Service to Armed Forces & International Services
The American Red Cross (ARC) provides an around-the-clock, around-the-world network that allows service members to
stay in touch with their families during births, deaths and serious illness. The ARC also provides information and referral
services and works to trace family members, enabling them to communicate during war, civil unrest or disasters in other
countries. We also offer “Get to Know Us” outreach to Service Members of all branches and their families.

provided through the casework process. Volunteers present Community Disaster Education information to groups and individuals to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and other emergencies.

recognition and retention of volunteers from ages 10 and up. One of the volunteer programs we offer, Ready When the Time
Comes, trains employees from partner companies to become disaster volunteers to be deployed in the event of a large scale

An important additional source of volunteer power is generated through RSVP. This is a program of the Corporation for National & Community Service which is sponsored locally by the Carolina Lowcountry Chapter. Volunteers must be 55 years or
older. Service opportunities are based on time available, talents and interest area. They are then matched with over 150
agencies needing volunteer help. Areas include working with children, delivering meals to the homebound, helping the

Clara Barton
Clara Barton was a Massachusetts school teacher who went to work as a clerk
for the government in Washington D.C. When the Civil War broke out in
1861, she saw the need for a battlefield nurse and resigned her job. Ms. Barton or the “Angel of the Battlefield” as she was known, began her work caring for soldiers on April 20, 1861. In 1869 she traveled to Europe and learned
about the International Red Cross Movement.
With a determined spirit, she gathered other Americans together and established the American Red Cross on May 21, 1881. Twelve years later, Clara
aided nearly 30,000 people who were left homeless after a hurricane on the
Sea Islands of South Carolina.
She served as the first president of the American National Red Cross. She resigned her membership in the Red Cross in 1904 and died at age 91 at her
home in Glen Echo, Maryland on April 12, 1912.
Carolina Lowcountry Chapter
2010 Clara Barton Society Campaign Co-Chairs
Laurie & Steve Meyer
When Steve and I accepted the chairmanship of the Clara Barton campaign a year ago, we questioned our
qualifications to head a capital campaign. We knew raising half a million dollars was going to be a challenge, but we agreed it was a calling we needed to accept. Steve had worked on the Red Cross board for a
number of years, and I was peripherally involved with Red Cross projects such as the Old Village Home,
Garden and Art Tour. We had always respected the organization and the fabulous folks we had met along
the way.
Then Haiti happened. As we were assembling our dream team of volunteers, this incomprehensible disaster
tore into our earth. It also assured Steve and me that our choice to take the task and raise the bar high was
the right one. Sixteen volunteers - the knowing and the innocent - accepted our invitation to share the Red
Cross story with the Lowcountry - and of course, to ask for money.
This was not an easy assignment. All signs in the economy pointed toward bleak. But our committee
learned a few facts during our four month campaign: Charlestonians are generous and giving. Charlestonians are caring and kind. And most of all, Charlestonians come forward when asked and take the Red
Cross past its financial goal. The Charleston community provided the funds needed to assure our great
community is prepared for the possibility of our own disaster.
While chairing the committee with Steve, I learned a few compelling points about Charleston. Our beautiful city is perched to experience every major natural disaster short of a volcano and mudslide. Charleston
must be prepared to open more shelters than any other single chapter in the U.S., other than Tampa
Bay. First Responders call our Red Cross volunteers to assist victims of home fires with their immediate
needs such as food, shelter, clothing and even replacement medications. In addition, our Red Cross,
through the ingenuity of a couple of incredible teenagers, is working to assure that its students graduate
with CPR certification. And this is just the beginning. There is so much more that the Red Cross does.
Steve and I are astounded by the generosity of the Lowcountry - its people and its businesses. And we are
grateful to the members of our Clara Barton committee, which succeeded in the task that at one point
seemed unreachable. We want to thank everyone who donated money to the Clara Barton campaign. We
also want to thank our fabulous dream team of fund raisers - we could not have surpassed our goal without
your talent, time, and generosity.
Lastly, we want to thank Louise Welch Williams, Katherine Maybank, and Gordon Robertson for support,
professionalism, and optimism. We couldn't have done it without you!
Laurie and Steve Meyer
The American Red Cross, Carolina Lowcountry Chapter
would like to thank everyone who has given their time and
resources to make the Clara Barton Campaign a success.

Repatriation of US Citizens Following the Earthquake in Haiti
American Red Cross, Carolina Lowcountry Chapter volunteers and staff supported the basic needs of US citizens, who arrived at the Charleston International Airport from Haiti,
through repatriation. We provided emotional support, comfort kits, blankets, food and hydration. We also helped them make telephone calls.
Over the course of 16 days, the Red Cross worked in close coordination with our government partners to assess and help meet the needs of the US citizens who had been evacuated from Haiti. We had volunteers at the airport 24 hours a day/7 days a week, assisting
the evacuees with their immediate basic needs. In all, the Red Cross assisted 874 people,
served 6,681 snacks, provided 423 comfort kits, containing personal supplies and toiletries and 850 blankets & teddy bears.
The Tiffany Circle is a society of women leaders and philanthropists. By investing $10,000 annually in their local American Red Cross chapters, these women follow in the footsteps of a long line
of women leaders who have helped the Red Cross serve the American public in times of war and
peace with disaster assistance, blood collection, safety training and countless other community
assistance services.
The name Tiffany and the $10,000 amount have historical precedent. The society is named for the
beautiful Tiffany windows in the Board of Governors Hall at Red Cross national headquarters in
Washington, D.C. These windows, produced by the Tiffany Studios, were commissioned by Red
Cross President Mabel Boardman in 1917. As an act of reconciliation and hope, they were paid for
with a $5,000 gift from the Women's Relief Corps of the North and $5,000 from the United
Daughters of the Confederacy of the South.
The women in these windows personify virtues at work in the Red Cross Movement: hope, mercy,
faith, charity, truth and fortitude. Members of the Tiffany Circle provide living examples of these
virtues in their local communities, by ensuring the Red Cross has the ability to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to life's emergencies.
For more information about the Tiffany Circle Society of Women Leaders, please contact
