There are fewer creatures on Earth, in dreams or in imagination that
strike such an immediate picture into the minds of men than the mere
mention of the VAMPIRE.
Just the word summons up visions of dark and shadowy beasts who
watch and lurk from outside the uninvited window, waiting and hoping for
a chance to enter and capture the life essence of the soul that abides
innocently inside.
But where did the notion of the vampire originate?
Many ancient cultures recognize some manner of the tale of the vampire,
the mythical (?) undying hellion who feasts on blood to sustain its own life.
Some speculate that this is because many equate blood with life, and that is
likely the most accurate place to start. Previous eras have a lot of different
variations on the story, with some believing the very first scares involved
women who chased after children; a scary image in any culture.
There is some version of the vampire in the mythology of virtually every
ancient race, from Greek to Chinese. They are different in many ways, but
they all pretty much focus on a lifeless animated fiend who is after blood.
Of course, the most popular of the legends is from Romania, a type of
folk hero called Vlad the Impaler. The son of Vlad II Dracul and a protector of
the peasants and populace of Romania, Vlad was so named for the obvious
reputation of impaling his enemies. This brutal story was again spread as
folklore across Europe, and the legend of the vampire grew, reaching its peak
in the legendary book by Bram Stoker, Dracula, where many of the elements
that we still associate with vampires were first established.
Today, most people hear the name Dracula and first think of the dashing
and charismatic actor Bela Lugosi, who portrayed the Count in two films for
Universal in the thirties and forties. Lugosi’s version of Dracula is so popular,
even today if you ask a five year old for an impression of Drac, you will likely
get the child’s version of Lugosi’s Hungarian delivery and a line like, “I want
to bite your neck,” which, humorously, Lugosi never said.
But the cinematic vampire thread goes back even further than Universal’s
1931 classic to the silent film era, and a super spooky and unauthorized
rendition of the Stoker tale in German director F.W. Murnau’s superior film
Nosferatu: a Symphony of Horror.
Nosferatu is often pointed to as the birth of the modern horror film; an
eerie, slow building story of a vampire that uses shadows and light to build
tension and mood. The vampire Count Orlock was played by the terrifying and
strange Max Schreck. The word “Nosferatu” was substituted for “vampire”
because of a lawsuit by Stoker’s heirs; the court ordered all prints of the film
to be destroyed, but amazingly, a single print survived.
Today, Nosferatu is recognized as a masterpiece of early horror, and one
of the great influential pieces of the silent era. Max Schreck’s visage still
startles today, appearing regularly every Halloween via masks and costumes.
A movie made in 2000 called Shadow of the Vampire is based on the notion
that Schreck himself was a real life vampire. The Nosferatu character also
famously appears in a humorous manner at the end of a memorable episode
of the kids show Spongebob Squarepants.
The popularity of vampires has remained pretty consistent over
the years, with characters in books and films by acclaimed writers and
filmmakers. Authors as varied as Stephen King (Salem’s Lot) and Anne Rice
(Interview with a Vampire) have based works on the
bloodthirsty undead with great success.
Most recently, the Twilight

series of books and movies were a phenomenon, of course, to the
delight of some and the dismay of others. The other notable classic
monster role of Dracula is by the actor Christopher Lee, who played
his version in several iconic Hammer movies from the late fifties to
the mid-seventies.
Most interpretations of vampires have similar myths surrounding the
best ways to deal with them, including a stake to the heart, the most
popularly circulated way to dispose of a vampire. Other legendary ways to
repel them include garlic, crosses, silver and holy water, and a celebrated
piece of the vampire legend is their inability to be seen in a mirror.
Many of these stories include the vampire’s ability to fly, “hypnotize”
victims against their will and change back and forth to a bat, among
other distinctions.
Vampires have long been a staple of the Halloween season,
whether it be in the form of movies, imagery or costumes. As a
costume, it is always one of the most popular (and often easiest)
to wear out trick or treating into the chilling Halloween night or to a
Halloween party. One element that continually makes it an interesting
costume is that of all the Universal Monsters, it is maybe the only
creature who actually likes to be a monster. Where the Frankenstein’s
Monster is a reluctant villain, Dracula actively seeks out his prey and
seems to generally feel no remorse about doing so.
Female vampires are also a prominent costume in Halloween
stores and on Halloween night every fall, with icons such as Dracula’s
Daughter and the comic book character Vampirella as ever present
examples of the vampire mystique.
A good number of Halloween haunts, both amateur and professional,
feature versions of vampires, with sharp fangs and fake blood serving
as the main calling card. Pretty much any other makeup or clothing can
be built around the fangs, since everyone has their own idea of what a
vampire should be.
Halloween imagery, whether it’s in the form of Disney cartoons,
home décor or commercial use in ads or on candy wrappers almost always
feature some type of vampire, most of which are based on the general
likeness of Lugosi’s Dracula. Interestingly, the widow’s peak hair and
long cape are usually also a part of the look.
The vampire as a representative of our favorite dark holiday
is not likely to change anytime soon. The vampire rises from
its tomb every All Hallows’ Eve season, lurking out in the
misty night under the radiant light of the
harvest moon and
assuring its place
among the most
immortal of all
the Halloween
icons.

15. EREBUS - PG 20 & 21
SPONSORED BY: Pepsi & Don’t Be A Monster
Anti-Bullying Campaign
News reports speculate that there is far more going on inside
Erebus than meets the eye. The rumor is, in an attempt to
cure diseases and prevent major disasters, scientists created
a time machine. When the first humans were sent through the
time machine, they disappeared. Rescue teams were formed to
search and recover their remains. Every team was confronted
by creatures and situations yielding fatal results. It seemed as if
that segment of time was trying to eliminate them like a virus,
knowing they did not belong there. Secretly, more and more
people were sent into the machine. A staff that was once over
200 is now only a handful, but just enough to keep the project
running. Advertisements have gone out to disguise it as a Haunted
Attraction to mislead the public, to get them to enter the time
machine “Erebus” and keep the experiment going.
