young Brothers 45, 750-hp Iveco] by a boat length with David
Lunt’s STARBURST [MDI 45, 525-hp John Deere] right on her
transom. In Class M Wayne Gray’s OCEAN BOUNTY [formerly
Arvid Young’s TENARU RIVER, Young Brothers 45, 900-hp
Caterpillar] with Chris Moore’s LORI & TAMMY [Newman 46,
800-hp Caterpillar] and Jason Gordius’ MISS BEHAVIN’ AGAIN
third.
Twelve boats were signed up to race in the Fastest Mitchell
Cove Boat so they were divided into two heats. In the first heat
it was DUNCAN & BLAKE, RACHEL IRENE and STEPPIN’
UP the top three boats and in the second heat it was MS. ROSE,
SILVER SPOON and EDWIN MARSHALL. This was going
to make for a great race since there was only half a boat length
between MS. ROSE and SILVER SPOON when they crossed
in their heat. The six boats came to the line and this time it was
SILVER SPOON just getting by MS. ROSE with third going to
DUNCAN & BLAKE.
There was only one boat coming to the line for the Wooden
Boat Race, WIDE OPEN and FROSTY PUNKIN said that she
was not going to compete in the Gasoline Free-for-All, so WIDE
OPEN ran down the course for the win in both races.
The race committee than decided to combine the Diesel Freefor-All with the Fastest Lobster Boat Race, which had four boats
entered. This was won by MISTY, followed by LA BELLA VITA,
WIDE OPEN and MISS KATIE.
There were more than twenty boats that could race in the final
event of the day, Bass Harbor’s Fastest Lobster boat, however less
than half came to the line. Again it was another close race with just
feet separating their bows and the win went to RACHEL IRENE
with FAMILY TRADITION second and SARAH ADAM third.
Before the races got going, the race committee took a close
look at the finish line and made sure that it was perpendicular to
the sides of the course. In a couple of instances, especially the last
race of the day this was critical in making sure boats were given
their proper position. If you were not lined up with the finish line
it was easy for some to think differently.
Everyone had a great time, the racing was close and the only
question for the race committee was the finish order in the last
race. Several people want this event to become a points race, but
race organizers do not want to do that. They like it the way it is
and who can blame them. They have a great event. An interesting
question discussed was does points racing take some of the fun out
of lobster boat racing? If there was not a year-end winner would
more lobster boats that currently do not race come out? This all
stems around boats that do not race in their proper class. It used
to be easy to walk down look at an engine and now exactly what
it was pushing out for horsepower. Now that almost all diesel
engines are electronic that is not as easy. It has been a problem for
several years, but unfortunately there is no easy solution.
Now it is onto Moosebec Reach and Long Island.
TOUCH OF MADNESS entered as a 24-footer, but it was found that
she was only 22 feet. She was disqualified from all races run.
HAPPY HOUR, owned by Zach Donnell of Wells, competed in Class
G and was third at both Boothbay and Rockland.
WIDE OPEN, run by Wayne Rich, shows her stern to his father,
Walter, in his FROSTY PUNKIN.

LA BELLA VITA, owned by Jeff Eaton of Deer Isle, is a Northern
Bay 38 powered with a 750-hp Iveco.
Perley Fogg’s POSEIDON, a Calvin Beal 38 powered with a 800-hp
Caterpillar, competes with WILD WILD WEST in Class K.
Wayne Gray’s OCEAN BOUNTY, a Young Brothers 45 powered
with a 900-hp Caterpillar winning Diesel Class N.
One of the closest races of the day was between Skip Young’s
SILVER SPOON, a Mitchell Cove 37 powered with a 650-hp Volvo,
and MS. ROSE in the Fastest Mitchell Cove Boat race.
Cory Robertson’s PISSCUTTAH II, a South Shore 34 powered with
a 300-hp John Deere, getting by Robert Lee’s JUSTIN COLBY II, a
Mitchell Cove 35 powered with a 265-hp John Deere.
The start of Diesel Class F with MS. ROSE leading Greg Lewis’
RACHEL IRENE, a Mitchell Cove 35 powered
with a 430-hp Cummins.
