hank-you for picking up
Outword, or for reading
us online. Sometimes it’s
hard for us to believe, but this is
our 17 year Anniversary Issue.
Many of you have been with
us all those years, some for a
shorter time and some of you
are new readers. Either way,
you, our readers, along with our
advertisers and other supporters,
are what makes it all possible,
and for that, we thank-you for
an incredible journey!
For over 17 years, our goal has been to
keep you informed, inspired, amused and
aware of the issues of the day, all the while
with Pride in who we are as a community.
It amazes me how it all comes together
every single issue, like a big puzzle, twice a
month. Every two weeks we start with a
clean slate with questions to

and report on; what’s

with people
who love our

those who hate us.
These days we have new ways to keep up
the pace of everyday news and
entertainment, not only in print but also
online. Charlie Peer (who is on his 15th year
at Outword, plus a few years under his belt
with Mom … Guess What?) makes sure that
you have new content on our web site each
day and on our Facebook page which is
hovering at 5,000 friends. Charlie also makes
sure you have fun things to choose from in
our calendar as he combs through the web
sites out there looking for fun events to
include.
Our Arts Editor Chris Narloch (who has
been with us the entire 17 years plus several
years prior with the Latest Issue magazine)
finds fun movies, shows and theater to tell
you about each issue, giving you some
insight on what to see — and what to skip.
I also want to thank our contributing writers

The Center to Feds Ban Some Trans Discrimination
Hold Suicide
Prevention
Training
by Boyce Hinman
R
ecently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS) released a letter saying that the Affordable Care Act
bans discrimination against transgender people by federally
funded health care providers.
T
he Sacramento Gay
and Lesbian Center will
hold training on suicide
prevention, with experts from
two local agencies providing
insight into recognizing when
someone may be suicidal and
what you can do to help them.
“The Center often receives calls when
tragedy has occurred in the LGBT
community,” said Center Board Member
Arvin Magusara. “This is especially true
when a friend or family member attempts
or commits suicide. In the last few weeks,
two suicide attempts have led folks to our
doors and precipitated calls.”
The Effort and the National Alliance on
Mental Illness (NAMI) Sacramento will
discuss the signs of potential suicide,
develop strategies for when someone
confides that they are considering suicide
and explore what to do after someone
attempts suicide.
The proactive Suicide Prevention
Training will be on Tuesday, August 28
from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at The Center,
located at 1927 L St. and is free.
““We know that the LGBT community is
disproportionately affected, and too many
of us are left with the same concerns
‘What can I do now to help my friend/
family member/loved one?’ ‘How could I
have missed the signs?’” said Magusara.
“We don’t have all of the answers, but we
can discuss the questions.”

This means that federally funded doctors,
hospitals, clinics, nursing homes or other
health care providers (such as those paid by
Medi-Cal or Medicaid) may not discriminate
against transgender patients on the basis of
their gender identity, or their failure to
conform to stereotypical notions of
masculinity or femininity.
HHS encourages people who suffer such
discrimination to submit complaints to the
Department’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR).
Complaints may be reported to the OCR on
its web site at tiny.cc/pwhyiw
That web site contains a list of more than
ten types of health care providers which
may not discriminate against transgender
people.
Transgender people often suffer when
health care providers violate their patient’s
privacy by disclosing personal information,
from the patient’s medical records, without
the permission of the patient. This can lead
to embarrassment and harassment of the
patient.
The OCR web site says that the privacy
of these records is protected by federal law
and the OCR will investigate violations of
the patient’s right to privacy.
Romney Campaign Confirms
Support for Gay Scouts
T
he Mitt Romney for President campaign, responding to a 1994
video recently released by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation (GLAAD), has confirmed that Romney believes gay
Americans should be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts.
Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea
Saul said that Romney’s 1994 comments,
where he said that the Boy Scouts should
welcome members who are gay, “remains
Romney’s position today.”
The confirmation was made via email to
Associated Press reporter David Crary on
Aug. 5. Romney made the remarks in his bid
for the Senate at a debate against Senator
Ted Kennedy in 1994. After pointing out that
Romney had earlier stated that he would do
more for gays than Senator Kennedy, the
question put to him was “… do you support
that policy (the BSA policy banning gay
members), and if not, have you ever done
anything as a board member to oppose it?”
In the video released by GLAAD, Romney,
a former national board member of the Boy
Scouts of America, said that sexual
orientation should not be a factor when it
comes to participating in scouting.
“I feel that all people should be allowed to

participate in the Boy Scouts, regardless of
their sexual orientation,” Romney said in the
video, prefacing his remarks by stating his
belief “that the Boy Scouts of America does
a wonderful service for this country. I
support the right of the Boy Scouts of
America to decide what it wants to do on
that issue.”
“Scouts for Equality is proud to have
Governor Romney’s support on this issue
amid such a polarized political climate,” said
Scouts for Equality founder Zach Wahls
(scoutsforequality.org). “His leadership is to
be commended, and we hope he can set an
example of how people with differing
religious beliefs can come together to
support the Boy Scouts of America’s mission
to serve our communities and develop
tomorrow’s leaders, regardless of sexual
orientation.”

Hansen Revs Up Campaign
for a Win in November
W
ith less than three months to go until Election Day, it’s
back to work for Sacramento City Council Candidate
Steve Hansen. That work, says Hansen, starts on the
streets, with volunteers walking the neighborhoods of District 4.
Steve Hansen, center, kicked off his fall drive for the City Council District 4 seat with a fundraiser
and meet the candidate event at Midtown’s Bow & Arrow. Pictured with Hansen are long time
supporters Elaine Verbarg and Dennis Mangers.
“We started walking back in January,” says
Hansen. “We had amazing support from
scores of volunteers who went door-to-door,
talking to voters. We covered the district
almost three times, which was a key to our
first place finish in the primary.”
Hansen and his team will continue their
grassroots approach to win on Election Day.
“Connecting with voters is what it’s all
about,” says Hansen. “I put my cell phone
number on everything I hand out. I want
people to know they can call me with
questions or ideas.
“We have a real shot here. Some people
didn’t think much of our team going into
June, but we proved that hard work makes
the difference. It shows the voters of Land
Park, Midtown, Downtown and River Oaks
are ready for a change. We’re going to
continue to work just as hard to earn the
support of the voters. We have to keep a
high level of intensity in order to win in
November.”
Along with traditional forms of outreach,
like going door-to-door and making phone
calls, Hansen says his campaign will also
include a heavier dose of online
organizing. “Social media has become such
a powerful tool in a relatively short
amount of time. We aim to maximize our
impact through social media,” Hansen
adds, “and we’re really excited about what’s
going to happen between now and
November building a robust base of
support.”

Religious Embrace Helps Fuel
Support for Gay Marriage
F
or the first time, a new poll shows more Americans “strongly
support” same-sex marriage than “strongly oppose” it, a
finding that could be attributed to changes occurring within
organized religions, says a Presbyterian elder and lay preacher.
“For 2,000 years, religion has been the
genesis of antipathy toward homosexuals,
but now, three major American
denominations have approved ordination of
openly gay clergy,” says Paul Hartman, a
retired PBS/NPR station executive and
author of The Kairos (CarpeKairos.com), a
novel that imagines Jesus as gay.
The May survey of more than 1,000 adults
found a dramatic reversal from earlier
surveys: more adults now “strongly support”
same-sex marriage rights (39 percent) than
“strongly oppose” them (32 percent). Overall,
Langer Research Associates says, 53 percent
outwordmagazine.com
of Americans believe same-sex marriages
should be legalized – up from only 36
percent just six years ago.
“Episcopalian, Lutheran and Presbyterian
denominations have overturned centuries of
tradition in welcoming openly gay clergy,”
Hartman says. “There’s a growing realization
that religion can and should help lead us all
toward a more mature understanding and
acceptance of minority sexual orientations.”
In 2012, he says, there is a new human
rights landscape in the United States. He

Stonewall
Dems
Call
Ryan
Pick
a
Disappointment
for
LGBT
Voters
n front of the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, VA, Mitt Romney
I
announced his choice of Paul Ryan as his Vice Presidential
running mate. While many Republicans are touting the choice,
Democrats, especially gay Democrats, are calling it another slap in
the face to the gay community.
“Mitt Romney’s choice of Tea Party
darling Paul Ryan as his running mate is
as crass as it is cunning,” said National
Stonewall Democrats Executive Director
Jerame Davis in a released statement.
“Romney knows the Tea Party base of
the GOP still doesn’t trust him or believe
in his conservative credentials; his choice
considered abysmal by LGBT rights
organizations. He voted against hate
crimes legislation twice, opposed the
repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” supports
a federal constitutional amendment to
ban same-sex marriage and voted to
deny gays and lesbians the right to adopt
children in Washington, D.C.
The Ryan budget proposal that Mitt Romney has all
but adopted as his own would be one of the largest
transfers of wealth upward in history...
of Ryan is nothing more than a craven
attempt to shore up his base.”
Ryan’s record on LGBT issues is
“Ryan’s opposition to civil rights for
LGBT people certainly matches Mitt
Romney’s, but unlike Romney’s gutless
pandering to the religious right, Ryan is
a true believer,” said Davis. “For LGBT
voters, there’s nothing in this pick but
more disappointment and disregard.”
Though Ryan brings relative youth and
excites the Republican base, he is said to
have little experience aside from being a
Washington politician beholden to
corporations and the wealthy.
The Ryan budget proposal that Mitt
Romney has all but adopted as his own
would be one of the largest transfers of
wealth upward in history, according to
NSD. It would gut Medicare and
Medicaid, reduce services across the
board for the poor and underserved, and
shift the tax burden onto the middle
class while giving huge tax cuts to
millionaires and billionaires.
“Given the opportunity to enact their
budget, the poor and middle class in
this country would be devastated in
order for Romney and Ryan to line the
pockets of their wealthy paymasters,”
said Davis. “Conservatives who believe
this budget is the prescription for what
ails our federal government should be
warned: under the Ryan budget plan,
you will almost certainly be paying
more for less.”

Freedom to Marry’s State
Campaigns Top $3 Million
W
ith its latest $500,000 pledge to match donations to the
campaign for marriage in Washington State, Freedom to
Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide, has met
its initial 2012 goal of raising and investing $3 million in three key
states where marriage is on the ballot in November.
+Y4HYR*OVÅH
)VHYK*LY[PÄLK7Z`JOPH[YPZ[
‹ Medications + Psychiatry
‹ Counseling + Psychotherapy
‹ Personalized Concierge Care
‹ Life Coaching
Freedom to Marry now intends to continue
working to raise more funds toward the
more than $10 million still needed by the
three campaigns.
Freedom to Marry’s latest investment will
match donations dollar for dollar until Aug.
31 and is aimed at bringing in an additional
$1 million for Washington United for
Marriage.
Through its Win More States Fund,
Freedom to Marry has been steadily raising
funds and channeling them strategically into
state campaigns. Meanwhile, Freedom to
Marry has also been deeply embedded in the
campaigns themselves, providing strategic
guidance and helping build the framework
for every aspect of the advocacy work in the
states.
The Win More States Fund, announced in
March, set an original goal of raising $3
million to invest in five battleground states
for the entire campaign season. This most
recent cash infusion meets that goal in
Maine, Minnesota, and Washington alone,
more than two months earlier than
originally projected.
“Early and strategic support shows that
our movement has evolved into a
sophisticated campaign equipped to win at
the ballot box in November,” said Evan
Wolfson, founder and President of Freedom
to Marry. “In an election season where
candidate campaigns and Super PACs are
snapping up television airtime, Freedom to
Marry is especially pleased to be able to
provide crucial early funding to support TV
buys and other ways of making the case for
the freedom to marry. We will continue to
raise dollars and channel them into
campaigns to ensure we get family stories in
front of the voters and make the most
personal and powerful case for why
marriage matters.”
Because of competition for airtime, costs to
reserve television are rising quickly. In the
Seattle market, prices have nearly doubled
over the last few months. In the market
covering Portland, Maine, they’ve increased
by about 30 percent.
The money raised has helped Freedom to
Marry fund:
• Airtime for campaign TV spots in Maine,
Minnesota and Washington in the face of
steep price increases.
• Deployment of effective public education
efforts, including television spots featuring
real families and personal stories in the
three states.
• State-of-the-art new media tools and
tactics to engage voters and advocates.
• Field campaigns in all three states to
support one-on-one conversations with voters
about the importance of the freedom to
marry for all committed couples.

Lodging options exist at Costanoa
including Lodge Rooms (39),
Cabins (12), Tent Bungalows (80) or
traditional camping.
Whichever you choose, they offer
the unique opportunity to
experience outdoor living in
comfortable, stylish surroundings.
The Lodge offers the amenities and
services of a hotel, even to guests
staying in the tent-bungalows,
which are furnished with fourposter beds, down comforters,
heated mattress pads and reading
lamps.
If you venture down for a
getaway, you will also find
Adirondack chairs outside your
“room,” which proved to be a great
place to enjoy a glass of wine with
cheese delivered promptly by room
service. Other complimentary
amenities include a large hot tub
with views of hills that roll out
toward the ocean (make sure you
request to be in the Cyprus Camp),
and “comfort stations:” shared
bathrooms with
heated floors,
indoor and
outdoor showers,
a dry sauna and
outdoor
fireplaces.
For the upscale
traveler, The Spa

facial services. For the more rustic,
schedule a horseback ride through
the adjoining protected lands, rent
a mountain bike for the day, or
take a walk down the mile-long
trail to the beach, where you can
explore the tidepools or just enjoy
the ocean air.
There is also an onsite full-service bar and restaurant,
a breakfast and barbeque hut and a general store with
both necessities and gourmet items for sale.
The tent-bungalow weekday rates are just a tick under
$100, while weekend rates are just a tick over that
amount. If you have more to spend and prefer
traditional accommodations, make a reservation to stay
in the lodge or an individual cabin.
Whatever you may decide, Costanoa is a wonderful
getaway, a great value and the perfect escape from the
heat of August.

Rainbow Festival Will Have
Serious Star Power!
T
his year’s sizzling summer is going to get even
hotter, thanks to the star-studded entertainment
lineup scheduled for this year’s Rainbow
Festival, with headliner Deborah Cox joined by Lisa
Lisa, Ultra Nate, Luciana, Erika Jayne, Jessica Sutta
and Raquella. Now that’s some star power!
Rainbow Festival will take place
at the intersection of K and 20th
Streets on Sunday, September 2,
and party all day long from 10 a.m.
till 6 p.m.
Rainbow Festival is not just
about entertainment though, and
there will also be plenty of

can’t we get this all yearlong – food
vendors. I mean, where does a guy
have to go to get a Teriyaki on a
Stick?
It is the entertainers that attracts
the crowds, though, and Deborah
Cox is sure to pack them in, ready
to dance in the streets to her latest
hits. A multi-platinum selling and a
multi-talented entertainer, Cox has
earned three Juno Awards,
conquered the R&B and pop charts,
including six top-20 Billboard R&B
singles, an impressive ten #1 hits
on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play
chart and the lead role in Elton
John and Tim Rice’s Broadway
musical, Aida. Cox will be
returning to Broadway in 2012
where she will portray the
legendary Josephine Baker in the
musical version of “Jekyll and
Hyde.”
There is another side to Cox, one
that is very important to her. She has
just recently become a spokesperson
for the Break the Silence Campaign
(BreakTheSilenceCampaign.org) that is
working to empower all of the future
sons and daughters of America with the
knowledge of the dangers of HIV
through education and help create a
‘No AIDS’ society.
The exact schedule has not been
set yet for when each entertainer will
take the spotlight on the main stage,
but it is guaranteed to be a great
show. Deborah is supposed to be on
the main stage at 12:30 p.m., so don’t
show up late. Many of the performers will

Chalk It Up to Sacramento!
D
ozens of local artists creating before your eyes, 30 live acts
playing music, and food trucks and fun galore. In other
words, the 22nd annual Chalk It Up! To Sacramento festival
is back to cap off summer in style this Labor Day Weekend.
Chalk It Up! returns to Fremont Park for Labor Day Weekend where local artists create amazing
works of art in chalk like this panel from 2008.
The sidewalk squares surrounding
Fremont Park in Midtown Sacramento will
again come to colorful life thanks to the hard
work of local artists with chalk in hand.
There were still squares remaining for
sponsors to claim as I wrote this, or you can
sign up as a volunteer or an artist.
Sponsoring a square helps keep this event
free to the public and raises grant money for
children’s art education. Some 30,000 people
will see the original chalk art and enjoy
three days of live performances provided
by the many musicians donating their
talents.
This year will also see the return of the
Kids Create-A-Zone, where children are led
through activities by local professional
artists. Persons 21 & over can enjoy the
beer garden, sitting in the shade with adult
beverages and a great view of the musical
acts on the nearby stage.

is happening in Sacramento: Bonnie Osborn,

Crawford who makes sure that each issue is
delivered to our many, many distribution
points, and Corey Egel, who proofreads every
word of each issue to help us avoid those typos
that drive readers crazy.
My primary job at the paper is advertising
and sponsorships, and I try my best to get
support from local and national businesses in
the form of advertising and marketing. That’s
how we pay the bills and that’s what enables
us to bring you each issue of Outword.
The last few years we have added some fun
to our daily lives with more and more events
brought to you by Outword Events, if you’re
Religious
not on the invite list just simply go to our
web site and sign up or send us your email
address to receive our E-blasts. This will not
only get you an electronic copy of each issue
delivered to your screen, it will inform you
of our upcoming events like Outword
Supper Clubs, Drag Queens on Ice, Depot
Happy Hours and Drag Queen Bingos
(which have raised and donated over
$50,000).
Also, the last few years we are proud to
have represented and been the marketing
agent for organizations like Sacramento
Pride, Sacramento PFLAG, NorCal AIDS
Cycle and many other local nonprofits.
So, raise a glass with me as we toast to
another great year!
And P.S., thanks Kate Moore for inspiring
me to do this all this time, I love you!

seem like strange cinematic bedfellows, but
they make a very entertaining couple in
director and co-writer Delpy’s 2 Days in New

gay community.
Western cultures’ condemnation of same-sex
love appears to have originated from JudeoChristian scriptures, but contemporary biblical
scholarship amends old interpretations, he
says.
“That’s why I wanted to tell a religion-based
suspense story about homophobia,” Hartman
says. “It addresses fear of all kinds, because in
passage after biblical passage, scripture tells
humans who are facing change, sickness,
alienation, death, and everything else: ‘fear not.’
It applies to homophobia, as well.”
Paul Hartman is a retired PBS/NPR station
executive with a passion for biblical history.
He is a Presbyterian elder, a lay preacher and a
Dead Sea Scrolls aficionado. Hartman, a father
and grandfather, confesses he is a lifelong
fear-fighter.

throughout the weekend.
New for this year’s Rainbow Festival are the
Leather Stage and Detour Alley, which promise
to bring a bit of Folsom Street to Midtown. DJ
D Stu from Florida will keep the alley hopping,
plus there will be flogging, rope bondage and
whipping demos, along with vendors and more
fetish fun. Detour Alley will be open from
noon to 5 p.m.
Be sure to check facebook.com/

additional information about the festival and
their planned events. See you Labor Day
Weekend!
There has never been another gospel
singer to rival the great Mahalia Jackson, a
grandchild of plantation slaves who became
one of the leading voices of the Civil Rights
movement.
Bernardine Mitchell will have big shoes to
fill when Mahalia A Gospel Musical opens
locally later this month. From all accounts,
the Helen Hayes Award-winning actresssinger is superb in the role.
Mahalia plays August 30 – September 23
at the Guild Theater in Oak Park. Visit www.

The Great American Trailer Park
Musical
If you missed it last summer, you have
another chance to see the white trash,
off-Broadway hit musical comedy that I like
to think of as an episode of Jerry Springer
set to music. Only it’s much funnier and
much more entertaining.
Take the denizens of a low-rent trailer
park, stir in one stripper on the run, then
add a wayward husband and you have the
recipe for The Great American Trailer Park
Musical, which is being performed under the
stars in Old Fair Oaks. Through September
9. Call 916-966-3683 or visit

cites these additional recent developments:
• The U.S. military joined 43 other countries
when it repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and
allowed openly-gay service members.
• Same-sex marriages are now legal in six
states and the District of Columbia. Three
other states — Washington, Maryland and
California — have same-sex marriage under
active consideration. Eleven more offer “civil
union”-type status for same-sex couples.
• A federal appeals court in Boston recently
struck down the Defense of Marriage Act
(which defines marriage as “one man, one
woman”), making consideration by the U.S.
Supreme Court almost certain. Two additional
Appeals Courts have also struck down the law.
• Dr. Robert Spitzer, one of the last
nationally-respected scholars whose studies
lent credence to “gay reparative” therapies,
recently offered a retraction and apology to the

Zoe Kazan stars in “Ruby Sparks.”
The Tower
If Ruby Sparks is still playing at this
theater (or anywhere else in town) as you
read this, go see it. Paul Dano (There Will Be
Blood) is terrific as a self-absorbed novelist
who gets in over his head when the dream
girl he imagines materializes in the flesh.
Zoe Kazan (who also wrote the charming
script) is lovely and heartbreaking as our
hero’s fantasy woman, who turns out to be
more complex and problematic after she
moves from the page to the real world.
Equal parts funny and bittersweet, Ruby
Sparks also stars Annette Bening, Antonio
Banderas, Elliott Gould and Steve Coogan.
The movie was directed by the same folks
who helmed Little Miss Sunshine.
