REMARKS FROM THE CHAIRMAN
A Strong First Act
You could call the IUGB Foundation’s performance thus far the first act of a
long-running play…a play whose stars are the students of the International
University of Grand-Bassam (IUGB) and whose plot involves the education of
these students and their role in building a better Africa.
A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in December 2013, the
Foundation is already making a real difference as evidenced by IUGB’s
increasing enrollment, its successful graduates and the support being
received from both corporate and individual supporters. The latter made
it possible for the Foundation to grant its first scholarships to students
attending IUGB this Fall.
In this our first Progress Report you will read about some of the activities that
have positioned the Foundation to grow, including the establishment of a board
of directors to provide sound leadership and governance. You will also see
profiles of our students, graduates and IUGB’s distinguished faculty.

Excelling at Home and Abroad

My interest in quantitative subjects has helped
me build upon a strong, early academic
foundation of mathematics and science.
I received a high school diploma in 2009 in
the Ivory Coast where I was recognized for
achievement by the country’s Education
Minister. Afterward, I entered the International
University of Grand-Bassam and started my
pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics
with a concentration in actuarial science. Two
years later I transferred to Georgia State
University, graduating with a Master’s of
Actuarial Science and a Master of Science in
Mathematical Risk Management. In June
2015 I began my professional career as a Risk
Management Analyst at the U.S. Federal Home
Loan Bank in Atlanta.
One of my ultimate goals is to participate in
the development of my country, Côte d’Ivoire,
through my professional and scholarly
experience in the United States.
My extracurricular activities included serving as
the President of the International University of
Grand-Bassam (IUGB) Alumni & Friends
Network Alumni Association (Atlanta Chapter).

In high school, I always wanted to study
finance and become a banker. So when I
heard about IUGB and that it offered
classes in English, I thought this would
provide me with an ideal opportunity to
achieve my career aspirations. Attending
IUGB affected my life by broadening my
perspective of my own life and creating
the opportunity to take my first flight to the
United States. As an English-language
institution, IUGB also prepared me to speak
English and use my language capability to
make a real difference in the workforce.
After graduation, I was accepted for a credit
analyst position at the top-rated bank in Côte
d’Ivoire. I am now planning to obtain a
graduate degree in management and
entrepreneurship and to become a Certified
Financial Accountant (CFA).
I had not focused on how much of an
impact IUGB had on my life until I wrote this
testimony. IUGB prepared me to gain a great
position in the profession of my dreams. I
am sure the education obtained from IUGB
will provide me many more opportunities
throughout my career.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S UPDATE...
Building Momentum for the Future
Approximately two years ago, the IUGB Foundation was nothing more than a
vision of a few individuals who saw West Africa’s future tied to its ability to
provide higher education opportunities for talented students throughout the
region.
Today that vision is gaining momentum, thanks to a variety of events that have
created awareness and enthusiasm for the IUGB Foundation and its efforts to
educate global leaders of tomorrow. Among those activities was an
Inaugural Celebration in Atlanta that attracted such dignitaries as Ambassador
Andrew Young, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, and representatives from Côte
d’Ivoire, including Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan. Also in attendance were
local business leaders and students from IUGB.
We are pleased with how far we’ve come in such a short time, and we’re excited
about our future. We know that the key to our success rests with the individuals
and organizations who understand our mission and are willing to help IUGB
students realize their hopes for obtaining a college education.

The IUGB community sincerely appreciates the good work and
significant accomplishments of the IUGB Foundation.

CELEBRATING THE LAUNCH
Inaugural Celebration
On October 8, 2014 the IUGB Foundation held its Inaugural Celebration at the Intercontinental
Hotel in the Buckhead community of Atlanta.
Featuring a reception, dinner and presentations, the event was attended by more than 250
representatives from business, government and the local community.
Several Ivorians attended, including Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan and the President of
the International University of Grand-Bassam (IUGB), Professor Saliou Touré.
The event created awareness for the IUGB Foundation but more importantly, the funds raised
are enabling the Foundation to award the first scholarships in the Fall of 2015!

Le Conseil du Café Cacao
I am a senior trader for Le Conseil du
Café Cacao, the regulatory board for
the cocoa and coffee industry in Côte
d’Ivoire, the world’s largest producer of
cocoa. Previously I held positions as
Partner and Director for Business
Development at E&E Global Consulting,
Inc. (EEGC), a commodity trading
boutique located in Arlington, Virginia
and as an Algorithmic Trader at SMB
Capital, a proprietary trading firm based
on Wall Street.
After completing 2 years of study at
IUGB, I transferred to Georgia State
University where I obtained a Bachelor
of Science in Mathematics and
Actuarial Science with honors, and a
minor in Finance. I co-founded and
serve as President of Africa 5 Etoiles, a
non-governmental organization based
in Côte d’Ivoire that supports students
in need of financial assistance.
I wouldn’t have been able to
accomplish all that I have without the
spirit of leadership, excellence and
entrepreneurship instilled in me by
IUGB.

high-quality university that would benefit

The International University of Grand-Bassam’s
first graduation ceremony was a national,
historic event for Côte d’Ivoire with
far-reaching implications for national and
regional development.
Moreover, in reaching this milestone, IUGB is
poised to graduate a continually increasing
stream of well-qualified individuals to lead the
economic transformation of Côte d’Ivoire and
the West Africa region.
Côte d’Ivoire’s Prime Minister and former
Chairman of the Board of IUGB, his Excellency
Daniel Kablan Duncan, delivered the
commencement address.

To prepare myself for college, I went
to Ghana for English language
training. Afterwards, I considered
several different universities, but after
careful consideration selected the
International University of
Grand-Bassam.
Upon enrolling in IUGB, I found the
facilities, residences, classrooms and
libraries very conducive to learning.
As an American-style university, IUGB
emphasizes values, accountability
and excellence.
Students are also encouraged to
speak only English outside the
classroom to help them to quickly
become proficient in the language.
Students also are guided by qualified
professors from the United States,
Asia, Europe, Côte d’Ivoire and other
African countries.
I feel confident in the quality of
education I am receiving at IUGB.
After completing my Bachelor Degree
in Administration, I intend to work in
Côte d’Ivoire for about two years and
eventually pursue a master’s degree.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Meet Two of Our World-Class Professors
DR. LINWA BAYOMOCK
DR. NERISA N. PALADAN
An expert in computer science, Dr. Bayomock
joined IUGB in August of 2013 and teaches
undergraduate courses including: network
engineering, mobile applications, software
engineering, database, business intelligence
and advanced programming languages.
Dr. Paladan received her Doctorate in
Business Administration from Ateneo d’Naga
University in the Philippines.
Dr. Bayomock is a 2005 PhD graduate in
computer engineering from Ecole
Polytechnique in Montreal, Canada and taught
at that school for five years as a visiting
faculty member. He also has acted as a
software consultant/expert for various
Canadian industries, including banking,
government, insurance, telecommunications,
manufacturing and healthcare.
Formerly, she was Assistant Professor at
Gyeongju University, South Korea and
Associate Professor at Ateneo d’Naga in the
Philippines. She came to IUGB in September
2014 and teaches in the School of Business
and Social Sciences.
Dr. Paladan worked in various industries for
almost five years prior to her involvement in
higher education. Her areas of research
include entrepreneurship, leadership and
social responsibility, among others.
His areas of research are, among others, mobile
applications and networks, business
intelligence, web services, database and
security.
Dr. Paladan sees IUGB as a university that
offers a global education to West African
countries and exposes students to the
American higher education system.
Regarding his IUGB experience, Dr. Bayomock
said, “My involvement in this unique liberal arts,
English-speaking institution in West Africa has
been challenging and exciting so far. IUGB
recognizes the contributions of professors and
assists them with resources to succeed.”
She observed that “IUGB is a diverse
institution that provides an opportunity to
learn about and to appreciate the uniqueness
of other cultures.”

The IUGB Foundation’s experienced Board of Directors believes that investing in
new, ethical approaches to higher education is the key to economic advancement
in Côte d’Ivoire and the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa. The Board is committed to
IUGB’s vision of becoming a “Regional Center of Excellence” because in doing so,
the University increases Africa’s human talent and serves as a model worthy of
emulation throughout Africa.
