A letter from our pastor, Father Matt/Una carta de nuestro párroco, Padre Mateo
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend we conclude the Easter season with the feast of Pentecost, the fiftieth
day after Easter when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. After a week of
weeks (seven weeks), the saving action of
Jesus’ death and resurrection is completed
by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit unites us together to Christ so that we may share in His
resurrected and glorified life as well as be
strengthened to live out the faith and thus
renew the face of the earth. The Holy Spirit is given to
us in baptism and, through the sacrament of Confirmation, strengthens us in living in union with God and His
Church. When we are attentive to the Holy Spirit who
dwells within us, unites us, and works through the sacramental life of the Church, our lives bear great fruit.
The Church gives us a list of the twelve fruits of the
Holy Spirit, which comes from St. Paul: charity, generosity, joy, gentleness, peace, faithfulness, patience,
modesty, kindness, self-control, goodness, and chastity.
Let us pray for the sons and daughters of our parish who
are preparing to be strengthened and sealed by the gift
of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation this Friday. Also, if
you are an adult and have not yet been confirmed,
please call me or email me. I would like to help you be
confirmed.
Please keep in prayer Deacon Shaun Cieslik as he prepares to be ordained to the priesthood this Saturday. He
is one of our own, baptized and raised here at St.
John’s. He will be joined by four other young men in
becoming a priest who will serve our Diocese. Please
join us at his ordination at the Cathedral in Joliet on
Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and at his first Mass here at St.
John the Baptist on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Please pray
for his classmate, Deacon Keith Wolfe, who will be ordained with him and then sent here on June 22nd to be
our parochial vicar.
I would also like to remind you that we will be having a
procession for Corpus Christi, which celebrates the
Eucharist (the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus). Please join us in processing through the streets of
Winfield with the Blessed Sacrament, singing and praying, following the 11:30 a.m. (English) and 1:30 p.m.
(Spanish) Masses on Sunday, May 29th. Children who
have made their first Holy Communion this year are encouraged to wear their first communion outfits, sit in
the front at Mass, and have a special place in the procession. An ice cream social will follow each procession.
Know of my continued prayers for you, and please continue to pray for one another.
In Christ,
Fr. Matt
Me
Padre Mateo

Sacrificial Giving
We are ever grateful for your loving
generosity and sharing in the Ministries of Serving the Lord here at St.
John the Baptist.
Parish Collections
Abram tithed (giving at least 10%)
as a symbol that he depended totally on God. Moses said tithing
was holy and an act of worship.
Yes, even Jesus talked about
money because money is a necessary part of our lives and it is also
a necessary part of the viability of
the church. Our tithe is merely a
way to recognize that. Each family
should prayerfully discern their
own situation and understand that
tithing is God’s plan for supporting
the church and the poor. We are
ever grateful for your generosity
and sharing in the Ministries of Serving the Lord here at St. John the
Baptist. Please help us meet our
weekly needs of $25,619.

April 17………..$22,052.32

found someone who is so special and
generous… that he is almost like an angel on earth. This anonymous donor
wants to team up with you to continue
to help our struggling neighbors. For
every dollar you donate, our special
angel will match it – up to $50,000.
Please be generous. This is an opportunity to help someone who will have nowhere else to turn if Catholic Charities
isn’t there to help.

I
n today’s first reading we encounter the Holy Spirit who at Pentecost came
rushing in over Jesus’ followers like a powerful wind. It must have been a
frightening experience for them. But their great acts of prophetic witness began when the Spirit drew them out of their “comfort zones.” Jesus said the
Holy Spirit, like the wind, blows where it wills; into the lives of good stewards,
empowering them to perform wondrous acts of healing, reconciliation and
evangelization; encouraging them to proclaim the Gospel with boldness and
confidence. All of that is a little beyond the comfort zone where most of us
live our lives. This week, reflect on how the Holy Spirit may be calling you out
of your personal comfort zone.

Excerpts from “Holy Year of Mercy” - As a way to explain and participate
in the Pope’s proclamation of the “Extraordinary Jubilee,” our religious education
office has created a handbook entitled, “Holy Year of Mercy,” which contains ideas
for involving children, teens and adults “in the task of bringing God’s loving mercy to
others.” As space allows, we will put excerpts from the brochure in our church bulletin. If you’d like a copy of the handbook in its entirety, they are available in the narthex, parish office & the Religious Education office.

Eucharistic Adoration
Is Jesus calling you directly and personally to come
and spend an hour of your time before Him in the
Blessed Sacrament?
Have you ever thought of coming to Eucharistic Adoration on a regular basis? There are many blessings
and graces received by those who come before Our
Lord at Eucharistic Adoration. It is a wonderful,
peaceful time!
Jesus says, “Come to Me all you who labor and are
heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.”

A PRAYER TO THE SPIRIT
Spirit of Jesus,
poured out in flames of fire
upon your disciples
on the day of Pentecost,
we pray to you:

your faithful
so that they will announce

the world the wonders of the
salvation of God.

For Parents of All School Age Children,
Preschool through 8thGrade
As parents of school age children, we know our decision related to their education will have one enormous
impact on their future; shaping values, forming friendships, and preparing them for future higher education opportunities.
Have you ever thought the following?

Is my child getting the attention and support she needs at
school?
 Is my child challenged and working up to his full potential?
 Are fellow students providing a positive example and share
similar values?
 What is the real cost and value of a private school education?
If you have ever had one or more of these thoughts cross your mind, we encourage you to call Teri Hardesty, 630-668-0918, ext. 618, to learn more about
Project Student Shadow. What is Project Student Shadow? It is a program
that allows any student, preschool through eighth grade, to spend a day at St.
John the Baptist Catholic School in Winfield free of charge, participating in the
activities and curriculum of that day, talking to students about their real experience, and getting a sense of the overall environment at the school. Because
your child’s education is too important not to address immediately, we welcome guests into Project Student Shadow at any time of year. To schedule a
day for your child to shadow, please call 630-668-0918, ext. 618. We look forward to speaking with you!
