Here at Central Wheel Components (CWC),
we may not have invented the wheel, but
we have built, rebuilt and restored it many
times since its inception. In fact, since we
started in 1897, we’ve built motorcycle
wheels for every bike from Adler to
Zundapp. Four generations on, CWC is still
a family owned and run company.

the spoked wheels for Norton, as well
as rebuilding all spoked wheels for The
National Motorcycle Museum and Sammy
Miller Museum. Both museums use CWC
because of their requirement for high quality
workmanship. We also supplied Triumph

CWC currently supply trade and retail

around the world, our sales team have
built up strong relationships with many
of our diverse customer base. In the UK,
sales are becoming more retail orientated
as older wheel builders find it increasingly
difficult to pass on their skills to the younger
generation. Generally speaking, business
continues to grow, comprising 60% classic
wheel building and 40% off-road/motocross,
with the latter growing at a phenomenal rate.

Your order is important to us and to enable
us to get things right first time, we need
you to supply us with as much accurate
information as possible. The biggest problem
our sales team has to deal with is inaccurate
information, often due to the many changes
that have occurred during the lifetime of your
motorcycle. For example, motorcycles from
the 1960s are now over 50 years old and have
seen great changes, and a 1901 De Dion
Tricycle has seen massive changes. Original
equipment hubs, rims and spokes may well
have been replaced, and you cannot assume
that the OEM’s spoke dimensions in the
original workshop manual will fit your wheel
today. Please remember that CWC supply
replacement parts not replicas!
Whether you are an enthusiastic amateur or
professional motorcycle restorer, we require full,
accurate details so as not to waste time or money.
It is important you supply us with the following
information when you prepare your order:

sketch with inaccurate measurements.

• Width and diameter of rim and number of spokes, eg. 19” x 1.85” x 40 hole.
• Type of rim: chrome-plated, powder coated steel, stainless steel, or alloy.
• Most rims will be dimpled and drilled (depending on the type of hub), and wheels will usually have 36 or 40 spokes, although don’t be surprised to find 28 or 32 holes in a rim, plus one for the valve hole and one or two for the security bolts (which are fitted to the rim to stop tyre slippage).
• Every hub requires the holes in the rim to
be set at a unique angle, so it’s essential
you supply the dimensions D1, D2, W1
and O1 when ordering replacement rims.

• If a complete rebuild is required, your old
hub will need to be supplied.
• When ordering new rims, if possible state
the type of hub the wheel currently has eg. Full width, conical, disc brake, QD, cotton reel or single sided.

Chrome Rims
Elite Classic Rim
The Elite Classic Rim is produced for the
restorer who demands only the best, and
as it’s name suggests is the highest quality
rim available. We have achieved this by
enhancing the traditional CWC British
Chrome Rim to an extremely high level,
providing what is undisputedly the number
one finish available on a rim.
This is our own brand of British rim, rolled
to a replica of the popular Dunlop rim of
the 1960’s. This high quality, bespoke rim
is hand polished prior to being dimpled and
drilled to your specific requirements. Then
it is triple plated using copper, nickel and
chrome to BS EN12540 (service condition
4) ensuring a high quality finished product.
The raw rim sections are polished, dimpled
and drilled to original specifications and
then given an extra polish before plating.
They are plated to BS EN12540-2000,
which is the highest specification available,
and in order to produce a thicker, deeper
chrome plated finish, we have doubled their
time in the plating tanks.
All rims are stamped ‘Made in England’
and because each is individually made to
your requirements, you need to allow 28
days for delivery. Different dimple patterns
are available or you can choose undimpled
rims. We also supply rims in bare metal
suitable for painting, powder coating or
alternative plating.

CWC Stainless Steel Rim

CWC stainless steel rims are a replica
of the O.E.M Jones-Dunlop rim profile.
They have a slight sheen but are not
highly polished.
These rims offer a “no rust” solution
for wheel rebuilds on your restoration
project. These rims are ideally suited
for area’s where salt air or road salt is
a major factor.
They are available either pre-drilled for
fitments or undrilled ready to be
punched out to a customer’s own
requirements in the sizes below:

TS Type
The ‘Turismo Cross’ is the most hard
wearing of the profiles. This non-valanced
rim is commonly seen on off-road,
competition and normal road bikes.
The profile of this ‘Super’ rim was popular
on bikes from the late 60’s and 70’s.
Known as a valanced rim because of the
shoulder running around the edge, the TS
rim offers classic styling for classic bikes.

The Excel flanged alloy rim is undoubtedly
the best of its kind, but comes at a price
as these rims cost considerably more
than the Morad equivalents. Unlike the
polished finish of the Morad rims, the
Excel is silver anodised, giving a more
corrosive resistant finish, but moving
away from the traditional look of the old
Borrani and Dunlop flanged rims.

Size of Spoke
Important
For your safety, please check the spoke
nipples supplied to ensure they are the
correct size for the spokes when fitted and
will hold tensions. Check nipple holes in the
rim to ensure that the nipples supplied have
suitable clearance; and check hub and rim for
damage before assembling the wheel. When
assembling the wheel, please ensure spokes
are tensioned to the manufacturer’s specification,
and check tension in the wheels regularly to
avoid spoke breakage.

The illustrations on pages 16 and 17 show
the types of spoke we supply, and the basic
dimensions we need - L, G, A and B – to make
a spoke. Please remember to tell us how many
spokes you require and send a spoke sample
if possible. Remember it is quite possible to
change from an original galvanised to a stainless
steel spoke or from a single butted to a single
gauge. When ordering a single or double butted
spoke, both gauges should be given, eg. if the
spoke tapers from 8 gauge to 10 gauge, it should
be written as 8/10g. Details of all the spoke
gauges we supply are given on pages 18 and 19,
along with the nipple sizes we carry in stock.

Most motorcycles have single gauge or
single butted spokes fitted as standard,
although some early BSA’s feature a
combination of both types of spoke.
Likewise, some early motorcycles

Nipples
The nipples we supply are made from either
brass, steel or aluminium, each with different
surface treatments, depending on the
material the spoke is manufactured from:
• Nipples for galvanised spokes are made of steel and are bright zinc plated.
It is also worth noting that while
many pre-war models were built
using galvanised spokes, the majority
of replacement spokes we supply
for rebuild are now made from
stainless steel.
• Nipples for stainless steel spokes are made from brass and are nickel plated.
• Nipples made from aluminium are available for use with Bulldog Spokes (Trials, Scramble, Motocross and
Enduro Bikes).

Central Wheel Components now offer a full
in-house powder coating service for motorcycle

Prior to blasting and powder coating, all parts will
be masked to protect specific areas. The key to a
quality job is in the preparation, so if there is any
area on a component you wish to be protected,
please specify this when you order.
Where possible, please dismantle parts before
sending them to us and keep any parts not
being powder coated in your possession to
avoid the possibility of them being misplaced. If
using a carrier, please ensure parts are packed
appropriately and are free of heavy grease and oil.

Supermoto Wheels
Supermoto is a recent development in
the world of motorcycling and involves
converting the wheels and brake
components of a conventional Motocross,
Enduro or Trials bike for Supermoto use.
At Central Wheel Components, we are
committed to quality and use only products
manufactured to the highest standards.
Our Supermoto wheels are made using
our own SM Pro Performance hubs (other
brands available on request) fitted to SM
Pro, Morad or Excel rims, depending on
your budget. All spokes are manufactured
from high tensile “Bulldog” stainless steel.
The first and best option is to have a
complete new set of wheels produced,
thereby equipping you with a set of
Supermoto wheels for competition or road
use, and keeping your existing off-road
wheels for those muddy weekends.
Wheel House Tyres, the specialist
tyre fitting division of Central Wheel
Components, offers a range of upgrades
to improve the stopping power of your new
Supermoto bike, and stock the latest tyres
from all the major manufacturers, including
those specific to Supermoto.
The second option is to assemble a new
set of wheels using your existing hubs,
although this will mean you lose the
off-road ability of your bike.
CAMO
Before fitting your new Supermoto wheels,
we suggest you replace your existing
sprocket to allow for the change in wheel
and tyre size, and different usage. We
supply our own range of sprockets for this
purpose, and when fitted with a gold chain,
