Prince George's
PHILHARMONIC
Prince George’s
Philharmonic
Celebrating 50 years
of live music!
MUSIC DIRECTOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the 50th Season!
WELCOME
The Prince George’s Philharmonic celebrates its 50th
Anniversary during the 2015-2016 season. It is also my
15th Anniversary as the Philharmonic’s Music
Director, and I have never been more excited
about our planned programs!
In October, we will present another soloist in
the outstanding series of young artists who have
won the Johansen International Competition for
Young String Players, along with a performance
of Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony.
Our November program will comprise three
infrequently heard masterworks, including the
Charles Ellis,
delightful Violin Concerto by Eric Wolfgang
Music Director
Korngold, which will also feature the return of
one of our favorite guest artists, Amy Beth Horman. Our annual
side-by-side program, which spotlights the Philharmonic’s
commitment to education and community outreach, will mark
a renewal of our collaboration with the Suitland Center for the
Visual and Performing Arts Concert Choir for performances of
two sacred works: the Gloria by Francis Poulenc, paired with a
motet which Mozart composed during his pre-teen years.
In March, we will perform some wonderfully colorful and
evocative music, including an appearance by world-renowned
pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, and a performance of
Stravinsky’s ever-popular Firebird Suite. All of this leads to our
gala 50th Anniversary Concert on May 22, 2016, when we will
fill the University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts
Center with the glorious sound of Gustav Mahler’s Resurrection
Symphony, in partnership with the Heritage Signature Chorale
and the Chesapeake Chorale. This promises to be a memorable
season, filled with the very finest of orchestral music, as we
pause to recognize many of the individuals who have played
a significant role in helping the Philharmonic achieve this
milestone in our history. Please join us for the celebration!
Join us for
our 50th season
of music!

Dear Friends of the Philharmonic,
It is exciting to realize that nearly 50 years ago, residents of Prince George's
County began enjoying symphonic music from their very own orchestra
composed of music lovers residing in the Bowie,
Maryland area. Known then as the Prince
George's Civic Orchestra, they performed their
first concert in December 1965 at the recently
opened Bowie High School.
Since that time, and a few growing pains later,
the now famous Prince George's Philharmonic
has expanded its scope to include The Anne
Gentry Educational Outreach Program.
Named for its founder, this outstanding program
is also known as Symphony Kids. Through
Mary Ann White,
collaboration with the Prince George's County
President
Department of Education, students receive
Board of Directors
one-on-one music lessons with a qualified
teacher during the school year and free tickets for their families to attend all
Philharmonic concerts. They also perform an annual recital.
To those of you who are not familiar with the Prince George’s
Philharmonic, come with us on a five-concert journey, beginning on
opening night, October 10, 2015, through to our closing concert in May
2016. Bring your family and friends, and especially the children, and learn
more about the orchestra and classical music. I promise you, it will be music
to your ears - some familiar and some new!
Now sit back, relax and enjoy the music of our 50th Year. I look forward,
with enthusiasm, to seeing you and greeting new friends and supporters
during this concert year.
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
The Anne Gentry Educational Outreach Program provides free music
instruction to deserving Prince George's County public school students who
would otherwise be unable to engage in such instruction. Students in the
Anne Gentry Educational Outreach Program, also known as Symphony Kids,
receive one-on-one music lessons with a qualified teacher during the school
year and free tickets for their families to attend all Philharmonic concerts.
They also perform in an annual recital.
In addition, our educational outreach program offers an annual side-by-side
for selected students; occasional masterclasses led by our guest artists; and
an annual celebration of Music in Our Schools.
