MIXED VIEWS ON
A453 OPENING
journey time will decrease and travelling will
become a lot more faster for drivers in the
near future.
By Thomas Hewitt
Another economical renovation has been
concluded in the area, as the Clifton section of
the A453 highway has been opened in all of its
lanes in another encouraging development.
The new layout of the urban section within Clifton
has been formed into three new roundabouts,
along with two sets of traffic lights, which are
designed to help regulate traffic congestion
within the area.
The opening of the expansion will also be
followed in the coming weeks by the opening of
the road linking Mill Hill to junction 24 of the M1.
The extension, which began back in January
2013, has seen the single lanes of the A453
expanded into two parallel road lanes in
each direction, in a move that is being widely
anticipated to decrease traffic congestion
during intense rush hours, as well as remove
accident black spots and improve journey time
consistency for drivers travelling on the road.
Clifton and its community have lately been
on the receiving end of a number of elevating
restructurings over the past couple of months,
with the construction and opening of two popular
American fast-food restaurants, McDonald’s and
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Marie Blatherwick, a resident within the Clifton
estate, believes that the expansion will have
a significant effect on the staying time drivers
have in waiting to get out of the roads close to
the A453.
“I think it will have a positive impact,” she said. “It
made a difference to me getting out of the Grove
earlier this morning.
“My husband uses it daily as he works at the
Power Station and after months of misery, he is
hopeful as well.”
However, other residents have argued that the
traffic lights installed on the extended A453 will
intensify waiting intervals for drivers, as well as
increase jamming and obstruction during rush
hour times.
Carl Chaston said: “I can’t see it making any
difference. You’ve still got to stop for all the
traffic lights and crossing, so there will always be
a queue.

CLIFTON TRAM SONG Two local residents have produced a song about
Nottingham’s tram extension to Clifton. Brian
Lund and Richard Williams also made a video to
go with their song ‘Long Long Gone’. Brian told The Local News: “Rich and I knew
each other years ago at South Wolds School in
Keyworth and then met up a couple of years ago
at a local guitar club. “In March 2014, I wrote the song ‘Nottingham
Take Me Back’, which he liked and offered to
record it in his West Bridgford studio.
“Long Long Gone basically came as a result
of the Nottingham tram extension, as I idly
wondered what was at the end of each line. Thus
Hucknall got Lord Byron, Clifton had Jake Bugg
and Beeston Bendigo. Then it was just a case of
putting the words to music.”
The video can be watched online at YouTube
youtu.be/vLXG3fS6Mls. Pictured: Jen Conway,
Nathan Hart (actors in the video), Richard
Williams & Brian Lund. “Crusader Island is a joke now if you are coming
from the Gotham direction.”
Some residents within the Clifton estate
have expressed their concerns regarding the
expansion, saying that they believe the extension
of the A453 will not make much difference to
traffic congestion, whilst others believe that

The Peacock, Southchurch Drive, Clifton, NG11 9FB
THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW
arrives in The Peacock, Southchurch Drive, and offers local
people the unique opportunity to come along and have a
free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot
cash offer without any obligation.
Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands
Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along
with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few
items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s
wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were
totally amazed to receive over £2,000.
Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel
estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So
why not take this chance to search through your attic,
drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting
on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find
our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly.
There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free
evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.
Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are
numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit
to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex,
valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000.
The pub is well known to local residents and is well placed
with plenty of car parking available.
So on Monday 20th July you have the chance to visit
the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers
absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of
professional valuations and now his expertise is available at
no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours
and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders
are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands

CLIFTON SCHOOLS’
DANCE FESTIVAL
SHOWCASES YOUNG
TALENT
More than 80 Clifton youngsters hit the stage for
a spectacular dance extravaganza.
The Clifton Schools Sports Partnership 2015
Dance Festival, hosted by The Farnborough
Academy, showcased the dance talent of pupils
from the school.
Its five feeder primaries – The Glapton Academy,
Dovecote Primary, Milford Academy, Highbank
Primary and Whitegate Primary - were also
involved, making a total of 88 students involved
in the event.
Dance troupes from the schools practised hard
all term to prepare for the event.
With help and support from their teachers they
choreographed exciting routines to hit pop tunes
such as ‘The Climb’ by Miley Cyrus, ‘Lips are
Movin’ by Meghan Trainor and the theme from
Ghostbusters.
Some of the acts gave themselves catchy stage
names such as The Whitegate Dancing Divas,
The Milford Stars and The Highbank Minis.
The show also featured solo GCSE dance
performances by The Farnborough Academy
pupils Shauna Bales and Megan Smithand a
performance by Nottingham Trent University
Dance Society, which showed the younger
dancers how they can progress.
The show involved pupils from Year 1 right
through to Year 10 and attracted huge support
from the local community.
GRAFFITI PATH CHARTS
CAREER HOPES
Year 8 pupils from The Farnborough Academy
in Clifton convinced more than 200 Nottingham
University students and lecturers to take part in
their graffiti art project to highlight young people’s
career aspirations. The youngsters, who are all
aged 12 and 13, were invited by Nottingham
University to create the graffiti career path along
one of its walkways.
They used stencils and spray paint to create
hundreds of speech boxes, each one featuring
the sentence openers “As a child I wanted to
be…” and “Today I want to be…”. They then set
to work persuading throngs of university students
and staff to chalk their answers into the boxes as
they poured out of lectures.
Farnborough’s Julianne England said: “A huge
thank you to the university for inviting us and for
being so enthusiastic about contributing.”
More than 300 people from the local community
gathered to celebrate and enjoy the creativity of
the young performers.
Heather Straker, Clifton schools sports coordinator, told The Local News: “We were so
proud of the pupils’ commitment to develop their
dance skills.
“Their courage to perform in front of such a large
audience was fantastic.”

FACELIFT FOR
PLAYING FIELDS
For great value advertising email [email protected]
“We were all one and the same, shared
the workload, worked together well, each
contributing whilst still having fun. Towards the
end of the day, we had thought we wouldn’t be
able to finish on time, but we pulled together and
rose to the challenge to finish what we’d set out
to do.
Volunteers from Nottingham’s intu Broadmarsh
and intu Victoria Centre swapped their uniforms
for paintbrushes to help give Clifton Playing
Fields a spruce up as part of Give and Gain
Day. Staff from both centres were given the
opportunity to take a break from their usual
working week to give their time to help perform
much-needed maintenance at the park, as part
of the volunteering initiative run by Business in
the Community.
“It was really satisfying to have achieved
something together and united as a team – and
everyone felt like we’d really done something
quite special.”
Jane Fewkes, guest services manager at intu
Victoria Centre, said: “This gave us a fantastic
opportunity to build relationships with our
colleagues across both centres and a platform
for building team intu spirit. The team leaders we
appointed on the day don’t do that in their usual
work roles and the managers present on the day
weren’t managing the project in any way.
The 14 volunteers spent the day helping to give
the external fences at the popular playing fields
a new look with a fresh lick of paint – something
that might not have been possible without them.
Amy Dibble, marketing communications manager
at both centres, said: “Our relationship with
Business in the Community has meant we’ve
been able to offer our staff the opportunity to do
some volunteering as part of their job roles, and
we were delighted with the response.”
SILVERDALE GROUP
CREATE WOOLLY HATS
Dedicated Silverdale Knit and Natter Group has
created nearly 2,000 little woolly hats this year for
Age UK and Innocent’s Big Knit campaign. The
hats will be found adorning innocent smoothie
bottles on sale later and for each one sold,
innocent donates 25p to Age UK’s Spread the
Warmth campaign, helping to fund national and
local winter projects.
Brenda Preece, one of the knitters, said: “Age
UK has helped me in getting my central heating
installed and also rewired my electrical. This
support has helped me stay in my house and
motivated me in supporting this fundraising.”
Mick Tinkler, chief executive officer at Age UK
Notts, said: “The Big Knit couldn’t happen
without the support of local knitters and we’re
extremely grateful to everyone from the Silverdale
Knit and Natter Group, who got involved and
knitted hats. The funds raised will go a long way
towards supporting local winter projects, which
are vital in helping older people.”

MCDONALD’S OPENS
IN CLIFTON
By Thomas Hewitt
Word-renowned American fast-food restaurant
McDonald’s has officially opened its doors to the
general public in Clifton.
The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
“I think we will make a difference,” said Jerry.
“We are a community restaurant that is on the
doorstep of Clifton Estate.
HERMITAGE PRE-SCHOOL
CHOSEN BY TSB CLIFTON
“We are going to be a big part of the community
here in Clifton by having jobs available, because
that is what the people will want. I believe that we
will be a good neighbour to Clifton.
The Hermitage Pre-School in Ruddington has
been chosen as a charity partner by the Clifton
branch of the TSB Bank. The partnership was
unveiled by Justin Whittaker, TSB Clifton local
manager, who presented the charity with a
£100 donation to kick-start their partnership.
Hermitage Pre-School was nominated locally
for the work it does in the communities of
Ruddington and Clifton, to provide pre-school
learning to children through play in a secure and
caring environment.
“We are currently sponsoring the local Clifton
Football Club and I think that Clifton not only
looks a lot better with the improved A453 and
our McDonald’s, but will also give people another
reason to come and visit our area in the very
near future.”
With the opening of the A453, it means another
encouraging economical development brings
itself to light in the heart of the Clifton region.
The popular franchise, which is expected to
employ approximately 80 local people, had
been in construction over the past six months,
alongside another fast-food restaurant, KFC.
Panthers general manager, Gary Moran, said:
“Jerry Nicholls and his team at McDonald’s
in the Nottingham area are a proven business
success story and the Nottingham Panthers are
proud to be associated with them as partners
and sponsors of the club. We wish them every
success in their new venture.”
The news of the fast-food restaurant opening
in Clifton has been met with mixed views from
residents within the community. Some have
argued that the concept of having two fastfood outlets is both harmful and detrimental to
people’s health, as well as the concern for litter
being left around the area.
Other residents claim that both restaurants are
beneficial towards reducing the number of people
who are currently unemployed within the region
at present.
The restaurants have been built on the site of the
former Man of Trent Pub, which was bulldozed
more than two years ago.
Becky Walker said: “McDonald’s has, for now,
improved the area, as it is no longer a derelict
site. Jobs have been created and some Clifton
residents applied for those positions, so there are
definitely some positives to take.”
Planning permission for both restaurants
were approved back in 2012, but the projects
were rescheduled because of the ongoing
A453 dualling works, with the latter now also
completed through Clifton.
Nottingham Panthers players David Clarke, Steve
Lee, and Robert Farmer, along with boxer Carl
Froch, were on hand to help officially open the
new McDonald’s - and they were plenty of local
people at the launch.
The franchise is owned by Jerry Nicholls and he
believes that the restaurant will have a positive
impact in the community, as well as help to
create more job opportunities for people who are
currently unemployed at present.
By becoming a charity partner, the Hermitage
Pre-School will benefit from fundraising activities
by TSB partners working in the Clifton branch.
In addition, TSB is encouraging its partners to
spend a day - when they would normally be
working - out in their community supporting their
local charity partner with their time and skills
TSB’s branch in Clifton will now aim to raise as
much money as possible for them throughout
2015 to support the work the charity does in the
local community.
Faisal Khan, branch manager at TSB in Clifton,
said: “I’m delighted to announce the Hermitage
Pre-School as our first local charity partner in
Clifton and Ruddington.
“Our focus at TSB is to serve local customers
and businesses in order to fuel local economies,
and that’s why we’re launching a new approach
to how we support charity and communities.”
Phillippa Rogers added: “I will definitely take my
kids up there as a treat, because I know they will
love it. I just hope that they manage to keep the
litter at bay.”
Natalie Richards, who lives close to the newlybuilt restaurant, said: “I live on the road up from
the McDonald’s and I always have leaves and
rubbish constantly blown down the side of my
house. I’m dreading picking up half-empty Big
Mac boxes every morning after people have
walked past and dumped them.”

you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what
you’ve always got. We can’t change the past, but
we can change how we allow the past to affect
us. Don’t allow the past to spoil the future – it
hasn’t happened yet. If we dwell in the past and
fear the future, we forget about now.
Have you ever tried a diet and only done it for
two weeks, then got so fed up with not being
able to have this and not having that? I have
great news for you. Slimming World is amazing
and they have a three-step plan to follow. You
actually don’t have to stop anything you like, it’s
all about moderation.
I never thought I could lose weight myself. I had
tried so many different plans. With Slimming
World I lost six stone and it changed my health
so much. I still have my treats and go out for
meals. I use Slimming World ready meals when
I’m in a rush, just adding my veg to it. I have
Slimming World fish & chips, curries, chillies and
even pizza. I’ve never looked back.
I became a consultant two years ago and
now run groups on Monday 5pm and 7pm,
Wednesday 9:15am and 11:15am and Friday
8am and 10am, all taking place at the Royal
British Legion in Clifton. The group has amazing
members, losing outstanding amounts of weight
per week. Support is endless and a cuppa is
there for you too. If you are interested in any of
my groups or need more information, telephone
0115 921 1202 and ask for Jo.

CURTIS PARKINSON
SOLICITORS: NEW RULES
CONSIDERED FOR PPI
PAYMENTS
Following the decision of the Supreme Court in
November 2014, a failure to disclose to a client a
large commission payment of a single premium
PPI policy made the relationship between the
lender and the borrower unfair. The FCA has now announced that it is
considering new rules on how customers should
be compensated. Do you need help to take stock of what’s wrong
and take steps to make things right? If you
want motivation, encouragement, guidance and
support to be the person you deserve to be,
then call Kate now for a free, confidential and
no-obligation consultation.
The FCA’s response to the ruling indicates that
even if the PPI policy is otherwise sound, the
seller could still have to repay the customer if it
has received a big undisclosed commission. Kate Blatherwick is a clinical hypnotherapist,
psychotherapist, EFT practitioner and weight
management consultant. She has recently been
awarded senior practitioner status by the General
Hypnotherapy Register, is a tutor at MindWorks
Therapy Training and an NCP-accredited
supervisor for therapists.
Please make contact with Bill Martin at Curtis
Parkinson Solicitors in Nottingham for a first
free interview.
You may therefore have a claim to make in
these circumstances. Telephone him on 0115 964 7765 for more details
about this subject.
Call Kate on 0115 822 4874 or 07941 357973

WHY CHOOSE
PROGRASS LAWN
CARE COMPANY?
When choosing and entrusting a company to look
after your lawn - which is usually the centrepiece
of any garden - you have to be sure that you
make the right choice.
Prograss have a selection of mechanical
equipment that suits all sizes of lawns from small
to large (see picture below).
If you would like Prograss to come and do a free,
no-obligation lawn health check, please phone
01949 837367.
Prograss have customers ranging from lawns of
10m2 up to lawns of over an acre. Each customer
is equally important to Prograss.
You can also send an email to them at
[email protected]. Alternatively, you can visit
Prograss online by logging onto their website at
prograss.com.
Although the core of the business is domestic
lawns, Prograss have also done work on football,
rugby and cricket pitches.
Lawn care, when not done correctly, can do more
harm than good and if it goes wrong, then the
recovery could take most of the season that you
use your garden.
Prograss are one of the few qualified, local,
independent companies in a sea of franchises
that dominate the lawn care market across
the country.
By choosing Prograss, you can be guaranteed
that each treatment will be done carefully and
undertaken by a qualified operator - and with the
best equipment.
Only the best products will be used on your
garden, both for fertilising and for moss/weed
control. All products used by Prograss are child
and pet friendly.
The fertilisers Prograss use are the same as the
ones that golf and sports fields use.
They are aimed at soil conditioning and grass
health and don’t encourage excessive growth.
For example, golf courses want their greens’ staff
working on the course, not cutting grass all day.
Prograss invest heavily in the best equipment
available for doing the mechanical treatments,
such as aeration and scarification.

THOUSANDS RACE IN
LOCAL REGATTA
started at 8am and finished at 6:30pm.
The Carl Smith Trophy was held for the fastest
junior sculler, with O. Dix of Leicester winning
the boys event and R. Armstrong of Bedford
Grammar School winning the girls event.
Over 2,300 competitors descended on Holme
Pierrepont to race in the Nottingham City Regatta
and the Nottingham Masters and Club Regatta.
With over 161 different boat classes over the two
days, there were over 200 races coming down
the course at the rate of one every five minutes.
The competing clubs came from as far afield as
Exeter, London, Norwich and Durham. On the
Saturday, racing was held over the full 2,000
metres. The weather was fine but with a strong
cross wind on the course, making racing difficult
and it certainly helped the sheltered lanes. Racing
Nottingham Rowing Club were the most
successful club with 10 winners over the day.
Rowan Law won elite sculls, the men’s squad
won senior coxed and coxless fours with the
same crew. Other wins included elite double
sculls and IM3 coxless fours.
The women’s squad won elite coxless pairs,
senior and IM3 single sculls and the junior girls won both the under-18 and under-16+
double sculls.

both returned from the 2015 ISKA MMA World
Championships as gold medalists.
Their coach, Jake Shore, told The Local News:
“As their coach at both JPS Combat Fitness and
for ISKA England MMA, I am really proud of their
achievements.
“Sam was one of the first-ever students to start
training with me and Becky is my business
partner and girlfriend. It is definitely the highlight
of my career as a coach so far.”
