Samson Pumps has been delivering
pumps for industrial applications for
decades, and the lifetime of the liquid
ring pumps is impressive.

Liquid Ring Pumps
– Expect a Long Lifetime
Pumps in action
“15-20 years lifetime with daily operation is not unusual for a Samson
liquid ring pump. Some Vacuum
Trucks will be equipped with a Samson pump and will go from fleet
owner to fleet owner throughout
the years without replacement.
We have seen pumps on Vacuum
Trucks that run for more than
18,000 hours without any repairs
or significant servicing. This gives
us confidence in our technology
and a good feeling every time we
ship a new pump to our customers,” states CTO Kelvin S. Jensen.
“However, if a pump should break
down and a replacement pump
is needed, Samson Pumps will
be ready to deliver a replacement
pump without a long lead-time.
Short delivery time is simply one
of the cornerstones in our company DNA. We strive every day
to outperform our competitors on
delivery time and quality. We have
learned that these elements are
key to Vacuum Truck builders and
fleet owners,” CTO Kelvin S. Jensen
continues.

Certification 03
Samson pumps ATEX Zone 0 –
approved for use in potentially
explosive areas
,
Upon request
from several of our
customers, we’ve
decided to have the
four model series
become Zone 0approved
The ATEX directive is describing what
equipment is allowed in an environment
with an explosive atmosphere.
Certification
From now on, the Samson Pumps
model series KE, KL, KM and KS
will be able to be used in areas
where there is a risk of explosion.
The four model series are now
being certified in accordance with
the ATEX Product Directive and are
thus eligible for use in potentially
explosive areas, throughout the EU.
“Upon request from several of our
customers, we’ve decided to have
the four model series become Zone
0-approved. This means the pumps
may be used in areas where there is
the highest potential risk of explosion – and where the most stringent
requirements for pumps are also in
place. With Zone 0 approval, the
pumps are also approved for use
in Zone 1 and Zone 2, where the
risk of explosion is relatively lower
than in Zone 0,” explains Samson
Pumps project and quality manager
Jan Steiniche Christiansen, who is
in charge of the company’s ATEX
Zone 0 project.
Jan Steiniche Christiansen,
project and quality manager
at Samson Pumps.
New sales potential
Jan is convinced that the ATEX
certification will lead to new sales
opportunities for the company’s
products.
“The quality of Samson’s pumps is
well known. With the ATEX certification, the pumps can now be used
in Zone 0 areas and are the obvious choice for manufacturers that
offer vehicles for use in many of the
places with a potentially explosive
atmosphere. This applies, for example, to gas stations, fuel plants,
refineries, biogas plants, airports,
sewage treatment plants, etc. The
ATEX certification will undoubtedly
also be noticed among our many
satisfied end customers. If they’re
in doubt as to whether they’re
operating in any of the risk zones,
they can confidently use Samson
pumps because the Zone 0 approval covers all zones,” says Jan.
Comprehensive process
TÜV Nord is the certification agency
that is issuing the ATEX certification
for the Samson pumps. The certification process is a demanding one,
and it also encompasses the ISO
9001 certification of the company.
The Samson pumps, as well as

their production and use, have been
tested and studied down to the last
detail. The entire process is documented through a large number of
manuals, certificates, declarations,
data sheets, compliance sheets,
risk assessments, calculations and
test results that are now assembled
in a single technical dossier.
Manuals for vehicle manufacturers and end users
Among the contents of the manuals
are detailed descriptions and illustrations of how vehicle manufacturers must incorporate the Samson
pumps into their products, and of
how the end users are to use and
maintain the pumps when out on
the job in a potentially explosive
area.
“This is thoroughly descriptive material that will be very useful and
applicable. It’s perfect for both the
vehicle manufacturers we supply
and for the many end customers
who use Samson pumps in their
daily work,” Jan notes.

Manufacturing a Vacuum Truck
traditionally involves a substantial
amount of engineering hours to
ensure that the truck is equipped
with a highly efficient Vacuum system that fits the slim body of a truck
chassis. This masterpiece of art
is what makes building a Vacuum
Truck unique, and Samson Pumps’
expertise is behind the evolution
of a waste equipment market that
is growing every year. However,
Samson Pumps has seen an increased demand for know-how
and practical experience with liquid
ring pumps – especially in the USA
where vane pumps – or blowers –
traditionally have dominated the
Vacuum Truck market.
Less noise and pollution is the
new black
The working environment for truck
operators and government legislation to reduce factors like noise and
pollution is affecting demands on
truck owners. Liquid ring pumps are
becoming a natural first choice for
Vaccum Truck Fleet owners who
are trying to adapt to a changing
business.
Samson Pumps has delivered liquid
ring pumps for European, high-end
Vacuum Truck builders for decades,
and through a partnership with the
Northville, Michigan-based Jack
Doheny Companies, the ideal turnkey vacuum solution was born. The
new, complete solutions, which include vacuum pumps, liquid separators, water tanks, cooling and
temperature control systems, are
delivered as a complete vacuum

That’s a game-changer for anybody
who lacks proper knowledge about
liquid ring pumps,” says CTO Kelvin
Storm Jensen from Samson
Pumps.
“Based on our many years in the
Vacuum Truck business we see that
the biggest disadvantage with liquid
ring pumps relates to the installation
process, which is more important
and complicated than that of other
vacuum pumps,” Kelvin explains.
Liquid ring pumps normally do not
need frequent service intervals, but
in case there is a need to service the
VacPac system, it will take less time
than with a normal vacuum system.
Since VacPac can be lifted off the
truck as fast as it was installed,
the downtime during truck maintenance will be very short.

Volvo vacuum tanker that was
originally fitted with a Hibbon liquid
ring which Mantank replaced approximately four years ago for the

many jobs that this machine can’t

In operation everyday
Mantanks vehicles are in operation
everyday all over the UK operating from two depots and it’s fair to
say the work that these vehicles
carry out are some of the toughest
assignments only a few industrial
cleaning companies could undertake. “We can only do these jobs
because we have the skilled and

Nigel.
Not all jobs undertaken are three

After 17 years in this job we here
at Mantank have the confidence
to tackle any Heavy sludge up

favored Liquid rings.
Nigel is married to Julie and they
have two sons Steven 22 year

due to start an apprenticeship in
the truck/tanker business. In his
spare time Nigel likes to spend
time with the family and switch
off from work, although sometimes it’s hard when you’re out

include game and clay shooting
throughout the year, training of
his Labrador gun dogs, walking
and skiing at least twice a year.

HISTORY 07
Who the heck is Samson?
Down memory lane
In 1944, the village of Tange near
Viborg became home to a new type
of company: Tange Specialværksted.
This “special workshop” specialized
in the repair of horseshoes and
reaper-binders and listened exactly
to what their customers were asking
for. In other words, developments
in the agricultural world influenced
the development of the workshop
– and vice versa. Before long, the
workshop was servicing most of the
surrounding area, repairing everything from bridles to sewer cleaners,
the latter of which gave rise to the
first liquid ring vacuum pumps. Demand for this new type of pump
grew quickly as new applications
were found. In 1950 the company
was renamed Maskinfabrikken
Samson.
Soon, development of the first
vacuum tankers were to prove that
Fabrikken Samson was here to stay.
To keep up with increasing mechanization, the factory expanded significantly during the following years.
In 1965, we established our first
vacuum division. Since that point,
we have focused on producing the
world’s best vacuum pump.
Across a range of industries
Today, we help customers in a
range of industries, such as offshore, fishing, food, process and
waste management. As the only
company to focus solely on the
production of liquid ring vacuum
pumps, we have a wealth of expertise and know-how at our disposal. We therefore don’t compete
on price. Instead, we set the bar
for quality and reliability that saves
money in the long term and gives
peace of mind throughout the life
of the pump.

Constant development
Every one of our pumps undergoes
constant development. Time and
again our products are acclaimed
both at home and abroad for their
performance and reliability. Ambition, investment and potential
are just part of the reason for our
success. None of what we have
achieved would have been possible
without the right mix of talented
employees.
We know our customers and we
know their challenges. We, therefore,
develop strong solutions that meet
their requirements. Today, tomorrow

“For our work, Samson’s liquid ring

reliability, so I couldn’t even imagine

says Brian, who owns Midtjysk

Samson pumps
– extreme reliability
“In our world, there’s nothing that
lasts forever, but Samson’s liquid
ring pumps are well on their way.
They are extremely reliable and
practically maintenance-free.
Beyond the regular dose of water
they require, we give them a
squeeze of grease once a week –
and nothing more. With just that,
they run day after day. We’ve also
had some rotary vane pumps, but
they’re no match for the liquid ring
pumps,” Brian says.
“Reliability means everything in a
company like ours. If a pump breaks
down, the vacuum tanker has to
stop, and that costs us between
$700 and $900 a day, in addition to
the income we lose out on. Luckily,
we haven’t had these problems
even once with a Samson pump,
though we did with a rotary vane
pump that we had on one of our
vehicles a few years ago. We’ve
learned from our mistakes.
Since then we’ve exclusively used
Samson pumps whenever we purchase new vacuum tanker trucks.
We’ve purchased a couple of used
trucks that were fitted with rotary
vane pumps. We left those pumps
in the trucks until they wore out,
after which we replaced them with
Samson liquid ring pumps,” Brian
recounts.
,
Midtjysk Kloakservice ApS has
been in business for 45 years,
and Brian Larsen has been with
the company for 25 years. He was

“We very rarely turn down a job if
we have the expertise and necessary technical equipment to get
the job done right,” says Brian,
who is not afraid to take on particularly demanding assignments.
Midtjysk Kloakservice ApS recently
accepted one such job, which consisted of emptying sand and other
debris from a drainage pipe near a
highway construction project in the
East Jutland region.
“We had to get 17 meters below
ground to clean out the drainage

Eco-friendly solutions
from Grundfos
In addition to the high reliability of
Samson pumps, Brian appreciates
the fact that they are environmentally friendly. The pumps are lownoise, and the liquid ring technology
emits only steam, as opposed to
the harmful oil fumes emitted by
rotary vane pumps.
“For many years, we’ve had the
circulator pump manufacturer
Grundfos as a customer. We clean
underneath the casting machines
in their foundry, where the company manufactures aluminum pump
cases. The production process
leaves tiny aluminum chips and
flakes, and it is our job to vacuum
up and dispose of the mess.
Grundfos is a company that places
great importance on both the working environment and the environment in general, so using Samson’s
eco-friendly liquid ring pumps here is
beneficial,” says Brian, who has no
doubt that the next pumps he will
buy will also be Samson models.
“Some of the big manufacturers
of rotary vane pumps have also
begun producing liquid ring pumps,
but from what I’ve heard from my
colleagues, they don’t work particularly well. It’s also an entirely new
area for them, while Samson Pumps
has been producing liquid ring

This work is often done in cities,
where the Samson pumps come
into their own. Compared to rotary
vane pumps, which make far too
much noise while running, Samson’s liquid ring pumps are practically noiseless. This is, of course,
a big advantage for the workers
operating the pumps, but also for
the people who live and work in the
surrounding area.
“The environment and working area
also benefit when we use Samson pumps. Because the pumps
are water-based, they only emit
harmless steam, which evaporates quickly and doesn’t bother

the operator. Oil-based rotary vane
pumps, on the other hand, emit oil
fumes that cause problems for both
the operator and the surrounding
environment. If the vacuum tanker
truck is parked next to a building,
the oil fumes can stain the wall. If a
rotary vane pump has a downwardfacing exhaust, the oil fumes settle
like a film that looks awful and can
damage the asphalt. We can avoid
this type of trouble and damage
by using liquid ring pumps from
Samson,” Ulrik explains.

Oil-based rotary vane pumps
emit oil fumes that cause problems for both the operator and
the surrounding environment.
This can be avoided by using
liquid ring pumps.
The fact that Samson pumps are
incredibly reliable is very important to Ulrik Sinding. Getting a
vacuum tanker to run properly is a
costly matter when such a vehicle
can cost more than $400,000.
For this reason, high reliability is
golden.
“We only very rarely have breakdowns with a Samson pump,
and if something actually does
happen, it’s usually only a minor
issue that we can fix ourselves.”
For example, if we’re cleaning up
slurry or molasses, which creates
a lot of foam, nothing goes wrong
with a Samson liquid ring pump.
It simply ‘spits’ the foam out as
soon as it’s created. When a rotary
vane pump is exposed to foam,
however, it immediately makes the
dreaded ‘ping’ noise! And then
the pump’s working day is over,”
Ulrik explains.
Pump from 1996 still running
Djursland Kloakservice ApS purchased its first Samson pump in
1996, and it’s still running today,
just not in Djursland. The company has a policy of replacing
its vacuum tanker trucks after

around 12 years of ‘service’. The
vacuum tanker was thus sold to
a colleague who still uses the
vehicle and the incredibly durable
Samson pump on a daily basis.
A few years ago, Ulrik began offering dry matter vacuuming, such as
the removal of ash from combustion plants. As of yet, he is not sure
if there will be enough work to purchase a dedicated – and expensive – dry matter vacuum. He therefore decided initially to fit a
vacuum tanker truck with two
Samson KS1025 pumps. This
proved to be an effective solution, and a high number of orders
quickly came in – so many, in
fact, that after a couple of years
there was a basis for investing in
a costly mammoth vacuum that is
designed on a completely different
pumping principle than Samson’s
liquid ring pumps.
“Today we’re doing a lot of work
with dry matter suction, which has
become an important business
area for us. And it was the strong
and effective pumps from Samson
that made it possible for us to
move into this area,” Ulrik notes.
