President
Happy Summer!
The “Dog Days” of summer are finally here! This warm
weather is a far cry from the long winter we had. I know
our volunteers and the animals appreciate it.
However, the hot days brings concerns for the animals. It
is important for people and pets to have plenty of water
and a place to cool off. Shade is very critical for all living
creatures, especially the ones with fur. We recently put
up tarps at the shelter for the dogs, built a condo and
sand box with a tent in our dog play run, and have a
fan turned on in our cat room. We need to make sure
everyone at the shelter is as comfortable as possible.
With recent events of dogs being left in cars in the warm
weather it is critical that the message get out there. Do
NOT leave you dogs in the car. Take a few minutes and
drop your pets off before going to the store or to visit
a friend. It only take minutes for a car to heat up and
potentially kill your beloved pet. Is it really worth it?

more about this event in our news section.
The warm weather is also bringing out many volunteers
to walk dogs and to hang out with our kitty cats. We
are pleased with the number of new volunteers and the
number of our “regulars” who we so love to see and
depend on. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The
NWT SPCA wishes everyone a very safe and wonderful
summer break. We hope to see you at the shelter and at
our upcoming events.
Cheers!

ECHOAge Partnership
We have entered into a partnership with ECHOAge, an online party and event service for birthdays,
weddings, showers, and the like! Recipients get to choose a gift they want and guests RSVP and contribute

Happy Tails
Happy Tails for the “Gump”!
Forrest Gump came to us late last summer from
Nunavut. This old guy did not have much of a life
being tied onto a snowmobile for most of it. When
we got him flown to us here in Yellowknife he settled
in pretty well right away. His true personality came
out immediately. He was a big old happy dog. Happy
to be able to run around. Happy to have two meals a
day and happy to be de-wormed!! He was full of them.
Forrest has a wonderful little happy dance he shows
off when he sees you. This sweet little quirk, along with
his sudden bursts of running at Mach 10 around in
circles, made him a favorite for all the dog walkers. He
also got along with just about every dog. He peed on
everything…because everything was his playground and he owned it!
Around the same time we got Forrest, Rocky was brought into our shelter. These guys became fast friends
and ended up living together in their couple’s apartment from day one. They balanced each other out very
well. They were Bert & Ernie! Forrest was loved by everyone that met him. His endearing qualities attached
to everyone’s heart and therefore he was going to need a very special home. No one wanted to see him
leave but then again everyone wanted him to find his forever home.
Well he found his forever home in British Columbia. Patricia and Don contacted us about Forrest in May
and after a couple conversations we knew he found his family. Thanks to Air Angels and West Jet, Forrest
flew to Vancouver on June 14th and is now, for the first time, enjoying rolling on the green grass and
playing with his new big sister named Skye, also a Malamute. He will be missed so very much by all of us
and very much by Rocky, his partner-in-crime. But we are VERY pleased with his adoption and thankful to
his new family for showering him with love and an excellent new life!

Appreciation
The NWT SPCA is a volunteer-based organization. Our volunteers work
extremely hard, putting in an average of 30 volunteer hours a day to keep both
the shelter, and the SPCA as an organization, functioning. Thank you to all
of our volunteers for their dedication and commitment to the betterment of
animals’ lives. We would like to recognize Sydney Friesen.
Sydney started volunteering several months ago and
completed her community service hours at the NWT
SPCA shelter. She kept coming to help out even after
all her hours were done, even through the bitter cold
days of winter. She always comes in with a smile and
she is eager to walk dogs or do any other tasks we
might have for her that day.
We will miss having her at the shelter next fall when
she goes on to study Engineering at University of
Victoria.

Programs & Services
The NWT SPCA has a variety of programs and services that benefit both the SPCA
and the animals in the North. For more information please contact the SPCA or visit
our website for forms.
SPCA Foster Program
The NWT SPCA is in need of foster homes. We have many animals that need safe, loving homes
for stays of a few days to a few weeks. We are looking for people who can care for animals
awaiting permanent adoption or transport to another rescue organization. Sometimes placement
is needed on a short notice.
Spay and Neuter Rebate Program
This program is intended to assist pet owners who adopt from the NWT SPCA with the cost of a
spay or neuter. When you adopt a puppy or kitten from us they are not sterilized as they are too
young. It is required however by the age of 6 months that you fulfill the adoption contract with
us and get that procedure done. This rebate helps with the cost of that. We offer a 30% rebate on
sterilization of your pet that was adopted from the NWT SPCA.
Spay and Neuter Loan Program
The NWT SPCA can provide an interest free loan to help with the spaying or neutering of your
cat or dog (not including vaccinations). The loan must be repaid within one year and each loan
can only be applied to one animal. Once you have repaid your loan, you may apply again for
assistance with another animal. Costs vary depending on the size of the animal and its medical
condition.
Community Spay and Neuter Program
For $200 a family can send in their dog to us and we will get the dog spayed or neutered, and
vaccinated if needed. The dog is then sent back to the community where it will not reproduce in
the future, thereby helping the dog population problem in the NWT communities.
HERO Campaign
For $75 you can sponsor a dog to fly south to a partner facility, or for $150 you can sponsor a
dog to fly to Yellowknife from northern communities, where they will surely be adopted. This is
intended for animals who have been at the shelter for extended periods of time, older animals,
animals that have behavioural issues and puppies who would not make it through the harsh
community winters.
SPCA Scholarship
Every year the NWT SPCA gives away a $500 scholarship to recognize and reward an individual
who contributes to the betterment of animals through education and extra-curricular activities.
