Percy Sykes Dies
Smith would later remark on the episode that sealed Sykes’
legend: “Only for Percy Sykes, Tulloch would have died.”
Such extraordinary treatment is regarded as one of the principal
factors behind Smith’s dominance of racing in Sydney, their
partnership and close friendship spanning three decades.
Another of Sykes’ most famous successes came when he nursed
Igloo (Arctic Explorer), the Group Two winner and Melbourne Cup
(Gr 1, 3200m) second, back to full health from a devastating break
down at Perth in 1971.
The gelding shattered sesamoids in both front legs but was able
to return 22 months later to carry 61.5kg to victory over 2,000
metres thanks to the work of the great vet.
Sykes pioneered a number of treatments now commonplace
throughout the industry, such as feed supplements, standing
castrations and the use of penicillin. He was also among the first to
tap into the incredible potential of monitoring blood tests to assess
how a horse was responding to training, a technique of which T J
Smith was a big fan.
His influence also helped shape breeding in Australia when, in
1989, he and good friend and Arrowfield Stud founder John Messara
were first introduced to Danehill (Danzig).
Messara had soon moved beyond the fact the stallion was back
at the knee and acquired him when Sykes pointed out the same fault
had been shared by the great Star Kingdom.

UNENCUMBERED DELIVERS MILLIONS JOY
Brilliant juvenile Unencumbered (2c, Testa Rossa) continued
his phenomenal debut season of racing with a dominant win in the
Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic on the Gold Coast, his fifth win
from six starts.
“This is just a dream come true”, said part owner Steve Elliot.
“It is just amazing how things come together and the story behind
Unencumbered is a perfect example.
“When he went through last year’s sales, he was passed in during
the Friday session but both Bjorn Baker and I really liked him, we just

weren’t sure if we could afford him.
“We went and checked him again on the Sunday, still thought a
great deal of him and managed to get him for $70,000.
“Unencumbered just has a great walk so it was easy to be
impressed by him, in fact I joked to Bjorn that in my opinion he was
the prettiest horse you could ever see”.
From the More Than Ready mare Blizzardly, Unencumbered was
offered at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast sale by Newhaven
Park, the famed venue that also offered this year’s sale topping lot.
Elliot originally thought about racing Unencumbered by himself

Winning connections of Unemcumbered but eventually got a few friends and wider acquaintances involved.
“Racing is such a gamble”, explained Elliot.
“You can spend huge money buying horses and there is always a
chance that you end up looking like a bit of an idiot.
“The key to racing is to have fun being involved and to enjoy the
experience.
“Nothing beats being able to share the joys and success, when
you have it, with friends and that is the case with Unencumbered.
“There are about fourteen of us in the horse, including syndicate
members, and it is great to share the success with everyone”.
Elliot has tasted feature race success in the past, with Albert The
Fat’s 2011 Emirates Stakes win at Flemington a highlight.
“Winning one of the big races during Melbourne Cup week with
Albert The Fat was an extraordinary experience”, said Elliot.
“Anyone involved in racing dreams of that opportunity.

“He was a big price that day but we were really confident based
on his trackwork the Tuesday before”.
Does this win match up?
“Winning the Magic Millions is a different type of experience but
the prizemoney in particular certainly makes it very special”, laughed
Elliot.
A chance meeting at Flemington is what started the relationship
between Elliot and trainer Bjorn Baker.
“I met Bjorn at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day in 2010 when
he and his father Murray were running Lion Tamer”, said Elliot.
“We got chatting and he said that he had some spare owners
tickets so we ended up being pretend owners of the horse for the
day.
“Lion Tamer ended up winning the race so it was a fantastic
experience and Bjorn was just great fun, the relationship really

Confidence levels were very high by all involved with
Unencumbered leading in to the Magic Millions.
“He has always been a special horse”,
said Elliot.
“From the moment that we broke him in
back in March of last year, his attitude just
stood out clearly.
“He is just such a relaxed colt, nothing at
all phases him.
“You can walk up to and give him a cuddle,
he will just nuzzle right into you.
“From his first serious piece of work to his
first jump out, the barrier trial, then race, he
just took it all in his stride and learned more
every time.
“That component, his ability to learn, is
clearly a key attribute that Bjorn looks for in
a horse and develops as he wants them to
continually improve through the preparation”.
Elliot is also full of admiration for jockey
Nathan Berry, who is unbeaten in all five rides
on Unencumbered.
“Nathan is such a lovely guy and clearly
comes from a great family”, said Elliot.
“He is just so professional and well
mannered, he knows his own flaws and
positives.
“From the first time he ever sat on
Unencumbered, Nathan was full of praise for
him and just wanted to ride him.

No firm decision has been made as to whether Unencumbered
will race again this season.

“Watching them together on Saturday,
said Elliot.
“The horse pulled up well on Saturday
night, he ate up, and when I saw him on
Sunday morning he looked perfect.
“Bjorn will just see how he is but most
likely put him in the paddock before thinking
about the Golden Slipper but it will depend
on how the horse is”.
Elliot may be back in the winners
enclosure at next year’s Magic Millions after
securing two yearlings with Baker at the sales
this week.
“I don’t like going above $100,000 for
a horse and Bjorn and I hit that mark this
week”, explained Elliot.
“We got the Testa Rossa-Arms Wide Open
filly for $100,000, she is a lovely sort and
reminds people of Sheer Style.
“We also purchased the OnemorenomoreInterfere filly for $60,000.

Big Day For Corrales
from the Patrick Lee stable justified his late support to score an
impressive win in the 3 and 4 Year old Handicap over 1200 metres
to give Corrales a quick double.
Put into a nice spot by Corrales from his wide gate, the threeyear-old unleashed a big finish over the final 200 metres to win
easily in a time of 1:10.5 which was just slightly slower than the
Class 2 and 3 later in the afternoon.
Sunshine Blaze was sold for $50,000 to Magic Millions as
