short while, when the DJ
announced that someone
wanted to know where the
SEGTOA meeting was to be
held. We found that Bill White,
who had been a member for
years, but had never been
able to attend a meeting, was
trying to find us. As it turned
out, we had finally brought the
meeting to him.
There were a number of VERY
NICE GTO’s at the show. A ’69
GTO won one of the top 25
trophies, Mike Walling’s ’67
GTO won a trophy, and a ’65
GTO won the “Best of GM”
trophy. A good day for GTOs!
Dallas Petrey was seen
roaming around without even
one of his GTOs. Other awards
included best motorcycle, best
import, and best of each
manufacturer. Kenny
Simpson had his great Firebird
at the show.

1970 Ram Air IV GTO Restoration
(How My Tune-Up and Brake Job Turned
Into a 5-Year Frame-Off Restoration)

Drivetrain Restoration
I returned from my 15-month
Iraq deployment in February,
2008. I moved from Texas
to northern Virginia in April
or so, and that’s when I
picked up the GTO in
Indiana. The condition was
as expected; I had seen
dozens of pictures of the car,
and had it inspected by an
acquaintance who was wellversed in GTOs, so there
were no surprises. I trailered
the car home from Indiana
and it went straight into the
garage at the house I was
renting in Woodbridge, VA.
I drove the GTO sparingly
after I arrived in Virginia;
mostly because it was not
running great and the brakes
were iffy. I finally cleared
off a weekend to tune up the
engine and rebuild the brakes and that’s when it
happened - - the more work I did, the more I realized
that the car needed and deserved better than just a set
of spark plugs and new wheel cylinders, pads, and
shoes. The next thing I knew, I had the engine and
transmission out, the interior completely out of the
car, and the body off the frame. Initially I planned to
do the frame-off restoration myself, but other
projects were taking up my time, so I eventually took
it to Darrell Davidson at Supercar Creations in
Norton, Ohio. Darrell and I had done business in the
past, and I had been to his shop and saw that he had
completed some extremely nice cars. Darrell is also
a hardcore Pontiac guy, and specializes in 68-72
GTOs - - he recently restored his 1969 Judge and it
was awarded the Concours Gold pedigree by the
GTOAA. Darrell also owns a 1969 RAIV Judge and
a 1971 455 HO Judge. Speaking of Judges, Darrell
also judges GTOs for the GTOAA, so he’s certainly
familiar with these cars.
Moving on to the drivetrain,
the engine in the GTO
when I bought it was a

were missing. However,
while I was still in Iraq, I
had located a 1970 GTO

for these items and picked them up shortly after I
returned in February.

And now for the rest of the story, the 389 was brought back to life, and the mundane things that needed to
be done from all of those years of sitting were complete. She was ready to roll.
We have driven it over 33,000 miles since we bought it. I call it our economy car because it is a real
highway cruiser and consistently gets over 20 MPG on the highway. (I wish I could say that about the 71.)
The 71 was shipped to our home in Woodbine, GA in Dec. 2012. We haven’t driven it much since we’ve
been here. There is so much to do in a new home. The ‘59 remains in cold hibernation in Connecticut. It
will join us someday in the warm and friendly south.
E15—A Response from Senator Saxby Chambliss
The problems associated with E15 fuel must really be a hot topic lately. Articles have
appeared in Hagerty, Hemmings, AAA, various enthusiast magazanies and was even
spotlighted in Tiger Tales last month.
Recently, Oldsmobile club member Linda Brewster took the time to contact Senator Saxby
Chambliss regarding the ethanol content in gasoline. Below is the response she received:
Dear Mrs. Brewster:
Thank you for contacting me regarding blends of ethanol in gasoline. Your taking time to
write me is appreciated.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had capped the ethanol content in gasoline for
all uses at 10% (E10). However, in October 2010, EPA issued a partial waiver for the use
of 15% ethanol in gasoline (E15) in model year (MY) 2007 and later passenger cars and
light trucks. On January 21, 2011, EPA expanded the partial waiver for E15 use to include
MY 2001-2006 light-duty vehicles.
Taken together, the two waivers allow, but do not require, E15 to be introduced into use in
MY2001 and newer light-duty vehicles if conditions for mitigating misfueling and ensuring
fuel quality are met. EPA is in the process of completing work on regulations that would
provide a more practical means of meeting the conditions.
On February 14, 2013, Senator Wicker of Mississippi introduced S. 344, which was
subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. As it is
written, this bill would prohibit the EPA Administrator from approving the introduction of
gasoline containing more than 10 percent ethanol blend. Currently, no action has been
taken on S. 344; however, should this issue come before the Senate for debate, I will
keep your thoughts in mind.
I understand your concerns with the effects that increasing the ethanol blend level beyond
the current 10 percent threshold may have on engines that rely on these fuels, and I
remain committed to ensuring ethanol blends do not compromise the safety and
performance of these engines. In the past, I have opposed efforts to increase the blend
level due to concerns about its effects on engine warranties and safety issues. However, as
our continuing dependence on foreign oil threatens our national security, I believe that all
domestic sources of energy should be considered.

bumper (worth over $1000 alone), doors with
power windows, hood, trunk, complete interior,

Green/Green - all original, used parts (nothing new
or NOS). Also have nice 1970 Lemans Sport body
with original seats (recovered), dash pad with
instruments, and much of interior, very nice body

excellent condition and the floor, trunk and all
metal are rust free (only surface rust from weather,
and I do know the difference) there is NO rust
through and this is a VERY nice and solid body with

“My Mother the Car”
“Mother” was created by George Barris (of Batmobile fame) to
represent a 1928 Porter. Jerry turned down roles to play
Gilligan on Gilligan’s Island and to replace Don Knotts as
Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. Jerry later found t.v.
success as Luther Van Dam on the series Coach winning four
consective Emmy Award nominations.
