“Staupe . . . has fabulous technique, there was fire and wit in the
performance but also an affectionate regard for the work’s . . . lyrical
moments.”

ABBEY CHURCH EVENTS 2015-2016
Andrew Staupe
O
ne hundred twenty years ago Saint Martin’s Abbey was founded by
the Benedictine monks of Saint John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota.
In 1980, during the sesquimillennial celebration honoring Saint Benedict
of Nursia and eighty-five years after Saint Martin’s founding, the Abbot and monks
of Saint Martin’s Abbey established Abbey Church Events.
Part of a centuries-old Benedictine tradition of nurturing the arts and learning,
Abbey Church Events is an annual concert and lecture series which has presented
more than one hundred and fifty scholarly lectures and classical music concerts
by some of the most luminous scholars and artists of our day. Some of our Abbey
Church Events artists also present master classes or public lectures at Saint Martin’s
University while at Saint Martin’s Abbey.
Although Abbey Church Events lectures and concerts are offered to the public free
of charge, a freewill donation in support of the series is suggested. The series is
underwritten by the interest on a small endowment established by the Benedictine
monks of Saint Martin’s Abbey, by freewill donations, bequests, and occasional
grants and matching gifts. During the 2015-2016 season we are especially grateful
for the continued support of Olympia Federal Savings, a gift from an anonymous
friend of Abbey Church Events, the Annaliese Soros Educational Residency Program
of Young Concert Artists, and for special services provided by Alpha Sigma Chi.
Be an Abbey Church Events “angel”!
