Mets fans got their first peak
of the Amazin’s new $800 million home yesterday, and many
say the team finally hit one out
of the park.
“It’s beautiful,” said Daniel Gershburg, 28, of Brooklyn. “It makes
you proud to be a Mets fan.”

The stands, about half-full,
were filled with Mets fans eager
to roam the unfamiliar concourses and check out the stadium’s
unique offerings, such as the
fifth-floor bar.
“Everything is fresh and new,”
said Jose Bisono, 21, of Brooklyn.
“They definitely did a good job.”
Fans raved about the clear
sight lines from the stands, the
majestic rotunda entrance dedicated to Jackie Robinson and the
expanded food selection, which
includes a Shake Shack branch
in center field.
“It reminds me of Ebbets when
I was a kid,” said Leo Magno, 71, of
Maspeth, referring to the former
home of the Brooklyn Dodgers,
whose brick facade the designers
of Citi Field emulated.
The game was sold out, though
perhaps the weather kept many
of the 42,000 ticket holders at
home. At $5, the tickets were far
cheaper than most of what will be
available once the stadium opens
for real on April 13. The Mets

There is still some last-minute

Pols try to put brakes on huge MTA hikes
BY HEATHER HADDON
[email protected]
This week’s forecast is
looking sunnier for straphangers, as Albany leaders
are likely to unveil an MTA
bailout that would stave off
crippling service cuts and
fare increases.
The compromise proposal being cobbled together
could include a payroll tax
and a smaller fare increase,
Albany officials said.
Lawmakers intend to
strip out a controversial
plan to toll free city bridges, but drivers are likely to
still feel stung by increases
among a menu of 13 carownership fees.
“It doesn’t seem fair,”
said Mike Krinke, 49, a
Manhattan driver who also
uses the subway. “I’d rather
the tolls go up.”
Last week, the MTA
board voted to raise fares
by at least 23 percent in
June and make dozens of
service cuts, including
eliminating two subway
lines and 21 local bus
routes. The agency’s $1.2
billion debt has ballooned
more than expected, and
officials may need to raise
fares again next year if Al-
bany doesn’t come through
with new money.
“There’s a definite determination to do something,”
said Assemb. Rory Lancman (D-Flushing).
An MTA spokesman said
the agency would support
a plan that funds both
operational and capital
expenses, and that the
fare increase could still be
reversed.

Budget deal is just in time
A $131.8 billion state
budget to be adopted tomorrow calls for increases
in income taxes on New
Yorkers making more than
$300,000.
The state legislature
reached an agreement
over the weekend, and
the Democrats are rushing
to meet tomorrow’s deadline for budget adoption.
If they succeed, it will be
only the third time in 25
years.
The state’s budget deficit has climbed to a record
$16.2 billion.
“We made the tough
choices necessary to
address that challenge
through shared sacrifice
and responsible budgeting,’’ Gov. David Paterson
said in a statement.
The income tax surcharge on wealthy New
Yorkers would expire in
three years. It mirrors a
similar temporary charge
on the incomes of millionaires enacted after the 9/11
terrorist attacks.
The agreement uses
federal stimulus aide to restore Paterson’s proposed
$1.1 billion cut to school
aid.
Smith and Silver also
restored some unspecified
reductions in health care,
and aid to municipalities
was maintained at this
year’s levels.

Biden girl ‘coke vid’ lawyer quits
A lawyer helping to
hawk a videotape that
allegedly shows Vice
President Joe Biden’s
little girl snorting cocaine has stepped off
the job, according to the
entertainment Web site
RadarOnline.com.
The images of a woman
resembling 27-year-old
Ashley Biden, a Delaware
social worker, were captured by a hidden camera
at a party, the site said.
According to the New

a woman in her 20s with

straw into her nostril and
snorting lines of white
powder.
Tom Dunlap, of the
Washington, D.C.-based

RadarOnline.com said.
The seller was allegedly seeking as much as

A call to Dunlap was

Ashley is Biden’s only

While nearly everyone
is feeling the emotional
toll of the economic crisis,
experts are studying rare
cases where the strain
became tragically unbearable, pushing some to
murder-suicides.
“It’s being under tremendous stress with no

financial pressures or to a
domestic situation or for
the elderly, health care issues,” said Kristen Rand,
legislative director of the
Violence Policy Center, a
gun control group based in
Washington, D.C.
In January, a California
man shot his wife and five
kids before turning the gun
on himself. The couple, laid
off from their hospital jobs
and deep in debt, had “no
place to go,” according to
the father’s last note. Later
that week, Ohio police tried
to quell rumors that financial issues led a family of
four to a similar fate.
Sampson Blair, a University at Buffalo sociology professor, predicted an increase

Obama won’t

As he carries out a

country.
Obama said U.S. ally
Pakistan needs to be more

Pakistan as a sovereign
government,” the president told CBS’ “Face the

The president also

security situation in
Afghanistan, saying, “Unless we get a handle on it
now, we’re going to be in
trouble.” He made clear
that his new strategy for
the long war is “not going to be an open-ended
commitment of infinite
resources” from the U.S.

Is March out like a bull?
The markets are in a
good mood — coming off
three weeks of gains — and
this week should be a turning point for the Street and
its March rally.
A batch of new government reports would have
the power to reverse the
trend if the data is not
up to investors’ expectations, but they could also
bolster growing optimism
about the direction of the
economy.
“If we see upside on the
data, we might hold — or
rally some more,” said Doug
De Groote, a managing
director at United Wealth
Management, a division
of United Capital Financial
Advisors.
Last week, the Dow
Jones industrials gained
6.8 percent, the Standard
& Poor’s 500 index picked
up 6.2 percent and the Nasdaq composite index rose 6
percent.
The rally was fed in
part by surprising gains
in housing and factory orders numbers. This week,
the government reports
on how many jobs were
lost last month, and the
Institute for Supply Management will report on the
manufacturing and service
sectors.
Economists expect the
Labor Department to say
Friday that 640,000 jobs
were cut last month. The
unemployment rate is expected to have risen to 8.4
percent from 8.1 percent
during the month of February, according to economists polled by Thomson
Reuters.

Eco-‘Depot’ helps green homes
BY LANA BORTOLOT
Special to amNewYork
All it took was one toxic
scare and Sarah Beatty decided it was time to spread
the gospel of green.
She even built a temple.
The Green Depot, the
brand’s flagship store,
opened at 222 Bowery last
month. The 3,500-squarefoot store sells materials for
the home that are deemed
safe and environmentally
friendly, from toxin-free
paints and cleaning supplies to baby furniture.
Beatty, 43, turned to
green entrepreneurship
after her home renovation
revealed a mold contamination.
She saw an opportunity
to get into the green construction business.
“I thought there was a
transition coming, a market for it, yet few supplies
and no reliable access
point for getting products,”
she said.
In 2005, she founded
Green Depot to supply
construction companies
with eco-friendly building
materials. She expanded
into retail to serve home-

improvement types who
also want to keep it green.
“It was an imperative to
create a place for people to
enter the door, understand
a definition of green and let
us help drive the conversation forward,” Beatty said.
Customers can shop according to their concerns,
from chemical sensitivities
to fair-trade practices.
“We offer options that
are ‘good,’ ‘better’ and
‘best,’ not only in price
point but in product attri-
butes,” said store manager
Bryan Tereza.
Beatty said her company
is experiencing more than
200 percent growth a year.
The construction business
is ailing, but there has
been an emphasis on using
green materials to retrofit
buildings.
The store is an experiment in the recycle-reusereduce philosophy.
“I think it’s really to show
people green is about more
than mud huts and Birkenstocks,” Beatty said. “We
want to show people you
can do it from the ground
up.”

By tomorrow, GM will have to decide the fate of its Hummer brand.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said yesterday that bailout
funds for banks have been reduced

The world is gearing up for the

which starts Thursday. At a summit this weekend world leaders
discussed the need for government
control and for free markets.

His latest
farce has him
playing Stan, a
jerk con man
who gets caught
and sentenced
to prison. As a
smallish man,
he realizes that
he’ll be “popular” with the cell mates in
that stereotypical prison
comedy kind of way. To
curb that, he begins training in the martial arts
with The Master (David
Carradine). Once he gets
to prison, it’s kind of like
“Shawshank Redemption”
crossed with a kung fu
movie.
Schneider, who also directed the direct-to-DVD
movie, was
looking for
“someone
who could
kill you with
one punch
but could
also drop
dead at any
second,” he
says, laughing.
“And
David Carradine, in the right outfit,
is that guy,” he adds. “And
he’s wonderful and he’s
funny. I loved working
with him, it was a real
pleasure. Even after he
broke my finger.”
A broken digit
from the force of Carradine’s nunchucks was
one of many injuries the
former “Saturday Night
Live” actor received.
He also tore his rotator
cuff hitting people over
and over again with the
nunchucks and he broke
his ankle.
One of Schneider’s
trainers warned the
tougher actor that after
people see the movie and
think he can fight, he will
get people who
want to try
to prove
something.
“So far
it’s been OK,”
Schneider says.
“Only women have been
trying to attack me.
Women I’m in a relationship with.”

before we presented them
to everyone else,” Ball
says. “When you have five
guys hanging around a
room with amps and drum
kits, it can be hard to get
heard.”
While the band members may write in solitude,
their live shows are known
for their party atmosphere.
Their onstage reputation
has earned them a following in the jam-band community, despite the fact
that they don’t jam at all.

“I think it started because we played Bonnaroo

bands did,” Ball says. “Now,
everybody does it. Metallica

“I always wonder if the

they say, ‘That’s it? It’s over

After their 2006 album
“How We Operate,” many
fans of British rockers
Gomez thought they were
seeing the birth of an entirely new band — one that
had mellowed with age and
traded some of its more experimental tendencies for
well-crafted folk-rock.
But the old Gomez never
really disappeared, and on
the group’s latest album,
“A New Tide,” the members manage to seamlessly
merge the two styles.
“I don’t think ‘How We
Operate’ was anyone’s favorite record,” says singerguitarist Ian Ball. “I think
it taught us some good lessons, like how to keep our
songs short and not ramble
all over the place. But this
time, we were consciously
aware that we didn’t
want to do something so
straightforward.”
The band also took
a different approach
to recording this time
around. Rather than getting together to work out
their songs in a studio,
each of the group’s three
singer-songwriters worked
separately, e-mailing songs
back and forth.

The cast of ‘Hair’
brings flower power
from the stage
to the streets
BY JULIE GORDON
AND JESSIE PASCOE
[email protected]
The 1967 musical “Hair” is
famous for its young hippie cast
members shedding their clothing in a passionate declaration
of freedom. But what inspires
us in terms of spring fashion are
those very threads — patchedup jeans, fringed vests, long
dresses, flowing tops — that
drop to the stage floor.
So we enlisted the
eight principles of the
Broadway revival, which
opens at the Al Hirschfeld
Theatre tomorrow, to show off
styles that pay homage to the
flower-child vibe of the 1960s as
well as the shapes and trends of
2009.

If you’ve recently been
laid off, there are several
items you’ll want to cross
off your checklist right
away. Michelle DeAngelis, author of “Get a
Life That Doesn’t Suck,”
and a management consultant and corporate
coach, offered tips:
1) Figure out how much
money you are owed.
First things first: You
need to ask about severance, compensation and
sick-day pay that might
still be available.
2) Ask for references.
Make
sure you
have all
your references
in writing before you
leave
the comDeAngelis
pany.
5) Ask for outplacement
services. Many times
your company can give
you counseling on updating your resume as
well as other job search
skills.
6) Ask about relocation
possibilities. You never
know. Your company
may have a branch that’s
hiring. You won’t know
unless you inquire.
7) Help your mood by
identifying and participating in a hobby. “So
many people associate
who they are with what
they do,” DeAngelis says.
“Focus on something you
are really good at or you
really love.”
8) Get a bridge job
right away. DeAngelis
says you shouldn’t hold
out for your dream job.
Pretty soon, you might
find yourself behind in
bill-paying.

online businesses to home start-ups —
and breaks down the (often difficult) art
of managing a shared living and working
space.

alike to recognize the networks at their
disposal. It also shows them how to effectively utilize them — from making the
best of career Web sites to getting the

The ease of eating right
Change your diet
habits without
having to diet
The body digests protein
and fiber slowly, making
you feel fuller longer. Try
mixing high-fiber cereals
into other types of cereal,
salads, stir-fry, muffins,
pancakes and yogurt.
You can also try grinding
up the cereal and mixing
it with bread crumbs to
cook chicken and fish.
An influential government-appointed medical
panel is urging doctors to
routinely screen all U.S.
teens for depression — a
bold step acknowledging that nearly 2 million
teens are affected.
Most are undiagnosed
and untreated, said the
panel, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force,
which sets guidelines for
doctors on many health
issues.
The panel said that
when followed by treatment, including psychotherapy, screening can
help improve symptoms
and help kids cope with
the condition.
The panel recommends
research-tested screening even for kids without
symptoms. “You’ll miss
a lot if you only screen
high-risk groups,” said
task force chairman Dr.
Ned Calonge.
The panel cited questionnaires as the screening tool, to be filled out in
waiting rooms so doctors
can easily spot red flags.

Changing your diet habits isn’t easy, but here are
some simple tips from Sharon Salsman, a Virginiabased dietitian, on taking
the first steps:
Use the ‘80:20’
Try to eat healthy 80
percent of the time. That
means you can “blow” one
meal a week or indulge at
parties.
Plan ahead
If you know you’ll be
having a big meal, cut your
food intake — particularly
fats, sugar and sodium
— before and after. For
example, don’t order a big
pizza for dinner the night
before Thanksgiving.
Divide your plate
Fill half with fruit and
non-starchy veggies such
as broccoli, carrots or
greens. Fill one quarter
with lean proteins (mostly
white meats, beans and
nuts) and the remaining
A top non-diet trick: the 80:20 plan. This means eating
healthy 80 percent of the time and splurging 20 percent.
quarter with starchy veggies such as potatoes, corn,
peas and black beans.
Be colorful
Try to get as many colors
of the rainbow as possible,
plus brown and white, on
to your plate each day.
You’ll find reds, oranges,
yellows, greens, blues and
even purples in the produce aisles.
Add lean protein
Add fish, skinless poultry, pork chops, unsalted
nuts, eggs or light cheeses

Yanks contend again
Big signings spice
up an aging roster
BY PETE CATAPANO

David Wright, left, and Jose Reyes, below, star for the
Mets, whose roster lacks a truly fine-tuned quality.
Relief for Mets, but
not from 2 collapses
We’ll see. The fact is that
the Mets are hoping for a
pleasant surprise from a
slow, sore-bodied slap hitter at second. And there
is no long-term backup
plan in place.
BY MAX J. DICKSTEIN

winter, but they made it
in the right place.

REPORT

First base: B
Lefty slugger Carlos
Delgado’s fiery finish
to the second half last
season kept the Mets
going late in games by
batting runners home.
Such a tear is probably
too much to expect of the
36-year-old Delgado in
consecutive seasons,
but if one Met has
earned the right to
toil without scrutiny, it is the man
who stands at 30th
all-time with 469
career home runs.
Second base: C-
Somehow, the Mets
and Luis Castillo meet
again at second base.
Will Castillo bat leadoff, second, eighth?
Will the 33-year-old
manage to play
100 games? Is his
his $25 million,
four-year contract an immovable albatross?
Third base: A
David Wright continues to anchor the
Mets’ infield, stopping
shots to the hot corner
with his golden glove,
then driving Mets runs
home. He tied a franchise
record with
124 RBIs last
season and,
at 26, is only
likely to
improve.
Despite
his
gaudy
RBI total, Wright
needs to improve his hitting
with runners in
scoring position.
(He hit .243 in this
category last year.)
Catcher: C
The post-Mike Piazza Mets continue to
fill a key position with
borderline players.
Continued on page 26
In the offseason, the Yankees filled
glaring holes in the pitching staff and
at first base. In a tough AL East division with an aging roster, this team
falls short of perfection,
but it still could eclipse
the Yankees’ 2008 total
of 89 wins.

HEART AND SOUL
Shortstop: B
Let’s get the obvious out of the way
first. Derek Jeter is the
Yankees’ heart and soul
and their spark plug.
He is indispensable
in that regard. But
let’s be realistic about his
declining talents. Jeter
is nearly 35, and his
range at shortstop
ranks him near the bottom of the league. His
offensive numbers have
also waned, with his average falling from .344 to
.322 to .300 over the past
three years.
The Yankees got 32
homers and 96 RBIs last
year from the departed
Jason Giambi. Replacing defensively
challenged Giambi is 28-year-old
Mark Teixeira, arguably the most bonus if Posada starts 120 games
coveted offensive player on last win- behind the plate. Jose Molina is
ter’s market. Signed to an eight-year, a serviceable albeit light-hitting
$180 million contract, he gives the backup catcher.

Studious hitter and improving defender Daniel
Murphy won the starting
job in left ahead of journeyman Fernando Tatis, but
that could change if the
former infielder stagnates,
confirming fears that he is
a less-than-everyday talent. Murphy, who turns 24
on Wednesday, is hitting
.356 this spring with 12
RBIs and two triples.
Center field: A
Carlos Beltran, who
turns 32 next month,
should again provide
about 30 home runs, 110
RBIs and 20 stolen bases.
Beltran’s unstinting excellence at the plate and his
fine defense are especially
valuable, considering the
Mets’ instability at the
outfield corners.

Ryan Church blazed into
2008 before a series of
concussions rendered him
merely average for much
of the season. His defensive prowess and left-side
power, glimpsed last year,
are not necessarily returning assets. Church has
gone deep just once in 52
at-bats this spring.

MANUEL BEING MANUEL
Manager: B+
Jerry Manuel’s task — make this patchwork roster into a winner —
may be just as unenviable as his situation last June 17. And yet when
the first-year Mets bench coach replaced fired manager Willie Randolph, Manuel drove a moribund, second-place group to the
brink of the postseason. In that sense, the Mets’ second
consecutive final-day failure was less bitter than that of
2007, when a season-long front-runner foundered in
September. Unless Manuel can again earn the team’s
focus, their sordid history will handicap the Mets.
Even in the NL’s highest-parity division, Manuel
inspires confidence that he can manage the Mets’
fragility when September comes. If he can finally get
the Mets back on track, as they were in the 2006 NLCS,
the 55-year-old skipper will be welcome to stick around.

their bullpen over the winter, casting off longtime

the promise of newcomers
Sean Green and Bobby
Parnell. Acquired from the
Mariners, J.J. Putz has a

Manager (see inset)
Intangibles: D
Early hope reigns for the
Mets each season, even after consecutive September
collapses. But until the
franchise can shrug off its
penchant for harsh disappointment by winning the
NL East or a wild-card postseason entry, the franchise
will become increasingly
mired in self-loathing.

in the toughest division
in baseball despite losing Wang, his ace, for

working without Posada

getting zero wins out of
Hughes and Ian Kennedy.
Girardi may be robotic, but
he knows the game as well
as anybody.
Intangibles: C
This team is crawling
toward a decade without
a championship and has
the pressure of a huge
payroll and star acquisitions, tinged with the ARod sideshow. As always,
there’s a lot more to the
Yankees than what happens on the field, and this
often works against them.

At least he didn’t drive through the drive-through
Police had an easy time catching a man suspected of driving under
the influence. He was waiting for them in his car — where they said
he was passed out in the driver’s seat in the drive-through at a fast
food restaurant. According to police, another customer found the Houston man unconscious at the
drive-through around 3 a.m. Thursday. The other
customer took the keys out of the ignition and called
police, who arrested the man on suspicion of driving under
the influence. Police said the man passed out from a combination
of alcohol and prescription drugs.

07
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Stockpile your resources. Limit your
spending. Use your own good judgment;
don’t just go along with your friends. Stick
with the basics and you’ll succeed after
others have given up.
07
Cancer (June 22-July 22)
The person who yells the loudest isn’t
always right. He could get the most
attention, though. Stand back and let that
happen. You’re wise to keep a low profile for a
while.
07
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
If you and your partner put your
money together, you’ll have enough. But first
you’ll have to agree on what to get and how
much you should pay. Work on that part a
while longer.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Others might think you’re stern and
strict, demanding that rules be followed.
Your family knows you love comfort food and
having your tootsies rubbed. If they don’t, let
them in on the secret.
07
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
There’s no good reason to take on a
new expense, and lots of good reasons not to.
Set to the task of finding a better, cheaper
way. All it takes is determination and
creativity.
07
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
Do what you can to please a critical
person. Don’t dismay if nothing seems to
work. It may not be your fault. Don’t belabor
that point; just get past the barrier any way
you can.
06
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Listen, but don’t pass along gossip
you hear in the workplace. It could be a
misunderstanding based on point of view. It
also might be true, but you need to make sure
before you get involved.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
A pragmatic relative gives you some
good advice. She or he keeps pointing out
how much you’re spending. You hate to hear
it, but you’d be wise to listen and learn. There
may be other ways to achieve your goal.
Gemini (May 21-June 21)
Unfortunately, your in-basket didn’t
empty itself over the weekend. There it is,
waiting for you, as you have your first cup of
coffee. Better have a doughnut, too. Fortify
yourself.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
It can make you a little nervous to have
somebody watch you work. You’re doing a
good job though, so relax and enjoy the
attention. Once you hit your stride, you’ll put
on a great performance.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
Get back to the basics at work. Get
into your normal routine. Don’t try anything
fancy. New ideas or methods are liable to
cause more problems than they solve.
Proceed with caution.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
You may have to defend something
you care a lot about. The person who’s
making the biggest fuss is not very
well-informed. Try to explain in simple terms
that are easy to understand.

No Final 4 for Louisville
Michigan State
beats top seed;
UNC wins, too
Michigan State is marching on to Motown.
The Spartans gave the
Final Four a hometown
feel, stopping overall No. 1
seed Louisville 64-52 yesterday to win the Midwest
Regional.
Goran Suton had 19
points and 10 rebounds as
the second-seeded Spartans (30-6) reached their
fifth Final Four in 11 years.
Only 90 miles from their
campus, the Spartans will
play Connecticut on Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit.
The Spartans made it 30
years after Magic Johnson
led them to a national title
over Larry Bird and Indiana
State.
North Carolina’s Ty Lawson, above, and Michigan State’s
Goran Suton, right, reached the Final Four.

Along with advancing,
the Spartans prevented a
Big East blitz in the Final
Four — Louisville (31-6)
was trying to become
the third school from the
power-packed conference
to make it.
The Cardinals scored 103
points in overwhelming Arizona in the regional semifinal, but barely reached
half that total yesterday.
Louisville lost for the first
time in 14 games and was
ousted from the NCAAs in
the regional final for the
second straight year.

For the second year in a row, Tiger Woods birdied the 18th hole
to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational yesterday. His final-round
67 earned him a one-shot win.
Ty Lawson scored
19 points and Danny
Green added 18 to
lead top-seeded North
Carolina over Blake
Griffin and Oklahoma in
the South Regional final.
The Tar Heels (32-4) advanced to the Final Four for
the second straight year
and will play Villanova in
the national semifinals.
Griffin had 23 points and
16 rebounds for Oklahoma,
but the Sooners (30-6) went
2-for-19 from 3-point range.
North Carolina reached
a record 18th Final Four.
UCLA has been to 18, but
the Bruins’ 1980 appearance was later vacated by
the NCAA because of rules
violations.
This will be the Tar
