Putting Her Best Foot Forward
The Shoe Hive’s Christen Green forgoes colorful footwear for a summer of neutrals and proves that no career path is linear.
“Everyone needs a gold sequined
[AGL] oxford! I actually ruffle
mine up—you can play with the
sequins to make them as crazy or
as subdued as you want them to
be. AGLs are probably one of our
top three brands, both in terms
of quality and sales. Three sisters
design them out of Italy and they
may be the coolest women in the
world. Wear them with a white
sundress and instead of looking
girly you look urban and cool. Wear
them with skinny jeans and a black
blazer and they are good for a night
out, and ultra comfortable.”

“I actually am a very casual dresser You will
see me in denim or easy, breezy pieces. Having a sandal [Stuart Weitzman Greek sandals] that’s not a flip flop for summer is imperative. I love my flip-flops, we have Tkees
and it’s one of my favorite brands, I just don’t
think they are appropriate for the workplace—even a retail store. Having a trendier,
more stylish alternative that is very well-made
and will last all summer is important. Even
though this is a gladiator, this is a style that
can be worn for years and not go out of style.”

“Besides Tory Burch, our top selling bag is a
brand called Annabel Ingall. Typically we sell the
totes in lots of different colors, but last year they
released the satchel. I like a structured bag so the
satchel is a little bit more me and the chili red
color is very in right now. We’re not seeing a lot of
true reds, but this red with a hint of orange sort
of serves as a color neutral. Except for hot pink,
there really isn’t much I wouldn’t pair this with.”
Sophie Hume works here and is the
longest serving employee at The
Shoe Hive. She’s been here since
it opened. She is moving to Boston and we are very sad to see her
go, but this T-shirt is her legacy. It
[has] all the streets of Old Town
that radiate off of King Street and
it has the zip code on the back. For
those of us that live and work in
Old Town it is kind of a cult, we
love it here enough to put it on a Tshirt. Our customers love it as well
and we get a lot of tourists. Tourists
are not likely to buy a Stuart Weitzman pump, but they will buy a $30
T-shirt that represents Alexandria.”
