GOLEEN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COUNCIL WELCOME FINNISH GROUP
On May 16th a group of 12 primary school children and 7 adults will arrive from the
Finnish village of Vihtijarvi as part of a cultural exchange with Lissagriffin NS. The
group will also be hosted with the support of Goleen & District Community Council and
will be treated to an array of sightseeing and cultural experiences. A visit to Mizen
Head Signal Station is a must, along with the Planetarium in Schull, as well as an
afternoon on Barleycove Beach, if the weather permits and Three Castle’s Head. The
children will be welcomed into the school and are to join with the students in a felt
making session with Mary O’Meara and are looking forward to try out Hurling
organised by our local GAA club. The four day visit will kick off at Goleen Community
Centre with the U12 Mizen Set Dancers, who have been competing in various events
around the county, and we will be trying to get the Finns involved as well! If you would
like to help us welcome our Finnish visitors, we will be at the Community Centre from
around 3pm on Sunday 17th May.
TIDY TOWNS COMPETITION AND THE HERITAGE AWARD
It is time yet again once more to get the application forms ready for filling as The
SuperValu TidyTowns Competition encourages the efforts of local people, who bring
huge benefits to their communities. ‘It recognises all the work of the TidyTowns
volunteers, from the planning stage to the completion of projects. It gives communities
a vehicle to come together to effect change where they live. Each year for the last four
years this competition has attracted over 800 entries from cities, towns and villages
throughout the country and we hope that this impetus will be sustained this year. In
conjunction with this competition the Heritage Council sponsors "The Heritage Award"
which seeks to "promote a greater awareness of the value of our heritage to our
quality of life and to sustainable economic development". As such projects, that
benefit heritage, involve the community and motivate people, will always be in the
running for the Award. Applications for the Heritage Award must be made online via
www.heritagecouncil.ie by 22nd May 2015, also the same closing date for Tidy Town
applications (see www.tidytowns.ie for more information).

Darkness into Light Walk - Saturday 9th May Starting at 4.15am,
and crossing the line just as dawn broke, the phenomenon that is Darkness
Into Light, the annual 5km walk/run, celebrated its seventh year on Saturday
May 9th, with 80 venues across Ireland and beyond. Over 100.000 people
worldwide took part. This year saw Castletownbere host their first walk for
Darkness Into Light. People travelled from all over the locality to do the walk. A crowd of
over 500 completed it, runners first and then walkers. Ciara Carroll, Schull and Bere Island
helped to organise and bring the walk to Castletownbere for the first time. Thank you to
everyone who helped make it such an
amazing experience. V. Carroll
