s the saying goes, “The third time’s the
charm”, and I certainly hope it holds true for
us. Welcome, everyone, to the third and final year of my tenure as Chair of FanimeCon. Like
all things in life, my time as Con Chair has had
many high points, and some low points. Throughout them all, I did my best to hold the convention
motto in my heart –“By Fans, For Fans” – as I led
our band of merry staffers on to bigger and better
events each year.
Let me take a moment to reminisce: FanimeCon was founded for the sole purpose of sharing
the joy and fun of Japanese animation with likeminded people. I seriously doubt that the founders
ever expected their little convention to grow to be
the huge success it is today. Last year, for example,
approximately 10,000 people walked through the
doors of the San Jose Convention Center to share
the fun with us. I can only guess at how many people we’ll be able to touch this year. Finding ways to
keep that many people entertained for four days
can be exhausting work, especially considering
that every one of the 500 staff members are volunteers. So, what is it that drives us, day after day,
to keep this semi-ordered chaos afloat?
You!
Well, that’s mostly the reason. Without all the
members who come to the convention year after
year, there wouldn’t be much of a point. However,
that’s not the only reason we’re here. The other
very big reason we’re here doing this is the same
reason you’re here, which is out of our love/passion/obsession/insanity for all things related to
anime and Japan.
What drove me here was watching Robotech
when I was younger. What pushed me forward was
watching Ranma 1/2 on my twelve-inch TV with
my sister. What got me on staff was wanting to
see and own everything and anything dealing with
Aa! Megami-sama. What kept me here is the discovery that there are so many people who share
my enthusiasm – and the feeling of “home” that
Fanime brings.
So cheers to whatever it was that led you into
our humble community! Welcome home to all our
dedicated fans, and to those of you who are first
timers, know that there will always be a place for
you here with us.

A
bout the same time every year, something
amazing happens. In Downtown San Jose,
between Guadalupe Parkway and First
Street, a transformation occurs inside the San
Jose Convention Center and surrounding areas. To
the general observer, this magical metamorphosis happens overnight, but to those caught in this
marvelous conversion, they know it was well over
a year in the making.
Welcome to FanimeCon 2008. This is the time
of year for fans of all different shapes, sizes, colors,
and backgrounds to come together from all over
the world. The spectacular change that happens
overnight is a community is reborn. We may know
each other from chats across the globe, each one
behind his own computer screen. But now is the
time to meet face to face and have a lively conversation over lunch in the hallway or sing a duet in
the karaoke room. Here is a place where everyone
surrounding you has something in common with
you: a love of anime and the culture of Japan. We
may all enter the building for different reasons,
but it is that core commonality that makes us feel
like we’ve come home.
Once more we grace the halls of the San Jose
McEnery Convention Center, the Hilton, the Marriott, and other surrounding hotels. We come by car,
train, plane, light rail, or any other means necessary to get here. We bring back old familiar faces,
as well as new ones just entering the scene. We
even bring in those completely unaware of this
community by allowing them to see brightly colored costumes or simply large groups of people
having a ball. In these halls, 2-D characters come
to life through the hard work of our members,
treasures and rarities can be found in the Dealers
Room, and maybe new stars can be born in our
various events.
Fanime has been and always will be “By Fans,
For Fans”, and I would be remiss in my duties to
not mention the ones who made this whole transformation possible. Though we couldn’t do it without the thousands of members that pour through
our gates every year, it is our staff that I would
like to recognize. Even before Fanime 2007 came
to an end, this staff was already gathering ideas
to make Fanime 2008 even better. For an entire
year, this staff has worked hard to make sure that
this is the best Fanime there has ever been, and
that every year we are going to get bigger and better, while maintaining our core ideas. “By Fans, For
Fans” means that we are trying to share with others what we like as well. It means that in the end,
if we wouldn’t enjoying watching, reading it, listening to it, or buying it, then we wouldn’t try to force
it upon you, our members. And just as we have a
diverse group of members with different tastes and
interests, we have a diverse group of staffers to
help you out.
So this year, as we bring back old favorites and
try out new things, bear with us if there are a few
bumps along the way. We are constantly trying to
improve as we grow, and we hope that you continue down this path with us.
As always, take care, be safe, and have a fun and
fantastic Fanime.

GAINAX
Twenty years ago, anime fans were
awed by a ground-breaking animated
movie, Royal Space Force: Wings of
Honneamise. This was GAINAX’s first
title. GAINAX began as a group of
amateur animators who funded their
own projects. An inexperienced crew
in their twenties started up their own
animation studio, made their debut
with an animated movie, and left a legendary mark in animation history. For
over twenty years, GAINAX produced a
wide variety of graphic titles in various
genres. The dedicated staff members
strove to create titles that were truly
entertaining.
GAINAX has released many popular
favorites, including Gunbuster, Nadia
– Secret of Blue Water, Neon Genesis
Evangelion, and FLCL. GAINAX staff
members poured their blood and souls
into each and every title. Though each
creator is a talented individual, GAINAX
couldn’t have created these wonderful
titles without the collective efforts of
all the creators combined.
Gurren Lagann is the most recent
title from GAINAX. New staff members
filled the key posts. This ambitious series was created from the ideas formulated from the fresh, young creators in
GAINAX. In it, GAINAX tackled many
© GAINAX, KAZUKI NAKASHIMA/Aniplex, KDE-J, TV TOKYO, DENTSU
new challenges, but the spirit that
flows through this title is uniquely GAINAX – devising ways to satisfy viewers by creating an entertaining
story and world. Interesting characters like Kamina, Simon, and Yoko fill the cast. Gunmen robots, especially the Gurren Lagann, also thrash about on the screen in the exciting battle scenes.
While GAINAX mainly produces animation, they have also expanded their efforts into computer games,
figures, publishing, and events, so they could seriously create things not only the fans enjoy, but they also
enjoy as well. Even now, GAINAX continues to make new products.

Production began on the animated movie, Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise, in 1984. GAINAX was founded the same year. Royal Space Force: Wings of
Honneamise was released in 1987, becoming an instant cult classic as well as the
legendary “feature-length animation movie created by a group of anonymous youth.”
Yamaga-san has also garnered praise for his screenwriting, including Aim for the Top!
and Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket.

Anime Hell harkens back to the days where film enthusiasts held gatherings and showed film
clips, trailer reels, and out of print cartoons and cult films to their friends and the public (in the days
of actual celluloid film).
Anime Hell in its modern form began over a decade ago, as a presentation put on at various anime cons. It’s sort of a visual disk-jockey kind of thing – short clips of bits from Japanese cartoons,
commercials, movie trailers, educational films, short animated films, pop culture detritus, bleeps,
blunders, and practical jokes. To maybe a few people’s surprise, it became pretty popular. Anime
Hell now has many shows throughout the year, produced and hosted by a cabal of friends who lend
their own creative bent to each of their shows. The quick-paced and free-flowing nature of each
Anime Hell show can’t be experienced anywhere else, not even online. In addition to entertaining
audiences at shows, the Anime Hell crew is dedicated to celebrating, archiving, and popularizing the
bizarre and hilarious bits of human pop culture. Anime Hell is thrilled to be bringing its bit of showmanship back to FanimeCon, so please – no poking with sharp objects.
Your mindful guide on this celebrity tour is Ryan Gavigan. Ryan is one of the founders and con
chairs of Anime Central and has been attending and staffing various anime conventions for over 15
years. But in reality, he enjoys making parodies and collecting goofy stuff, so his gravitation towards
Anime Hell production seemed pre-ordained. He has been hosting Anime Hell at a number of Midwestern anime conventions and debuted Anime Hell on the West Coast at FanimeCon 2007.

Gilles Poitras is the Access Services Librarian at Golden Gate University in the San Francisco area. He is best known to anime fans for his three books: The Anime Companion, Anime Essentials and The Anime Companion 2, as well as his writing for Newtype USA and
Otaku USA. He also sits on the senior board of Mechademia, an annual scholarly anthology
of essays on anime, manga and fan culture. Gilles also has done presentations of anime
for Japan - US friendship groups, public libraries, conventions, and all day workshops for librarians. He introduced anime films at the Smithsonian and even taught a course for eight
weeks about the subject for Pixar staff. He first discovered anime while walking through San
Francisco’s Japantown in 1977. As a fan of foreign films, he was instantly attracted by the
use of cinematic effects in ways that he had never seen in animation before. This began an
interest in anime that continues to grow after all of these years. He has two Masters degrees,
one in Library Science from the University of California at Berkeley and one in Theology from
Pacific School of Religion also in Berkeley. His background in theology has proven beneficial
in that it gave him the scholarly skills to look at anime and manga with a disciplined eye. This
has enabled him to employ anime and manga as a window into Japanese culture.
“One important thing I learned studying religion is that one should never assume that
something from another culture means what it would in one’s own culture. Humanity is far
too diverse and interesting for that to be the case.”

Feudal Stories
written by
Gilles Poitras

F
eudal Japan spans over 680
years of Japanese history from
1185 to 1868. In this essay I’ll
mention several anime, manga and
historical works. These are all available in translation. I will not list items
that are out of print, with the exception of some Geneon titles that are still
easily available. A major characteristic
of feudal Japan was that the Emperor
reigned in Kyoto but had very little political power; the samurai had taken
control of the nation from the nobility,
while the prestige of the imperial line
kept the noble families from being
abolished. Historians divide the years
of feudal Japan into several eras. The
first is the Kamakura Period, 1185 –
1333. During this time, power resided
in the Kamakura shogunate, named
after its capital. When the forces supporting Emperor Go-Daigo overthrew
the shogun (these events are described in the chronicle known as The
Taiheiki), it looked for a short time as
if Imperial rule was re-established,
and the Muromachi Period began.
However, another samurai leader took
control in a couple of years, and so the
rule of the Ashikaga shoguns branded
this era. The Ashikaga ruled not by
large armies but by a complex series
of alliances that kept them in power
for some time. Over time the alliances
weakened, and many daimyo, samurai
leaders with large holdings, became
increasingly independent. The Hakkenden: Legend of the Dog Warriors is
set during this time, with episode two
beginning in 1458.
In 1467 armed conflict broke out
between two factions of the Ashikaga
over who would be the next shogun.
This is the beginning of the Sengoku
Jidai, the Warring States Era that
marked the remaining years of the
Muromachi Period. There are few anime or manga available that are set
before this conflict, but starting with
the Sengoku Jidai, we have several to
choose from. The two most famous
are only set in the period and rarely
touch on the events and personages
of the times; these are InuYasha and
Princess Mononoke. There are many
titles that deal with events, places
and personages from this time. One of
the most interesting of these is actually set in modern times but involves
the spirits of warriors who continue to
carry out their duties either as spirits
or flesh and blood people. This is Mirage of Blaze, a tale based on a light
novel series and aimed at a female
audience. A crucial part of the story
is the complex relations between the
major players who have lived through
many lives over the centuries carrying
out their duties for their lord. There is
a lot of dramatic supernatural stuff in
this one and plenty of pretty boys for
the girls. The most detailed manga set
in this period is Path of the Assassin,
which follows the famous Tokugawa
general, Hattori Hanzo, as he serves
Tokugawa Ieyasu during some of the
most exciting and dangerous times
in Japanese history. Hanzo is also famous as a ninja in many tales, including this one. Given that this is a period

The art theme for Fanime 2008 is feudal Japan, and

some material about the theme. Mr. Poitras is giving
several informative panels at the convention, so check
out the schedule and the Panels section (page 23) to
learn more.
of war, we can expect some ninja action. Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma
is one such tale, in this case involving
a conflict between two ninja, one of
whom has some nasty supernatural allies.
After the Sengoku Jidai was the
short Azuchi-Momoyama Period, lasting from 1568 to 1600. In Wrath of the
Ninja, Oda Nobunaga has allied himself
with demonic powers to gain control of
the land. The only things stopping him
are certain ninja forces. The historical
Nobunaga distrusted ninja and actually fought against them, so it’s not
surprising to see such a conflict in an
anime. After the Azuchi-Momoyama
Period was the Edo Period, also known
as the Tokugawa Period, named after
either the capital of the Tokugawa shoguns or their family name. This is the
period where we find the largest number of titles. In fact, almost all the historical anime, manga and live action
movies available in translation are set
in this era. For ease of discussion, I’ll
divide the Edo Period up into very early, middle and very late.
The early years are represented by
several works. One is the manga, Vagabond, a tale of the famous swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. This manga
is so good that it won an award from
the Japanese Ministry of Culture. An
anime that has Musashi in part of it
is Shura no Toki which, as it covers
several generations of a martial arts
family, is a tale that spans the entire
Edo Period. Another tale is Samurai
Deeper Kyo with its weird critters and
supernatural elements. It also includes
some familiar figures, such as an older
Hattori Hanzo. Of course, we can’t have
an Edo Period tale without a few ninja;
in fact, we have several tales with lots
of ninja. The one with the earliest time
setting is Basilisk, based on the Kouga
Ninja Scrolls novel by Yamada Futaro.
This novel, written in the 1950s, is
what started the whole genre of “uglier-than-sin supernaturally powered
ninja” tales. One of the most famous
people of the early Edo Period rumored to have been a ninja was Yagyu
Jubei, who is a major character in two
manga, Samurai Legend and Yagyu
Ninja Scrolls, and in the Ninja Resurrection anime. The two manga have
ninja action without any supernatural
elements, even if their abilities are exaggerated. By the way, Yamada Futaro
also wrote the story Yagyu Ninja Scrolls
is based on. In anime, there is another
ninja named Jubei who is not a Yagyu.
This is the Jubei in Ninja Scroll. We get
hints in this show that the setting is the
early Edo Period.
Manga set the middle of the Edo
Period are Blade of the Immortal, Satsuma Gishiden, Samurai Executioner,
and Lone Wolf and Cub. Anime titles set
somewhere in this period are Samurai
Champloo and Tsukikage Ran. These
two titles are heavily influenced by
Japanese chanbara films (often called
“samurai films” in the West). Both play
fast and loose with actual history and
are lots of fun. Also set in this period
are Requiem From The Darkness and
Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales. The
last two link with a popular genre of
writing, supernatural tales. The kabuki
theater had many such tales, and in
the Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales series is “Yotsuya Ghost Story”, one of the
creepiest kabuki plays ever written.
Then we approach the end of the
Edo Period, known as the Bakumatsu,
which began in 1853 when Commodore Perry sailed his ships into Edo Bay.
This is when the Tokugawa Shogunate
started to lose control of Japan and
conflict broke out, leading to the return
of the Emperor to power in 1868. The
best-known anime set in this time is
Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal in the
Rurouni Kenshin series. Another title
is Dagger of Kamui, which has ninjas.
Yep, until the end of the Edo Period,
stories still have ninjas. One of the
most famous groups that existed in
this time was the Shinsengumi, a special police unit established in Kyoto.
For a history of the group, I highly recommend the book called Shinsengumi
by Romulus Hillsborough. One such
story available both as an anime and
manga is Peacemaker. This is about
Ichimura Tetsunosuke, a real member
who survived the conflicts. However,
my favorite Shinsengumi manga has
got to be Kaze Hikaru, a josei (young
women’s) manga about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to join up and
take revenge on the killer of her father
and brother. Those who know the actual history, and the Japanese readers
did, know that the tale will be tragic,
but the telling is good. With the end
of the Edo Period, Japan transformed
itself into a modern state, and the feudal period ceased to exist.
I urge you to check out all of the titles I mention. I am sure you will find
many great tales to enjoy. And don’t
forget to share the ones you like with
others.

high. Without a doubt, their songs are appealing to all J-Pop listeners, not just
to the Visual-Kei fanatics, and they even have a potential of being accepted by
the audiences who are not usually familiar with music from foreign countries. It
will never be too much to say that their live performances are truly entertaining
shows where the individual band members enjoy demonstrating their unique
personalities. Don’t miss their first US performance! They’re playing Sunday at
the Civic Auditorium. Doors open at 7 PM, and show starts at 8 PM.
In addition, we’re greeting the band with a Meet the Guests reception on Sunday,
and we’re hosting an autograph session on Monday! For details on how to get
tickets for these events, please visit an Info Desk.

Enjoy the finest local performers around at the MusicFest concert on Friday!
We’ve got four amazing bands from or inspired by Japan, all ready to rock the Civic Auditorium. Don’t miss the show!
Doors open at 5:30 PM, and show starts at 6:00 PM.
All Ages
Derrik, Tom, and Koko thought they were on their way to just another Local Punk
Rock Show, when suddenly a burst of light sucked them into an alternate reality. They
wandered around dazed for some time, until they realized... in this reality, they are
the Rock Stars and must create an authentic Punk Rock Show for the people here.
If these people don’t experience Rock, they may be doomed to enslavement, forever
trusting their devotion to pop and techno, which is only cool if you have robot ears!
They must fight for the freedom of humankind, so that they too may have a chance to
return home, and once again, be free. You can help.

Thee Out Mods
Thee Out Mods was formed in the
summer of 2006 with three Japanese rockers – SANA (Vocals), YOSHIKI (Bass), and
KENNY (Drums) – as the band produced by Ace
(lead singer of Tokyo Smog) from 7 Samurai
Records. SANA’s straight and ironic expression
of the youth generation is powerfully combined
with the band’s intense rock ’n’ roll sound. Their
sharp, stylish, high-energy performances have
earned them a committed fan following in Los
Angeles, even though most of their songs are
performed in Japanese.
In April 2007, they toured to support LiN
CLOVER (with former members of GACKT Job),
highlighted by a knock-out performance at the
famous Slim’s live house in San Francisco.

LYV (ライヴ)
LYV, formed officially in 2007 as the solo
project of Christian Hart (Vocals/Guitar), currently consists of active members, M. Alexander (Guitar), Alan D. (Bass), and James Akin
(Drums). With a range of music from hard-hitting rock, to soaring pop, and even epic ballads, LYV continues to wow audiences with
their “no holds barred” live performances.
With songs written in both Japanese and English, LYV has constantly turned heads with
their unique image and musical style. Giving
credit to the name, LYV strives to express the
broad spectrum of music and emotional topics
through their live performances.
In November 2007, LYV independently released the first album, “Voyager”, and received
excellent reviews. Already, LYV has begun
cracking down to put out their second album
release, “{INDIVISUALIST}”. Sparking interest
from fans and labels worldwide, LYV continues
to push the expectations one has from a “Japanese Rock Band”.

GHOST TOWNE
GHOST TOWNE is a three-person band, consisting of Nobu Kawamura on vocals
and guitar, Yasu Koyama on drums, and Steven Wu on bass. Though GHOST TOWNE’s
music is generally defined as ‘rock’, they have many influences, including classic 70’s
rock, blues, funk, soul, and psychedelic. They have performed all over California at
bars, clubs, and conventions. They will also open for GREAT WHITE at their Crash Mansion show on June 20th. They perform every chance they get, many times for free,
with many local Los Angeles and San Francisco bands. Their unique style and influence bring in a wide range of audiences: not just lovers of Asian culture and music,
but also those who enjoy that classic rock feel.

other than to be lit with a combustion device, are considered incendiary
devices.
State law prohibits concealed weapons. No concealed weapons are allowed
under any circumstances.
Permitted Weapons:
•
All permitted weapons shall be subject to approval by Safety on Site
(SoS) staff.
Prop/Toy Guns
Prop guns that are easily identifiable as toys may be permitted if the prop
gun possesses no moving parts and is clearly marked with a non-removable
orange tip or colored in a bright safety color.
•
Prop Flail Weapons
•
Staves, Staffs, Wooden Swords
Prop flail weapons made of foam and/or paper may be permitted as long as
they are ornamental and in no way used as offensive or defensive weapons.
Staves, bo sticks, bokken, shinai, and wooden swords shall be considered
prop weapons and may be permitted as long as they are ornamental and in
no way used as weapons.
Purchasing a Weapon:
•
•
•
•
•
All weapon sales shall follow Federal, State, and Local laws, statutes, and regulations.
Weapons shall not be sold to minors.
All weapons sold shall be in a box, bag, or other device rendering it
ineffective and inaccessible and shall remain within applicable laws
for concealed weapons.
Weapons shall not be carried around loose.
If a weapon is purchased at an event, you shall immediately remove
the weapon from convention-occupied space; or, if the weapon
meets the requirements to be peace-bonded, you shall immediately
have the weapon peace-bonded.
In order to carry a weapon at the convention, you must be in costume.
All weapons that are carried, either in hand or on/in a costume,
must meet the requirements to be peace-bonded and must be
peace-bonded immediately upon entering the convention.
Carrying a weapon during Masquerade:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Staff, guests, and members who are participating in the Masquerade and wish to use a weapon that is not otherwise permitted shall
contact the Safety on Site (SoS) office for approval.
Any weapon approved for Masquerade but not approved for the
general convention shall be securely transported to Masquerade in a
box, bag, or other device rendering it ineffective and inaccessible.
Once at Masquerade, the weapon shall be checked in with the Masquerade Weapons Master.
When the individual participating in Masquerade is ready to perform, the individual shall check out the weapon from the Masquerade Weapons Master.
Once the performance is over, the individual shall check the weapon
back in with the Masquerade Weapons Master.
The Masquerade Weapon Master shall maintain the weapon until
the end of Masquerade.
When Masquerade is over, the individual shall pick up their weapon
from the Masquerade Weapons Master and securely transport the
weapon back to their hotel room or vehicle.
Violations of the Weapons Policy
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Violations include, but are not limited to, the following:
Carrying a weapon that does not meet the requirements to be
peace-bonded
Failure to have a weapon peace-bonded
Removing the peace-bonded tag on a weapon
Brandishing a weapon
Violations of the Weapons Policy shall result in disciplinary action,
including but not limited to the following:
A verbal warning
Expulsion from the convention
Reporting you to the local authorities
Peace-Bonding
Who:
Any staff, guest, or member who wishes to carry a weapon as
part of their costume shall have that weapon peace-bonded.
This is regardless of any training, credentials, age, maturity, or
status as a general member, staff member, or guest.
What: Peace-bonding is the process of approving a weapon to be carried by staff, guest, or member who is in costume.
When: Peace-bonding shall be done as soon as possible after entering
convention-occupied space. This includes all public hallways of
the hotels, anywhere in the convention center, and any space
set aside for convention use.
Where: Peace-bonding stations are located at the exit to Registration,
the exit to the Dealers Room, selected Information Desks, and
the Safety on Site (SoS) office located in Willow Glen III on the
second floor of the Marriott.
How:
Peace-bonding is done by having a Safety on Site (SoS) member examine the weapon in question to ensure that the weapon
meets the requirements and guidelines set forth by the Weapons Policy. Weapons that meet the FanimeCon Weapons Policy
requirements and guidelines shall be tagged with a nondestructive peace-bonding tag. Tagging the weapon tells FanimeCon
staff that you have read, understood, and agreed to follow the
Weapons Policy and that the weapon is approved to be carried
at the convention.

Food at Fanime
Have a great convention!
No celebration or convention is complete without food. This
year, FanimeCon will feature more food than ever before,
right in the middle of all the action!
The FaniMaid Cafe is located on the second floor of the
convention center near the Hilton. From 11 AM to 7 PM
on Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy sandwiches and
hot food while chatting with maids in authentic costumes.
At the Civic Auditorium, concession windows will sell
drinks and snacks, so have a side of nachos or garlic
fries while watching the Cosplay Spectacular and MusicFest performances.
Shoppers can stop for a bite to eat at the back of the
Dealers Room, and on Saturday and Sunday, food
stands along the Concourse of the main convention
center will tempt you with sushi, dim sum, Lollicup boba
tea, and Dippin’ Dots ice cream. Also on Saturday and
Sunday, the Market Terrace on the balcony near the
Marriott will host a grill with hot dogs and hamburgers.
Due to popular demand for extended hours, a food stand
will be open outside Exhibit Hall 2 (the gaming hall)
from 7 AM until 4 AM. Vending machines will be available around the clock in the back of Exhibit Hall 2, and
Starbucks will stay open continuously from Friday morning until Monday night.
With this many food options in the convention center, stopping to eat doesn’t mean stepping out of Fanime, so make
these food choices a fulfilling part of your convention experience!

Remember to eat!
Stay hydrated!
(But drink water,
not alcohol.)
Be sure to sleep!
(But do it in a safe place,
such as a hotel room.)

pler of FanimeCon and sometimes a spectacle in its own right. It is both alpha and

music videos, game shows, cosplay skits,
dance performances, Fanime survival tips,

Honor, and much more!
For 2008, we introduce Stage Zero @
Night! Night owls will no longer miss out
since Stage Zero will run non-stop during
the time between the opening and closing ceremonies. With something always
happening on Stage Zero, we can’t fit it
all in the program guide, so check out the
schedules for more information. Stage

video rooms and the Dealers Room; you
can’t miss this!
Game Show
The Fanime Game Show is back! Come
check out all the fun at Stage Zero! We’ll

prizes at stake. We pick most of our contestants from the audience, so come on
down to test your skills and reflexes!
Charity Challenge –
Compounded!
At FanimeCon, we enjoy the luxury of
great entertainment, and luxuries are even
more enjoyable when shared. With that in
mind, FanimeCon holds an annual charity
auction. This year, we’ll double the enjoyment with double the charities and double the dollars: this time, the FanimeCon
Board of Directors will match charity auction proceeds! FanimeCon 2008 is proud
to support the Springstone Schools and
the Asian Perinatal Advocates.
The Springstone Schools serve students
with Asperger’s Syndrome, Non-verbal
Learning Disability, and other cognitive
challenges by providing an educational
environment that accepts these students
and teaches them skills that will help
them lead meaningful and productive
lives. (www.thespringstoneschool.org and
www.schigh.org)
Asian Perinatal Advocates promotes
healthy families and prevents child abuse
and domestic violence in the Asian and
Pacific Islander communities by providing
family support services, education, community building, and leadership development to Asian families in San Francisco
with newborn infants and children under
five years of age. (www.apasfgh.org)
To support these charities, our generous dealers and Guests of Honor donate
merchandise and unique creations to the
auction. Don’t forget to look for the Wii!
During the convention, the Guests of Honor will play a Nintendo Wii on Stage Zero,
and the signed console will be available
for auction! Visit the FanimeCon booth
in the Dealers Room to browse the other
donations and submit a bid. Items receiving more than five bids will earn a spot in
an upbeat, fast-action live event at Stage
Zero. Check the schedule for the live auction time, and come support the Springstone Schools and Asian Perinatal Advocates. We challenge you to bid high and
bid often!

Featuring a diverse group of passionate

of friendly competition and the excitement
of vocal performance to the convention
stage. Come sign up for our contest, or just
cheer on your fellow fans!
The contest consists of two rounds.
In the qualifying round, up to 30 acts will
compete for the chance to advance to the
finals. The best of these will qualify for the
finals, from which the winners will be selected. Finalists receive cool prizes, and
the winner also receives a beautifully customized microphone trophy and the honor
of performing at the FanimeCon Cosplay
Spectacular.
Karaoke Gong Show
Is your love of singing tempered by a
strong desire for mockery? Then you’re in
luck! Making its Fanime debut this year,
the Karaoke Gong Show is for the brave
and the truly masochistic who are hell-bent
on creating the worst and most amusing
feats of bad singing imaginable. When an
act becomes utterly unbearable, the gong
is struck, and the contestants are escorted
off-stage.
You’ll have to try extra hard to earn
that coveted Gong! Anything goes (short
of disrespectful, inappropriate, or destructive behavior, of course)! You must adhere
to convention rules at all times. Contestants may perform either individually or in
groups. Although we use the term loosely,

awards will be given out for particularly
special demerits, with a “Worst of Show”

awful?
Dance
Don’t waste all your energy walking up
and down the convention hall; save some
for the dances! From the rambunctious
rave to the beauteous Black and White
Ball, the dances are where the party’s at!
The rave, held annually, is where fans
let loose! Grab your glow sticks, and dance
to your favorite J-Pop and J-Rock songs all
night long! The rave is fairly lenient about
the dress code, so dress in your coolest
clothes, and dance the night away!
Black and White Ball
Time to polish those dancing shoes:
the Black and White Ball is once again
coming to Fanime! This ballroom is 50%
bigger than the room used last year, and
it will have a real dance floor instead of a
wooden parquet surface. The dress code
is formal to semi-formal. For gentlemen,
a suit or tux is preferred, but a dress shirt
and slacks will meet minimum requirements. For ladies, an evening gown or a
formal dress is preferred, or a dress skirt
and blouse at the minimum. High heels or
dress flats are required, and skirts must
reach the knees or lower. Cosplay is welcome, but the costume must be formal,
such as gothic lolita or aristocrat style
clothing, and please refrain from bringing
props or bags. To match the theme, black
and white dress is encouraged, but colors
are also welcome as long as the outfit is
formal.
Don’t know how to dance? No problem!
During the day, classes will teach many
styles of dance, including waltz, salsa, foxtrot, cha-cha, swing, and two-step. Each
lesson plan will assume that dancers are
beginners, and casual clothing is fine, so
come as you are.
The Black and White Ball will draw on
a diverse playlist with anime, J-Pop, and
video game music, as well as some American swing music, all of which can be used
}

for ballroom dancing. Tango, rumba, and
mambo will be thrown in for intermediate dancers, plus some conga just for fun.
Please check the schedule for lesson and
dance times. Let’s have a ball!

The Song Remains The Same
This feature-length “lost episode”
was adapted from the Cowboy Bebop
video game for the Playstation 2. The
game hit Japan in 2005 and was never
released in the US. This fansub is making its world premiere at FanimeCon
2008.
Synopsis: Struggling as usual to make ends meet, our favorite space cowboys hope to nab some of the unusually high number of bounties that have been posted recently.
That is, except for Faye Valentine, who decides she would
rather go hunting for a famous space pirate’s hidden treasure instead. Faye leaves the Bebop and crosses paths with an inexperienced bounty hunter named Kent, who unknowingly possesses
what may be the most significant clue to the treasure’s location…
Meanwhile, Kent’s hotheaded partner (and twin sister) Bianca butts heads with Spike as they pursue the same bounty.
But after drawing the attention of a disgruntled ex-cop with an
intense dislike of bounty hunters, Spike and Bianca find themselves reluctantly teaming up in order to survive.

SURVIVE STYLE 5+
Su-Wan must keep her
job as a tutor to pay for
her college tuition, but
she finds trouble when
she is hired to teach a
troublemaking rich boy
who aims to make her
quit.
Several years of torment
from bullies and classmates catches up with
Juzo and triggers a dramatic split in his personality, transforming him
into the vengeful Number 13.
A retiring policeman’s
attempt to frame a triad
kingpin for murder puts
him and his partners on
a collision course with
the kingpin himself.
Five unique and different
stories come together in
this film about crazy hyponotists, advertising executives, British hitmen,
unkillable spouses, and
a man who thinks he is
a bird.
