KELLY’S CONNECTION
While vacationing in Alaska, Coletti and I took an excursion in Juneau that we will never
forget. We arrived in Juneau early in the morning, disembarked the ship and followed
our guide to a small boat nearby along with fourteen other folks. After a short boat ride
to Douglas Island we were met by a very young man and woman. They corralled us
across the beach and up the hill to a small building. Inside were benches with bright red
hard hats and gloves placed neatly for each of us. The instructions went smoothly then
a quick group photo before boarding the big red flatbed truck for the steep uphill ride followed by another 100
yard trek through the rain forest. Thankfully it was a beautiful sunny day. We noticed the evidences of the old
Treadwell gold mine that thrived here in the early 1900s. Since it was abandoned, the tall hemlock and fir trees
recovered nicely standing what looked like 100 feet tall. And there, mounted in the top of a big tree, was our
first destination—a landing platform at the end of a cable. Wow. Did I have faith in these young folks, in this
cable system, in this harness I wore? The instructor told us to sit in the harness, hold the handle bar above our
heads and off we’d go…
Zip lining turned out to be a favorite experience of our vacation. But
there was one particular station that stuck best in my memory. It was the
highest platform—a very long way to the ground below. As we prepared to
zip to the next platform in yet another tall tree, the instructor said, “This
time I want you to stand at the edge of the platform, rather than sitting in
your harness as you’ve done thus far, just step off the edge of the platform.”
Whoa! Stepping off the edge of a platform hanging on the side of a tree
sixty feet off the ground did not jive with good common sense. I hesitated
for a moment and—wow, what an experience—exhilaration, adrenaline
rush—stupidity or faith or both? Strangely, stepping off the platform rather
than sitting down in the security of the harness required a significant
increase in faith.
I want to think that it was a leap of faith—trusting another person and that zip line system with my life. As
I’ve thought about that experience God has used it to help me consider my faith in him. I realize that I want to
be the kind of Christ follower who is willing and obedient to God’s invitation or command to “step out” to trust
him in all things—even when what he asks me to do goes against MY idea of common sense. I recall that Jesus
scolded his disciples for their lack of faith or little faith.
Like Noah building the ark, Abraham leaving his homeland for the unknown, Moses facing Pharaoh, Peter
stepping out of the boat to walk on the water to Jesus, I want to be a person and a pastor who trusts God
absolutely and leads the church to do likewise. God has not changed, nor has his way of changing his kingdom
on earth—it is by grace through our faithful obedience.
Oh, the exhilaration of falling into the arms of God our loving Father. Let’s step out in faith together.
Gladly Serving,
Kelly
Dear Worship Place family,
What a joy to be a part of the growing family at TWP. We had a
wonderful launch to our new ministry for single adults called "The
Bridge" on August 22nd with around 175 in attendance. We love our
single adults at TWP and I encourage all of our single adults to get involved in the
upcoming activities in the days ahead.
Power Lunch resumes on September 16th with great food, fellowship and outstanding speakers. Here is a look at
our special guests for September:
 September 16th - The Cobb family shares the conclusion of their incredible 4,000 mile walk across America
 September 23rd - Music & the Word with Pastor Kelly
 September 30th - Erin Kiltz, Executive Director of Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG), shares how they are making a
great impact in the lives of adults with special needs
We are blessed at TWP to have the Stephen Ministry. The Stephen Ministry equips and empowers lay caregivers to
provide one-to-one high quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting. If you are interested
in being a part of the training for this outstanding ministry or know someone who is struggling through a difficult
time, contact me and we will put them in touch with a Stephen minister.
I pray for each of you every day that God would bless you in a mighty way. If there is any way I can be of assistance
to you, please e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at the church office. Let's continue to serve
together so God may be glorified.
God bless you,
David

What is a Stephen Minister?
Stephen Ministers are laypeople—Christian men and
women—trained to provide one-to-one care to people
experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief,
divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or
relocation. Stephen Ministers come from all walks of
life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing
Christ's love and care to people during a time of need.

Meals on Wheels
TWP Travels to Israel
April 6—14, 2016
Meals on Wheels programs throughout the country
provide nutritious meals and other nutrition services to
men and women who are elderly, homebound,
disabled, frail, or at risk. These services significantly
improve the quality of life and health of the individuals
they serve and postpone early institutionalization.
Volunteers Needed
The Worship Place has participated in the Meals On
Wheels program for the past several years. At this
time we need two volunteers for regular duty. We also
need additional volunteers as substitutes. Our Meals
On Wheels participation involves one-week shifts
about every nine weeks. We deliver the meals
prepared by the Meals On Wheels staff. This is a very
rewarding opportunity and we are grateful that The
Worship Place is involved in this very worthwhile
program. Please contact John or Martha Hopper at
512-869-8295 to join this dedicated group of
volunteers.
The Biblical Journey thru Israel with Collette Travel is
now available to non-members. A $200 per person
discount is effective until October 1st. Please share this
information with friends and neighbors who may be
interested in traveling with The Worship Place family to
the Holy Land. Brochures are available at the church
office.
Trip coordinator, Nancy Snyder, can be reached
at [email protected] or
512-966-2230.
