Ottawa
W
elcome to Ottawa, a city
that blends urban sophistication, natural beauty, and
joie de vivre.
As Canada’s capital, Ottawa offers visitors
a rich cultural experience. It’s home to seven
national museums, which means you can stand
beside totem poles at the Canadian Museum
of History, explore World War II tanks at the
Canadian War Museum, and be awed by the
gargantuan size of a blue whale at the Canadian
Museum of Nature — all in the same day.
The art here is first class, too: the National
Gallery of Canada has the world’s largest collection of Canadian art, which includes Group of
Seven masterpieces and new acquisitions from
emerging artists. Meanwhile, at the National Arts
Centre, top performing artists bring dance, music,
and theatre to life in both English and French.
From Little Italy and Chinatown to the historic ByWard Market district, Ottawa is a treasure
trove of neighbourhoods, each with its own thriving culinary scene and unique shops. Hip cafés,
bistros, and four-diamond restaurants helmed by
chefs trained at the world-renowned
Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa Culinary Arts Institute
will delight foodies, while world class shopping
centres and scores of local boutiques offer a rich
shopping experience.
Ottawa’s many greenspaces make it easy to get
away from the hustle and bustle. Take a walk in
the Arboretum, a green oasis that contains 2,400
varieties of trees and shrubs, or head to nearby
Gatineau Park, where a network of trails offers
something for the ambitious hiker, the keen
naturalist, or the family looking for a romp in the
woods. Plus, discover Prescott-Russell, a rural
gem that lies just east of the city.
On those hot summer days, cool off on
Calypso Theme Waterpark’s dozens of waterslides, or retreat to the shaded barns of the
Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, located
in the centre of the city.
Year round, Ottawa is a destination like no
other. Come see for yourself what makes Canada’s
capital an extraordinary experience.

Culture
On Display
Architecturally stunning buildings, a treasure-trove of art and artifacts, a canal
that winds past spectacular parks and gardens — this is Ottawa, a city that
connects visitors to people and places steeped in Canadian heritage, and
which celebrates culture and innovation like nowhere else. Travel back in time
at historic sites, gaze at artistic masterpieces, or discover what lies on,
above, and below the earth.
History & Heritage
Carillon bells ringing from the
Peace Tower beckon visitors
to Parliament Hill, Canada’s
centre of government. The
neo-Gothic buildings that
overlook the Ottawa River
are home to the House of
Commons, the Senate, the
Library of Parliament, and
the Peace Tower — the latter,
which is nearly 100 metres
tall, offers visitors breathtaking
views of the city. In summer
12
months, once it gets dark, be
dazzled by the Sound and
Light Show, which projects
images and video onto Centre
Block buildings to tell the story
of Canada and its people.
Did you know that Canada
is a constitutional monarchy?
The Queen’s representative,
the Governor General, lives
in the Official Residence
Rideau Hall, which houses a
magnificent collection of art
and furniture. After your tour,

make sure to stroll through the
beautiful grounds.
Winding its way through the
heart of the city is the Rideau
Canal, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site and a National
Historic Site of Canada. Opened
in 1832 as a precautionary
measure in case of war with
the United States, the 202-km
(126-mile) waterway stretches
from Kingston to Ottawa,
connecting Lake Ontario with
the Ottawa River. A destination
most comprehensive collection
of Canadian art in existence.
Famous works include pieces
by the Group of Seven,
Canada’s iconic painters, along
with impressive photography,
Inuit art, and contemporary
American art collections.
Creepy-crawlies, bedazzling
gemstones, life-sized dinosaurs,
and a nearly 20-metre long
skeleton of a blue whale can
all be found inside a castlelike museum. The Canadian
Museum of Nature is a
wonderland of discovery,
where people of all ages can
explore Canada’s remarkable
biodiversity and geography.
Designed to resemble a
wartime bunker, the Canadian
War Museum is dotted with
small, square windows, which
are arranged in a Morse Code
sequence that reads “Lest
We Forget” — the phrase
associated with Canada’s
Remembrance Day honouring
fallen soldiers. The unique and
highly symbolic architecture of
this building sets the stage for a
vast collection of war artifacts,
including a fighter jet, artillery,
tanks — even Hitler’s 1940
Daimler-Benz limousine.

for boaters, canoeists, and
kayakers, it’s also Ottawa’s yearround playground. Paddleboats,
kayaks, and canoes can be rented
at Dows Lake, and there are
long, recreational pathways on
both sides of the canal ideal for
biking, walking, and jogging.
In the winter, the Rideau Canal
is transformed into the world’s
largest skating rink, stretching
7.8 km (4.8 miles).

First Nation houses situated
beside a Pacific coastline, the
Canadian Museum of History’s
Grand Hall is aptly named.
The spacious, sunlit room with
its collection of silent sentinels
provides an awesome setting
for the museum’s collection of
artifacts that illustrate Canada’s
history from its first inhabitants
to the present. While you are
there take time to grab your
passport and tour the world
in the Canadian Children’s
Museum. A maze-like Egyptian
pyramid, dress-up theatre, and
barge with a crane to load and
unload cargo are just a few of
the activities designed to delight
young children.

Head east from downtown,
past Rideau Hall and the
Prime Minister’s residence,
along Ottawa’s scenic GeorgeÉtienne Cartier Parkway
(formerly Rockcliffe Parkway),
and you’ll find a place which
fuels the imagination. Fly away
inside the museum’s Redbird
FMX Flight Simulator, sit
inside the cockpit of an F-16
fighter jet, or learn about the
history of flight among the
museum’s collection of civilian
and military aircraft. For the
adventurous, book a ride in
either a vintage open cockpit
aircraft or a helicopter — it’s
also a great way to mark a
special occasion.
Deep within the earth,
concealed underneath a hill
and secluded from spying eyes
is a Cold War command and
control centre. Secretly built
between 1959 and 1961, the
Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold
War Museum was constructed
to shelter Canada’s leaders
in case of a nuclear attack,
including Prime Minister John
Diefenbaker for whom the
museum is named. With four
floors of Cold War relics to see
and rooms still as they were,
the Diefenbunker is a oneof-a-kind experience — well
worth the short drive to the
town of Carp.
From fine dining to world-class museums to exciting
outdoor adventures, the Ontario and Canadian
Signature Experiences programs showcase

Ottawa’s shopping and dining scenes have undergone some major
transformations in the past few years, from renovations at the Rideau Centre,
the city’s massive downtown shopping centre, to exciting new restaurants
and storefronts opening their doors across Ottawa’s neighbourhoods. As you
wander the city’s streets, stop in to browse through boutiques or have a meal
at one of the many delectable eateries. These pages highlight just a few of the
great stops you can expect when visiting Ottawa’s neighbourhoods.

is where Ottawa began. In the early 1800s, it was home to
Irish and French-Canadian labourers who worked on the
Rideau Canal — and it was here that the foundations were
laid for what has since become Canada’s oldest operating
farmers’ market. Now, it’s a thriving district where you’ll find
fresh produce and an exciting mix of fashion, nightlife, fine
dining, and gourmet shops all year long.

Helmed by Chef René Rodriguez, who was named Top

delicious fare on Rodriguez’s Mexican heritage and his

a charming, cozy space that serves up fresh local
ingredients to produce its rustic yet contemporary
menu. Across the street from the Rideau Centre,

of historic interest, opportunities to get active outdoors, and agricultural
markets and festivals.
Home to a multitude of farms,
food producers, breweries,
and wineries, Prescott-Russell
is the perfect place to treat
your tastebuds. It’s home to
the famous St. Albert Cheese
company, Beau’s All-Natural
Brewing Company, and
the Vankleek Hill Farmers’
Market. Its festivals, too, are
many: from Vankleek Hill’s
Festival of Flavours to St.
Albert’s Curd Festival, there’s
something to appeal to every
palate.
Sites of historical interest
and cultural centres abound
36
here. Some of the region’s
oldest buildings, including
L’Orignal Old Jail and the
Macdonell-Williamson House,
tell the story of Ontario’s
earliest settlers, while the work
of local artists is promoted
in places such as Le Chenail
Cultural Centre. It’s also a
great place to spend time with
the family: Calypso Theme
Waterpark, featuring slides and
other attractions, is the largest
of its kind in Canada.
And when you want to get
active, there’s no better place to
immerse yourself in the great

outdoors. The rural nature of
Prescott-Russell means there
are dozens of trails, walking
paths, and campsites where
visitors can get a little closer to
Mother Nature. Cycle on the
Prescott-Russell Recreational
Trail, go fishing on the South
Nation River, or hike in Larose
Forest. And Eastern Ontario
has always been reputed as a
golfer’s paradise — in PrescottRussell, golfers will find over
100 courses within a few
minutes’ drive from downtown
Ottawa, with enough variety to
meet any player’s needs.
Agrifood and Agritourism
Eating is often an essential part of the travel experience
— good thing, then, that Prescott-Russell’s farmers,
brewers, and vintners do food so well. St. Albert
Cheese, produced in its namesake town, has been
a staple in eastern Ontario since the turn of the 20th
century, and the co-op is famous for its line of awardwinning cheddar cheeses.
Vankleek Hill, just an hour east of downtown Ottawa,
produces more than its fair share of gourmet goods.
The family-run Beau’s All-Natural Brewing Company, which has been in operation for a little under
a decade, produces a line of unique craft beers, including the popular Lug Tread, a beverage modeled after
the German Kölsch. The brew can also be found in
most liquor stores and pubs across the province. The
Vankleek Hill Vineyard is a family-owned boutique
winery that produces both red and white wines. And
the region’s farmers, bakers, butchers, and more come
together every week at the Vankleek Hill Farmers’
Market to sell their fresh products.
The region’s love for all things agricultural comes
together at its many festivals and fairs. The Vankleek
Hill Festival of Flavours, an event for foodies that’s
held every autumn, highlights cuisine by local and
international chefs, while the Eastern OntarioOutaouais Gourmet Festival brings communities
together in the love of everything culinary!
St. Albert’s Curd Festival in August is a lively
celebration of eastern Ontario cheese, and features live
performances, cooking demonstrations, activities for
kids, and — of course — tons of fresh curds.
Dust off your Bavarian hat for Beau’s Oktoberfest,
where beer and traditional German songs are king.
There are also games such as sausage-eating
contests, as well as live performances by popular
Canadian bands.
Agricultural exhibitions abound in Prescott-Russell.
The century-old Vankleek Hill Agricultural Fair, the
Russell Fair, and the Riceville Agricultural Fair are
popular events, where cattle shows and petting zoos
take place alongside live entertainment, midways and
food tasting activities.

Culture/Heritage and Family
Prescott-Russell’s history is rich with contributions by
francophone and anglophone settlers, and it’s a heritage
that still thrives today. The Macdonell-Williamson
House in Chûte-à-Blondeau was built by John Macdonell,
a fur trader, in the early 19th century, and remains a
stunning example of Georgian architecture in eastern
Ontario.
Take a tour of L’Orignal Old Jail and get a glimpse of
law and order in the 19th century. The prison was built
in the 1820s and remained the oldest operating jail in
Ontario until it closed its doors in 1998. It now operates
as a museum, displaying artifacts from the prison and
surrounding village.
Sienna Gallery exhibits paintings, ceramic work, and
jewellery by artists from across the region.
The people of Prescott-Russell are fun-loving folk, and
this is reflected in the festivals that take place throughout the year. Get your dancing shoes on at the Alfred
Country-Western Festival or the Wendover Western
Festival, where the region’s rural heritage is celebrated
with country music, free tours, and more.
The Ottawa River was hugely influential in the development of the region. The Ottawa River Festival honours
this legacy with attractions such as nautical activities,
live music, and carnival rides.
Built by an Irish immigrant in 1830, bright blue Higginson Tower in Vankleek Hill functioned first as a
windmill to power local industry, then as the area’s first
private observatory. And while you’re in Vankleek Hill,
don’t forget to walk through its streets and take in the
red-bricked Victorian architecture that has made it the
“Gingerbread Capital of Ontario.”
And if you’re in search of something to do with the family for the weekend, Prescott-Russell has you covered.
Over 35 water slides, a wave pool, and dozens of games
and obstacle courses will keep the kids swimming and
splashing for hours at Calypso Theme Waterpark, a
40-minute drive east of downtown Ottawa. But if you’d
rather stay dry, Oasis Mini Golf and Driving Range is
located just down the street from Calypso, with an 18hole course that provides a challenge for every skill level.
With such scenic surroundings to inspire, it’s no surprise
that Prescott-Russell is home to many artists. Hawkesbury’s Le Chenail Cultural Centre, housed in the payroll
office of what was once the largest sawmill in Ontario, and
Embrun’s La Maison des Arts continuously encourage,
promote, and display local arts and culture. Rockland’s
Lock and load! Embrun’s Carnage Paintball, 35 minutes
from Ottawa, will appeal to teens and adults with a
handful of tactical assault zones — whether you monitor
your opponents from the tower or take a slow, stealthy
route through a field full of bunkers, your options are
unlimited in the quest to dominate the game.

Outdoors and Golf
Characterized by rolling fields, dense forests, and
flowing waterways, there is no end of outdoor
adventures to be had in Prescott-Russell. Hop on your
bicycle and hit the Prescott-Russell Recreational
Trail, a 72-kilometre path that crosses through
marshland, forests, and farmland, so keep your eyes
peeled for wildlife!
If you’d rather cycle along the water’s edge, country
roads on the Ottawa River offer stunning views of the
Laurentian Mountains on the Quebec side. Grab a copy
of the Prescott-Russell Cycling Map for details on the
river’s proposed cycling routes.
Explore the region on foot at Larose Forest, one of
the largest man-made forests in North America. Its
network of trails can be accessed year-round — so
lace up your boots or slip on your snowshoes! The
7.2-kilometre (4-mile) New York Central Fitness
Trail, once the site of a railroad between Ottawa and
New York, links the villages of Russell and Embrun,
and can be used for both hiking and cycling.
Both the Ottawa River and South Nation River are
ideal spots to get your fishing line out and catch
some muskellunge (or maskinongé, as the locals call
it). First-time fishers can head over to Smithsight
Fishing Farm in L’Orignal for lessons!
Prescott-Russell has long been known for its quality
golf courses. Casselman’s Casselview Golf and
Country Club offers 18 diverse and challenging
holes on a beautifully manicured green. Hedged by
thickets of trees, the course at Hawkesbury Golf
& Curling will challenge seasoned golfers, but also
provide beginners with a gentle introduction to the
sport. A championship experience awaits you at
Outaouais Golf Club in Rockland, just a half hour
drive east of downtown Ottawa. Here, the sloping
greens offer 27 challenging holes — plus, a fully
stocked pro shop that will get you equipped for the
game, and a bar and dining area where you can relax
after the day is done.

ARRIVING IN OTTAWA
By Car
Several routes lead to Ottawa: Highways
174 and 417 from the east, Highways 416,
16, and 31 from the south, Highway 7 from
the west, and Highway 17 from the northwest, as well as Highway 148 (Québec)
from the northeast and northwest.
By Air
The Ottawa International Airport (code
YOW, 613-248-2000, www.yow.ca),
located approximately 16 km (10 miles)
south of the city centre and accessible via
the Airport Parkway, is the main point of
landing for most domestic and international flights. Assistance to travellers is
available at airport Infoguide kiosks (arrivals: 613-248-2125; departures: 613248-2141). Taxi service is available (dispatch: 613-523-1234). An average oneway trip to the downtown core costs
approximately $30. Several major international companies also offer automobile
rentals from the Ottawa Airport parkade:
Avis, 613-739-3334; Budget, 613-5214844; Enterprise, 613-248-0005; Hertz,
613-521-3332; National/Alamo, 613737-7023. To save on transportation
costs, take OC Transpo, Ottawa’s public
transit system. Route 97 offers low-floor,
fully accessible buses departing from outside the airport’s level 1 arrivals area for
downtown Ottawa (613-741-6440;
www.octranspo.com).
By Train
Daily passenger service to the Ottawa
region from cities such as Toronto and
Montréal is provided by VIA Rail (1-888842-7245; www.viarail.com). The main
train station is located 4 km (2.5 miles)
southeast of downtown at 200 Tremblay
Road, off Highway 417. A second station–
Fallowfield–is located west of downtown.
Service for OC Transpo, the local public
transit company, is a step away from both
terminals. Taxi service is readily available
and limousine service may be booked.
By Bus
The Ottawa region is serviced by Voyageur
Colonial Bus Lines and Greyhound Canada
Transportation Corp. (www.greyhound.ca)
from bus stations at 265 Catherine
Street in Ottawa (613-238-5900) and
238 St-Joseph Boulevard in Gatineau
(819-771-2442). There is hourly service
from Montréal, several daily runs from
Toronto (including express service), and
daily service to many other destinations.
GETTING AROUND
Public Transit
There are two city bus systems in Canada’s
Capital Region. OC Transpo (613-741-4390,
www.octranspo.com) operates on the
Ontario side of the Ottawa River and the
Société de Transport de l’Outaouais
(819-770-3242, www.sto.ca) operates
on the Québec side. You can transfer
between these systems along Rideau
and Wellington Streets in Ottawa and
around the Portage Bridge and at the
Place d’accueil on Maisonneuve Boulevard in Gatineau. Both agencies offer
convenient trip planning tools on their
websites.
By Taxi
Visitors can choose from many cab
companies in Ottawa.

By Bike
One of the best ways to tour the city is
by bike. Canada’s Capital Region is home
to more than 180 km of recreational
pathways linking the city’s green spaces,
attractions, residential areas, and more.
One of the city’s most popular rental
outfits is RentABike (613-241-4140,
www.rentabike.ca), located at
2 Rideau Street across from the Fairmont
Château Laurier.
By Boat

THE
Evolving City
IN 2017, CANADA TURNS
150 YEARS OLD, AND
CANADA’S CAPITAL IS
PREPARING TO CELEBRATE
THE OCCASION IN STYLE.
Nowhere is this more apparent
than at Lansdowne. Established
in 1868, this historic space
alongside the Rideau Canal
once teemed with agricultural
fairs and was home turf for the
Ottawa Rough Riders, the
Canadian Football League
(CFL) franchise. Fast forward to
today, and a major revitalization
has set the stage for sporting
events and concerts at TD
Place. This state-of-the-art,
open air stadium is home to
the Ottawa REDBLACKS,
Canada’s
newest CFL team, as well as
the Ottawa Fury FC, Ottawa’s
soccer team and member of
the North American Soccer
League, and the Ottawa 67’s,
the capital’s Ontario Hockey
League team. Shopping shares
the spotlight here with popular
retailers such as Whole Foods,
Sporting Life and Winners
welcoming visitors.
Calling all shoppers! Ottawa’s
biggest shopping centres have
been undergoing major expansions. Rideau Centre, just one
block east of Parliament Hill,
now boasts sleek quartz flooring

and tiles imported from Verona,
Italy. Its transformation has
attracted some of the biggest
names in fashion including
Nordstrom and Kiehl’s. And
there’s more to come like Kate
Spade, and Tiffany & Co. due
to open in summer 2015.
And in the west end,
Bayshore Shopping Centre
has introduced exciting stores
such as Express and H&M to
the capital. And with the arrival
of Tanger Outlets, a prominent
outlet mall chain bringing with
it Coach, Calvin Klein, and
Mountain Warehouse, Ottawa
is truly an exciting shopping
destination.
