Flagellate protozoa are found widely in nature. Flagellates move by
actively beating one or more long, thin flagella (white arrows). Most
are small (5 – 10 µm long). They are abundant in aquatic
environments. Flagellates are important microorganisms in the
microbial food web. They feed on bacteria and detritus.
