PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As I type this report
we have just finished
the 2014 Gemkhana
in Melbourne at
the Hungarian
Community Centre in
Wantirna.
I haven’t got the final
results yet but the
preliminary figures
suggest that even though it was our first
Gemkhana in Melbourne for decades, it was
a successful event. As you know in the past
we have conducted Gemkhanas in various
country areas where the local club did the
bulk of the organizing and running of the
event, this time being in the Metro area, a
number of clubs were involved with organizing
and conducting the show.
I’d like to thank all of the clubs whose
members got involved as without this
involvement we don’t have a Gemkhana.
I single out a few clubs who did the lion’s
share, Rae and her team from Waverley club
who did a great job running the kitchen and
providing food throughout the show. Mike
and the members from Nunawading club
who looked after the entrance throughout
the show, and Nils from Nuna who arranged
permits for various road signs and with help
from Don Johnson had them put up and taken
down and Graham Knight from Nuna who
organized security. Bill from Essendon who
looked after creating artwork for the flyer, the
press advertising and some internal signage
and the show cases. Trevor from Cheong Park
who looked after the logistics of transporting
showcases tables clothes and electrics to and
from the show, additionally members from that
club and other clubs did a great job selling
the raffle tickets throughout the two days.
Kathy from Blue Hills who looked after the
raffle prizes and handled ticket sales prior to
the event, along with being a great Barrel girl
at the prize drawing .Yes we have a barrel, a
big one thanks to the Albury club. I’ve already
thanked those who donated prizes, but I do it
again as they were all first class. Ray and Joy
Page 5
from Morwell who looked after the tailgating,
prior to and during the Gemkhana which
turned out to be a big job well done guys.
Peter our Treasurer who did an immense
amount of work with the accounting side
and bookings prior to and during the show.
Des from Geelong who apart from being on
the organizing group from start to finish also
arranged for the PS system and manned it
throughout the weekend and also arranged
for the demonstrators who I also thank
as they are an important part of our craft.
Gordon’s fluoro display was a great hit with
the young kids and many of the old kids.
Peter from GV Mineral & Craft Group who
looked after the competition side of the show
and arranged the awards and of course
those club members who had entries in
the competitions or prepared showcases to
showcase our hobby. Also Guy Hocking for
his assistance. I also thank Brendan from
Diamond Valley who was there from the very
start on Friday morning for set up and one
of the last to leave Sunday night along with
helping in the kitchen for two days. I thought
that the quality of the trader’s displays was
first class which we thank them for as without
them and the tailgaters we don’t have a
proper Gemkhana.
Apart from those people and Clubs that I
have mentioned there were husbands, wives
and many other members from various other
clubs who all pitched in and helped during
this Gemkhana and we thank them all. Also,
a big thankyou to the Bellarine Jongleurs
a junior performing arts group involving
approximately 60 children each week. They
operate from the Potato Shed Centre on the
Bellarine Peninsula and gave us the use of
their portable P A System for the weekend.
We wish them every success for the future.
It was a risk coming to Melbourne, as hall
and advertising costs were much greater than
in the country, however a number of traders
have already suggested that we do it again
in Melbourne. Well, that’s a decision for a
future executive as our next focus from an
organizing point of view must be on the 2015
GEMBOREE in Horsham right next door to
the picturesque Grampians. Continued page 7

NEWS FROM THE CLUBS
AFG Vic Branch
Traralgon Report 2014
The workshop was held in the games room
hut of the Tandara Caravan Park which
is located mid way between Traralgon
and Morwell (6km) and adjacent to the La
Trobe Regional hospital. Despite the 36⁰C
conditions, twelve machines were in operation
over the weekend
The weather stayed hot and the fires at
Yallourn and threatening the Hazelwood
brown coal mine near Morwell, caused some
concerns at the caravan park. There was
smoke in the air, aerial water bombing traffic
from the adjacent airfield and then the fire
hoses being unrolled at the caravan park as a
precautionary measure. Faceting continued
reassured by the continuous news updates
available from a newly installed TV within the
games room. However, getting home was
less than ideal as a section of the Princes
Highway from the hospital towards Melbourne
was closed from Sunday making it necessary
to find alternative routes.
The schedules for the 2014 Vic branch
competition became available but most
participants had projects already underway,
saving the new cuts for another day. The skite
box showed that several members had been
industrious since the Beechworth workshop.
Most participants put in the hours, with good
attendance from 8.00am and hangers-on still
around well after 9.00pm most nights. Those
present had the opportunity to buy a doping
gadget made by Graham and to hear his tip
regarding how to manage Tite-on which has
hardened in the tube (heat the tube in water at
60⁰C)
As usual the support team provided a great
variety of delights for morning and afternoon
teas from donated goodies purchased or
brought from home for the purpose. Good
eating persistent throughout, notwithstanding
what was being rustled up in caravans, with
Friday night’s run to Morwell for several fish
and chip orders, Saturday night’s outing for a
party of twelve at the Italian Club in Morwell
(great seniors’ deals!) and a barbecue on
Sunday night on site.
The customary Sunday morning meeting
discussed the issue of the name change
for the Vic Branch, which was discussed
and changed at the Beechworth workshop.
Following subsequent dissent over the name
change and some confusion as to the need/
urgency for a change, and a poll to determine
a wider consensus, there was agreement

Bendigo Gem Club
Bendigo have had a busy begining to the
year, but we found time for some interesting
workshops and new members. In the middle
of March we had a Di Chroic workshop. First
workshop is full and now we choose to run a
second one which is also nearly full.
New and interested people are always
popping in to see the Bendigo Gem club.
Our club has grown so much over the last
three years. It is always a pleasure to see
the young ones so interested on Tuesday
nights. Wednesday night is now opened
and Thursdays are always busy days with
Thursday nights still running.
On the Wednesday the fifth of March we
hosted a memorable afternoon for one of our
most respected and lovable members in the
way of an afternoon tea and presentation to
Lynne Evans of LIFE membership to Bendigo
Gem Club. Lynne has been totally involved
with Bendigo Club since 1989. She spent
many hours teaching her craft, secretary,
library, running and organising the Craft table
at Exhibition every September which raised
many thousands of dollars over the years.
Paul Scott President presented Lynne with her
life membership framed certificate and Edith
Oakes Social Secretary presented her with a
beautiful bouquet of flowers. The afternoon
tea was beautifully laid out by new and old
members who were honoured guests at this
function.

As I write this I am sitting in our caravan at
Eldorado. Vic. Joy and Doug Cosson are very
lovely hosts here at Eldorado and are very
happy to fill you in on all the sights and secret
places for the best gems. The weather was
warm on Saturday and so the amethyst fields
were fossicked yesterday morning before the
heat came. The two young members with us,
Leah and Hannah found the last 3 pieces of
amethyst available. All us die hards could not
find any, but we all came home with some
lovely shaped quartz crystals. In the afternoon
we all went up the dry creek looking for
jasper and smoky quartz. We all found some
lovely pieces and our friends from Waverley
Club Trevor and Carol Lee had some good
finds too. Not a fruitful weekend but the most
enjoyable company. With thanks also to
Robin and Gordon Sharp for their help and
friendship on the weekend.

Dandenong Lapidary and Gem Club Inc.
Things at Dandenong have been quite busy
since the Christmas break with several
prospective new members coming along
to see what we have to offer. This is in
addition to the re-emergence of ‘old’ friends
re-establishing contact with us.
Classes are well underway with tuition already
given in wire work, gem setting and engraving.
The club has put together a set of gem setting
tools – pushers, burnishers and gravers
for students and members to use. We are
including how to make these tools as part of
the teaching process so that we can help to
reduce the costs of what would otherwise be
an expensive part of our hobby.
Over the coming months we are seeking to
demonstrate and teach making wire from
scratch using our scraps and filings from
silversmithing. In order to achieve this we are
on the lookout for a set of rollers. If anyone
has a spare lying around or knows of some,
please let us know.
The Dandenong Club now has a letterbox

we will no longer use our PO Box number.
Please could you update your records to

This month has seen the installation of a
second Soldering Station in the Silverwork
Room. This will allow much faster access to
equipment particularly during training courses.
Quotes have been obtained for insulating
the building ceiling and for external paint.
Health & Safety regulations make these “off
ground” tasks more difficult to carry out with
scaffolding etc. being required, internal paint
is also under consideration. The free bus to
the Gemkhana was well received with 23
members taking advantage of the excursion.
Comments were very positive regarding
the event. Other members made their own
way to the event. The Festival of Glass was
held in Drysdale and was also well attended
by members with some outstanding work
on display. Workshops continue to be well
attended. A Silverwork course is currently
underway. Otherwise, business as usual.

In the March POINTER I reported that the
club would be demonstrating lapidary skills at
the Wood, Steel & Steam Festival at Mont De
lancey historic homestead organised by the
Eastern Woodturners. Two of our members
are also members of the wood turners and
at our March meeting they set up a wood
lathe and demonstrated wood turning. Of
particular interest was the use of stone inlay.
The demonstration was very well received
by members. Raffle prize was “Gemstones

used it as a prize at our monthly meeting and
it is well received. The book is great value
for money. Congratulations to the organisers
of the Gemkhana. A great show. Courses
running, lots of jobs to be done and a show to

2014 WARRNAMBOOL GEM SHOW
REPORT.
The 2014 Gem Show ran from Friday 10th till
Sunday 12th of January. The Friday was well
attended in the morning but hot conditions
in the afternoon saw the crowd disappear.
Saturday was excellent with cooler weather
and lots of visitors to the show. Club members
and traders were kept busy throughout the
day. A large number of children attended
the show and the ‘lucky dips’ were very
popular as was the ‘pet rock and pendant
making activity’. The silver-work and Faceting
demonstrations attracted lots of attention. The
‘micro mount specimens/microscope’ display
also had many visitors interested. Members
caught up with ‘rockhounds’/friends from
other clubs and had a good chat. A number of
potential new members as well as some past
members attended.
At 1 p.m. on Saturday the Warrnambool city
council mayor, Michael Neoh, was present
and was thanked for the support the city has
shown to the club over many years. Michael
L to R Mayor Michael Neoh, Club president,
Kathleen Brockett, Premier Dennis Napthine
April-May 2014
then spoke of the contribution clubs make to
a city such as Warrnambool. The show was
then officially opened by the State Premier,
the Hon. Dr Dennis Napthine who spoke
positively about the exhibition and hobby in
general. Club members were very appreciative
that both the Mayor and Premier chose to
attend the show and show their support.
One of the highlights of the show was the
display put on by club member Brian which
consisted of a large collection of agates from
Moonlight Heads along with some impressive
fossil specimens he has collected over the
decades.
Sunday was another hectic day with good
attendance. The show closed at 4 p.m. And
the massive pack up began. The stall traders
were happy with their results as was the club
with the attendance and stall sales.
The most popular showcase competition was
very close but congratulations must go to
Rosemary Keyburn who took first place with
an excellent display. Well done Rosemary!!
Thanks must go to all those members who
worked so hard to make the show a success!

The zircon crystal opposite (Picture from the Guardian
newspaper) measures about 200 by 400 microns and
was found on an Australian sheep station in the Jack
Hills about 800 km north of Perth. It has been dated at
4.4bn years old and is therefore the oldest piece of the
planet found so far and indicates that the earth’s crust
formed soon (160 million years) after the planet was
formed.
Why is zircon so useful in determining the age of rocks?

Gemkhana, had a table at St Luke’s fete and
been very busy with the collection of our
recently deceased No. 8 club member.
Our efforts in providing the catering for the
Gemkhana was very exhausting. So many
sandwiches and Devonshire teas were made.
We had a great team of willing workers
all of whom went home on Sunday totally
exhausted. Under the direction of Rae, who,
with her husband Eyvind, master minded the
shopping, cooking and menu, all worked as a
great team as they do for our Exhibition. Our
thanks also go to members of other Clubs
who were a great support, helping when we
were short of workers from our club. On Rae’s
behalf, many thanks to all.
I was very pleased that some of our members
entered competitions this year. Ken has been
stirring for some time and it was very pleasing
to see that they did very well with the results.
More excitement followed when Lucy won the
tumbler in the main raffle.
On behalf of all at WGC I would like to thank
all members of the VGCA and clubs for the
huge amount of work put in to make this event
a success.
Some members are enjoying joining George
on his field trips and we have a Club one
organized at Easter for those unable to make
the trip to Gatton.
Sadly, this month John Wren passed away.
John has been a very important member
at Waverley, holding many important
positions and was a life member. He will be
remembered by many for his contribution to
faceting and the many designs he created. He
will be greatly missed by all.
Gwen and Robyn.

Diamonds in Victoria
“Small diamonds have been found in alluvial
deposits in Victoria, from the northeast to the
far west. The main sources are gold-bearing
gravels in present-day stream valleys and
older buried stream channels, known as
deep leads, in the Beechworth—Eldorado
and Chiltern—Rutherglen areas. These
regions were part of the Ovens District
mining field, centred on Beechworth. Most of
the diamonds were discovered by accident
during treatment of wash-dirt for gold and tin
recovery between the 1860s and early 1900s.
Despite investigations by mining companies,
no commercial deposits have been found and

(courtesy of George Fadersen)
Well it has happened again, another very
successful show. Thanks must go to those
willing supporters. This show just does not
happen- there is a lot of hard work to be done
to get it off the ground. Organizing is a big
thing; there is the advertising, signs, checking
out the venue, contacting traders, catering,
etc. This organizing is done by the dedicated
few. A big thanks goes out to those people
that helped to make the 2014 Gemkhana a
very successful event. Friday 1.00 pm, the
doors were open, then the action began.
Tables began to be set up and shifted. Keith
had a floor plan but I don't know if it worked
or not. At least the tape measure worked over
time! Eventually it all came into place and then
those ever-faithful blue table coverings that
were originally purchased for the first Ballarat
GEMBOREE were placed on the tables.
Power and leads were allocated to various
sections for traders. At 4.00pm traders were
at the door waiting to get set up. Competition
cases were ready to set up, plus show cases,
which were really brilliant. (Four of those were
placed in by GV Gem Mineral & Craft Group).
These people participate in presenting their
achievements for judging etc., not to forget
displaying their showcases. Without these, this
would not be a Gem Show. Thanks a lot to
these people for their wonderful work and for
Zircons continued from page 12
Firstly zircon is tough and grains occur
almost everywhere there are sediments. It
rises through the crust in igneous rocks, is
eroded into the stream system, washed out
to sea, laid down in the sediment beds and
becomes part of the next cycle of sandstone
and shale totally unaffected! It can endure
metamorphism. That makes it a great indicator
mineral. If you find it in a granite in one place,
and in a sandstone somewhere else, you have
learned something about the geologic history
and geographic setting that brought the
zircons from the first to the second place.
Secondly, the thing that makes it possible
to date zircon so accurately is the impurity
the displaying of such. Now there is another
band of people that are the backbone of our
shows. Yes you guessed it- tail gaiters. These
are people that set up their trading stalls out
in the open exposed to all the elements. They
are a wiry, dedicated bunch. Always ready
for a laugh, a bit of fun and always willing to
help one another. Yes they are in the game to
help cover expenses as well as getting rid of
surplus material. Also quite a few machines,
etc. come up for sale. Grinders, tumblers,
faceting machines, etc. There are bargains
galore at these stalls. There is one thing I
would love to do, that is to wander around
among the tail gaiters for a yarn, reminisce
and check out what is available. Saturday
evening, off to the Wantirna Club for a meal
etc. There is one topic, I don't know if it was
the hazards or the enjoyment of flying but
it lasted for approximately one hour. This
speaker was an expert at eating and talking all
at once. It was sure a great evening. Sunday
another great day- yours truly volunteered
to hand out pamphlets at the local Trash 'N
Treasure- I did not know what I was in for.
Sure did some foot work but that's part of
the game. Sunday final day, turned out to be
reasonably good, anyway, all in all a great
Gemkhana. Congratulations to the organizerswell done!
uranium. The uranium-lead (U-Pb) system of
dating rocks is very accurate, and zircon is
good for this because it holds these elements
tightly.
Uranium in zircons is useful because over
time it decays to lead, thus providing a
radiometric clock to tell the age of a particular
zircon (and often the rock from which it was
extracted). Zircon is particularly useful in U-Pb
dating because zircon hates Pb. That is, when
the zircon is crystallizing uranium is readily
incorporated into the crystal structure, but lead
is not, therefore researchers can be confident
that all the lead comes from the decaying
uranium.

WHITE CLIFFS GEM FEST AND
CAR BOOT SALE From Jane Stevenson
WHITE Cliffs residents have always wanted to
get on the gem circuit so a big thanks to Brett
and Jenny Brown, who 3 years ago, held the
first White Cliffs Gem Fest. The Car Boot Sale
was included the second year and has been
a great success. Come and experience the
uniqueness of the opal fields, view a dugout, a
camp, go for a spec on the field, could be your
lucky day.
The White Cliffs Miner’s Association is proud
to continue Brett and Jenny’s great work,
hence the 2014 White Cliffs Gem Fest &
Car Boot Sale will start at 9am on Saturday
11th October to 5pm and 9am Sunday 12th
October to noon. Only $20 per day to book a
table inside and $10 per day outside. The kids
will have fun with Vicki and Emma from the
Mobile Outback Toy Library holding activities
like painting, art, play dough and there are 2
playgrounds plus a gem pit to occupy the kids
safely. It would be appreciated if parents get
involved when structured activities are being
held so those children not participating are
being looked after.
Our local CWA ladies will cater for morning
and afternoon teas with scrumptious
homemade goodies, tea and coffee all day.
Lunch is going to be a spit prepared by
Greg Graham; enjoyed on bread rolls with or
without coleslaw and a touch of gravy.
Leroy from Wilcannia will sing and play his
guitar for us behind the Hotel on Saturday
night, Chris from Yowah will make it look easy
to play the didgeridoo and we invite Brad and
Honor back again and all musically talented
people to have a jam and enjoy playing and
singing with others, just for the joy of it.
Linda George, our local Gold and Silversmith
will be demonstrating and offering an on the
spot setting service for that opal or gem you
just bought. Have Linda create a unique piece
of jewellery in silver or gold or buy an original,
direct from the artist. The White Cliffs Public
School P&C will be holding their famous
White Elephant Stall again this year and will
be doing fundraising activities throughout
the weekend. The P&C will also be cooking
scrumptious bacon and egg rolls for breakfast
Saturday and Sunday morning.
Barbara Gasch’s book “Eye of the Beholder
- A Life in Jewellery written by Cree Marshall
can be purchased for $30.00 which entitles
the buyer to meet the goldsmith artist in her
dugout. Barbara and Doug Brook will also
have for sale the whole set of the extremely
rare books by Len Cram entitled “A Journey
with Colour – A History of Queensland Opal,
A History of Lightning Ridge Opal, A History
of White Cliffs Opal and A History of South
Australian Opal.
The yearly raffle will be a Diamond 6” Grinding
Wheel valued at $120.00, a piece of rough
opal and a handmade piece of opal jewellery
by Linda George. Our local business owners,
miners, jewellery makers, wood workers and
artists will be displaying their wares. Glen
Innes Gemhunters Haven will be attending
with a wide range of gemstones, jewellery and
lapidary supplies. Mick and Coralie from Micol
Minerals in Adelaide will be displaying fossils
and gems from all over the world. Return
visitors the Strike’s from the Broken Hill Gem
Club and our friends from Yowah will have
great displays.

painted rocks, local wood craft, things for your
hair, hats, magnets, White Cliffs souvenirs,

2014 GEMKHANA COMPETITION RESULTS
1st
POPULAR CHOICE SHOWCASE (GROUP 100)
1st place is the winner of the Alex Amess Trophy for 2014
Case number 4 (79 votes) Mineral Group of Waverley Gem Club of Victoria
2nd
Case number 8 (76 votes) Goulburn Valley Gem Mineral & Craft Group
3rd
Case number 3 (64 votes) Mr Tom Trioani (Waverley Gem Club of Victoria)
The quality of showcases compensated in good measure for the disappointing level of
participation in this Group, which is always popular with visitors.
A big thank you to the Clubs/members from Waverley, Nunawading, Geelong, Goulburn Valley
and Essendon who supported this important promotional element of the Gemkhana.
I would hope to see an entry in this Group from all active Victorian Clubs for “our" GEMBOREE®
in Horsham at Easter 2015 (as well as more entries across the entire range of competition
categories of course). We all need to take ownership of these events as without wider Club
support these major events will simply become trade displays and miss the opportunity to
promote lapidary in all its forms and grow club membership.
Thanks
Bill Gordon.
What's in a Lead Pencil?
The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans
used small lead discs to rule lines on sheets
of papyrus before writing on them with a brush
and ink. By the 14th century, European artists
were using rods of lead, zinc or silver to make
pale grey drawings called silverpoint.
Lead ceased to be a writing implement in
1564, when pure graphite was discovered at
Borrowdale in the North of England and the
modern pencil was born. Graphite is a form of
carbon, which is one of the softest minerals.
When it is pressed against paper, thin layers
flake off to leave a black mark.
The `lead’ in a pencil is made by mixing
together fine graphite and clay and then firing
it in sticks in a kiln. Graphite cannot be ground
in an ordinary mill because its flaky structure
makes it a natural lubricant. So an `attrition
mill’ is used. Jets of compressed air containing
graphite particles are blasted at one another,
and as the particles collide they break up.
The fine particles are mixed with pure china
clay and water, producing a putty-like paste.
The mix is fed into a cylinder and forced
through a hole at one end, emerging as a
continuous length the diameter of pencil lead.
The lengths are cut into pencil sized sticks,
and dried in an oven before being fired at a
temperature of about 1200° C.
EDITOR’S NOTE
A reader has pointed out that some of the
pictures in POINTER show fossickers in

that require a ladder to climb down. With any
excavation there is the danger of collapse
if not done correctly. Readers of POINTER

any excavation.
Regarding excavations the Worksafe Australia

As we state on the disclaimer on page 3 readers
are warned to proceed cautiously. Especially with
respect to any technical information and advice for
which the VGCA and the Editor do not warrant the
accuracy and disclaim all liability. Some articles
may indicate the use of dangerous chemicals. The
reader should make sure that they are aware of all
safety procedures before following any advice.
What are fulgurites?
When lightning strikes a sand dune, the high
temperature fuses quartz sand grains into
glass rod-like structures called fulgurites.
These could form anyplace that has both
lightning and sand.
