The Spirituality of the Ordinary Time
La Espiritualidad del Tiempo Ordinario
Beloved brothers and sisters, the Ordinary Time is the
longest liturgical season in the Church, encompassing 34
weeks each year. Because other liturgical seasons begin or end
with movable feasts, the length of Ordinary time can vary
slightly; however, 34 weeks is the more common length. The
weeks are numbered, e.g., the first Sunday of Ordinary Time,
the second Sunday of Ordinary Time, and so on.
Ordinary Time is technically one liturgical season,
though it is divided into two periods.
The two time periods were merely
referred to as “the season after the
Baptism of the Lord” and “the season
after Pentecost.” The liturgical color
of Ordinary Time is green; however,
other appropriate colors are worn on
particular feast days. Green is a sign
of life that comes not only as a gift
from God but also as blessing that
we appropriate through the rich
vegetation's that promotes life and
well being.
The spiritual ingredient of this
period is drawn from the testimony
that Peter gave in Acts 10: 38 that
“the Spirit of the Lord was upon
Jesus and He went about doing
good.” We begin the ordinary time
immediately after the baptism of Jesus; an event that
inaugurates Jesus’ public life. So Catholics are led by the Spirit
to contemplate the presence and the love of God in the
ordinary, simple, and humble events of life and human
activities. It is a moment to realize that our God is close to His
people as made manifest in the stories of the different biblical
characters that we encounter in our Sacred Liturgy. In this
period, the spiritual logic and drama is seen in this phrase
“Slow and steady wins the race.” (No prisa, no pausa). It is
characteristic of a pilgrim Church and a pilgrim people to
walk on the footsteps of our Divine Master.
With the spiritual pilgrim-paradigm of engaging every
event of life; of appreciating every faith story; and of
welcoming every difficult situation in the light of abandoning
oneself to the Will of God, we embrace the spiritual canticle of
St. Ignatius of Loyola’s holy indifference to all created things:
“not preferring health to sickness, riches to poverty, honor to
humiliation, long life to a short one. We wish only for those
conditions that will aid our pursuit of the goal for which we
have been created.”
Dear Sacred Heart Family let us continue our journey of
faith in the different settings of our spiritual and pastoral life.
May we gain strength from who we are and the mysteries of
salvation that we celebrate. In this Ordinary Time of the Year,
may the Lord remember us like Noah, favour us like Moses,
intervene for us like Esther and anoint us like David. May Jesus
be a Saviour for us and our loved ones and families as we
continue to be one family.
Sacred Heart, One Family: One Family, Sacred Heart!
Have a Graceful Week!!!
de dedicar todos los eventos de la vida a la voluntad de Dios;
familia.
¡Sagrado Corazón, Una Familia: Una Familia, Sagrado
Corazón!
¡¡¡Que tengan una Semana llena de Gracia!!!
