Jeff Baker, 43, lives with his two sons in the washes of Santa Clarita.
Raised in Joplin, Missouri, Baker recalled his upbringing. “I had a pretty
good life growing up,” he said.
Saved From CEMEX
BLM Officials End CEMEX Mine in Soledad Canyon
after 16-Year Dispute
By Melissa Lampert
Bureau of Land Management officials put an end to CEMEX’s
controversial plans to mine in Soledad Canyon by terminating the
building materials company’s contracts last Friday, City of Santa Clarita
officials announced.
The termination document, which follows a long battle against the mine
by City officials, cancelled CEMEX’s two 10-year contracts to mine in
Soledad Canyon due to “non-performance” by CEMEX.
But after dropping out of school at the age of 13 because of his dyslexia,
Baker began working at the factories in Joplin. Years later, the factories shut
down and Baker traveled to Texas, where he worked several odd jobs.

“Today is a historic day in Santa Clarita,” said Bob Kellar, Mayor Pro
Tem and CEMEX city council sub-committee member. “We have
worked hard for the last 16 years to make sure our community was
protected from the effects of a mega-mining project and that hard work by
many, including our City, our elected officials and those at all levels of
government, has paid off.”

Deadline Approaches for 21st
Annual River Rally Registration
A
nyone who has participated in
the annual River Rally Clean Up
knows it is an opportunity to improve the
Santa Clarita Valley and work side-byside with friends, neighbors, children, or
club members. Individual residents and
organizations can participate in this year’s
21st annual event on Saturday, September
19, 2015 from 8-11 a.m. behind the
shopping center at 18386 Soledad Canyon
Road in Canyon Country, near the
U.S. Post Office. Participants must preregister and the deadline is Wednesday,
September 16, 2015. Register in advance
at GreenSantaClarita.com or by calling
the River Rally Hotline at (661) 284-1415.
The deadline for participants to sign up is
Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
The river clean up event is hosted by
the City of Santa Clarita and includes
the Environmental Expo, where visitors
can meet vendors with tips on recycling,
air quality, pollution prevention, water
quality, open space preservation and
wildlife conservation programs in Santa
Clarita.
“It’s so wonderful to see our community
come together year after year for this event
and help protect our environment,” said
Mayor Marsha McLean. “Thousands
of residents over the past 20 years have
helped remove 396,000 pounds of trash
from the Santa Clara River.”
All participating volunteers must
wear closed-toe shoes, sunscreen and
appropriate clothing for walking in
the riverbed. Gloves, collection bags
and refreshments will be provided to
participants, and volunteers will receive
a commemorative giveaway (while
supplies last).
Nearly half of the Santa Clarita Valley’s
water supply travels through the Santa
Clara River, which is home to 14
endangered bird species, six endangered
plant species, 57 archeological sites and
12 historical landmarks.
Residents are encouraged to carpool,
walk or bike to the event site, as parking
is limited. Free bike valet will be
provided. The event is open to all ages,
however pets are not allowed. For more
information on the 21st annual River Rally
and Environmental Expo, or to sign up to
participate, visit GreenSantaClarita.com
or call the River Rally hotline, at (661)

The Science of Underachieving
By Sarah Farnell
How to Stop Competing in this Competitive World
counselor to
get real.
Are you sick and tired of being the
best at everything? Are you constantly
reminded of how great your life is?
Overachieving can happen to anyone:
friends, family, loved ones. The effects
of an overwhelmingly high GPA and
great social life can be devastating,
but there is a solution to this festering
disease.
The best underachievers
are not only
known for
their subpar
academic careers, but also
for their disgusting personal hygiene
and eating habits. This means that every
fast food establishment is to be on speed
dial—a button away from your diabetes
diagnosis. You will be swimming in
cholesterol before you know it.
The art of underachieving is a science.
Centuries of trial and error within work
and school environments have patented
a success-proof blueprint for continuous
failure. To understand the craft of this
inevitable academic decline, the process
can be broken down into a few simple
steps.
Step one—deadlines mean nothing. You
will get to that term paper when you get
to that term paper. There are far more
important tasks in life than preparing for your future. “Due Tuesday? Do
Tuesday.”
Who has time to bathe? Not you. You
are far too busy commenting on photos
of your friends having social lives. After
all, harboring those pheromones is the
key to attracting a mate. The longer that
you go without a shower, the more the
opposite sex will be drawn to you. And
if you believe, you can underachieve.
Step two—hang out with the kid that
never seems to leave the gas station.
His patchy beard harbors years of teen
angst and summer school that you need
to grasp onto. Make friends with him,
try his brownies, hide him from your
parents.
The fifth and most important step is to
become involved in 20/80 relationships.
Your pheromones have attracted a lover
that pours their heart and soul into
making you happy—while you forget to
even take out the trash. Be the lover that
only Jerry Springer would take home
to mama. As soon as you have failed
at human contact, you will truly fail at
being a human life.
The third way to sink the boat of life
is to make sure you do the bare minimum—and that means cutting class
a little too early every single day and
only taking easy classes for the rest
of your academic career. Does that
pesky counselor recommend a foreign
language? Well, my friend, the word
“recommend” is your best pal. Tell that
A new generation of disturbed burnouts is on the rise, and it is our duty
as American citizens to preserve this
movement. If we do not fulfill our duty
and become purposeless entities that
suck money from taxpayers, who else
will? Who will take on the noble chore
of being the worst? Only we can make a
difference.

Annual Evening of
Remembrance Raises
Awareness of Safe Driving
F
or 10 years, the City of Santa
Clarita and the Blue Ribbon Task
Force have held a meaningful event
that draws local residents who either
have lost loved ones to traffic accidents
or just want to offer support to the
cause of safer driving.
This year’s Evening of Remembrance
will be held on Wednesday, September
9 at Santa Clarita Youth Grove in
Central Park, which is a venue created
to honor those age 24 and under who
lost their lives in auto accidents. The
community is invited to the Walk
of Remembrance beginning at 6:45
p.m. followed by the Evening of
Remembrance ceremony beginning at
7:15 p.m.
“This year marks the 10th anniversary
of the Evening of Remembrance,” said
Santa Clarita Mayor Marsha McLean.
“And with two names being added this
year to the Youth Grove memorial, we
remain committed to educating not
just youth in town, but all residents,
about the importance of safe driving.”
The City of Santa Clarita’s half-acre
Youth Grove memorial is dedicated to
educating the community about safe
driving and offers a place for reflection.
The Youth Grove at Central Park is
now home to 93 individual pillars,
each bearing a plaque with the name
of a young life lost to a traffic-related
incident. The pillars, which mimic
cut tree stumps to symbolize young
lives cut short on the road, surround
a central monument urging the
community to “Know More” about
safe driving habits and pledge that “No
More” young lives will be lost behind
the wheel.
The Youth Grove at Central Park is
located at 27150 Bouquet Canyon
Road. For more information on the
Youth Grove and the inaugural Walk
of Remembrance, contact the City’s
Community Services Division at (661)

OPINION
Responsible No More
By Robert Patrick Lewis
I
’m a huge fan of technology, industry disruptors
and any business with a new and efficient way
to meet an unmet or inefficient need in the marketplace. At its core, this is the sole intent of an entrepreneur: to find a demand in the marketplace that
is either unmet or inefficiently addressed, and find a
better (or new) way to meet the demand.
Like most people, I was skeptical of Uber at first.
The idea that someone would use their car to make
a little money on the side by courting strangers
around the city, or that strangers would trust someone without the traditional yellow cab to transport
them, seemed like a stretch to me. But, it worked.
Uber has been a beacon for entrepreneurship. And,
along with Airbnb, has blazed the way for other
sharing economies to show people the unrealized
value in the goods they already own, whether it be
the couch in your living room needed by a lowbudget traveler or the young partygoer who wants a
ride to the bar or club without the typical hassle of
finding, hailing, and waiting for an overpriced taxi.
Through its last rounds of funding, Uber has been
given a valuation of $40 billion. Not only has it
found a massive demand and value for connecting
people who need a little extra money with those
who need a ride, but it helped revolutionize a stagnant industry. As a 35-year-old man, most of my
friends are in one of two camps, the first of which
consists of parents, like me, whose Friday and
Saturday nights are spent at home playing with the
kids or catching up on shows. The second consists
of those without kids who are still enjoying the
nightlife.
Sadly, before Uber came along, most of my friends
who enjoyed the nightlife would rather risk driving
after a night of drinking than call a taxi, due to the
inefficiencies, high prices, and unscrupulous & unsavory characters you would meet driving the yellow
cabs. And now, thanks to entrepreneurship and innovation, the term “calling an Uber” has become as
synonymous with going out drinking as “googling”
has to online searches. But, Uber painted a huge
target on its back with success, and those taking
shots are about as deeply rooted in corruption as
one can get.
One simple fact has to be pointed out before we
continue: workers’ unions are one of the largest
contributors to democratic political campaigns out
there. So, when the teachers union, steelworkers
union or taxi drivers unions need political favors,
they just call their bought-and-paid-for lapdogs.
This was seen in New York City when Mayor Bill
de Blasio and his administration fabricated various false arguments and manufactured reasons to
attempt to do away with Uber in his city. Forget that
it’s a new and unique business changing an industry
that was in dire need and providing many young
people with part-time income who haven’t been able
to find work in Obama’s wonderful economy; the
taxi drivers union was upset about their loss in fares,
so the lapdog de Blasio jumped to action.
After some celebrity help, crafty marketing from
Uber, and a public who quickly saw through the
paper-thin arguments of de Blasio and his cronies,
the New York troubles seemed to pass for the time
being. But, another sharpshooter has taken aim at
Uber and its groundbreaking business model, and
it’s coming from an unlikely place - their own drivers.
Let me rephrase that. It would have been an unlikely place perhaps a decade or two ago, but in the
age of “holding me accountable for my actions is
not politically correct,” perhaps it’s right where we
should have expected it.
Enter Douglass O’Connor, Thomas Colopy, Matthew Manahan and Elie Gurfinkel, plaintiffs in a
case against Uber that truly worries me about the
future of our society, and drives another nail in the
coffin of why this generation will never be mistaken
for the men of the greatest generation. While the allure of Uber was the chance to make a little money
on the side using your car, some people (namely
the plaintiffs listed here) chose to take it on as a
full-time profession. I would put them in the same
boat as fast-food workers demanding $15 an hour
because they weren’t smart enough to realize that
a position in fast food was never meant to be a fulltime position, but who am I to be un-PC and call
someone out for being a lazy and pathetic failure in
life.
The idea that Uber was meant to be a part-time,
contractor position was extremely straightforward
from the beginning for anyone with an IQ high
enough to tie their shoes. When you are available
to take on a rider, you let the app know you’re
available – no manager controlling your hours, no
weekly schedule, no central hub that you have to
work out of or wait at. But in an age where no one
can be held responsible for making big boy decisions, O’Connor, Colopy, Manahan and Gurfinkel
have decided to sue Uber, claiming that despite all
of the factors above, they deserve to be classified as
full-time employees.
You can’t make this
stuff up.
As contrary to common sense as it may seem for
any judge in his/her right mind to even allow this
to be a court case (rather than a punishment to their
parents for raising such worthless individuals), I
think there are two main reasons this lawsuit has
even been allowed to see the light of day. Firstly, all
four men are bringing this lawsuit in the city of San
Francisco, a town so liberal it makes card-carrying
democrats and MSNBC hosts uncomfortable. And,
of course, the fact that so many union-funded politicians are being told by their masters to get rid of
Uber doesn’t help either.
From the standpoints of both a parent and an
entrepreneur, the fact that this lawsuit is allowed
to go forward (and was moved into a class action
status) sickens me. From the parental standpoint, it
shows that personal responsibility has made an exit

And from the entrepreneurial standpoint, it shows
just how big of a target success makes you, and
that if you challenge the political establishment and

with a quickness.
There was a time when this nation was great, not
because of our landmarks, flag or colleges, but
because of our people. Because a deal could be done
on a handshake, and a man’s word was his bond.
Because American innovation led the world in finding the better way to do things, and because people
took responsibility and pride in their actions.
But, unfortunately, those times are gone, and responsibility is no more in this country.

SCV Residents Invited to Hazard Mitigation
Public Workshop
C
ity of Santa Clarita officials are inviting SCV residents to a free Hazard
Mitigation Public Workshop on Sept. 10 in an effort to identify ways to
reduce the risk of local natural hazards.
In addition to offering information regarding Santa Clarita’s hazard
mitigation plan, the workshop also gives attendees the opportunity to address
concerns and gain an understanding of local natural hazard risks, according
to City officials.
The workshop is designed to familiarize residents with the city’s hazard
mitigation plan and provides the opportunity for feedback. Every five years
City officials evaluate the plan as part of what they referred to as “the public
process.”
Feedback received from the workshop is expected to assist City planning
officials in updating Santa Clarita’s mitigation goals to more closely align
with the concerns of community members.
The plan implements damage prevention efforts to lessen the impact of
natural disasters, including earthquakes, wildfires, floods and more on
residents’ lives and property. It also acts as a guiding document to help secure
local eligibility for pre/post-disaster federal mitigation funding.
The workshop is set for Thursday, Sept. 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the “A Room” at the
Santa Clarita Activities Center, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway. No RSVP
is necessary. For more information, contact the City’s emergency services supervisor,
Donna Nuzzi, at 661-250-3721 or [email protected].

Oh Sylvia, Bless Your Little Heart:
In the spirit of being fair and balanced, I welcome
Miss or Mrs. Turner’s opinion pieces and I try not
to get in pissing matches with her, but sometimes I
gotta say “give me a freaking break!” Last week she was
praising her newfound hero, presidential candidate
Bernie Sanders. She gushed over his words, while I
had to control the bile that was emanating from the
depths of my gut.
Bernie: “The American people must make a fundamental
decision. Do we continue the 40-year decline of our
middle class and the growing gap between the very
rich and everyone else, or do we fight for a progressive
economic agenda that creates jobs, raises wages, protects the
environment and provides health care for all?”
Doug: What he really is saying: “We need to tax
the crap out of the rich, allow for more deadbeats
to not pay taxes, pump stimulus money into the
government for artificial jobs, engineer wages through
laws, increase environmental regulations and have
the government provide and oversee all aspects of
healthcare.”
Bernie: “We must pursue policies that transform this
country into a nation that affirms the value of its people
of color. That starts with addressing the four central types
of violence waged against black and brown Americans:
physical, political, legal and economic.”
Doug: In other words, create class warfare, turn a
blind eye to same-race killings that are rampant,
persecute any type of language that is deemed racist,
allow for civil unrest and untruths to be spewed
when people of color are legitimately shot by law
enforcement personnel, and increase every sort of
government assistance to all folks of color.
Bernie: “When my Republican colleagues mention
‘family values,’ they’re usually talking about opposition
to contraception, denying a woman’s right to choose, or
opposition to gay rights.”
Doug: What Bernie really means is, you hateful,
intolerant, religious homophobes, how could you
not approve of babies being murdered, or unnatural
acts contrary to God’s design. The family values
you believe in are out of touch with normalcy and
contrary to this wonderful modern age. It’s time
for the old-fashioned family beliefs that have been
around for thousands of years to be pushed aside so
our culture can thrive with the new values of massive
permissiveness, strict political correctness and the
thickening of the cesspool that America is becoming.
Bernie: “We are the only major nation in the world that
doesn’t guarantee paid time off for new parents. Of 182

nations that do provide paid leave for this purpose, more
than half guarantee at least 14 weeks off. We are the only
one of 22 wealthy nations that does not guarantee some type
of paid sick leave, and the only one that does not provide
paid sick leave for a worker undergoing a 50-day cancer
treatment. We are the only advanced economy, and one of
only 13 nations in the entire world, that doesn’t guarantee
workers a paid vacation.”
Doug: Interpretation: We should force all
companies, by law, to do everything we socialists
think they should be doing, without regard to the
unique economic situations of individual businesses
and their owners. We don’t give a rip if it results in
companies going out of business, laying people off,
reduced hiring, economic stagnation or anything that
is good, business-wise. We certainly don’t believe in
letting free enterprise thrive, allowing these benefits
to occur naturally. Just do all of this stuff for the
emotional, feel-good crap that we think is vital to a
nation and its people.
Bat Crap Crazy Reprised:
There is a song somewhere in the back of my mind
that goes “I don’t know how much more I can take.” I
say yeah – that. Someone wrote to “Letters to the
Editor” in the semi-daily paper here in town, and one
of their claims was “Six and a half years after Bush
we are much better off.” Last week I ranted about the
apparent (maybe I should say obvious?) stupidity of
liberals when it comes to politics. Much better off ?
Not even a little better off or somewhat better off, but
much better off ?! What am I missing here? I guess the
bigger question is, “What is this person seeing that
I’m not, or what is he not seeing that I am?”
Let’s review…under Obama:
- A mountain of debt has accumulated that surpasses
the total debt of all past presidents combined.
-A record number of people are on food stamps and
other forms of government assistance.
-There is a record low labor participation rate.
-A ton of new regulations and fines have been
enacted, choking business half to death.
- There has been pathetic slow and low economic
growth.
-Social race tensions are much higher than 6-1/2
years ago.
-A military that has been cut to the bones so much
that many experts feel we don’t have the capability to
wage an effective war.
-He has had complete disregard of opinions and
recommendations from military and foreign
affair experts, resulting in our nation going from a
powerhouse to a weak-kneed wimp.
-The man is on record as being against business,
particularly the energy industry.
-This doesn’t even touch on the scandals and abuse
of powers we have seen.
On top of this stuff, the guy is a hypocrite. Here is
what he said in 2008: “The problem is, is that the way
Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a
credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our
children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for
the first 42 presidents – number 43 added $4 trillion by his
lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that
we are going to have to pay back -- $30,000 for every man,
woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.”
Note: When Mr. Obama took office the debt was
$10.6 trillion. Presently, the debt is over $18 trillion,
which is $57,000 for every man, woman and child.
On top of that, our debt goes up almost $2 billion
per day !
Who is unpatriotic and irresponsible? We’re better
off than 6-1/2 years ago? How so?

Letter to the Ranter:
Doug,
You were doing so well. I thought you were about to go down
the rabbit hole and see that both FOR-PROFIT parties are so
corrupt it is destroying the country. But alas, you return to the
partisan narrative that keeps us all spinning in circles. Can’t
really blame you, it works for the 6 media conglomerates that
control our mainstream media. However, as we bicker over which
party rep. did what, where, and to whom, they have secret trade
meetings, make backroom deals to include in the next spending
bill, and basically ignore the constitution at every level of gov’t.
You must agree that since “Citizen’s Untied” gave unlimited
money to our elected officials, they have turned their collative backs
on us regular folks. Why listen to Average Jack or Jill voter when
the real money is coming from the corporate elite? Yahoo ran a
story last week about how the Koch Brothers weren’t sure of the
Congressman that was in office. (which they had given so much
money) They weren’t sure if this congressman was acting in the
Koch Brothers best interest. A story like that would have only been
leaked to an alternate source in the past. Nowadays, it’s out for all
to see. Yet, no one seem to notice or care. For the past 30 odd years
we were told “what’s good for GM is good for the country”. Well,
we are now living in the repercussions of that way of thinking. My
worry is too many people believe or count on the government to give
us our rights, liberty , and happiness. When in fact, it’s in the one
thing our country has that no other country has, our Constitution!
Unfortunately, both parties want to eliminate that sacred document
and they are almost finished. I hope we as a people wake up soon
and realize we’re not in Kansas anymore Toto. Until then, all
we can do is love our families and friends and hang on for the
ride! Jeff

Business of the Week: Mind, Body & Soap Co.
by Martha Michael
W
hen Mind, Body & Soap Co. opened
in Newhall in the spring, residents of
Santa Clarita not only got a brick-and-mortar version of a successful online enterprise,
they got a shop local-defining destination
featuring almost all handmade merchandise. And today, it’s even more so.
“Now it’s more handmade across the board
– not just the bath products,” says owner
Katherine Miller. “We try and just have
everything be handmade, locally.”
The shop offers way more than merchandise, which includes body butters and hand
cut soap, along with racks of vintage and new
vintage-inspired clothing, accessories, jewelry and
home décor. It’s all about the ambience, which begins with rich scents when you walk in the charming door of their shop on Lyons. Katherine Miller
and her husband, Chris, have their displays in and
on more vintage furniture than when they opened.
“We have furniture now, handmade, and we have
some more antique pieces in,” says Katherine. “It’s
all real wood, buffets and hutches.”
The most popular merchandise, predictably, at
Mind, Body & Soap Co. is soap. Specifically, their
customers think the bath bombs are the bomb. They
like the store’s bubble cakes and Dead Sea salt infused soap, among much
more—all U.S. made and natural.
In addition, there are candles, knickknacks and clothing. A new addition
is jewelry handmade by a local woman
who also sells her one-of-a-kind
bracelets, necklaces and earrings at the
Farmers Market in Newhall. She uses
copper, leather and real stones in her
handiwork.
If the couple’s creativity is in doubt,
shoppers can look no further than
the unique names of various soaps
and candles, all with unique odors,
including “Between the Sheets,” and
“Frankly Rosemary, I Don’t Give a Mint.” But,
above all, Katherine Miller points out one big
difference from other similar shops.
“We feel passionate about being an affordable
boutique,” she says. “We’re just a great, friendly
place—there’s something for everybody.”
The couple has three children, Ciera, 15, Savannah, 7, and Payton, 5, and their oldest is now
a store employee with her mom and dad. The
original Mind, Body & Soap Co. is in Excelsior
Springs, Missouri, another historic “old town”
district, and is run by Chris’ mother.
Store hours are 10-6 Monday-Saturday. Mind, Body & Soap Co. is located
at 23123 Lyons Avenue in Newhall; (661) 505-7271. Visit www.MindBodyandSoap.com.
“The ingredients are so beneficial for your skin and smell so good with immediate results that people just buy them up,” says Katherine.
Restaurant of the Week: Margarita’s Mexican Grill
by Martha Michael
T
his authentic Mexican restaurant
has been so successful in Valencia
that there is now a new one open in
Westlake. Don’t let the name deceive
you—there is a lot more than just a tasty
margarita waiting for you.
One of the more unique salads is carnitas salad
that Margaritas calls the “Los Angeles Salad.”
It includes chopped spinach and romaine with
vegetables, tortilla strips and a Mexican Caesar
dressing.
And for a whole other genre of dishes,
Margaritas offers vegetarian fare. There is a
spinach enchilada, a veggie burrito and the
restaurant has a vegetarian taco.
“Our menu is huge,” says Maria
Acevedo, who owns Margaritas with
husband Jose. “Everything is with the
flavor of Mexico.”
In the summer, customers tend to
favor the ceviche and shrimp salad,
Margaritas’ unique versions of carne
asada and mole poblana, which has tender
chicken with sautéed rice, vegetables and
almonds with homemade mole sauce.
Ceviche cocktails are favorite appetizers,
where small pieces of white fish are
marinated in lime juice, mixed with
chopped cilantro, tomatoes, onions and
avocados. Maria describes the shrimp
cocktail and shrimp salad as “refreshing,”
summing up Margaritas’ fare as
“traditional dishes from Mexico.”
“Our menu has something for everybody,”
Maria says.
Margaritas has a renowned Sunday brunch,
open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Besides an extensive brunch
menu, Margaritas serves handmade tortillas and
complimentary champagne. There is a surprise
dish every Sunday as well.
On weekdays, customers have the option of a
lunch buffet, open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday
through Friday. The restaurant is also open for
dinner.
Margaritas is located at 23320 Valencia Blvd.
in Valencia; (661) 255-1136. Visit www.
margaritasmexgrill.com.
The pride of Margaritas’ salad selection
stems from what is placed on top. “We
have about 10 different salads with house
dressing that we make here,” she says.

ACTION Family Foundation
By Melissa Lampert
F
amilies of local teenagers going through difficult times can turn to
the ACTION Family Foundation for help on a variety of issues,
ranging from drug and alcohol abuse to conflicts associated with
divorce, death, peer pressure and more.
With free support groups for both parents and teens held every week at
Canyon High School, local youth can get help from certified, trained
counselors in a group of their peers, while parents can come together
to help support each other and offer practical solutions to common
problems.
Called the ACTION Parent and Teen Support Program, weekly groups
are “designed to empower parents that are going through difficult times
and encourage teens to make better decisions,” said Cary Quashen,
the organization’s founder and CEO. “We deal with everything from
substance abuse to self-esteem to school problems. You name it, we
deal with it.”
“The really powerful thing about it is it’s a safe place for kids to
come and be able to deal with stuff,” Quashen continued, “and a safe
place for parents to be able to come and not get judged. … Whatever
situation a parent has a parent in that room has already been through,
so we’re going to have a lot of support for them. Nobody judges them.”
On average, teens are involved in a negative behavior or situation for
about 18 months when they first start attending ACTION meetings,
according to Quashen. When a new member joins the group, the goal
is to transform his/her previous environment of negative peer pressure
into a positive one.
“We take the same kind of kids that got these kids in trouble to now get
them out of trouble by turning the negative peer pressure into positive,”
Quashen explained. “It’s cool to come to group and say, ‘I’ve been
clean a week.’ We celebrate that with chips and tokens, so it’s a safe
place for kids to come and get positive peer pressure.”
In addition to the ACTION Parent and Teen Support Program,
ACTION Family Foundation officials also regularly hold assemblies
in local private and public schools, run an alternative-to-suspension
program for teens caught with alcohol by school district officials and do
free assessments and evaluations for the districts as well.
Organization officials are currently gearing up for the launch of a brand
new program called “The Experience,” a traveling digital memorial set
to be displayed at school assemblies and local events like Concerts in
the Park, Every 15 Minutes, the annual Emergency Expo, high school
football games and more.
“We’re going to have a memorial for people who have lost their
children to overdoses and drug abuse,” Quashen said. “It’s a safe place
where people can go and pay their respects.”
Through the use of a transformed RV, the memorial will feature a
billboard sized screen on the outside of the vehicle and numerous TV
monitors inside, giving community members the opportunity to walk
through the RV and hear the stories of local teens that lost their lives to
drugs.
The goal of the program is to help bring awareness to substance abuse
within the community, acting as a possible deterrent to local youth and
inspiring sober living and healthy choices.
“It’s going to be intense and very powerful,” Quashen said. “It’s one of
the first of its kind.”
“Right now we’re in the midst of what you call an epidemic when
it comes to opiates,” he continued. “We’re in crisis right now. We’re
losing kids, so anything we can do to get the word out.”
For more information about ACTION Family Foundation, go to www.

Measure to Defund High Speed Rail Shot Down in Senate
By Melissa Lampert
L
egislation that would reduce funds for the high speed
rail project in California has been shot down in the
Senate, officials announced Wednesday.
Senate Bill X1-6 would have prohibited Cap and Trade
funds from being used for the high speed rail, instead
requiring these Cap and Trade dollars be used to fund
existing transportation projects.
“I do not support the Cap and Trade tax, but drivers are
already paying it at the pump to the tune of $1.9 billion a
year,” said Senator Sharon Runner (R-Antelope Valley),
who introduced the bill. “California should not spend
another dollar on the high speed rail boondoggle; if
taxpayers are being forced to pay, the money should be
used for existing transportation purposes.”
The Senate Transportation and Infrastructure
Development Committee killed the measure on a partyline vote, which resulted in two votes in favor of the
bill and nine votes against it, according to officials from
Runner’s office.
A total of 25 percent of annual Cap and Trade proceeds
are currently being used to pay for the high speed rail
project. The failed S.B. X1-6 would have redirected these
funds to the California Transportation Commission to be
used for high priority transportation projects, such as fixing
roads and highways. It also would have returned the $400
million in Cap and Trade taxes borrowed by the General
Fund.
“Instead of high speed rail, we should be spending Cap and
Trade dollars to restore our badly neglected transportation
infrastructure,” Runner said. “Fixing and updating our
roads to meet current demands would benefit California’s
families and reduce greenhouse gases right away. I am
disappointed the committee members in the majority party
don’t understand this.”

W
hile some of you may
think that the indiscretions
(crimes) of Josh Duggar are personal, issues only for his family to
resolve, I say, “If only they could be!”
where he claimed the LGBT community’s “radical agenda” is an “evil force.”
As obnoxious as it is to have the former Family
Research Council exec (he was a little too much
into family research) spout off about sexual purity
and family values, though he was a molester,
it can’t be separated from right-wing politics. I
mean, look at Mike Huckabee come to his defense?! Look at all of Josh Duggar’s selfies with
GOP presidential candidates!
Well, it’s easy to find religious right-wing wackos
(there’s not enough room in this paper, actually).
Take Texas Southern Baptist Pastor Matt Chandler, head of the 11,000-member The Village
Church, who sent a letter slamming Karen Root
for wanting to divorce her husband, Jordan Root,
for being a pedophile.
Are we looking for four years of incest and molestation rights?
Have you ever noticed that those who rail the
loudest against sexual “sins,” like homosexuality,
are shoving down the homosexual in themselves,
or other sexually “off-beat” practices/addictions
they have? And there is always the slew of misogynistic “family values” right-wingers.
People on the right underestimate their tendency
toward hypocrisy. They wouldn’t be so scrutinized
if they didn’t constantly refer to issues that belong
in people’s own bedrooms. That opens them up to
judgment.
Josh Duggar and his mother, Michelle, campaigned against protections for LGBT folks
and Josh Duggar referred to gays as “a threat to
children.” Josh has portrayed gays and lesbians
as a threat to marriage and preached about sexual
purity. He denounced same-sex marriage as an
attack on the family and spoke at anti-gay rallies.
As executive director of Family Research Council,
he spoke at “Watchmen on the Wall” this year,
Is it just too painful to go on kicking this sick and
twisted man?
Or there’s Kim Davis, the Kentucky court clerk
who refuses to issue marriage licenses to gay
couples, even after the SCOTUS decision Obergefell v. Hodges. Guess how many times she’s been
married? Four.
In the political sector, GOP hypocrisy abounds.
Remember how the “Swift Boat Veterans for
Truth” attacked John Kerry’s military service
about a decade ago, claiming he falsely accepted
military honors? (He was a democratic nominee
for president at the time and had earned the Silver
Star and three Purple Hearts, by the way.) They
were published by author Jerome Corsi, who is
also the ignoramus who propelled the idea that
President Obama’s birth certificate was a fake.
So, it was okay to attack veteran Kerry, but they’ve
jumped all over Donald Trump for his crack about
Sen. John McCain not being a hero because he
was captured in Vietnam. Presidential hopeful Jeb
Bush tweeted that “all our veterans – particularly
POWs have earned our respect and admiration.”
By Sylvia Turner
ies” following your brother’s re-election, thanking
him/them for taking down John Kerry by attacking his military service? What a hypocrite!
You know, this is a bit of a tangent, but – when
you come from a family valuing pedigree as much
as the Bushes do (enough to name a kid “George
Herbert Walker Bush”), how’d you end up with an
inane name like Jeb?
Back on topic, I’ll just “swiftly” run through a few
more examples so you don’t think I had to search
far and wide for the political/hypocritical lot.
Don’t forget Louisiana Republican Senator David
Vitter, the abstinence-only promoter who called
for school board meetings to open with prayer.
He pushed for a national amendment banning
gay marriage. He was so supportive of marriage,
in fact, that he was a regular at a D.C. area escort
service, making his prostitutes put him in diapers.
That stinks!
How about 28-year Republican Idaho Congressman Ted Haggard? He opposed gay men serving
in the military and wanted same-sex marriage
outlawed nationwide. He also spoke out against
abortion, premarital sex and adultery too. He was
arrested for lewd conduct in a men’s room stall,
and no fewer than eight gay men claimed to have
had sexual affairs with him.
So, the good news for Josh Duggar? He’s not
alone! After all, lots of other men had accounts at
Ashley Madison. Right-wingers would probably
appreciate it, however, if he’d stop describing his
family as “the epitome of conservative values.”
Really, Jeb? Then how do you justify the letter you
sent to Colonel George Day and the “other Swift-

Labor Day - A Hard Fought
National Holiday
by Robin Sandoval
This year is really flying by. It’s already September, kids are going back to
school, stores are beginning their launch of Halloween merchandising, and
Labor Day weekend is upon us.
For some, Labor Day marks the end of summer and the return to classes, and
for others it’s a free day off and an excuse to get in one last backyard barbecue
before the weather starts to cool off. In reality, Labor Day was the result of a
hard-fought battle between beleaguered American workers and the companies
that exploited them during the height of the Industrial Revolution.
Labor Day originated in the late 19th century. During this period, many men,
women and children in America worked grueling 12-14 hour shifts in remarkably unsafe conditions for meager pay. The introduction of machinery during
the Industrial Revolution made it possible to manufacture goods with far fewer
workers than ever before. As a result, there were more workers than jobs available – and if anyone was upset with their hours, pay, or work, there were at
least 10 jobless people who would be more than eager to take their places.
During this time, manufacturing supplanted agriculture as America’s main
source of employment. To protest the long hours, unsafe conditions and insufficient pay, workers began to form labor unions. During the late 1800s, these
unions grew larger, more vocal and more powerful. Rallies and strikes were
organized and used to force employers to negotiate better pay rates and hours
for the union members. Some of these rallies turned violent, like the Haymarket Riot of 1886 in Chicago. The rally-turned-riot ended up causing the deaths
of several Chicago policemen and protestors.
Some of the rallies didn’t turn violent, but instead sparked yearly traditions.
One such rally occurred on September 5, 1882 when 10,000 workers took
unpaid leave and marched from City Hall to Union Square in New York City.
The idea for workers to take time off as a “workingman’s holiday” caught
on in other highly industrialized places in the country, and some states even
passed legislation recognizing it. Eventually, the 1886 protest march in New
York would be recognized as the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history.
It wouldn’t be until 1894 that the federal government would make Labor Day
a national holiday. Again in Chicago, in May of 1894, employees of the Pullman Palace Car company went on strike to protest the firing of union representatives and wage cuts. By June 26, the American Railroad Union called for
a boycott of all Pullman Palace Car Co.’s railway cars, which caused a major
problem for railroads across the country.
In an attempt to end the strike, the U.S. government sent troops to Chicago,
which sparked city-wide riots and cost the lives of dozens of workers. Workers
across the nation were enraged, and the federal government needed desperately to make peace, or face additional protests and strikes that would further
damage the country’s manufacturing sector. So, they quickly passed a law
making Labor Day a federally recognized holiday in D.C. and the territories.
It was a somewhat tumultuous beginning to what would later become a day
of respite for those who have fought so hard to make work easier for future
generations.

Coping With Grief and
Significant Emotional Loss
Sep 4 - Sep 10, 2015
By Jeff Zhorne, M.A
D
istraught and running her fingers over weepy eyes, Cindy related how
her 29-year-old son died of a drug overdose and was found in a portable
toilet in Los Angeles. A sheriff had visited her home to tell her what had
happened.
like everything is all right. We put on our happy face, our go-to-work face,
because society gives us about three days to grieve and you’d better be back
to work on the fourth day. Later, we hear things like, “It’s been a year, aren’t
you over it by now?”
“It’s about your son,” he started.
In tears, Cindy described how she would have broken everything in her house
and bolted out, had not the sheriff been there.
Grieving people can continue to stuff the feelings, shove them away or numb
themselves until the losses become an ever-growing weight being carried
around. Buried pain is very real, has energy and doesn’t go away on its own.
Unresolved grief will make itself known when least expected. Reactions
become disproportionate to circumstances. Our emotional, mental and
physical well-being suffers.
Cindy’s terror, heartache and confusion capture the shock of grief.
Unfortunately, as a society, we are not trained or educated to cope with
devastating loss experiences. Some people simply stuff it and try to move
through life. Others feel they’ve run out of tears.
Healing opens the way to joy, peace of mind and health. Recovery starts by
being able to freely express all the thoughts and emotions connected with
loss. Maybe it’s regret, which is often associated with loss or grieving the loss
of unrealized hopes, dreams and expectations.
Many have suffered so many losses they don’t remember why they hurt
anymore. Loss on top of loss on top of loss, all wound up like a ball of yarn.
Along comes another loss, and it’s one more wrap around a huge ball of
hurt. Over time we can start to feel detached or numb. Life doesn’t touch us
in the deepest places of our hearts.
Those who become tired of temporary pain relief, of quenching in, can move
toward expanding their lives and relationships through grief counseling.
They can gain tools for finishing unfinished emotional business to move
beyond loss. Grief Recovery offers some of those tools and skills to be able to
cherish fond memories of loved ones, risk intimacy again and find freedom
to make healthy choices.
“Don’t you tell me my son is dead!” Cindy screamed. “Don’t you do it!”
Some may wake up one day and discover they have shut off feelings
completely. Others say, “I can’t get over my husband leaving me” or “My life
stopped when she died.”

We get bewildered by not knowing what to do about unresolved pain. It
sounds so overwhelming. Often, grieving people wind up faking it and acting

SANTA CLARITA GAZETTE & FREE CLASSIFIEDS

Sports Highlights
By Tim Haddock
High School Football
No football teams from the Santa Clarita Valley were
ranked in the CIF Southern Section preseason polls.
None of the Foothill League teams made the top 10
in the West Valley Division. Santa Clarita was not
ranked in the East Valley Division.
That might change after Week Zero. The Saugus
High School football team posted an impressive win
over Simi Valley, the No. 8 team in the Southern
Section Western Division poll. That bodes well for
the other teams in the Foothill League. Saugus is
considered a middle of the pack team in the Foothill League by media outlets. If the Centurions can
knock off a ranked team on the road in their season
opener, then maybe they can find a spot in the top 10
of their own division.
Saugus beat Simi Valley, 37-21. The score was tied
at halftime, 21-21. Saugus linebacker Daniel Gilmartin intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards for a
touchdown in the third quarter. That put Saugus up
34-21. The Saugus defense shut out Simi Valley in
the second half. While the defense was strong for
Saugus, the offense was equally effective. Quarterback Louis Eusebi rushed for two touchdowns and
threw a touchdown pass. Jaime Whisler caught a
touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Clock management on offense and big plays on
defense might be a winning combination for Saugus
this season.
Santa Clarita Christian might crack the top 10 soon
enough after a dominating, 54-0 shutout over Blair
from Pasadena in their season opener. Santa Clarita
Christian quarterback Tristan Miller threw six
touchdown passes and had 332 yards through the
air. Caden Brenner caught three touchdown passes.
Tight end Tyler Kalinske caught two touchdown
passes. Jacob Moss was the leading receiver with
eight catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. The
Santa Clarita Christian defense held Blair to negative
yards in total offense.
West Ranch quarterback Jackson Clark had quite
a debut in his team’s season opener against San
Marcos. West Ranch blew out San Marcos, 62-14, at
Valencia High School. Clark threw five touchdown
passes and rushed for two more. He had 290 yards
passing and 30 yards rushing in the game.
100-meter breaststroke, but did not qualify for the
final.
But Clark wasn’t quite the one-man show. Adam
Varga-Thompson caught two touchdown passes and
was the leading receiver with six catches for 124
yards. Jake Rice caught three passes, two for touchdowns, and had 95 yards. Running back Paul Riccio
carried the ball only five times, gained 83 yards and
scored a touchdown. West Ranch is supposed to be
one of the worst teams in the Foothill League, but it
didn’t look like that against San Marcos.
Volleyball
The Golden Valley football team started its season
on the right foot. The Grizzlies beat Antelope Valley, 23-6, in their season opener at Canyon High. It
might not be as impressive as West Ranch’s offensive
explosion or Saugus’ suffocating defense, but it’s
always nice to start the season with a win. Quarterback Victor Corona had an effective game with
two touchdown passes and 108 yards through the
air. Alex Escamilla added a rushing touchdown for
Golden Valley.
The only football team from the Santa Clarita Valley to lose in the opening week was Canyon. The
Cowboys were blown out by Calabasas, and its new
coach Casey Clausen, 49-14. Canyon didn’t score in
the first half. Its first touchdown came in the third
quarter. Calabasas led 35-0 at halftime. It doesn’t
sound pretty.
Hart and Valencia didn’t play in Week Zero. But,
Hart did have a scrimmage against Highland on
Thursday. The Indians won easily, 44-6. Hart opens
for real against Downey on Friday night.
Valencia is on the road against Palmdale for its season opener on Friday.
Swimming
Hart High’s Nikol Popov tested her swimming
skills in international waters at the FINA World
Junior Championships in Singapore. She was fifth
in the 50-meter breaststroke and 16th in the 100-meter breaststroke. She reached the semifinals in the
Wilk’s Veteran Bill Killed
in Senate Appropriations
Committee
I
n an effort to affirm the public’s gratitude for our men and
women serving in the military, Assemblyman Scott Wilk
(R-Santa Clarita) introduced a bill that would allow recipients of special recognition military license plates to enter
all California State Parks for free. Last week, AB 240 was
killed in the Senate Appropriations Committee, however, so
it will not go forward.
“Our country’s war heroes deserve the highest praise and
it’s concerning to see the majority party spend excessive
amounts of money on a bullet train to nowhere, but they
can’t spare a few bucks for our country’s most honorable
war heroes? Allowing complimentary entry to our state’s incredible park system is the least we can do to thank veterans
and their family members for their service and sacrifice,”
said Assemblyman Wilk.
AB 240 would have allowed owners of the following license
plates to enter state parks for free: Purple Heart, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Ex-Prisoner of War, Congressional Medal of
Honor, Gold Star Family, and Legion of Valor.
The 38th Assembly District encompasses Simi Valley, the northwestern section of the San Fernando Valley and most of the Santa
Clarita Valley.
Popov is a senior at Hart.
Valencia High graduate Kyle Ensing led the United
States Youth National Volleyball team to its best
finish in the Boys U19 World Championship in Argentina. Ensing led the United States with eight kills
against Russia in the quarterfinals. The U.S. lost, 3-0.
The United States went 5-1 in the tournament and
reached the quarterfinals for the first time in tournament history. The U.S. was 4-0 in pool play, knocking
off Turkey, Belgium, France and Argentina. The U.S.
beat Mexico in its Round of 16 match before losing
to Russia in the quarterfinals.
Ensing had 55 kills in the six matches for Team
USA.
IndyCar
Gabby Chaves, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport
on the Verizon IndyCar Series, was 14th in the season
finale race at the Grand Prix of Sonoma. Chaves
won the rookie of the year in the IndyCar Series. He
was making his IndyCar Series debut with the team
owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta.
“It was a very eventful race for us,” Chaves said. “We
barely made it to the start; actually we didn’t even
make the starting grid, so we started about half a lap
back. We had a battery problem, so that was unfortunate. We think we had the right strategy and had
the right pace, but once we started, it was just like we
didn’t really know where to go and it was hard to get
rhythm behind other cars that we were much faster
than.”
Scott Dixon won the Grand Prix of Sonoma. It was
his third win of the season. He also won the IndyCar
Series championship, the fourth of his career.

Water-Efficient Landscape Improvements
at City’s Transit Maintenance Facility
A
lready a LEED-gold certified site, the City
of Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance
Facility has completed construction for its
Landscape Improvements Project which
improves the facility’s landscape and water
use.
The water efficiency project accomplished the
removal of approximately 55,000 square feet
of water-thirsty fescue grass and has replaced
it with water-friendly, drought-resistant
shrubs and mulch. The swap will result in an
estimated 1.6 million gallons of annual water
savings—an estimated 75 percent reduction
from the current 2.1 million gallons per year
to 515,000 gallons per year.
In addition to removing the grass, the
existing overhead rotor irrigation system has
been replaced with water-efficient irrigation.
To improve irrigation monitoring and allow
for centralized control, new smart controllers
have been installed. Irrigation bubblers have
also been placed to avoid wasteful over spray
onto site fixtures and separate irrigation has
been installed for trees to accommodate for
drought conditions. The facility has also
received seven new river rock catch basins to
improve site drainage.
Total cost for the construction of this project
was roughly $130,000, with an off-set of
$50,000 in rebate funds via the Castaic
Lake Water Agency’s Large Landscape and
Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional
Turf Removal Program.
This project is an example of the City’s
efforts to improve water use including
plans to remove turf on Valencia Boulevard
medians, and adding 90 more smart irrigation
controllers to the City’s irrigation system.
These controllers reduce water use as much
as 35 percent.
The City of Santa Clarita Transit
Maintenance Facility is located at 28250
Constellation Road. For more information
on the facility, visit santaclaritatransit.com.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER
Ken Striplin
Marsha McLean
September 2015
September 2015
Over the last several years, the City and its partners have
worked hard to revitalize our downtown area. After
talking with merchants and property owners in the area,
we rebranded it “Old Town Newhall.” We have also
added several public infrastructure projects, including:
the Newhall Community Center, Veterans Historical
Plaza, the Jan Heidt Newhall Metrolink Station, the
Old Town Newhall Library, new building facades, new
street furniture, landscaping and decorative sidewalks, the
landscaped roundabout and public art. Regular special
events have brought activity and new potential customers to the area via the popular
“Thursdays at Newhall” series.
With the loss of the redevelopment program by the State, we are seeking new and
creative ways to continue our revitalization of this area. Specifically, following the
Old Town Newhall Specific Plan, which was created after extensive outreach to and
input from the community, the City is interested in finding a development partner
to build a mixed-use project, anchored by an art house movie theater, on the former
redevelopment block property across from the Newhall Library.
To achieve this, the City opened a Request for Qualifications to find a suitable
development partner. Five different developers submitted proposals, and those were
narrowed down. In July, the Santa Clarita City Council selected development partners
to negotiate with; Laemmle Theatre for the potential development of a portion of
the “redevelopment block” into a six-screen art house movie theater, and also with
Serrano Development Group/Pacific Coast Housing Development for the potential
development of a portion of the redevelopment block into a mixed-use project with
new restaurants and retail stores on the first floor and residential units above. A third
portion of the redevelopment block is being proposed as a City-funded public parking
structure.
While these negotiations are expected to take a few months, and
nothing is set in stone, the goal is to bring proposals to the City
Council for consideration later this year on all three projects.
I would like to encourage you to stay engaged with the
continued revitalization of our Old Town Newhall.
Visit www.oldtownnewhall.com for information about
these development projects, as well as events and
happenings.
Fall has arrived with all of the great City events
you have come to know and enjoy. Your city
works hard to plan and implement workshops
and programs that are family-friendly,
informative and a great contributor to the
amazing high quality of life we all enjoy.
On Wednesday, September 9 we will commemorate our 10th annual
Evening of Remembrance at the Youth Grove in Central Park. (For
those that wish to participate in the Walk of Remembrance prior
to the event, meet at the Central Park flagpole at 6:45 p.m.) The
Youth Grove—a project completed by the City, the Blue Ribbon
Task Force and community members—serves as a memorial and an
education tool to promote safe driving among teens. The Evening of
Remembrance, which begins at 7:15 pm, seeks to encourage teens to
drive safely. The annual event is held to remember local youth who
lost their lives in traffic-related incidents. Visit santa-clarita.com/
blueribbon for more information.
If you have a pet, you will want to attend the City’s Pet Preparedness
Workshop on Tuesday, September 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Old
Town Newhall Library, 24500 Main Street. The free workshop is
open to everyone and will provide pet owners with everything they
need to know to keep their furry friends safe in the event of a major
emergency. For more information, visit santa-clarita.com/emergency.
On Saturday, September 19, the City will once again host the annual
River Rally event, beginning at 8 a.m. River Rally is a community
cleanup that attracts thousands of volunteers. Participants help to
clean up a portion of the Santa Clara River, as well as participate
