Colin Kelly’s B-17 came under attack from Japanese Zeros led by 64-victory ace Saburo Sakai. As Kelly piloted his crippled aircraft back to the Philippines, he ordered his crew to bail out; he was killed in the ensuing attempt to crash-land his warbird.
